Sending their children to college shouldn’t be one of them. Your support of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation honors these sacrifices by ensuring that every child of a Marine or Navy Corpsman has the chance to pursue a post-high school education. For more than 52 years, the Scholarship Foundation has Honored Marines by Educating Their Children. During this time, you have helped us change thousands of lives, awarding more than 30,000 scholarships, valued at over $80,000,000. These scholarships have sent students to colleges, universities, and vocational/technical institutions. They’ve resulted in generations of engineers, doctors, teachers, and researchers— all whom have been raised with the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment. In the 2013-2014 academic year, we awarded more students (2,045) with scholarships, raised more funds ($17M), and enlisted more volunteers (800 and counting) than ever before. We’re proud to share the details in this year’s annual report. A gift to the Scholarship Foundation is more than a donation—it’s an investment in the future of America. We know you’ll enjoy seeing the return on your investment firsthand as you learn about our scholarship recipients. Our mission to Honor Marines by Educating Their Children is only made possible with your generous support and continued partnership. Thank you for joining us to honor the sacrifices of our Nation’s Marine families. Sincerely, Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele Margaret B. Davis USMC (Ret.) President and CEO Chairman 2 2013 annual report A Message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps As our Nation draws to a close the longest war in its history, tens of thousands of Marines and Navy Corpsmen have returned home from deployments to readjust to a new life with their families. These Marines and Corpsmen are facing unique challenges coupled with worries of family finance, including affording higher education for their children. Since 1962, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has been an invaluable member of the Marine Corps family, helping thousands of sons and daughters of our Marines make post-high-school education a reality. Just as Marines leave no one behind, the Scholarship Foundation awards every eligible child who applies. The impact of the Scholarship Foundation’s success extends beyond these resilient children who have sacrificed so much. It strengthens our Nation and invests in the future leaders of America, children raised on the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, financial assistance is becoming increasingly essential for deserving students and their hardworking Marine parents. The Scholarship Foundation steadfastly meets this need and is prepared to continue to do so to help future generations of Marine families. The United States Marine Corps is proud to be connected with the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships for military children. The Scholarship Foundation is the Nation’s oldest and largest provider of scholarships to military children, with particular attention given to those with a parent who was killed or wounded in action or who have demonstrated financial need. We believe it is our duty to support those who sacrifice everything to protect our freedom. Marines have an ethos of taking care of each other.
