Press Release Press Release MARCH 17, 2013 Renault powers Lotus F1 Team and Kimi Raikkonen to Australian Grand Prix victory The Renault­powered Lotus F1 Team E21 of Kimi Raikkonen has taken the first win of the 2013 season following a scintillating Australian Grand Prix. The 2007 world champion started from seventh on the grid and used a clever pit stop strategy to secure victory by more than 12 seconds over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel finished in third overall in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing, putting two Renault­engined drivers onto the podium. Raikkonen graduated to fifth off the start and made an early change to the medium compound tyres on lap 9. He completed a long stint on this set of rubber and, despite two light rain showers, stayed out longer than his closest rivals. The Finn returned to the pits on lap 34, after which the strategy unfolded perfectly as Alonso, Hamilton, Massa and Vettel made one further stop, leaving Raikkonen out in front. Vettel converted his pole position into an immediate lead but likewise made an early switch to the medium tyres. He then raced hard with Sutil, Hamilton and Massa, before taking the final podium spot. Team­mate Mark Webber had a slow start and struggled with a KERS that only functioned intermittently, but had a strong finish to claim sixth overall. Romain Grosjean (Lotus F1 Team) put a fourth Renault­engined car into the points, claiming tenth. Williams F1 Team had a more difficult race: Valtteri Bottas finished his debut Grand Prix in 14th overall however Pastor Maldonado retired on lap 24 following a spin. Caterham F1 Team’s new recruits Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde gave the team a double finish, with 16th and 18th respectively. Raikkonen obviously leads the drivers’ championship while Lotus F1 Team lies second in the constructors’ race behind Ferrari with 26 points. Infiniti Red Bull Racing is third. Mr C: It’s a crazy calendar, but it makes sense for the people who have to endure it. If you are a Formula 1 team who has to pay personnel to go off overseas, back-to-back races makes a lot of sense. You can cram in a lot of action, you can cram in a lot of racing in a fortnight, and then you can get back to base and save yourself a lot of money and in these troubled economic times, that is essential, so you can’t hold in against… you cannot hold the calendar against the people who have to go out there and live it. Christine: No. And having three weeks off gives us plenty of time to ponder everything that happened in Malaysia because my goodness that was a controversial race.

Thank you so much for all the support. We had no idea how it was going to go today. I’m sorry for whatever happened to Sebastian, because obviously he was very, very quick through practice. But somehow we turned it round. The engineers did such a great job yesterday, the car felt great, for both Valtteri and I, and so it’s a real surprise to be up here with these guys, so I’m very, very grateful. Kimi come and join us. What a try that was! Happy with that? I’m sure you wanted just a little bit more. I would have thought you would have done one of the old karting moves – jumping up and down in the seat, leaning forward. Maybe you should do that next time. Kimi RÄIKKÖNEN: Yeah, it’s OK, but obviously when you get that close it’s disappointing. I made the most out of it. Yes, there are always places you can improve, but you are never going to get it 100% perfect anywhere.
