FROM THE MIND OF FATHER KELLEY

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL

This Monday, September 27th, we will celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Vincent de Paul. Vincent de Paul was born April 24, 1581 in a town called Puoy in the Kingdom of France. Puoy, as is Lourdes, is in the south of France close to Spain. Saint Vincent was ordained on September 23, 1600, at the age of nineteen.

According to Saint Vincent’s letters, he was abducted by Barbary pirates in 1605 who took him to Tunis and auctioned him off as a slave. He spent two years in slavery. He was sold three times. His third master was a former priest who was himself captured and enslaved. When captured by the Barbary pirates one was given three options: 1) Death, 2) Enslavement, 3) Convert to Islam. Unlike Vincent, this Franciscan priest decided to convert to Islam in order to gain his freedom and began living in the mountains with his three wives. The man’s second wife became edified by Vincent’s holiness of life. She became convinced that his faith was the true faith and scolded her husband for giving up his own vocation and renouncing his . Her husband became remorseful and decided to escape back to France with his slave, Vincent; so they secretly boarded a boat, crossed the Mediterranean and arrived back to freedom in France in 1607.

Saint Vincent had a great love for the poor and is the of all charities. We are blessed here at Saint Monica’s in having an active Saint Vincent de Paul Society. The poor boxes that you see at Church are for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. They maintain them, empty them, and deposit the donations into the Saint Vincent de Paul account. The donations are then used to help the neediest among us.

When people ask assistance, a member of the Society visits them and interviews them to ascertain their need(s) and to ensure that assistance is given to those who truly need it.

As we celebrate the Feast day of Saint Vincent this week, let us pray for the members of the Society we have here at Saint Monica and acknowledge the great work they do right here in South Philadelphia.
