ROAD MORTALITY OF SAW-WHET AND SCREECH- ON THE CAPE MAY PENINSULA

ABST•t^CT.--Duringa 10-yr study in southernNew Jersey, 250 road-killed raptors of six and six hawk specieswere foundduring 145 km of roadtravel between mid-October and early April. Northern Saw-whet Owls (Aegoliusacadicus) and Eastern Screech-Owls(Otus asio) accounted for 45% (N = 114) and 36% (N --- 91) of all road kills, respectively.A large percentageof the saw-whet(79%) and screech- owls (88%) found were lessthan 1 yr old. More than 87% of road-killed saw-whetowls and 71% of EasternScreech-Owls were found betweenNovember and January. Slightly lessthan one-half of all roadkills of thesetwo speciesoccurred within the southernmost15 km of the CapeMay peninsula.We concludethat southernNew Jersey,especially the southernCape May peninsula,hosts a large number of wintering and migrating saw-whet owls and residentscreech-owls, and that collisionswith automobiles kill a significantnumber of theseowls.
