New Order Ghost Gigs a Disruption 002
New Order Ghost Gigs A Disruption 002 ORIGINALLY RECORDED FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER 1985 1.15pm, Thursday 6 December 2018 The Hive, New Cavendish Street hursday 6 December marks the anniversary of SETLIST New Order playing at our New Cavendish Street site. It is in fact the 33rd anniversary, which seems appropriate given the musical relevance of 331/3 RPM. 1985 marked the midpoint of a curious and eclectic musical 1 decade. On one level the era of Phil Collins and Paul Young, of Band Aid ATMOSPHERE Tand Bryan Adams, of Stock Aitken & Waterman and Stars Stars on 45. However outside of this superficial view the period was an amazingly diverse one. The 2 beginning of the decade saw the end of the post punk and new wave period, the DREAMS NEVER END emergence of the much maligned new romantic scene and the critically acclaimed two tone movement. At the same time rap music began to enter the mainstream 3 and later came the House Sound of Chicago and stirrings from Detroit, the PROCESSION second summer of love and the high water mark of rave culture, with the end 4 of the decade seeing guitar music enter centre stage again through the rise of SUNRISE grunge. Seminal albums were released throughout that still stand the test of time. 5 For New Order 1985 was the year of Lowlife, LONESOME TONIGHT the Festival of the Tenth Summer. Formed in 1980 from the ashes of Joy Division after the 6 untimely death of Ian Curtis, New Order were WEIRDO a groundbreaking band. Signed to Factory Records, and very much the Factory band, the 7 group had by this point released three critically 586 acclaimed albums and a batch of unassailable 8 singles, including Ceremony (A Joy Division THE PERFECT KISS song, and the first New Order single neatly seguing past and future), Temptation (the 9 first dance infused glimpse of what was to FACE UP come) and the groundbreaking Blue Monday 10 (allegedly the best selling 12" single of the time, but which lost money due to the AGE OF CONSENT technical aesthetic requirements of its sleeve). -

I wear black on the outside because black is how I feel on the inside zei Morrisey en daar kan ik me tot op de dag van vandaag in vinden... -

Boo-Hooray Catalog #6: Factory Records
Boo-Hooray Catalog #6: The Factory Catalog Terms: Usual. Not onerous. Boo-Hooray is proud to present our sixth antiquarian catalog, The Factory Catalog. This catalog gathers pieces from the material history of one of the most forward-thinking record labels of the 20th Century. Renowned for inventive and genre-pushing music, innovative design, and a tongue-in-cheek take on themselves and the world, Factory Records helped shape the post-punk era as well as modern design and typography. Reflecting their deep involvement in the creation of not just records but an alternative music subculture, social scene, and aesthetic language, Factory Records gave catalog numbers to virtually anything associated with the label. Accessioning items as seemingly unimportant as stationery and Christmas gifts, along with more serious projects like their club and promotional campaigns, fostered the cheeky and self- aware personality that distinguished Factory from corporate labels and overly self-serious independents. This catalog includes the unreleased and exceptionally rare FAC 1 poster, the hand-drawn original flipbook by Robert Breer and William Wegman for the Blue Monday '88 video, and tons of original poster, flyers, and broadsides made for Factory Records. For over a decade, we have been committed to the organization, stabilization, and preservation of cultural narratives through archival placement. Today, we continue and expand our mission through the sale of individual items and smaller collections. We invite you to our space in Manhattan’s Chinatown, where we encourage visitors to browse our extensive inventory of rare books, ephemera, archives and collections by appointment or chance. Catalog prepared by Evan Neuhausen, Archivist & Rare Book Cataloger; Dominic Masi Jr., Head Music Archivist; and Daylon Orr, Executive Director. -

Cumulative Form in Pop-Rock Music
twentieth-century music 1/1, 29–64 © 2004 Cambridge University Press DOI: 10.1017/S1478572204000052 Printed in the United Kingdom (Ac)cumulative Form in Pop-Rock Music MARK SPICER Abstract This article examines a variety of compositional procedures that give rise to what the author defines as ‘accumulative’ and ‘cumulative’ forms in pop-rock music, formal processes which are directly linked to the rapid advances in recording technology that occurred mainly from the late 1960s to the 1980s. The article includes detailed transcriptions and analyses of pop-rock music across a wide range of styles and genres, from progressive rock to post-punk to techno. J. Peter Burkholder has coined the term ‘cumulative form’ to describe an unusual com- positional strategy in selected late nineteenth-century works, particularly in the music of Charles Ives.1 In typical large-scale eighteenth- and nineteenth-century tonal pieces (those in sonata form, for example), we expect the main theme to be stated intact at the outset – most often in the tonic key – and then subjected to various processes of fragmentation and development as the piece unfolds. In a cumulative form this typical order is reversed: thematic fragments are gradually introduced and developed, only to crystallize into a full-fledged presentation of the main theme in a climactic pay-off at the end of the piece. As Burkholder shows, prototypes of cumulative form can be found in symphonic works from early in the nineteenth century. Probably the most famous example is the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (1823), where fragments of the ‘Ode to Joy’ are introduced long before the theme makes its first complete appearance.
