Gutacher: Prof. Dr. Henning Reetz 2. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 01.11.2018 ABSTRACT Jevgenij Zintchenko Jurlina: The production of lexical tone in Croatian (Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Henning Reetz and Prof. Dr. Sven Grawunder) This dissertation is an investigation of pitch accent, or lexical tone, in standard Croatian. The first chapter presents an in-depth overview of the history of the Croatian language, its relationship to Serbo-Croatian, its dialect groups and pronunciation variants, and general phonology. The second chapter explains the difference between various types of prosodic prominence and describes systems of pitch accent in various languages from different parts of the world: Yucatec Maya, Lithuanian and Limburgian. Following is a detailed account of the history of tone in Serbo-Croatian and Croatian, the specifics of its tonal system, intonational phonology and finally, a review of the most prominent phonetic investigations of tone in that language. The focal point of this dissertation is a production experiment, in which ten native speakers of Croatian from the region of Slavonia were recorded. The material recorded included a diverse selection of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words, containing all four accents of standard Croatian: short falling, long falling, short rising and long rising. Each target word was spoken in initial, medial and final positions of natural Croatian sentences.

Dalibor JOVANOVSKI UDK: 327(497.11:495): 352.07/.5(497.7)”18” Original research paper FRIENDLY COMPETITION – GREEK-SERBIAN RELATIONS AND OTTOMAN MACEDONIA IN THE EIGHTIES OF THE 19TH CENTURY Abstract The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the contacts between two Balkan states - Serbia and Greece and their proper attempt to reach an agreement on the di- vision of the Ottoman Macedonia into spheres of interest. The talks of the two coun- tries, that had an alliance agreement as of 1867, were taking place on several levels. Officially between diplomats and politicians and unofficially between diplomats and intellectuals. Although in Greece it was considered that some kind of an agreement could be reached with Serbia over Macedonia, given the weaker position of the Ser- bian side, the initial findings of the research show that it was very difficult. Both sides had claims to the same region. Athens initially thought that Serbian claims did not relate to those parts of Macedonia to which Greece had claims, but quickly found that the interests of Serbs entered much more to the south than Greek expectations. On the other hand, Belgrade was aware that Serbia's interests would not be realised if they did not have some agreement with Greece. Both sides were friendly toward one another, but their interests were different and competitive. Keywords: GREECE, SERBIA, MACEDONIA, NEGOTIATIONS, SPHERES OF INTEREST When in the first half of 1882 Trikoupis came to power, he had to face the fact that his country in the Balkans was alone, without allies (Ναλτσα, 120).

Kosovo/Kosova As Seen, As Told KOSOVO / KOSOVA As Seen, As Told Contents An analysis of the human rights findings of the OSCE Kosovo Verification Mission October 1998 to June 1999 The OSCE Kosovo Verification Mission (OSCE-KVM) was created in October 1998 as part of the international response to events in Kosovo. Recognizing that the Kosovo crisis was in large part a human rights crisis, the mission had a mandate to monitor, investigate and document allegations of human rights violations committed by all parties to the conflict. By the time the OSCE-KVM stood down on 9 June 1999, its Human Rights Division had amassed hundreds of in-country reports, and had taken statements from nearly 2,800 refugees. This report presents a comprehensive analysis of the human rights findings of the OSCE- KVM. It gives an overview of the nature of the human rights and humanitarian laws violations in Kosovo. It looks at the specific impact of those violations on different groups in Kosovo society. It also gives a geographical human rights "map", describing events in hundreds of towns and villages throughout Kosovo. The analysis reveals a pattern of human rights and humanitarian law violations on a staggering scale, often committed with extreme and appalling violence. The organized and systematic nature of the violations is compellingly described. Surveying the entire period of the OSCE-KVM's deployment, it is evident that human rights violations unfolded in Kosovo according to a well-rehearsed strategy. • The Western Question in Greece and Turkey
THE WESTERN QUESTION IN GREECE AND TURKEY A STUDY IN THE CONTACT OF CIVILISATIONS BY ARNOLD J. TOYNBEE ‘For we are also His offspring’ CONSTABLE AND COMPANY LTD LONDON · BOMBAY · SYDNEY 1922 TO THE PRESIDENT AND FACULTY OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE FOR GIRLS AT CONSTANTINOPLE THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS WIFE IN GRATITUDE FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY AND IN ADMIRATION OF THEIR NEUTRAL-MINDEDNESS IN CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH NEUTRALITY IS ‘HARD AND RARE’ PREFACE THIS book is an attempt to place certain recent events in the Near and Middle East in their historical setting, and to illustrate from them several new features of more enduring importance than the events themselves. It is not a discussion of what the peace-settlement in the East ought to be, for the possibility of imposing a cut-and-dried scheme, if it ever really existed, was destroyed by the landing of the Greek troops at Smyrna in May 1919. At any rate, from that moment the situation resolved itself into a conflict of forces beyond control; the Treaty of Sèvres was still-born; and subsequent conferences and agreements, however imposing, have had and are likely to have no more than a partial and temporary effect. On the other hand, there have been real changes in the attitude of the Western public towards their Governments’ Eastern policies, which have produced corresponding changes in those policies themselves; and the Greeks and Turks have appeared in unfamiliar roles. The Greeks have shown the same unfitness as the Turks for governing a mixed population. The Turks, in their turn, have become exponents of the political nationalism of the West.

  • Ancient History Preceding Poland Pt 2
Ancient History Preceding Poland Pt. 2 by Robert S. Sherins, M.D. 200 CE – Goths: By 200 CE, the Goths, then a Baltic tribe, rose to power and dominated the region of the Black Sea to the Dniester, Bug, Dnieper, and Don Rivers. They originated in the region between the Oder and Vistula Rivers in the middle of the 3rd Century, which was the location that was later occupied by Poland. An old and unproven Goth legend claimed that they were a Baltic tribe, who came from Gothiscandza, southern Scandinavia. The origin of the Goth name may have been taken from the root-word, Gut. Language specialists, philologists, have suggested that the word, Gut-iuda, was the name of the Gothic people, which may have been taken from the earlier Greek word, Gutthones. Gut is identical to the Baltic word, Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish word, Gutnish meant Gotland in the same manner that lamb can be used to mean sheep and the Swedish word, Gotar, and the Anglo-Saxon word, Geatas, may have been the name that became the proto-German word, Gauta. Philologists believed that the warriors from Gotland invaded the region of northern Poland to take control of the amber resources. Perhaps that was the origin of the Goth peoples. The Goths made a major expansion to the Black Sea about 200 CE and defeated the Sarmatians. The Gothic army crossed the Danube in 238 to demand tribute from the occupying Romans and then withdrew. A second invasion occurred in 250, when the Goths led the army as far as Phillippopolis, Bulgaria (originally Plovdiv, but was renamed Phillippopolis after conquest by Phillip II of Macedonia in 432 BCE).
