The Spirit of the Moravian Church 2011 Preface One of the most frequent requests to the Moravian Archives has been for a reprint of Clarence Shawe’s delightful little booklet, The Spirit of the Moravian Church. This e-book edition reproduces that booklet in its original form. In addition, the observations of two other bishops are provided for the insight they give, spanning the centuries, on the Moravian spirit. Bishop Clarence H. Shawe wrote The Spirit of the Moravian Church for the great celebration of our church’s 500th anniversary in 1957. He prepared it in the context of the British Province, and his writing reflects the style of a more gracious age when he was growing up there in the late 19th century. Some of the details and expressions may therefore sound unfamiliar to many American ears of the 21st century. That being said, this is a very solid, enjoyable, and informative work which truly captures the spirit of our worldwide Moravian Church. In doing so it clearly expounds and explores several key characteristics which have shaped our Church for more than 500 years and continue to define it today. As such, it is well worth the reading in this or any other century. Bishop D. Wayne Burkette presented his message of “A Gifted Church, a Giving Church” to the 2008 Insynodal Conference of the Southern Province. As president at the time of the Province’s Provincial Elders Conference and formerly headmaster of Salem Academy, Bishop Burkette offers a distinctly 21st-century view of the gifts of the Moravian Church.

Do not be too overwhelmed with grief if you have not. In our day, most of the world has not heard of him. Regardless of your denominational distinction, Comenius is someone Christians should become familiar with. He wrote over 154 books in his lifetime, even after all of his original manuscripts were burned during a rebellion in Holland. He was an amazing and prolific educator, and has been stamped The Father of Modern Education. Born March 28, 15 92, orphaned early, educated at the universities of Herborn and Heidelberg, Comenius began working as a pastor and parochial school principal in 1618, the year the Thirty Years war began. After the defeat of the Protestant armies in the Battle of White Mountain one of the most disastrous events in Czech historyhe barely escaped with his life while enemy soldiers burned down his house. Later, his young wife and two small children died of the plague. For seven years he lived the life of a fugitive in his own land, hiding in deserted huts, in caves, even in hollow trees. Early in 1628 he joined one of the small groups of Protestants who fled their native Moravia to await better times in neighboring Poland. He never saw his homeland again. For 42 years of his long and sorrowful life he roamed the countries of Europe as a homeless refugee. He was always poor.

He was particularly associated with humanitarian causes such as the campaigns to abolish slavery and to end the exploitation of child chimney sweeps. <b>Early Life and Poetry</b> Montgomery was born at Irvine in Ayrshire, the son of a pastor and missionary of the Moravian Brethren. He was sent to be trained for the ministry at the Moravian School at Fulneck, near Leeds, while his parents left for the West Indies, where both died within a year of each other. At Fulneck, secular studies were banned, but James nevertheless found means of borrowing and reading a good deal of poetry and made ambitious plans to write epics of his own. Failing school, he was apprenticed to a baker in Mirfield, then to a store-keeper at Wath- upon-Dearne. After further adventures, including an unsuccessful attempt to launch himself into a literary career in London, he moved to Sheffield in 1792 as assistant to Joseph Gales, auctioneer, bookseller and printer of the Sheffield Register, who introduced Montgomery into the local Lodge of Oddfellows. In 1794, Gales left England to avoid political prosecution and Montgomery took the paper in hand, changing its name to the Sheffield Iris. These were times of political repression and he was twice imprisoned on charges of sedition. The first time was in 1795 for printing a poem celebrating the fall of the Bastille; the second in 1796 was for criticising a magistrate for forcibly dispersing a political protest in Sheffield.

Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

526 book reviews John Coffey (Ed.) Heart Religion. Evangelical Piety in England and Ireland, 1690–1850. Oxford University Press, Oxford/New York 2016, xiii + 232 pp. isbn 9780198724155. £65; us$105. This impressive collection of essays had its genesis in the seventh and final one- day conference of the DrWilliams’s Centre for Dissenting Studies, which closed in 2015. John Coffey’s Introduction on ‘Sources and Trajectories in Evangelical Piety’ sets the context for the book and adds significant value to the volume. Coffey shows how the ‘introspective turn’ of early Puritan, Pietist, and evangel- ical spirituality along with stress on the necessity of the experience of conver- sion created a rich transconfessional movement centred on heart religion. Con- tinental and Anglican Pietists and early evangelicals were all indebted to the devotional literature of Puritanism with its emphasis on religious experience. The new evangelicals emerged within an established and widespread Euro- pean culture of heart religion that had been steadily disrupting confessional boundaries. Given the centrality of heart religion to the evangelical revival, unsurprisingly a trend can be observed in recent scholarship of viewing early evangelicalism as part of the wider Pietist movement that preached conver- sion from nominal or formal religion to heart religion. If polygenesis applies to the origins of Pietism, the same is true of evangelicalism. Inevitably, the diverse tributaries of evangelicalism (Lutheran, Calvinist, and Catholic; Puri- tan, Anglican, and Pietist) contributed to its pluralism (e.g. Wesleyan, Calvin- istic Methodist, and Moravian). The shared emphasis on religion of the heart was central to early evangelicals recognizing one another as participants in a transconfessional and transatlantic revival.
