Baily and approved by New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2010 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Immigrants of a Different Religion: Jewish Argentines and the Boundaries of Argentinidad, 1919-2009 By JOHN DIZGUN Dissertation Director: Samuel L. Baily This study explores Jewish and non-Jewish Argentine reactions and responses to four pivotal events that unfolded in the twentieth century: the 1919 Semana Trágica, the Catholic education decrees of the 1940s, the 1962 Sirota Affair, and the 1976-1983 Dirty War. The methodological decision to focus on four physically and/or culturally violent acts is intentional: while the passionate and emotive reactions and responses to those events may not reflect everyday political, cultural, and social norms in twentieth-century Argentine society, they provide a compelling opportunity to test the ever-changing meaning, boundaries, and limitations of argentinidad over the past century. The four episodes help to reveal the challenges Argentines have faced in assimilating a religious minority and what those efforts suggest about how various groups have sought to define and control what it has meant to be “Argentine” over time. Scholars such as Samuel Baily, Fernando DeVoto, José Moya and others have done an excellent job highlighting how Italian and Spanish immigrants have negotiated and navigated the ii competing demands of ‘ethnic’ preservation and ‘national’ integration in Argentina. -

Meyer Learning Activities for Students of Spanish and Latin American Studies Dominique Gálvez The Early College Experience Program, The Dodd Center, El Instituto and the Department of Literatures, Cultures and Languages at the University of Connecticut 1 I Have No Right to Be Silent, The Human Rights Legacy of Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Curriculum Overview The learning activities developed for this unit of study are based on various themes presented in Duke University’s traveling exhibit I Have No Right to Be Silent, The Human Rights Legacy of Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer and incorporates the use of original documents that are available online in the Marshall T. Meyer Papers from the Duke University Libraries Digital Collection. The learning activities in this unit help students consider the roles and responsibilities that individuals have when faced with human rights violations in their communities. It also provides a context for considering the impact that one individual can have by choosing to not remain silent or indifferent when others are being oppressed. In this unit, students will review Marshall Meyer’s sermons, anecdotes and short stories about Marshall Meyer, correspondence with political prisoners, human rights documents, photographs, newspaper headlines, political cartoons, testimonies, literature and excerpts from the CONADEP report to learn about the last military dictatorship in Argentina and fully appreciate the actions that Marshall Meyer took to defend human rights. The concepts of memory, democracy, human rights, social activism, and Jewish identity are woven into this curriculum. These activities have been designed for students who have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish proficiency, although they could be modified for other levels of language proficiency. -
The Search for the Kidnapped Children of Argentina's Disappeared
Reclaiming the Past: the search for the kidnapped children of Argentina’s disappeared Ari Gandsman Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal January 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © 2008 Ari Gandsman Abstract During the military dictatorship in Argentina between 1976 and 1983, an estimated 30,000 civilians disappeared. Most of these individuals were kidnapped by the military and taken to clandestine prisons where they were tortured and killed. The children of these victims were also seized, and pregnant women were kept alive long enough to give birth. An estimated 500 infants and young children of the disappeared were given for adoption to families with close ties to the military. Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo) were formed to discover the fate of their grandchildren. This thesis examines the key role that the search for the kidnapped children of the disappeared has played in Argentina’s post-dictatorship human rights struggle. As an ethnography of human rights, I analyze how human rights struggles are waged over competing empathetic appeals. The thesis focuses on public debates and legal contents. It is divided into three interrelated sections: the first focuses on the disappeared, the second on the search for and recovery of the children of the disappeared and the third on family member organizations. In debates about the disappeared, I trace the shifting view of the disappeared within human rights discourse from innocent victims in the aftermath of the dictatorship to political activists in the present.
