BOOTHY’S BIT Just over 12 months after my Achilles injury stopped me running altogether, I’m starting to feel like a runner again. It’s really weird – just like when I was a complete beginner – I have no idea how fast I can run, nor how far I can sustain a reasonable pace. Although I’ve been able to run pain-free since June, I’ve been ultra cautious, expecting the Achilles injury to flare up again, but so far, so good. It’s the rest of my body that’s giving me grief, especially my knees, which I think is probably due to lack of fitness and conditioning. Looking back over the last year, the assessments, treatments, rehab exercises and excellent advice I’ve had from Peter Catley, Jilly Mitson & NHS physios have undoubtedly helped, but I get the feeling that the tendon repaired itself in its own good time.

I’ve deliberately not set myself any targets, nor have I stuck to a training programme. Basically, I’ve just run as and when I’ve felt like it. I had a gentle re-introduction to races at The Grisedale Horseshoe and 3 Shires, before enjoying two low-key legs in the Ian Hodgson and FRA Relays. However, the two cross country races I’ve completed this month were far from gentle. The Red Rose course at Leigh was flat, dry and fast, while the muddy, more mixed terrain at Wilson’s for the Mid Lancs fixture underlined how much work is needed to get back into decent shape. Thanks to the close attentions of Jeff Pickup at both I found I could race much harder than I thought possible – definitely out of my comfort zone. If I survive to the new year injury-free, I’ll get back on the programme for 2015.

Taking part in races has brought home to me how much I enjoy competing. There’s something special about the pre- and post-race atmosphere and camaraderie that makes the effort worthwhile. This has been particularly true at the cross country fixtures where Team Clayton, male and female, from the youngest (under 11) to the oldest (V70+) have mixed happily, encouraging all our runners to perform to their best. It’s been great to see. I hope that we can maintain this level of participation throughout the season and get the ladies’ and men’s teams back in Division 1 of the Mid Lancs League where they belong. Much of it is a numbers game – the more members who run, at whatever level, the better our ‘A’ teams’ chances of success.

As reported in Committee News (p14 & 15) the committee has agreed a change to the scoring in the Cross Country Palladium Points Competition. From now, you can count the results of any UK cross country race, not just the local leagues and championship races. If you do take part in a race out of the area, make sure that the cross country statistician, Harry Manning (details on p2) gets the results.

Cross Country Championships The remaining 2014 club cross country championships counter is the Mid Lancs League fixture at Sefton Park, Liverpool on 29 th November. If you have taken part in either of the previous counters ( Championship XC race at Witton Park in January and Mid Lancs League fixture at Wilson’s on 25 th October), you still have a chance of being in contention for an award.

This season’s Lancashire Cross Country Championship Race is at Witton Park, Blackburn on Saturday 3 rd January 2015. Individuals are responsible for their own entries for this race. For on line entry go to www.race-results.co.uk or you can download a form from the Lancashire Athletic Association website: www.lancsaa.co.uk . Closing date is Monday 15 th December.

The Northern Cross Country Championship is at Pontefract on 24 th January 2015, while the National Cross Country Championship is at Parliament Hill, London on 21 st February 2015. Entries to these two championships can only be made via the club. Contact either Ian Greenwood or Irene Roche if you would like to run.

Virgin London Marathon 2015 In the past the club has been allocated 4 places in the Virgin London Marathon. If you have tried to enter the 2015 race via the ballot and been rejected, contact the Club Secretary, John Wilcock with details of your rejection email. If more than four members apply for the places we will hold a ballot to decide who gets in.

….and finally

As editor of The Harrier, it’s my job to put the newsletter together and get it to the printers. But without the contribution of many other members, there’d be nothing to read. So a massive thank-you goes to: Paul Healey (Covering Old Ground & Milestones), the statisticians: Richard Lawson, Harry Manning, Andy Brown (Results), Katy Thompson (Fixtures), John Roche, Anna Kelly, Harry Manning (Runner of the Month), Jason Pier (Junior Report) and many other regular contributors. Not forgetting Mick Frost & Dave Mashiter who collect the copies from the printers and distribute them. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone!

Thanks to all!

UKA British Fell and Hill Running Championship Sunday, 19th October

The 26th running of the British Fell and Hill Championships took place on the beautiful Middleton Fells in East Cumbria. Clayton had entered four teams in the event- Men’s A and B, Men’s Vet 50 ′s and a Ladies’ team. All the top names in fell running were in attendance, and it was quite evident that we would have our work cut out for us!

Conditions on the day were far from perfect. As Rob Hope said shortly after win- ning the first stage, “It was as windy as hell out there.” However, at least it stayed dry, visibility was good and the course was mainly runnable.

For the ladies, Lisa Richardson ran well in a very fast first leg. As she handed over to Alison Dugdale and me, our team was in 33rd position in the ladies’ category. Leg 2 was a toughie but we managed to finish 14th ladies’ team and 134th overall. Expert navigators Jean Brown and Wendy Dodds had an excellent run on leg 3, matching our 14th ladies’ spot but gaining ten positions in the over- all standings. Vicki Heys was last up, and she ran a strong final leg to finish 20th lady and 144th overall. In the final standings, we were placed 17th out of 45 ladies’ teams (132nd overall) which was a great result considering the high standard of runners we were competing against.

The Men’s A team finished 37th out of 187 finishers, and the B team were 108th. Sadly, due to a couple of navigational errors on legs 2 and 3, the vet 50 ′s joined the 26 other teams who either did not finish or were disqualified.

I would like to finish with a big thank you to the team captains Jean, Dave and Shack, for their time and effort in organising a grand day out.

Covering Old Ground 25 years ago (November 1989) • In the Ian Hodgson Relay we had six teams – four men's and two Ladies'. The men's 'A' finished fourth, 'B's eighth, 'Z's 24th , and 'Pendlemen' 35 th place. The Ladies 'A' finished a creditable 37 th (out of 52 in total) and the 'B' team were 48 th place. • In the Manchester University XC Relays our Ladies finished 17 th out of 29 teams whilst the men were A's 45 th , B's 37 th , C's 55 th out of 70 teams. Judith Cunliffe provided the report and “....thanks to Harry (Manning) for doing an excellent job (as organiser of our teams)”. • The Lancashire Road Relay took place in Southport. Our 8 man team achieved 16 th overall. • In the letters page Alan Heywood wrote “Can I thank everyone who contributed towards fighting Multiple Sclerosis, when I did a sponsored run up Pen-y-Ghent. A total of £416.32 was raised.” • Another letter read ( obviously in response to Ian Campbell's cut back on race results ) “Dear Ian, I think the newsletter is crap, and the results from all races all over the country that involves even one member, should be published. Yours, Dave Thick. p.s. Sorry about the crayon, but they won't let us have any sharp objects in here.” • Garry Wilkinson was the FOCUS of this newsletter. He said “....most people think I am new to the sport, but I actually started running 14 years ago at school, in fact I finished second to Shaun Livesey in the Lancashire Schools XC in 1978. I had a ten year break before starting training serious along with my father, Richard, on Tuesday nights. I joined Clayton in August 1988.....I had a fairly successful first year in Fell Running, with help and guidance from a lot of people, I would like to thank them all, and a 'Special' thanks to those who got me round the Bob Graham in June 1989.” In the results:- Cowpe Hill FR: Winner Garry Wilkinson 19.01; Ladies winner Cheryl Cook (53 rd ) 23.44. 20 years ago (November 1994) • In the letters page Don Barton congratulated the Ladies for beating the Z team in the Ian Hodgson Relay but raised two questions “....were John McGonagle's shoes sabotaged before the final leg?....and it was noted Wendy Dodds dog, Skye, uncannily followed the correct line up Red Screes and repeatedly returned to lead her mistress and running partner along this line – obviously the Dog had prior knowledge....outside assistance???? • A number of people wrote about the very sad death of Alan Heywood – Martin Wood (from London) who had met Alan in races and become a friend; Dave Scott who had learned to use a piece of carpeting when getting changed – recommended by Alan; and Martin Clark who recalled a special photo being taken on a snow covered Swirral Edge on the 'Patterdale' weekend – “Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there, I do not sleep; I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glint of snow; I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle Autumn rain; When you awaken in the morning hush; I am the uplifting rush of quiet birds encircled in flight; I am the soft stars that shine at night; Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.” In the results:- Pendleton FR: 1st V50 John Nuttall (31 st ) 38.58 Sedbergh Hills: 1st V50 Ian Beverley (33 rd ) 2.27.25 Tour of Pendle: 1st V40 Jack Holt (4 th ) 2.31.14; 1 st V50 John Nuttall (18 th ) 2.52.18 Thieveley Pike FR: 1st V50 Ross Jacques (62 nd ) 33.40 Whirlaw FR: 1st V40 Barry Mitchell (17 th ) 41.12 Saucony Tulketh 10K: 1st L Tina Lewis (30 th ) 39.47 Burnley FS 7: 1st V50 Mick Wrigley (38 th ) 42.34 Clitheroe Duathlon: 1st L Cheryl Cook (15 th ) Swim 8.54, Run 37.04.

15 years ago (November 1999) • Walt Wilkinson's daughter, Susan wrote a letter of thanks... “Just a note to say thank you for the Commemorative stone you have erected for my Dad. For myself the events of Tuesday 14 th September were very moving. Beryl, my mum sends her apologies for not attending but with what would have been their 41 st Wedding Anniversary on the 13 th September, she would have found it too upsetting. She has since been up and found it very appropriate and very Walter. Apologies from Gary and Neil...All would have enjoyed the walk and appreciated the lovely night we were privileged to have.....Once again thank you for inviting me and giving us somewhere to pay our respects to our Dad in 'his back Garden'.

5 years ago (November 2009) • Tony Peacock asked “Has anyone else seen the Pendle Flasher?” ( I'm not sure anyone has ever responded to the question). Tony reported “I parked at the Nick and went for one of my arthritic shuffles over Pendle, roughly following the route of Paul Healey's Monday morning time trial. ( Can I just say this has nothing to do with me!!) ….I crossed from the Scout Cairn towards Ogden Clough. As I dropped down...I saw a figure running towards me....even at that distance it was clearly a male and I thought, he's either sporting very close fitting, flesh-coloured outfit or he's not wearing clothes at all. It very quickly became clear he was starkers, as when he spotted me he stopped and pulled on a pair of shorts....so I turned right towards the Nick.....I looked round and there he was again, apart from his shoes, naked as the day he was born....when he saw me looking he stopped and once more put his shorts on....will we see more lady club members taking time off to go for mid-week training runs on Pendle, in the hope of seeing what I saw? Tony I have been giving your article some thought – quite a number of members have left our club to join other clubs in the last five years – what do you think?

BRITISH MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY RELAYS Derby, 25th October

Irene Roche (Ladies Captain) reported; “Had a brilliant day in Derby at the Masters Cross Country Championships with the Clayton ladies. Success and enjoyment are the words to describe Team Clayton’s trip to Derby on Saturday 25th. Whilst bronze was awarded to our LV55 team, Christine Leathley, Jean Knightley and Irene Roche, our LV45 team comprising of Anna Kelly, Barbara Savage and Julia Rushton gained 9th place against many strong teams from all over the country.

The course was of neat dry grass consisting of one or two short hilly bits with a short visit through woodland. Two laps of this then brought each runner to the finish line. It was brilliant! Compared to many of our usual XC venues it was bit like running round someone’s very large back garden!

Garry Wilkinson added: “Many thanks to Paul Shackleton for organising this. Great to see him holding onto Bronze on the 5th, and anchor leg, in the British Masters XC in Derby today. Massive team effort from the ‘boys’. 5 x 3.1 km relay legs. We won a bronze medal in the 45-54 age cat and there’s only one of us under 50. That’s an average of 5 min 45sec per mile /average age 51 on grass”

CLAYTON JUNIORS’ TRAINING Thursday Training; Spirit of Sport, 6.00-7.00. This is an indoor circuit session to improve speed and agility. Cost £2 Saturday Training; 08.45 at Towneley Park for endurance running and/or Parkrun. Please bring clothing that is suitable for the weather and running conditions. Age Limits for Training Sessions; There's no minimum age limit to be a junior member of Clayton Harriers (although the minimum age to compete in a Fell race is six years on race day) however we have decided to apply a minimum age to attend the coached training sessions. Juniors must be in school year 5 or above. This applies only to new recruits not to those already attending. The main reason for this change is that most juniors below this age limit struggle to maintain focus during structured coaching (especially endurance work) and gain little from the session. We appreciate that there are exceptions to this however, they are fairly rare. EMAIL ADDRESS FOR JUNIORS: [email protected]
