Your Host At UNI Hosting you for Panther basketball and all UNI athletic events is James W. Shaffer, in his second year as sports information director. Shaffer is a native of East Lansing, Mich., where he attended Michigan State University, graduating with a B.A. Degree in Advertising in 1974. He worked as a student assistant in the Sports Information Office at Michigan State before coming to UNI. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Shaffer and his wife, Alice, have no children and reside in Cedar Falls. Shaffer 5 1975-76 Panther Cage Outlook Northern Iowa basketball has experienced a recession period long enough and the outlook potential for 1975-76 says more prosperous times lie ahead. Not since the 1969-70 (13-12) campaign have the Panthers boasted a winning cage effort. Five consecutive seasons on a downward trend could realize a significant recovery and possibly toss UNI in among heavyweights of the North Central Conference. Coach Jim Berry begins his third season minding Panther roundball, excited about the talent and potential he 's waited for after dismal back-to-back records. A definite case of " impa tientitis" infected Berry, soon after improve ment toward the end of a 6-20 season in 1974-75. "We acquired some talented transfers last season and after sitting out a year, we can 't help but become a better basketball team in 1975-76," says Berry. "There's a lot of things which have to come together, but our over all team balance and depth are the best I've had since coming to UNI. " The Panthers only lost two regular lettermen from a year ago. Guard Joe Ferguson was second in scoring, while Jim Davis saw starting duty at forward. The Panthers return eight varsity players and six lettermen, along with four transfers and three top freshmen thrown into one big melting pot. Now its up to Berry to mix the ingredients into a winner and serious contender for league honors. Captain Bill Runchey (West Bend Sr.) is a top candidate for All-NCC forward honors after starting the past two seasons. The 6-6, 208-pound veteran led both Panther scoring and rebounding a year ago, averaging 12.4 and 7.2 marks respectively. The addition of bigger people should help take the brunt of fighting towering oppo nents off Runchey and is another reason for Panther optimism this season. Lester Lewis (Mobile, Ala. Jr.), a 6-6, 190-pound jumpingjack comes from Chippola Junior College (Fla.) and could become one of the most exciting players in the North Central Conference with his great leaping ability. Nie Classick (Broomfield, Colo. Sr.) saw starting duty last season and finished sixth in UNI scoring with a 6.8 average. Phil Rilett (Mt. Vernon So.) needs more experience, but saw some action a year ago and provides excellent backup support. At 6-10, Lex Fagen (Earlham So.) is the tallest man on the Panther roster and expected to fill in both at forward and center. Fagen started his freshman year at Ellsworth Junior College (la.). Ron Lemons (Des Moines Fr.) rounds out the forward depth and was a 2nd Team All-State cager for Des Moines Lincoln's 1975 state champs. Despite his 6-6 physique, Randy Podhaski (Waterloo Jr.) handled much of the pivot duty a year ago. He averaged 6.1 rebounds a contest to finish second behind Runchey and was fourth best scorer with a 10.3 pace. His top competition will come second semester when Mark Enright (Cedar Rapids So.) becomes eligible. The 6-9, 230-pound Nebraska transfer offers Berry a key big man after starting his freshman year for the Big 8 school. Jim Riggert (Eldora Jr.) lettered his freshman year, but saw little action in 1974-75 because of early season injuries. His 6-8 frame lends fine depth in the center slot, along with Fagen's versatility. 6 The back court has no less than six hopefuls vying for starting roles this season, led by Mark Welsh (Iowa City Sr.), a starter in 1974-75. After transferring from Iowa, Mark turned in a fine season by finishing third in scoring with a 10.8 average and 5.4 rebound mark to rank third. Letterman Greg Goodman (Grundy Center Jr.) is another top starting hopeful, along with Oklahoma State transfer Terry Carroll (Ames So.). Carroll played as a freshman in the Big 8 and is another reason Berry smiles when thinking about this season. Steve Miles (Waterloo So.) experienced limited playing time as a freshman, but also will battle for guard position.

Mark Long (Des Moines Fr.) was a teammate of Lemons' at Lincoln High and earned 1st Team All-State recognition. He and Mike Kemp (Freeport, 111.) are a couple of young ball-handling prospects expected to push upperclassmen for regular duty. So, with just three seniors and experienced underclassmen on the Panther roster, the talent seems better than in past seasons. But Berry is the first to admit several things must jell in order for UNI to become a serious contender for league hopes. " It's hard to know how our transfers will play after sitting out a year, but everyone has worked hard for this season," notes Berry. " We have good experience back at every posi tion and experience in our depth. The newcomers should really help and the freshmen look strong, plus the addition of Enright in the second semester makes us excited about getting underway." UNI finished 4-10 in league action a year ago in seventh place and hope to improve this mark in a brand new home. The 16,400-seat UNI-Dome is expected to become completed by early 1976 offering one of the finest athletic facilities in the nation. The North Central Conference appears the best balanced in recent years, according to Berry. " The NCC has to be the most balanced in a long time and most teams return a lot of people," he says. " Right now I'd say North Dakota (1974-75 Champs) and North Dakota State are top favorites, plus South Dakota State and Augustana look tough again." " Morningside loses Schlesser, the league's MVP the past two seasons and this has to hurt them," continues Berry. " South Dakota returns most everyone and Mankato State should become a much-improved outfit." " People must consider us a threat this season," claims Berry. "We'll have more maturity, better talent, size and more ex perienced depth at all positions. Our chief con cerns are getting everyone to play together and how well the transfers adjust to the layoff." UNI faces a tough 23-game regular schedule, in addition to the NCC Holiday Tourney Dec. 28-30 at Sioux Falls, S.D. Non-conference foes include Western Michigan, Illinois State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, all Division I schools. The Panthers operate with a basic single post and two guard front offensively and stick to man-to-man on defense. Use of the press becomes a more effective tool this season with added depth, according to Berry. UNI teams haven't been what you'd call a hot item on the basketball market the past few seasons, but look for an improved commodity in 1975-76.

30-31 TERRY CARROLL - Guard 6-3, 187, 20 Sophomore - Ames One of brightest additions to Panther cage program. Sat out 1974-75 campaign after transferring from Oklahoma State, where he saw action at varsity level his freshman year. An excellent playmaker, Terry gives the Panthers additional stableness in back court. Expected to become a top candidate for starting guard assignment, his experience and confidence are definite pluses for UNl's optimistic feelings this season. A First Team All-State selection, he was a member of Ames High's 1973 Iowa State championship cage squad. During his varsity career as a prep, Ames tallied an outstanding 63-8 mark. Major - Physical Education.

40-41 NICHOLAS CLASSICK - Forward 6-6, 236, 21 Senior - Broomfield, Colo. Filled big responsibility last season in forward role. Started 23 times in 25 contests as a junior. A three-year letterman with lots of experience and counted on for leadership role in 1975-76. Finished last season 6th in scoring, tallying 169 points for a 6.8 average. Tied for 4th in rebounds with 93 and added 16 assists. All-state, all-conference, MVP and team captain at Ames High. An intelligent player, Nie also excels in the classroom. His father, Dr. L. G. Classick was a gridder at Iowa State and UNI. Berry labels as type of person every team needs in order to win. Makes up for lack of quickness with great hustle and desire. Major - Marketing.

34-35 RONALD LEMONS - Forward 6-7, 208, 20 Freshman - Des Moines Got off to tough start this season with stressed foot fracture, but is making fine progress and just starting to realize potential. One of two all-state selections off Des Moines Lincoln's 1975 state cham pionship squad, Lemons joins teammate Mark Long on the Panther squad after being sought by several schools. A smart, quick player, Ron is an excellent all-around player and just needs collegiate experience to develop more maturity. Averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds as a senior as the Lincoln squad tallied a perfect 27-0 string. He received Prep All-American recognition and his aggressive style should add great depth at forward. Major - Undecided.

10-11 LESTER LEWIS - Forward 6-6, 190, 21 Junior - Mobile, Ala. Has all the talent and physical tools to develop into one of the most exciting players in the North Central Conference this season. An outstanding jumper, Lester is a complete player. Excellent quick ness, timing and shot. A definite professional prospect, Lester played his first two collegiate seasons at Chippola Junior College (Fla.) which finished runnerup in the 1974 National Junior College Tourna ment. Lester was selected to the first team all-tourney squad. Needs work on defensive play, but Berry feels the 6-6 forward has tremendous potential for the Panthers. High School Player-of-the Year in Mobile in 1972, Lester's Murphy High squad tallied a fine 45-10 record. Major - Physical education.

22-23 MARK LONG - Guard 5-11, 158, 19 Freshman - Des Moines The other member of the Des Moines Lincoln championship team, Mark averaged 18 points a contest and should develop into a fine floor leader. Mark received first team all-state honors and earned all league and All-American recognition. A fine shooter, his excellent quickness and floor knowledge should rate him a top contender for starting duty. Berry says he has the ability to coach at this young age. Needs more experience, but should find a bright future on the Panther cage squad. Earned all league honors in football in 1974 as a runningback. Father, Sam, played basketball and baseball at Iowa State. Major - Undecided. 9 Enright Fagen Goodman Miles Kemp

50-51 MARK ENRIGHT - Center 6-9, 230, 20 Sophomore - Cedar Rapids Could fit in as big man UNI has been looking for. Played freshman year at Nebraska and becomes eligible second semester. Started six games and appeared in 17 for the Cornhuskers, Mark is a proven player with excellent shot for big man. His size and strength should add great boost to Pan thers. Needs some work defensively, but has all the tools for greatness. Scored 53 points and snatched 47 rebounds for Nebraska. An outstanding prep at Cedar Rapids' Kennedy High, Mark earned all-state his junior and senior years, plus was recognized All-American his senior year. Prep teams recorded 58-17 mark. Younger brother, Craig is a freshman cager at Dartmouth. Hurry up first \ semester! Major - History.

52-53 LEX FAGEN - Forward/Center 6-10, 206, 19 Sophomore - Earlham Pleasant late addition to Panther cage program this fall, Lex transferred to UNI after his freshman season at Ellsworth Junior College. At 6-10, Lex is the tallest member on UNl 's squad. Started at El lsworth, averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead team. Extremely quick for his size, Lex is a fine shooter and has strong jumping ability. Should figure highly in board strength this season. Lex earned MVP, all-conference and honorable mention all-state cage honors at Earlham High and served as his senior class treasurer. Future looks very bright for this youngster. Major - Sociology.

12-13 GREGORY GOODMAN - Guard 6-1, 176, 20 Junior - Grundy Center Missed several games early in the 1974-75 season due to broken hand suffered in Western Michigan game. Battled back and saw considerable action in latter half of schedule, Greg is a two-year letterman expected to challenge for starting assignment at guard. Played in 17 contests last season and scored 85 points for a 5.0 game pace. Sank 13 of 18 free throws for a .722 percentage and snatched 17 rebounds, plus contributed 14 assists. Needs more intenseness, but has great potential and experience from past two seasons to add fine depth to back court play. Earned 14 letters as prep at Grundy Center High, receiving Second Team All-State honors his senior year. Major - Recreation.

20-21 STEVEN MILES - Guard 6-2, 178, 19 Sophomore - Waterloo Saw action in nine contests last season and started five times. Gained coaches' attention during NCC Holiday Tourney a ye_ar ago and adds fine backup support at guard. A steady, intelligent player, Steve 1s a player of few mistakes. Lacks quickness and size, but desire turned in fine freshman effort in 1974-75. A 14-letter winner at Orange City and Central Highs, he participated in football, basketball, golf and track. 14-15 MICHAEL KEMP - Guard 6-2, 173, 18 Freshman -Freeport, Ill. One of three outstanding freshman members of Panther squad, Mike just needs the prerequisite ex perience before developing into a collegiate player. Lacks great quickness, but is fine shooter. Had standout career at Freeport High as cage star and baseballer. All-area, all-state and prep All American his senior year. Served as team captain on cage squad and received team's Most Valuable Player honors. Led Big 9 Conference in scoring with 22.0 average. 42-43 RANDALL PODHASKI - Center 6-6, 200, 20 Junior - Waterloo Must handle pivot responsibilities, but faces major threat from transfer Mark Enright second semester. Berry counts on heavily as a team leader after considerable starting duty over the past two campaigns. Lacks size for position by collegiate standards, but has excellent quickness and jumping ability. Second leading rebounder on team last season with 158 and a 6.1 average. Finished fourth in scoring with 269 points and a 10.3 game pace. Best games were 23 points against Central Missouri State in UNl's 91-90 win and 25 in 85-77 Western Illinois loss. Strong rebounder, Jim is perhaps one of the top defensive board men on the team. Needs to re lax more and gain confidence, according to Berry, but is expected to battle for center's job. Two seasons left offers Panthers fine depth in rebounding. Good shot for big man, Jim still managed to finish ninth in Panther scoring last season with 38 points. Finished third in scoring his freshman year with 191 points and an 8.0 game average and second in rebounds with 142. Earned 13 letters at Eldora High, Jim was all-area, all-conference and all-state. Needs some work on techniques and defense, but has all the tools to become a fine forward for UNI. Saw action in 10 games last season and managed 14 points. He received all-conference and all-state honors at Mt. Vernon High and holds several school cage records, including most career points and rebounds. A member of the Mt. This is why Head Coach Jim Berry is more excited than ever for 1975-76, despite back-to-back losing seasons his first two efforts at UNI. Berry is the man to turn things around for Panther cage fortunes and this season the talent seems better than ever. The youthful 38-year-old Berry has all the creden tials and background to provide the Panther cage program with the leadership it requires. Born January 18, 1937 in Waverly, Iowa, Berry at tended West High where he earned all-state and All American cage honors. He participated in the High School East-West All-Star Game his senior year and was also active in football and baseball. Berry became a two-time All-American cager in 1958 and 1959 at Creighton and graduated in 1960. He began his coaching career as Creighton's assistant basketball mentor after graduation. Berry also served as head baseball coach until 1962. After two years in the army, with Berry-coached military teams posting a fine 41-11 record, he moved into the high school ranks. In five years at Waterloo Columbus, Berry directed several state-ranked squads and established a 64-36 record. Moving on to Loras College in Dubuque, Berry coached the DuHawks to a 56-41 record over three seasons which included three NAIA playoff teams before coming to Northern Iowa in 1973. Berry, who remains active in the U.S. Army Reserve as a major, and his wife Mary Gene have three boys and a daughter. David, 16, is a fine football star for Waterloo Columbus; Michael, 11 and Jeffrey, 10 are his other sons and Kelly, 15 is the couples' daughter. A pair of losing efforts are past history to Berry and 1975-76 is alive and well!

Assistant Coach Dan Breitbach Dan Breitbach becomes UNl 's first full-time cage assistant in history this winter after serving in a graduate assistant's role the past two seasons. The 25-year-old Breitbach starred for Berry at Loras three seasons and served as team captain his junior and senior years. He's also a member of Loras' 1,000-point club and graduated in 1972. A Dubuque native, Breitbach attended Wahlert High and graduated in 1968 prior to attending Loras. He taught at Hempstead High in Dubuque, where he served as assistant basketball and head tennis coach before joining Berry's staff at UNI in 1973. Besides his basketball interests, Breitbach is one of the state's best amateur tennis players and teaches the sport during summers. Born June 14, 1950, Breitbach earned his Master's Degree in physical education from UNI last spring. He resides in Cedar Falls and is a bachelor. 13 The Coaching Staff

Stan B. Sheriff-head football coach, athletic director, a personality associated with UNI athletics for nearly 18 years. Recently completing his 16th season as football's top boss, the energetic Sheriff assumed his additional responsibilities as director of athletics in 1970, succeeding Dr. James Witham. Besides manning Panther football fortunes, the personable 43-year-old Sheriff maintains a highly-successful, 10-sport in tercollegiate athletic program. Under his direction UNI has won the North Central Conference all-sports title four consecutive years, stressing a well-balanced philosophy of athletics. Born April 24, 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii, his family later moved to San Francisco, where he earned all-state football honors at George Washington High School. He went on to earn all-conference honors as a center and linebacker three straight years at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and received All-American recognition as a center in 1953. He became one of the first college division players ever to participate in the Annual East-West Shrine All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl. The Los Angeles Rams drafted him as a linebacker in 1954 and he also played with Pittsburg, San Francisco and Cleveland, before retiring in 1958. From 1955-56 Sheriff served in the U.S. Army and planted his first seeds as a coach. As a recrea tion director, he coached the 4th Infantry Division to the European football title in 1955. In 1958 he received his M.A. in Physical Education from Cal Poly and came to UNI as assistant line coach for Head Coach Bill Hammer at then Iowa State Teachers College. Sheriff served in this capacity for two years and became head coach in 1960. His first Panther team recorded an impressive 9-0 regular season, finally losing 17-6 to Hillsdale College in the Mineral Water Bowl. This marked the first time in school history the Panthers had been invited to participate in a bowl contest. After 16 seasons, his football record stands at 91 wins, 63 losses and 3 ties. This season the Pan thers were 9-3-0, finishing alone in the North Central Conference with a 6-1 mark. UNI also lost 14-12 to Western Kentucky in first round action of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Sheriff-coached teams won the North Central title outright in 1960 and shared the crown in 1961 , 1962 and 1964. In 1964, UNI captured the Pecan Bowl, 19-17 over Lamar Tech in Abilene, Tex. Nine All-Americans have played for Sheriff and 52 times his players have been named to All-North Central Conference teams. Sheriff holds positions on the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the American Football Coaches Public Relations Committee and is a regional member of both the NCAA Football and Baseball Post Season Selection Committees. If these activities don't keep him busy enough, Sheriff has become a tremendous force and en thusiast behind the UNI-Dome, a multi-purpose domed facility scheduled to become a reality, instead of a dream, early in 1976. A busy man interested in making UNI a greater university, is constantly on the move promoting Panther athletics. Stan and his wife, Jane, have three sons: Paul, Michael and Richard. 14 Administrative Officials

The University of Northern Iowa is relatively new in name but the school itself is nearly 100 years old. Created by the Iowa General As sembly, the University opened in 1876 as Iowa State Normal. In 1908, the name was changed to Iowa State Teachers College and under this name attained a national reputation as a leader in the field of teacher education. In 1961, the name was again changed to State College of Iowa and six years later, received its present name.

Teacher education remains the chief function of the University, although a wide-ranging pro gram of non-teaching courses, including pro fessional training in business and science related areas are now offered. '14 72 one

From a single building on a 40-acre campus, the University has grown to include over 42 ma jor buildings on a 721-acre site. Over 500 facul ty members and approximately 8,800 students occupy the Cedar Falls campus.

New building has become a common sight around UNI in recent years, with structures like the Union, Science Building, Physical Educa tion Center, Industrial Technology Center, and UNI-Dome, a multi-purpose coliseum sche duled for completion early in 1976, occupy ing the landscape.

UNl's prowess in teacher education has left its mark on the Physical Education Department, which turns out per capita the largest number of coaches in the state and is also a top school in this field nationally.

Maintenance of a well-rounded inter collegiate athletic program is of prime interest to the UNI staff. The success of this endeavor is indicated by the fact Panther teams have won the North Central Conference all-sports trophy the last four years.

The University retains membership in the Na tional Collegiate Athletic Association 's Division II , in addition to being one of eight schools in the rugged NCC - America's premier college division league. A full round of 11 in tercollegiate sports are sponsored by the con ference and all have individual championships. 17 UNI-Dome Nearing Completion ~

Once just a dream, the UNI-Dome coliseum is quickly molding into a reality for the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls-Waterloo community and State of Iowa. The $7 million structure is scheduled for completion at the beginning of 1976 and will begin a unique and exciting era, not only for UNI athletics, but for University, community, state and national activities as well. Once the original idea was formulated in 1972, excitement and support for the Dome spread quickly. Progress developed rapidly once ground-breaking took place in August, 1974, with 85% of projected funds needed, raised as of this fall. Among the many amazing features of the facility is the fact it is being financed entirely by student fees; private donations from alumni, citizens and friends of the University. The UNI-Dome is the first of a three-phase UNI Foundation centennial project, also to include construction of a new auditorium-union complex and special academic re sources development in stages two and three. The Foundation established a ten-year time period for completion of the total project. Although athletics will become a major part of the UNI-Dome's activities, emphasis on university events such as stage productions, concerts, commencements and other special events are to receive top priority. In addition, community-, state- and national related functions will be encouraged to utilize one of the Midwest's first completely domed stadiums. Scores of reservations, requests and inquiries are already being received, with some commitments extending as far into 1977. A bible conference, antique auto show, sporting goods show, various conventions and Iowa high school sports playoffs are just a few ac tivities scheduled for the near future. Glancing at the structure from an athletic standpoint, participants and spectators alike will experience a totally new sports adventure under one roof; to include Panther foot ball, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, track and tennis. Intramural athletics for men's and women's programs will also be taking advantage of the ultra-modern facility. People utilizing the Dome will find themselves in a climate-controlled atmosphere of air conditioning and heating geared to the time of year. The roof is made of a durable, teflon-coated, fiberglass fabric, supported entirely by a cable system and air pressure from within the facility. This feature not only allows for easier construction, but creates enough natural light and solar heat to make a sizeable savings on utility costs each year. Initial permanent seating is earmarked for around 8,200 spectators, with another cou ple of thousand temporary seats available. Once the Dome is completed, an estimated capacity of 16,500 permanent seating is planned. The floor surface itself is a bowl and people will enter the facility at a level midway 18 between the floor and top of the seating. The "grass" Monsanto astro-turf football field can be rolled up in 45 minutes, revealing an all-purpose track and fieldhouse surface. Smooth areas for basketball and other court dimensions are a part of the permanent floor, with a textured eight-lane, 22(}-yd . track expected to make UNI-Dome meets recognized nationally. Smaller court orientation finds portable bleachers brought into a condensed viewing area for events like basketball, wrestling and gymnastics. Four main entrances will allow easy access inside the Dome, entering a 32-ft. wide con course. Concessions, displays, first aid stations and rest rooms will be conveniently located along either side of the structure. Colored seats and tickets will provide easily-obtainable seating through seven access gates on the east and west sides. A total absence of columns and posts make every seat in the house a fine vantage point. The three staging areas, two at the sides and one on the end will allow audiences from 5,000 to 20,000 for concerts, stage productions, etc. Exits at the north and south ends on the floor level give added convenience. A big service entrance, large enough for a semi truck will be located at the north end. A tunnel will connect the Dome with the Physical Education Center at the north end for locker facilities. Future plans call for locker and training rooms in the Dome. Other future extensions to the total complex includes handball courts, swimming pools, administrative offices, wrestling rooms and other attractive features. The possibilities of VIP boxes along the upper portions of the structure is one example in planning stages. A spacious press box will sit atop the east stands, with facilities for 10 radio origina tions, television capabilities and seating for 100 to 125 people. A photographic dark room, photo bay, concession area and scouting booths are a few of the other features in cluded. The huge scoreboards will be able to flash messages and information to spectators throughout various contests. Perhaps one of the biggest assets of the Dome is its versatility. A convocation could easily be handled in the morning, an athletic event held that afternoon and a concert staged in the evening of a single day. There are many things which make the UNI-Dome an attractive and unique facility. Its recruiting potential is unlimited as it becomes one of the most up-to-date coliseum com plexes in the nation. But the outstanding factor to keep in mind is the individual support created by the many interested people who want to make UNI a progressive university. The opportunities and future of the structure is multi-dimensional and exciting. Big name entertainers, nationally-recognized sports events, circuses, the light goes on and on for future possibilities in the UNI-Dome. UNI is proud of its new endeavor and the community will no doubt benefit by its pre sence. The State of Iowa should consider the UNI-Dome one of its greatest landmarks. The UNI-Dome - " Something for Everyone."
