Through the program, students complete placements with NGOs, government institutions, and tribunals where they gain practical work experience in human rights investigation, monitoring, and reporting. Students then write a research paper, supported by a peer review process, while participating in a seminar that critically engages with human rights discourses. In accordance with McGill University’s Charter of Students’ Rights, students in this course have the right to submit in English or in French any written work that is to be graded. Art, Activism and the Creation of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG); Walking With Our Sisters, REDress Project by Gail Gallagher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Native Studies University of Alberta © Gail Gallagher, 2020 ABSTRACT Artistic expression can be used as a tool to promote activism, to educate and to provide healing opportunities for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). Indigenous activism has played a significant role in raising awareness of the MMIWG issue in Canada, through the uniting of various Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The role that the Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) initiative and the REDress project plays in bringing these communities together, to reduce the sexual exploitation and marginalization of Indigenous women, will be examined. These two commemorative projects bring an awareness of how Indigenous peoples interact with space in political and cultural ways, and which mainstream society erases. This thesis will demonstrate that through the process to bring people together, there has been education of the MMIWG issue, with more awareness developed with regards to other Indigenous issues within non-Indigenous communities. Furthermore, this paper will show that in communities which have united in their experience with grief and injustice, healing has begun for the Indigenous individuals, families and communities affected. Uprising: the Power of Mother Earth, an Exhibition by Christi Belcourt at the Musée D’Art De Joliette
Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth, an exhibition by Christi Belcourt at the Musée d’art de Joliette April 29, 2019 – This summer (from June 8 to September 8, 2019), the Musée d'art de Joliette (MAJ) will present two new exhibitions, including Christi Belcourt’s Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth, curated by Nadia Kurd. Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth charts Christi Belcourt’s artistic career beginning with early works showcasing the natural world’s beauty and on to her large sweeping murals, including her collaborations with knowledge holder, storyteller, and emerging visual artist Isaac Murdoch. Spanning more than 25 years of art-making, the exhibition of about 35 works celebrates Belcourt’s many inspirational, artistic, and collective achievements. The exhibit also features Murdoch’s art whose iconic images, including Thunderbird woman, has been become an international symbol of the Indigenous resistance movement against resource extraction. Belcourt’s 2002 painting The Conversation – one of the most popular pieces in the Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s permanent collection – is made of dots that the artist created dipping the end of a paintbrush or knitting needle into the paint and pressing it onto the canvas. Like many of Belcourt’s best-known paintings, the piece evokes the traditional beadwork of First Nations and Métis women. Both Belcourt’s art and her poetry inspire reflection and conversation. People love Belcourt’s works showcasing beautiful twining stems, flower blossoms, and root systems which highlight the abiding connection of all life across Turtle Island (North America). In fact, in 2015, Belcourt’s Wisdom of the Universe (2014), was voted the visitors’ favourite artwork in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s entire collection. -

MAWA Critical Writing: Summer Newsletter, 2016 Walking with Our Sisters community conversation, Winnipeg, January 2014 Art in the Community by Becca Taylor For most of my career, I have worked to insert community collaborative art projects within the white walls of galleries and institutes, and community members into them as well. One of my challenges has been to ease the anxiety many people feel when entering art spaces—sites that have opaque protocols and their own complex language: the language of contemporary art. It can be very intimidating and uncomfortable. It is certainly unfamiliar to most people. So how DO we engage with the community? How do we get them into art spaces? How do we help them to relate to the work? These questions have many different answers. But I believe that the most successful examples of socially engaged contemporary art practices are ones in which the community is able to take ownership of the work, ones that take place in the community (not galleries), and ones that take the time to create meaningful conversations with community members. Community members need to be able to relate to art initiatives and to have their own/collective voice heard. People do not want to be talked for but engaged with; they want to be a part of the discussion. This work can extend beyond the goals, both conceptual and aesthetic, of the artist. It is no longer just the artist creating the work, but the community creating the work. The art itself becomes the act of conversation, organization, time together and commitment to the collective thought, idea, ideal or message. -

Resources & Supports National Indigenous History Month 2021 Event Resources The Honorable Murray Sinclair His Honour Murray Sinclair served the justice system in Manitoba for over 40 years. He was the first Aboriginal Judge appointed in Manitoba and Canada’s second. He served as Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry in Manitoba and as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). As head of the TRC, he participated in hundreds of hearings across Canada, culminating in the issuance of the TRC’s report in 2015. He also oversaw an active multi-million dollar fundraising program to support various TRC events and activities, and to allow survivors to travel to attend TRC events. The Honorable Murray Sinclair was appointed to the Senate on April 2, 2016. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the largest class-action settlement in Canadian history, began to be implemented in 2007. One of the elements of the agreement was the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) to facilitate reconciliation among former students, their families, their communities and all Canadians. The official mandate of the TRC is found in Schedule "N" of the Settlement Agreement which includes the principles that guided the commission in its important work. Read the TRC’s 94 calls to action. Digging Roots The beating hearts of Digging Roots, founding duo ShoShona Kish and Raven Kanatakta, have built a home for a talented community of players and collaborators including their son, drummer Skye Polson and Hill Kourkoutis. This play is recommended for ages 16+ Community Engagement Partner Introduction How did this work evolve? Where did the initial inspiration come from? When we premiered Mouthpiece in 2015, a woman in her sixties came up to us after the show and said: “I don’t remember exactly when or how it happened but at a certain age I realized I had become invisible.” This image struck a chord within us, as did the response from the many women in the music industry who came to see the show. They responded in such a visceral way - Yes! I feel THAT. But it's even worse in our industry (possibly the most misogynist art form of them all). The two of us simultaneously had the idea to create a piece that revolved around a rock band. We wanted to put female musicians front and centre - plugged in. LOUD. We wanted women taking up space in their own individual ways while expressing what it’s like to be made small. We were calling it a Rock Opera at that time. As well, the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) hadn’t been initiated yet, and the stories of Indigenous women going missing were not being focussed on in the media. We felt that if we were going to speak about the erasure of women it was important to collaborate with Indigenous artists to draw attention to this very literal way that women are being wiped out, and how the rotten white colonial settler patriarchal system is managing to convince the public that this national crisis doesn’t matter. -

February 12, 2021 - No. 5 Participate in the February 14 Women's Memorial Marches! CALENDAR OF EVENTS • Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls! End the Violence! • Hold the Canadian Government to Account for Violence Against Indigenous Women and Girls Women's memorial events will be held on Valentine's Day in cities across the country to demand justice for Indigenous women and girls who have been murdered or have gone missing, and to get the government to take measures to end the violence. The marches began in 1992 in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to demand that action be taken following the murder of a Coast Salish woman whose death was met with indifference from the authorities and the media. Today, people from all walks of life are demanding justice for murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls and opposing all forms of violence against women. Violence against women has been on the rise since the beginning of the pandemic, as the isolation imposed on everyone renders them all the more vulnerable. 1 The persistence of Indigenous women and peoples in asserting their right to be is an inspiration to all, especially their insistence on defining what it is they need and not permitting others to define what is acceptable.
