Northeast Wine Trails, Tailormade by Car 17/01/2021 1 US: Northeast Wine Trails, tailormade by car Savor the revitalized wine culture of the Northwestern states of the United States For a few years now, wine cellars located in the northeastern states of the United States, mainly New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania, are making their own right in the national winemaking scene thanks to the excellence of their wines and gastronomic experiences. It is rather the resurgence of some of the oldest regions in the wine production of the country, mainly due to the appearance of new wineries that have blown renewed air into the local wine industry. The "Northeast Wine Trails" Car Route enters precisely into the revitalized wine culture of famous regions such as New Jersey, Cape May, Chesapeake Bay, Brandywiyne Valley, Hershey and Harrisburg and the Finger Lakes. It is an opportunity to enjoy not only its excellent wines, but also spectacular landscapes of eternal vineyards, lush forests, crystalline lakes and green hills dotted with mountains. The Route offers you short and pleasant car journeys with stops in various wineries where you will live great experiences with a glass of wine. Some are historical, others picturesque, modern or curious, but all of them present the common denominator of quality. A careful selection that will allow you to discover the full range of smells and flavors that the grapes of these lands can offer. In addition, on the way you will cross Princeton University, Kennett Square and its mushrooms, Hershey and its chocolates, Ithaca and its liberal atmosphere and, of course, New York, the exciting "city that never sleeps." Northeast Wine Trails, Departures: from January 2021 till December 2021 Destinations: New York City, Cape May, Lewes, Kennett Square, Strasburg Pa, Lancaster Pa, Manheim, Hershey Pa, Harrisburg Pa, Corning Ny and Ithaca Ny. Overnight stay in New York. Day 2: New York (NY) You have all day ahead to give a good bite to the "Big Apple"... a snack accompanied, of course, with a good glass of wine. The city of New York is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan is the most touristy, and then there's Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Settlers bought Manhattan from native Indians for the equivalent of $24. Since then, the city has been expanding, becoming a worldwide commercial reference and a global financial center. New York is one of the world's most fascinating cities. Immigration turned it into a true melting pot with hundreds of nationalities speaking more than eight hundred languages. For tourists, New York City is as magnificent as its attractions are endless, but there are a few icons that are worth visiting. The Empire State Building and its viewpoint that you can access to see a panoramic view of the entire city. Central Park is the lung of the city and the perfect haven for disconnecting from the hustle and bustle. Times Square is a retail and entertainment hotspot famous for its iconic neon billboards. Fifth Avenue is one of the world's most famous and expensive streets thanks to its opulence and highend boutiques. Wall Street and its skyscrapers in the business district are well worth seeing. A walk along the Brooklyn Bridge and the High Line, and a visit to the Statue of Liberty are something you cannot miss. In the afternoon we recommend that you approach another of the most symbolic neighborhoods of New York, the famous Soho, to start 17/01/2021 1 US: Northeast Wine Trails, tailormade by car immersing yourself in the wine world of the Northwest Coast. There is the spectacular City Winery, an unforgettable experience that combines live music, gastronomy and, of course, the wine made on the outskirts of the city. Broths contained in 300 barrels of the famous French oak connected by 11 key ducts that keep the wine at an optimal temperature. A complete and modern system that you can see during the tour of the winery, and that keeps the wine always ready for consumption. The Barrel Room houses the wine tasting room and an intimate restaurant for 40 people where wine is served from a tap in the purest beer style. Book a tour of the winery (every day from 4:00 p.m.) and a dinner to enjoy local cuisine and wine, you will not regret. Overnight stay in New York. Day 3: New York (NY) Cape May (NJ) It is convenient to start the day early to head to the wine region of the state of New Jersey until you reach Cape May, located about 4 hours behind the wheel south of New York. Do not worry because on the way you will have multiple opportunities to make cultural and oenological scales and thus rest from the car. The first stop is Princeton, a town in New Jersey famous throughout the world for Princeton University, which has been teaching since 1756. Try not to eat much breakfast because at this point we recommend you go to the city center to taste A delicious snack in the popular "Jammin 'Crepes". This creperie is nourished by fresh fruits and vegetables that come from local farms from which an attractive daily menu is made. Art lovers cannot miss the impressive Princeton University Art Museum, which houses more than 92,000 works by artists such as Goya, Monet, Gauguin and Warhol, as well as an extensive and recognized collection of Asian art. Continue south to enter the wine region of New Jersey, which in the last 30 years has improved its production thanks to new wineries that have positioned the region as the seventh largest producer of wine in the United States. With the growing demand, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc have been very planted in the area, while Chardonnay predominates in whites. Amalthea Cellars Farm Winery is your destination, a bucolic and beautiful place that seems torn from the same French countryside. The tour of the winery includes a pleasant ride in a horsedrawn centenary carriage and a romantic candlelight tasting in its cozy wine cellar full of fragrant barrels. A little further south is the next stop, one of those wineries of new wedge that have boosted the fame of the region. This is White Horse Winery, open only since 2016 but with a great future ahead. Taste their wines in their tasting room and take the opportunity to eat at one of their craft tables. Go back to the road and walk your way to the city and Margate, on the Atlantic coast, where Lucy the Elephant, an amazing sixstory high elephantshaped building. Built in 1881 based on wood and tinplate, this example of the socalled "novelty architecture" constitutes an exceptional panoramic viewpoint and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Not to be missed! Continue on your way south along the eastern coast of New Jersey, and on the outskirts of Cape May you will encounter another of the oenological and landscape attractions of the day, the Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery. This beautiful vineyard located between the bay of Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean is an authentic garden, the ideal setting to taste the last wine tasting of this intense day surrounded by tranquility. Just one step away is the picturesque city of Cape May, which prides itself on being "The Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort". The entire town is listed as the National Historic District, especially thanks to the more than 600 elegant and wellpreserved Victorian houses that adorn the streets. Another interesting visit is the Cape May Lighthouse, built in 1859. If you dare to face its 199 steps you will get an unforgettable reward: stunning views of the ocean and the bay. In front of Cape May Harbor, the colorful fishing port, you can taste the local seafood cuisine at "The Lobster House", a restaurant located in Fisherman's Wharf. There is lobster for dinner! Overnight stay in Cape May. Day 4: Cape May (NJ) Delaware Bay (ferry) Lewes (DE) Kennett Square (PE) We leave the state of New Jersey behind to depart by boat to the fabulous beaches of Delaware. The ferry that connects the port of Cape May with that of Lewes cam anchors every hour and a half approximately from 7 in the morning, on a shore that lasts about 85 minutes. While on board, take advantage of historic lighthouses and picturesque harbors, spectacular ocean vessels, native and migratory seabirds, and whale and dolphin escorts that usually accompany the ferry. Once you've landed in Lewes, we recommend a late breakfast in the nearby and beautiful town of Rehoboth Beach. Come to one of the restaurants on the seafront, for example "The Royal Treat", the favorite option of tourists and locals. When you're ready, go back to the road and head towards Nassau Valley Vineyards, Just 20 minutes behind the wheel on DE1 N.

  • The Judgment of Princeton
UVA-QA-0813 Dec. 4, 2013 THE JUDGMENT OF PRINCETON In what has been called the most important wine event of the 20th century, wines from California’s Napa Valley were evaluated alongside some of France’s best in blind taste tests conducted in Paris on May 24, 1976. In what is now known as the Judgment of Paris, a wine from Napa Valley was judged the best (of 10 tasted) in both the red and white competitions. To put it mildly, the result stunned the wine world. For most people at the time, it was simply unthinkable that wines from California could be as good as those from France. For example, upon hearing the results, one of the Paris judges demanded to have her scorecard back for fear that it would become known that she had rated some of the California wines higher than the higher-priced and better-respected French wines.1 The event was dramatized in the 2008 film Bottle Shock. The sole journalist attending the Paris event was George Taber of Time magazine. Thirty- six years later, Taber, with the help of two wine economists from Princeton University and various New Jersey wine associations, would stage a similar event. But this time, the best French wines would be compared with the best wines from New Jersey. That’s right—New Jersey. People have been making wines [in New Jersey] since colonial days, although after American Prohibition most of them were underwhelming sweet ones made with local blueberries and peaches. A small cadre of vintners, though, had been striving in recent years to produce better wines using the world’s leading viniferas.2 If all went well, Taber and the group knew this event would be called “the Judgment of” some place, and with that in mind, they selected Princeton as the setting instead of other possible New Jersey locations such as Newark, Jersey City, the Jersey Shore, Hoboken, and Ho-Ho-Kus.
