The Origin of Evil and The Spread of False Religion The Spread of False Religion – Lesson 6, Part 1 The Table of Nations – Part 1 Genesis 10:1-5 The Table of Nations – Part 1 In our study of The Spread of False Religion it is important to identify the lineages of the sons of Noah in order to identify where each group settled with their religious practices after leaving Babel. GEN 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. GEN 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. 7 And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. 8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, 12 And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city. 13 And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, 14 And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim. 15 And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, 16 And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, 17 And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, 18 And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. 19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations. 22 The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. 23 And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. 24 And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. 25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. 21 Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. 26 And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazar-maveth, and Jerah, 27 And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah, 28 And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba, 29 And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations. 32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood. 1 The following map shows the various nations represented by the genealogy of Genesis chapter 10. This map represents the initial scattering after Babel. From this initial scattering, we will soon see that these people later migrated to the remote parts of the world. Notice the nations of Genesis 10 in the following. [131]1 The Nations of Genesis 10 [131] [131] The colors of the names on the following map represent the indicated descendent of one of Noah’s sons. 9 Genesis 10:1-32 - The Nations of Genesis 10 [131] 10 The Three Sons of Noah Genesis chapter 10 is known as the Table of Nations. The Table of Nations is important to the study of the rest of the history of the Jewish people in the Old Testament – you will see these families, and the nations they represent, mentioned again and again. The study of the nations these people represent is also important to understanding how the spread of false religions occurred. The people represented by the three sons of Noah participated in the New Testament events, and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Before we discuss the various nations descended from these three sons of Noah, let’s first look at the three sons and their responsibilities in the New Testament. The Synoptic Gospels Gospel of Targets Matthew Shem (Jews) Mark Ham (The Servant) Luke Japheth(TheGreek) 1 Bible Maps from Biblesoft, (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright (c)1986,Thomas Nelson Publishers). 2 The Seekers After Jesus The Seekers Were The Shepherds Shem The Magi Ham The Greek Japheth The Hearers in Acts The Preachers The Hearers Peter (Acts 2:14) Shem ("Men of Judea") Philip (Acts 8:26,27) Ham ("a man of Ethiopia") Peter (Acts 10:1, 22, 34-48) Japheth ("Cornelius, a centurian") Responsibility at the Crucifixion Responsibility Who Moral Shem (Jews) ("His blood be on us" MAT 27:25) Physical Burden Ham (Simon of Cyrene bore cross MAT 27:32) Executive Japheth (Roman) (Pilate. MAT 27:24) Next, we look at the three sons in their service to mankind. Note particularly the prophecy of Noah about Shem in Genesis 9:26. GEN 9:26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. This was an indirect blessing on Shem. Shem's well being would be dependent on the spiritual health of the Semite people. They were directly bound to God. [50]2 Whenever Israel forgot God, they would be pillaged, and/or sent into captivity. [50]3 DEU 8:11 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: The Three Sons Serving Mankind – In their service to mankind, let’s look at each of the three sons in the order given in Genesis 10:1, beginning with Shem, then Ham, and finally Japheth. [82; 27]4 THREE SONS SERVING MANKIND [27; 82]5 (Meeting three basic human needs) SEMITES – (Spiritual, Capacity to worship) Religion centered in monotheism. Jews – Moslems – Zoroastrians – Etc. HAMITES (Pioneers) - (Physical, Capacity to create) Settlement, Cultivation, Technology Egyptians - Phoenicians - Sumerians - Orientals - Africans & Etc. JAPHETHITES - (Intellectual, Capacity to reason) Stressed Science and Philosophy Greeks - Romans - Other European – Anglo American – Etc. We were meant to have all three (Spiritual, Physical, and Intellectual) in harmony. We were meant to develop all three. Notice that the intellectual is placed last. The natural order of these in our lives is the Spiritual, then the Physical, and lastly the intellectual. In raising our children we must remember the order, but not to forsake any. [27; 82]6 Man's Fundamental Responsibilities Man was given three fundamental responsibilities. [27]7 1. Fill the Earth with descendents. 2 [50] Noah W. GEN 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2. Fill the Earth with the knowledge of the Lord. ISA 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. HAB 2:14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. 3. Teach men to call upon the name of the Lord. GEN 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. Genealogy of the Sons GEN 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. Shem may have been the compiler of this genealogy. He lived 502 years after the Flood, which would have encompassed the entire period of this genealogy. Further evidence that this was written by Shem is that Shem's genealogy is carried to the sixth generation, while Ham and Japheth's extend only to the third. Shem may have lost touch with Ham and Japheth after the Tower of Babel incident, so did not record additional generations for Ham and Japheth.
