Marvel Magic Quite the strange world, this one. You’re probably familiar with it -- maybe you’ve even been here before. But there’s more to it than what you’ve seen in the past. Underneath the spandex and the heroics on the surface rests an even stranger world, one of magic and mysticism, gods and demons. The myths and legends of the past are largely true, from the court of king Arthur to the gods of Mount Olympus, strange and powerful beings have walked this world and the myriad of others connected to it. Even in the modern day, when much of the magic in the world has been supplanted by science and the heroes and monsters of old have been replaced by newer breeds, the myths of the past have far from vanished. Many have blended together: Thor, the Nordic god of Thunder, and Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth’s dimension, have both served on the Avengers, earth’s mightiest heroes. Even science and magic are not completely incompatible and some brilliant few have managed to mate them into something greater than the sum of its parts. Mostly this is a world of stories, many and varied. You are of course no stranger to forging stories and whatever tale you weave in this world is sure to be an interesting one. Here’s 1000 CP to decide the beginning of your story below. Choose wisely, because you’ll be spending the next decade here. Location Where will your story start? As social learners, humans often learn from what they observe, and especially emulate characters they admire – including fictional superheroes and villains. • Creating a Superheroine: a Rhetorical Analysis of the X-Men Comic Books
CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning.

Before the limited series Crisis on Infinite Earthsthe two iconic characters were depicted as the best of friends. After the first 13 issues, most of the story arcs were independent and self-contained from the ongoing or Superman / Batman: Vengeance storylines in the other Batman and Superman comic titles. Twenty-six writers and artists who knew Sam worked on the issue, donating their fees and royalties for the issue to the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund. LoebSuperman / Batman: Vengeance wrote Superman for two years before the launch of the title, wrote the book for the first two years of its publication. Unlike later writers, Loeb's work on the book lasted for several storylines, which were interconnected. President Lex Luthor declares Superman and Batman enemies of the state, claiming that a Kryptonite asteroid headed for Earth is connected to an evil Superman / Batman: Vengeance by Superman. Superman almost kills Lex, with Batman standing aside. Superman changes his mind at the last moment. The new Superman / Batman: VengeanceHiro Okamura, assists with the asteroid's destruction. Captain Atom is seemingly killed. Luthor is defeated and appears to die in the battle, although he is shown to survive.
