Traditionally scholars have characterized the Alexandrian exegesis as allegorical or spiritual and Antiochene as historical or literal. In recent decades, scholars have sought to do away with the distinction, tending to focus on the school members’ shared training in rhetoric and grammar. I argue that the traditional distinction ought to be maintained, but I draw attention to a critical distinction between the two schools, namely, the ways in which the exegetes of the two centres apply Scripture to their respective church settings. I demonstrate this by comparing the interpretations of five passages from the Gospel of John by two Alexandrian authors, Origen and Cyril, and two Antiochenes, John Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia. iii Abstract In this thesis I argue, against much recent scholarship on early Christian exegesis, that the traditional distinction between the two exegetical schools of Alexandria and Antioch, the allegorists and the literalists respectively, ought to be maintained. Despite much overlap in terms of the school members’ training in grammar and rhetoric (one of the major arguments put forward by those who wish to do away with the two schools), a critical distinction lies in the ways the exegetes of the two early Christian centres used Scripture for the spiritual development of their audiences. This I demonstrate through a close analysis of the exegetical treatments of five passages from the Gospel of John by four authors, two Alexandrians, Origen and Cyril, and two Antiochenes, John Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia. I attend to my authors’ use of a shared exegetical principle that Scripture is inherently “beneficial” or “useful,” and therefore it is the exegete’s duty to draw out Scripture’s benefits, whether from the literal narrative or by moving beyond the letter to the non-literal plane. Examination of this principle allows us to understand these authors’ rationale—namely, the spiritual development of their audiences—for providing either a literal or a non-literal reading, rather than simplistically designating Alexandrians as “allegorists” and Antiochenes as “literalists.” I demonstrate that other than one brief instance, the Antiochenes remain at the literal level of the text to draw out Scripture’s benefits, whereas in every case the Alexandrians draw out benefit from the literal and the non-literal levels of the text. Moreover, I argue that one of the distinctive features of Alexandrian exegesis was that one of the most important benefits provided by the biblical text was its direct application to these authors’ contemporary church settings, situations, and even to the individual Christian souls. iv Acknowledgements I am grateful to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and McMaster University for the financial support necessary for completing this thesis.     EUSEBIUS’ EXEGESIS BETWEEN ALEXANDRIA AND ANTIOCH: BEING A SCHOLAR IN CAESAREA (A TEST CASE FROM QUESTIONS TO STEPHANOS I) Claudio Zamagni* Eusebius’ Exegesis between Alexandria and Antioch Since the last comprehensive monograph on Eusebius by David Wal- lace-Hadrill, the exegesis of the bishop of Caesarea has been under- stood through his auspicious definition: Eusebius as an exegete has to be placed, like his city, between Antioch and Alexandria, halfway between the literal and the allegorical exegesis.1 Within such a frame- work, Carmel Sant has tried to settle a developing line in Eusebius’ career as an exegete. At its outset, under the influence of Pamphi- lus and Origen, Eusebius’ exegesis leans mainly toward the allegorical reading. Later, in the period between his appointment to the epis- copacy of Caesarea and the Council of Nicaea, there is a tendency to balance in Eusebius, and allegorical exegesis is perfectly offset by the ‘literal’ exegesis. It focuses on Lucian of Samosata, a Syrian “barbarian” writer of satire and parody in Greek, and especially on his works that engage with language-oriented topics of contemporary relevance to his era. The term “language ideologies”, as it is used in studies of sociolinguistics, refers to beliefs and practices about language as they function within the social context of a particular culture or set of cultures; prescriptive grammar, for example, is a broad and rather common example. The surge in Greek (and some Latin) literary output in the Second Sophistic led many writers, with Lucian an especially noteworthy example, to express a variety of ideologies regarding the form and use of language.

I examine two frameworks for understanding this growth: Roland Fletcher’s discussion of the interaction and communication limits to growth and Max Weber’s ideal types of cities’ economic functions. I argue that while political power was never the only engine of urban growth in classical antiquity, it was always the most important motor. The size of the largest Greek cities was a function of the population they controlled, mechanisms of tax and rent, and transportation technology. © Ian Morris. Most people lived in communities of just a few dozen souls; even the largest settlement, Athens (Figure 1), was probably just 3,000 to 4,000 strong. But at the millennium’s end, the Greek east Mediterranean boasted some of the largest cities in pre-industrial history. Alexandria, Antioch, and Seleucia-on-the- Tigris probably each had 250,000-500,000 inhabitants. Figure 1. While modern anatomical knowledge is attributed to the late Renaissance period, much older writings from the 3rd century BCE or Hellenistic period reveal that extensive knowledge of human anatomy were known to scientists and doctors of ancient Greece. The scientist, Herophilus of Chalcedon was the first to dissect and systematically record detailed and accurate anatomical findings of the human body. He lived and worked in Alexandria, where scientific inquiry flourished with the support of its monarchs. Herophilus’ work was remarkable because he defied Ancient Greek taboos regarding purity, death, and the human body.
