Copy deadline for the December issue: Monday, 10th November 2014 2 BOOTHY’S BIT Just over 12 months after my Achilles injury stopped me running altogether, I’m starting to feel like a runner again. It’s really weird – just like when I was a complete beginner – I have no idea how fast I can run, nor how far I can sustain a reasonable pace. Although I’ve been able to run pain-free since June, I’ve been ultra cautious, expecting the Achilles injury to flare up again, but so far, so good. It’s the rest of my body that’s giving me grief, especially my knees, which I think is probably due to lack of fitness and conditioning. Looking back over the last year, the assessments, treatments, rehab exercises and excellent advice I’ve had from Peter Catley, Jilly Mitson & NHS physios have undoubtedly helped, but I get the feeling that the tendon repaired itself in its own good time. I’ve deliberately not set myself any targets, nor have I stuck to a training programme. Basically, I’ve just run as and when I’ve felt like it. I had a gentle re-introduction to races at The Grisedale Horseshoe and 3 Shires, before enjoying two low-key legs in the Ian Hodgson and FRA Relays. However, the two cross country races I’ve completed this month were far from gentle. The Red Rose course at Leigh was flat, dry and fast, while the muddy, more mixed terrain at Wilson’s for the Mid Lancs fixture underlined how much work is needed to get back into decent shape. Thanks to the close attentions of Jeff Pickup at both I found I could race much harder than I thought possible – definitely out of my comfort zone. If I survive to the new year injury-free, I’ll get back on the programme for 2015. Taking part in races has brought home to me how much I enjoy competing. There’s something special about the pre- and post-race atmosphere and camaraderie that makes the effort worthwhile. This has been particularly true at the cross country fixtures where Team Clayton, male and female, from the youngest (under 11) to the oldest (V70+) have mixed happily, encouraging all our runners to perform to their best. It’s been great to see. I hope that we can maintain this level of participation throughout the season and get the ladies’ and men’s teams back in Division 1 of the Mid Lancs League where they belong. Much of it is a numbers game – the more members who run, at whatever level, the better our ‘A’ teams’ chances of success. As reported in Committee News (p14 & 15) the committee has agreed a change to the scoring in the Cross Country Palladium Points Competition. From now, you can count the results of any UK cross country race, not just the local leagues and championship races. If you do take part in a race out of the area, make sure that the cross country statistician, Harry Manning (details on p2) gets the results. 3 Cross Country Championships The remaining 2014 club cross country championships counter is the Mid Lancs League fixture at Sefton Park, Liverpool on 29 th November. If you have taken part in either of the previous counters (Lancashire Championship XC race at Witton Park in January and Mid Lancs League fixture at Wilson’s on 25 th October), you still have a chance of being in contention for an award. This season’s Lancashire Cross Country Championship Race is at Witton Park, Blackburn on Saturday 3 rd January 2015. Individuals are responsible for their own entries for this race. For on line entry go to www.race-results.co.uk or you can download a form from the Lancashire Athletic Association website: www.lancsaa.co.uk . Closing date is Monday 15 th December. The Northern Cross Country Championship is at Pontefract on 24 th January 2015, while the National Cross Country Championship is at Parliament Hill, London on 21 st February 2015. Entries to these two championships can only be made via the club. Contact either Ian Greenwood or Irene Roche if you would like to run. Virgin London Marathon 2015 In the past the club has been allocated 4 places in the Virgin London Marathon. If you have tried to enter the 2015 race via the ballot and been rejected, contact the Club Secretary, John Wilcock with details of your rejection email. If more than four members apply for the places we will hold a ballot to decide who gets in. ….and finally As editor of The Harrier, it’s my job to put the newsletter together and get it to the printers. But without the contribution of many other members, there’d be nothing to read. So a massive thank-you goes to: Paul Healey (Covering Old Ground & Milestones), the statisticians: Richard Lawson, Harry Manning, Andy Brown (Results), Katy Thompson (Fixtures), John Roche, Anna Kelly, Harry Manning (Runner of the Month), Jason Pier (Junior Report) and many other regular contributors. Not forgetting Mick Frost & Dave Mashiter who collect the copies from the printers and distribute them. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone! Thanks to all! 4 CLAYTON-LE-MOORS HARRIERS OFFICIALS 2014-15 President Dave Scott: 01282 693867 Chairman James Hickie: 01254 246658 Secretary John Wilcock 01282 425699/07970 828167 Treasurer Mike Eddleston: 01254 390757 or 07951 424780 Membership Secretary Rebecca Rawcliffe: 13 Garden Street Worsthorne BB10 3NA 07772 979085 Media Manager Adrienne Olszewska : 07510 764394 Social Secretary Anne Marie Greenwood: 01254 237485 Junior Co-ordinators Marion Wilkinson : 07940 418603 Andy Armstrong: 07971 001583 Race Promotions Coordinator Mike Eddleston: 07951 424780 Elected Member Geoff Smith: 07789 357013 CAPTAINS Men’s XC Ian Greenwood 07977 937002 Ladies’ XC Irene Roche 07919 077485 Men’s Road & Trail Tom Brewster 07709 610225 Ladies’ Road & Trail Angela Shian 07972 039560 Men’s Fell Dave Motley 07810 895862 Ladies’ Fell Jean Brown 07712 003064 5 UKA British Fell and Hill Running Championship Sunday, 19th October The 26th running of the British Fell and Hill Championships took place on the beautiful Middleton Fells in East Cumbria. Clayton had entered four teams in the event- Men’s A and B, Men’s Vet 50 ′s and a Ladies’ team. All the top names in fell running were in attendance, and it was quite evident that we would have our work cut out for us! Conditions on the day were far from perfect. As Rob Hope said shortly after win- ning the first stage, “It was as windy as hell out there.” However, at least it stayed dry, visibility was good and the course was mainly runnable. For the ladies, Lisa Richardson ran well in a very fast first leg. As she handed over to Alison Dugdale and me, our team was in 33rd position in the ladies’ category. Leg 2 was a toughie but we managed to finish 14th ladies’ team and 134th overall. Expert navigators Jean Brown and Wendy Dodds had an excellent run on leg 3, matching our 14th ladies’ spot but gaining ten positions in the over- all standings. Vicki Heys was last up, and she ran a strong final leg to finish 20th lady and 144th overall. In the final standings, we were placed 17th out of 45 ladies’ teams (132nd overall) which was a great result considering the high standard of runners we were competing against. The Men’s A team finished 37th out of 187 finishers, and the B team were 108th. Sadly, due to a couple of navigational errors on legs 2 and 3, the vet 50 ′s joined the 26 other teams who either did not finish or were disqualified. I would like to finish with a big thank you to the team captains Jean, Dave and Shack, for their time and effort in organising a grand day out.
