1 New early Eocene Siricomorpha (Hymenoptera: Symphyta: Pamphiliidae, Siricidae, Cephidae) from the Okanagan Highlands, western North America S. Bruce Archibald,1 Alexandr P. Rasnitsyn Abstract—We describe three new genera and four new species (three named) of siricomorph sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) from the Ypresian (early Eocene) Okanagan Highlands: Pamphiliidae, Ulteramus republicensis new genus, new species from Republic, Washington, United States of America; Siricidae, Ypresiosirex orthosemos new genus, new species from McAbee, British Columbia, Canada; and Cephidae, Cuspilongus cachecreekensis new genus, new species from McAbee and another cephid treated as Cephinae species A from Horsefly River, British Columbia, Canada. These are the only currently established occurrences of any siricomorph family in the Ypresian. We treat the undescribed new siricoid from the Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil as belonging to the Pseudosiricidae, not Siricidae, and agree with various authors that the Ypresian Megapterites mirabilis Cockerell is an ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The Miocene species Cephites oeningensis Heer and C. fragilis Heer, assigned to the Cephidae over a century and a half ago, are also ants. Many of the host plants that siricomporphs feed upon today first appeared in the Eocene, a number of these in the Okanagan Highlands in particular. The Okanagan Highlands sites where these wasps were found also had upper microthermal mean annual temperatures as are overwhelmingly preferred by most modern siricomorphs, but were uncommon -

The larva of Pamphilius daisenus Takeuchi, 1938, is a solitary leaf-roller on Aruncus dioicus (Walter) Fernald var. kamtschaticus (Maxim.) H. Hara (Rosaceae), and the larva of P. montanus montanus Shinohara, 1985, is a gregarious web-spinner on Sorbus commixta Hedl. (Rosaceae). Brief descriptions of the larvae and notes on the life history of the two species are given. Collection records of this species in Japan are all from central Honshu (Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures), although the host plant, Rosa multiflora, is widely distributed and generally common in Japan, except in the Ryukyus. Based mainly on the material newly obtained in Moriya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and results of rearing experiments, the life history of this sawfly is outlined and the immature stages and the larval leaf-rolls are briefly described and illustrated. The larva is a solitary leaf-roller on Betula ermanii, B. corylifolia and B. platyphylla var. japonica [Betulaceae]. The late-instar and mature larvae are well characterized by the dark chocolate brown head and the richly black- marked thorax and last segment of the abdomen. The egg is laid always on the side vein of upper surface of the leaf, and the larval leaf roll is made always on the upper side of the leaf. The larval leaf-roll is peculiar in that the both ends are equally open with silk threads and the larva consumes the leaf at both ends of the roll. Two junior synonyms, Anchycteis brunneicornis usori (NAKANE, 1958)=Anchycteis brunneicornis (LEWIS, 1895) and Anchycteis monticola brunneipennis (NAKANE, 1963)=Anchycteis monticola (NAKANE, 1952), are newly established. Epilichas miyatakei NAKANE, 1952 is transferred to the genus Anchycteis. Habitus, male and female antennae and genitalia, and distribution map are presented. Introduction The genus Anchycteis HORN, 1880 belongs to the subfamily Anchytarsinae CHAMPION, 1897 (LEE et al., 2005; SATÔ, 2006; also see BOUCHARD et al., 2011 for synonyms of this subfamily), and is represented by three species with two subspecies from U.S.A. and Japan (STRIBLING, 1986 b; SATÔ, 2006). From Japan two species and two subspecies are recorded (SATÔ, 2006), but they have not been revised and the definitions of two subspecies are not clear. In the present paper, we review the Japanese species of the genus Anchycteis. Material and Methods Materials. The specimens examined in this paper are preserved in the following institutes and museums: Ehime University Museum, Matsuyama (EUMJ); Systematic Entomology, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan (SEHU). The holotype of the type species of the genus (Anchycteis velutina HORN, 1880) was checked in MCZBASE (the database of the zoological collections, museum of comparative zoology, Harvard University; http://mczbase.mcz.harvard.edu/guid/MCZ:Ent:8014). -
