The meaning of the Chris- tian confession that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,”1 however, has produced exceedingly diverse interpretations for theological methods and content.2 With the arrival of feminist theo- logians in the middle of the twentieth century, the very credibility of the Christian tradition was retested for its content and relevance based on their insistence that there exists an inseparable causal relationship between gender experience, theological interpretations, and praxis.3 Spe- cifically, feminist theologians argue that orthodox Christology reflects predominantly androcentric patriarchal ideology and therefore has failed to communicate Jesus’ iconoclastic, subversive teaching and life against status systems, especially within religious communities. They, therefore, claim that “the Christ symbol must be reconstructed so that all who engage it may find in it a source of human liberation.”4 1. Heb 13:8 (NIV). 2. Atkins An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Classical Studies in the Graduate School of Duke University 2019 Copyright by David William Frierson Stifler 2019 Abstract This dissertation investigates ancient language ideologies constructed by Greek and Latin writers of the second and third centuries CE, a loosely-connected movement now generally referred to the Second Sophistic. It focuses on Lucian of Samosata, a Syrian “barbarian” writer of satire and parody in Greek, and especially on his works that engage with language-oriented topics of contemporary relevance to his era. The term “language ideologies”, as it is used in studies of sociolinguistics, refers to beliefs and practices about language as they function within the social context of a particular culture or set of cultures; prescriptive grammar, for example, is a broad and rather common example. The surge in Greek (and some Latin) literary output in the Second Sophistic led many writers, with Lucian an especially noteworthy example, to express a variety of ideologies regarding the form and use of language. -

Traditionally scholars have characterized the Alexandrian exegesis as allegorical or spiritual and Antiochene as historical or literal. In recent decades, scholars have sought to do away with the distinction, tending to focus on the school members’ shared training in rhetoric and grammar. I argue that the traditional distinction ought to be maintained, but I draw attention to a critical distinction between the two schools, namely, the ways in which the exegetes of the two centres apply Scripture to their respective church settings. I demonstrate this by comparing the interpretations of five passages from the Gospel of John by two Alexandrian authors, Origen and Cyril, and two Antiochenes, John Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia. iii Abstract In this thesis I argue, against much recent scholarship on early Christian exegesis, that the traditional distinction between the two exegetical schools of Alexandria and Antioch, the allegorists and the literalists respectively, ought to be maintained. -

[Feminist Mariologies are partly the reaction of a justified anger to centuries of discrimination against women enshrined in the very Scriptures, in the central theological tradition, and in the life of the Church. Mariology allows feminists to reflect on exegesis, patriar chy, equality, autonomy, obedience, sexual life, social roles, and professionalism. The rejection of all subordination, even to other women, and the maleness of Christ drive feminist Mariologies so that some move the theological location of Mariology from the gendered Christology to the ungendered Pneumatology and the reign of God.] LREADY IN 1981 the German feminist Elisabeth Gossmann said she A feared "a new Marian maximalism" which had its origins among feminist theologians.1 Nine years later the Scottish feminist Daphne Hamp- son wrote of a feminist "fixation" on Mary.2 One might surmise that the interest in Mary was dictated by the number of theological lines converging in Mariology: Scripture, Christology, anthropology, discipleship, sexuality, subordination, and eschatology.3 It is possible that some feminists thought that by addressing Mariology they could address the whole of theology. Possible, but not likely. More likely anger motivated them.
