HISTORY The recorded history of Women’s Basketball at North Dakota State University dates back to a mention of a team that was formed on campus (which was then known as the North Dakota Agricultural College) in 1899. The Spectrum from December, 15 1899 states that the “ladies have organized a basket-ball (sic) team and are practicing daily.” A 1901 contest against an intercollegiate rival, the Moorhead Normal School (Minnesota State University, Moorhead), according to The Spectrum, “was a crushing defeat for the Pedagogues (NDAC), for they were outclassed in every feature of the game, especially so in skill of manipulating the ball. The game, consisting of two halves of 20 minutes each was played in quarters. The final score was 20-1.” (The Spectrum, April 15, 1901, p.104.) NDSU Intercollegiate Women’s Basketball Records Page 2 of 20 Women’s intramural and intercollegiate athletics thrived through the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, with teams competing and participating in basketball, baseball, riflery, tennis, track and field, field hockey, soccer, gymnastics, and bowling. During the Second World War and 1950s, women’s athletics waned to a great extent, although physical education classes and the Women’s Athletic Association did maintain a variety of activities such as basketball, swimming, badminton, etc. It was until the mid-1960s when women’s athletics took off and it was initially in basketball. Intercollegiate competition resumed in Women’s Basketball at NDSU in 1965 when a reorganized team played two games under head coach Collette Folstad. In years previous, women from the three local colleges, NDSU, Concordia, and Moorhead Normal (MSUM), would gather to play pick-up games once a year. The schedule expanded into the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1971 NDSU joined the North Dakota chapter of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). The AIAW hosted women’s basketball tournaments at the state and national level for Division II until 1980, when the organization merged with the NCAA. NDSU hosted the 1979 Division II Tournament, but did not participate. The Bison joined the North Central Conference of the NCAA for the 1979-1980 season, which was featured many teams from the Upper Midwest and created several local rivalries. Also in 1979, NDSU hired Purdue graduate Amy Ruley to be head coach of the Women’s Basketball program, and she would lead the team for the next three decades. Under the direction of Ruley, the NDSU Bison women hoopsters won 671 games, nine North Central Conference titles, and 5 NCAA Division II championships. Ruley was awarded the C. Vivian Stringer Coaching Award by the United States Sports Academy in 2001 and in 2004 was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. NDSU also succeeded in the grandstands during this era, as the Lady Bison were at or near the top of attendance figures for NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball during the decade of the 1990s. The NDSU Basketball program joined The Summit League of NCAA Division I for the 2007-2008 season. Following this season, Amy Ruley retired and was replaced by University of Arizona graduate Carolyn DeHoff. The NDSU Bison Women’s Basketball program has produced numerous All- Conference and All-American players, including, Pat Smykowski, Nadine Schmidt, Jody Buck, Darci Steere, and Kasey Morlock. Division II National Championships: 1990-1991 win over Southeast Missouri State University 1992-1993 win over Delta State 1993-1994 win over Cal State- San Bernardino 1993-1995 win over Portland State 1995-1996 win over Shippensburg University SCOPE AND CONTENT The NDSU Women’s Basketball Records consist of print and manuscript material dating from the 1968- 1969 season to the present. The records are arranged into five series: Media Guides, Statistics and Box Scores, Game Programs, Subject Files, and Periodical Clippings. NDSU Intercollegiate Women’s Basketball Records Page 3 of 20 The Media Guides Series, arranged chronologically, consists of media guides and press releases created for and related to the women’s basketball team. These date from 1974 to present with the guide from the 1983-1984 missing. Included are also several smaller pocket-sized schedules. Statistics and Box Scores Series contains printed and hand-written statistics and box scores that date from 1968 to present. The statistics consist of game and yearly statistic sheets for the Bison. There are also NCAA Division II and NCC statistical sheets. The box scores consist of hand-written score sheets, featuring individual performances, but also diagrammed plays and notations. These were separated and organized by year, but occasionally, such as in the case of tournaments, the box scores and statistic sheets were kept together originally and this original order was maintained. The Game Programs Series includes printed game programs from many of the home games for the NDSU Bison Women’s Basketball team from the 1972-1973 season until present, with numerous gaps. In addition to home game programs, there are programs from several road games. The programs for postseason tournaments have been placed into separate folders. The Subject Files Series consist of certificates, flyers, programs, and rosters dating from 1976 to 1995. The Correspondence folders contain letters and cards of congratulations received by NDSU and also letters of acclaim to Amy Ruley congratulating her on her election to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Several folders of print materials relating to tournaments that the Bison played in or hosted were kept together originally and this original order had been maintained. Periodical Clippings Series includes articles about the NDSU Bison Women’s Basketball team from several newspapers including the Fargo Forum, Grand Forks Herald, and USA Today. These date from 1968 to 1998 and all years are not present. Some of these articles are photocopies, while some of the older clippings are glued to paper. • Big Sky Announces Additions of North Dakota, Southern Utah
BIG SKY ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS OF NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTHERN UTAH OGDEN, UTAH (November 1, 2010) - The Big Sky Conference is privileged to announce that the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University have accepted invitations to become core members of the Division I conference. Both institutions received formal invitations from the league Friday, Oct. 29, advancing a process that began when the presidents of the nine current Big Sky Conference core universities approved expansion plans at their annual fall meeting on Oct. 20. Both institutions will officially join the Big Sky on July 1, 2012. However, representatives from both institutions will begin working immediately with the currently membership on scheduling, marketing, and other conference matters. “The presidents wanted to position the Big Sky Conference as a major player in football in the West,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. “But most importantly, we wanted the right kinds of schools. Our presidents have always been driven by adding institutions that fit with the schools we currently have. We’ve added two institutions that meet the criteria, and we’ve positioned ourselves to meet the visions of the presidents. We’re building a new kind of FCS confer- ence.” Monday’s additions bring the future Big Sky to 11 core members and 13 football playing members. The Big Sky Confer- ence is also on the verge of announcing the addition of the University of South Dakota as a 12th core member. The Big Sky will become a 14-team football league and split into two seven-team divisions. The Big Sky does not anticipate losing any of its current nine core members.
