Larson exhibited good speed throughout the test and practices, and he managed to secure a sixth-place starting position during qualifying. However, several mistakes during the race, a mechanical issue and a late-race incident resulted in a 26th place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). Following two test sessions on Thursday at AMS, during which the Target team made good gains on the car, Larson posted the fastest lap in the opening practice session and continued to show good long run speed in the final practice session of the weekend. The Energizer Chevy was also strong through all three rounds of qualifying, posting top-six times in each round and ultimately earning a sixth place starting position. Race day started with cloudy skies and rain, which led to a delay of the start by over an hour. After starting the race towards the front, Larson remained in fourth position until his first pit stop, which came during the competition caution on Lap 25. Larson would lose several spots on the first stop after being boxed in by the car pitted in front of him. As the race progressed, several other mistakes on pit road would continue to cost Larson track position. However, having dropped back to as low as 20th by Lap 100, Larson kept racing hard and managed to return to a top-10 position around Lap 187. Unfortunately, not long after cracking the top-10, contact with another car on pit road resulted in some nose damage that required several stops to repair. The crew quickly went to work making repairs to the damaged front, but the time on pit road resulted in Larson losing several spots. As the race neared the finish, another setback befell the team when the gear shifter broke near its base, leaving Larson with little ability to change gears. Despite all of the challenges, Larson was still running in the top-20. Finally, with about 20 laps remaining, Larson sustained minor damage to the front end when he was collected in a six car incident off of Turn 4 that resulted in the race being red-flagged. Despite not being able to finish on the lead lap, Larson hung on to the car until the end and earned a 26th place finish. NOTES OF INTEREST: The race was delayed just over an hour for the track to be dried following some morning rain The caution flag was shown 10 times during the race. Including a competition caution, for a total of 54 laps The race was red-flagged with 20 laps to go for clean-up on the track following a six car incident off Turn 4 The lead changed 28 times among 12 drivers TCGRFS QUOTEBOARD Kyle Larson – No. 42 Energizer EcoAdvanced Chevrolet SS – "Today was a frustrating race for our team. We had a really good Energizer Chevy but just couldn't catch a break. We had some issues on pit road that didn't help out, but I know we have a strong team that's capable of competing for wins. We just have to put this one behind us and look forward to Las Vegas next weekend." NSCS teams will run the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Mar. 8. FOX, Sirius XM NASCAR Channel 90 and PRN Radio will have live coverage at 12:30 p.m.ET. McMurray Collected in Late-Race Accident, Spoils Strong Run Race No. 2, The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, on the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). Jamie McMurray, driving the McDonald’s Chevrolet SS, was working on closing-out a strong run, when he was collected in an accident on lap 256 that took him out of competition and him relegated to a 40th place finish. NSCS teams checked-in to Atlanta Motor Speedway one day early (Thursday) for an open test with the new 2015 rules package. The No. 1 McDonald’s Chevy was fast right off the truck, topping the speed charts in the first of two practice sessions. McMurray backed that up with a fast car on Friday, posting a third-place qualifying result for Sunday’s race. The onset of The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, the McDonald’s Chevy maintained track-position in the top-five until the first pit stop, when McMurray was blocked in by another competitor, causing him to loose several positons. A determined McMurray then fought to maintain track-position inside the top-15. On the restart following what would be the team’s final pit stop, McMurray was collected in an accident while making a move that would put him back in the top-10 for a run to the finish. The damage suffered from the contact knocked the McDonald’s Chevy SS out of competition and led to a 40th place result. With his finish, McMurray is currently in 32nd place in the NSCS point standings. NOTES OF INTEREST: Despite a 40th place result, McMurray ran 68.3% of the laps in the top-15, ranked 11th in the field of 43 The race was slowed by caution 10 times for 54 laps along with one red-flag CGRFS QUOTEBOARD Jamie McMurray – No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet SS: – “I saw the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) get loose. It’s pretty hard to pass and you run wide-open so long that you take what you can get, when you can get it. The restarts are the best time to make-up track position; especially if you’re on the bottom of the track. That’s a pretty big advantage here. I was just racing as hard as possible and unfortunately we just got caught up in an accident there. The McDonald’s Chevy was really good today. I was really proud of our whole team”.
