A beading methodology was used to explore the experiences of five urban Indigenous women in Winnipeg. Within this methodology, stories and conversations about beadwork are used as a way to gather and share knowledge in research. Participants were asked to share their experience of identity reconnections through beadwork stories. The major elements of this beading methodology and its underlying theoretical, epistemological and ontological roots are told through the story of the beaded medicine bags that were created for and gifted to each participant for the knowledge they contributed to this research. The author’s own beaded medicine bag is also used as a framework for a thematic analysis and discussion of the research findings. The themes identified through this analysis suggest beading as a multi-faceted and action-oriented approach that facilitates processes of journeying, remembering, relationships, asserting the self and healing that urban Indigenous women experience through their engagement with this practice. This thesis concludes by highlighting some of the important implications of beading as an Indigenous way of knowing, being and doing in social work practice and research to promote decolonization,     Art, Activism and the Creation of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG); Walking With Our Sisters, REDress Project by Gail Gallagher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Native Studies University of Alberta © Gail Gallagher, 2020 ABSTRACT Artistic expression can be used as a tool to promote activism, to educate and to provide healing opportunities for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). Indigenous activism has played a significant role in raising awareness of the MMIWG issue in Canada, through the uniting of various Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The role that the Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) initiative and the REDress project plays in bringing these communities together, to reduce the sexual exploitation and marginalization of Indigenous women, will be examined. These two commemorative projects bring an awareness of how Indigenous peoples interact with space in political and cultural ways, and which mainstream society erases. This thesis will demonstrate that through the process to bring people together, there has been education of the MMIWG issue, with more awareness developed with regards to other Indigenous issues within non-Indigenous communities. Furthermore, this paper will show that in communities which have united in their experience with grief and injustice, healing has begun for the Indigenous individuals, families and communities affected. Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth charts Christi Belcourt’s artistic career beginning with early works showcasing the natural world’s beauty and on to her large sweeping murals, including her collaborations with knowledge holder, storyteller, and emerging visual artist Isaac Murdoch. Spanning more than 25 years of art-making, the exhibition of about 35 works celebrates Belcourt’s many inspirational, artistic, and collective achievements. The exhibit also features Murdoch’s art whose iconic images, including Thunderbird woman, has been become an international symbol of the Indigenous resistance movement against resource extraction. Belcourt’s 2002 painting The Conversation – one of the most popular pieces in the Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s permanent collection – is made of dots that the artist created dipping the end of a paintbrush or knitting needle into the paint and pressing it onto the canvas. Like many of Belcourt’s best-known paintings, the piece evokes the traditional beadwork of First Nations and Métis women. Both Belcourt’s art and her poetry inspire reflection and conversation. People love Belcourt’s works showcasing beautiful twining stems, flower blossoms, and root systems which highlight the abiding connection of all life across Turtle Island (North America). In fact, in 2015, Belcourt’s Wisdom of the Universe (2014), was voted the visitors’ favourite artwork in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s entire collection.

    MAWA Critical Writing: Summer Newsletter, 2016 Walking with Our Sisters community conversation, Winnipeg, January 2014 Art in the Community by Becca Taylor For most of my career, I have worked to insert community collaborative art projects within the white walls of galleries and institutes, and community members into them as well. One of my challenges has been to ease the anxiety many people feel when entering art spaces—sites that have opaque protocols and their own complex language: the language of contemporary art. It can be very intimidating and uncomfortable. It is certainly unfamiliar to most people. So how DO we engage with the community? How do we get them into art spaces? How do we help them to relate to the work? These questions have many different answers. But I believe that the most successful examples of socially engaged contemporary art practices are ones in which the community is able to take ownership of the work, ones that take place in the community (not galleries), and ones that take the time to create meaningful conversations with community members. Community members need to be able to relate to art initiatives and to have their own/collective voice heard. People do not want to be talked for but engaged with; they want to be a part of the discussion. This work can extend beyond the goals, both conceptual and aesthetic, of the artist. It is no longer just the artist creating the work, but the community creating the work. The art itself becomes the act of conversation, organization, time together and commitment to the collective thought, idea, ideal or message.

This play is recommended for ages 16+ Community Engagement Partner Introduction How did this work evolve? Where did the initial inspiration come from? When we premiered Mouthpiece in 2015, a woman in her sixties came up to us after the show and said: “I don’t remember exactly when or how it happened but at a certain age I realized I had become invisible.” This image struck a chord within us, as did the response from the many women in the music industry who came to see the show. They responded in such a visceral way - Yes! I feel THAT. But it's even worse in our industry (possibly the most misogynist art form of them all). The two of us simultaneously had the idea to create a piece that revolved around a rock band. We wanted to put female musicians front and centre - plugged in. LOUD. We wanted women taking up space in their own individual ways while expressing what it’s like to be made small. We were calling it a Rock Opera at that time. As well, the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) hadn’t been initiated yet, and the stories of Indigenous women going missing were not being focussed on in the media. We felt that if we were going to speak about the erasure of women it was important to collaborate with Indigenous artists to draw attention to this very literal way that women are being wiped out, and how the rotten white colonial settler patriarchal system is managing to convince the public that this national crisis doesn’t matter.

The marches began in 1992 in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to demand that action be taken following the murder of a Coast Salish woman whose death was met with indifference from the authorities and the media. Today, people from all walks of life are demanding justice for murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls and opposing all forms of violence against women. Violence against women has been on the rise since the beginning of the pandemic, as the isolation imposed on everyone renders them all the more vulnerable. 1 The persistence of Indigenous women and peoples in asserting their right to be is an inspiration to all, especially their insistence on defining what it is they need and not permitting others to define what is acceptable.     Dance with us as you can…: Art, Artist, and Witness(ing) in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Journey by Jonathan Robert Dewar A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Indigenous and Canadian Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017, Jonathan Robert Dewar Abstract This dissertation explores, through in-depth interviews, the perspectives of artists and curators with regard to the question of the roles of art and artist – and the themes of community, responsibility, and practice – in truth, healing, and reconciliation during the early through late stages of the 2008-2015 mandate of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), as its National Events, statement taking, and other programming began to play out across the country. The author presents the findings from these interviews alongside observations drawn from the unique positioning afforded to him through his professional work in healing and reconciliation-focused education and research roles at the Aboriginal Healing Foundation (2007-2012) and the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (2012-2016) about the ways art and artists were invoked and involved in the work of the TRC, alongside it, and/or in response to it. A chapter exploring Indigenous writing and reconciliation, with reference to the work of Basil Johnston, Jeannette Armstrong, Tomson Highway, Maria Campbell, Richard Wagamese, and many others, leads into three additional case studies. The first explores the challenges of exhibiting the legacies of Residential Schools, focusing on Jeff Thomas’ seminal curatorial work on the archival photograph-based exhibition Where Are the Children? Healing the Legacy of Residential Schools and Heather Igloliorte’s curatorial work on the exhibition ‘We were so far away…’: The Inuit Experience of Residential Schools, itself a response to feedback on Where Are the Children?     Transmotion Vol 1, Nos 1&2 (2016) Honoring the Disappeared in the art of Lorena Wolffer, Rebecca Belmore, and the Walking With Our Sisters project DEBORAH ROOT It is 2002, and Lorena Wolffer lies on a bed. She slowly sits and begins to remove her shirt. She reveals her breasts to the audience, and then bends to remove her trousers. As she caresses her body the background music fades and we begin to hear the monotone voice of a police report. Wolffer pulls out latex gloves and displays them to the audience before putting them on. The reports of dead women continue, and we hear details of the victims’ clothing. One is six months pregnant, raped and strangled. Wolffer removes a pen and begins to carefully mark her body, as if to prepare it for an autopsy, making lines around her breasts, between her legs, her neck. Every now and then she stops, and sits in a meditation pose. Then the marking continues, and the lines become something else, less medical and more a circumscription of the parts of the body that are a focus of rage and desire. Finally she closes the pen and replaces her clothes, slowly transforming herself into an ordinary woman again. She shrouds herself with black blankets and wraps a sheet around her neck and head, covering herself completely. In performances like Mientras dormíamos (el caso Juarez) (2002-04), Mexico City artist Wolffer locates a mystery at the heart of violence, a black hole of negation, and a paradox. It is a place where desire and hatred are closely intricated, where society’s violence against women is cut into the flesh.

In this edition, we’d like to highlight a few activities and program developments from several victim serving organizations across the country. The variety will surely astound you! First, we highlight several different awareness raising activities that took place in Ontario. We look at two Ottawa based campaigns aimed at raising awareness about violence against women. Then, we explore a Toronto-born Twitter event where victims worldwide shared their personal stories in 140 characters or less. In addition to these activities, we look at an emerging form of therapy becoming available to victims – horse therapy – and learn about one Ontario woman’s success story. In this edition, we also explore a variety of programs providing services including the work of the Victims of Homicide of Edmonton Support Society, a new clinical therapist program at Manitoba Justice and a Trauma K9 coming to Surrey Memorial Hospital in British Columbia.
