Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Abstract - The Alpine Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus is a social corvid which uses food provided by tourist activities in mountain regions (e.g. at ski stations, refuse dumps, picnic areas). In order to determine the impact ofthe human food supply on the Alpine Chough, foraging flock size and distribution were studied in a tourist region in the Northern French Alps between 1988 and 1992. Alpine Chough attendance at tourist sites was closely related to human activities. Activity rhytbrn was influenced by human presence on picnic area in summer. Relations to human activities held at a seasonal scale (such as opening of a ski station) but not at a daily time scale (such as weekend). Long term trends of Alpine Chough populations since intense tourist development at altitude are discussed with regard of flock size counts recorded at a same site before and after intense tourist development. While conventional citizen science consists of organized campaigns to observe a particular phenomenon or species there are also many ad hoc observations of the environment in social media. These data constitute a valuable resource for `passive citizen science' - the use of social media that are unconnected to any particular citizen science program, but represent an untapped dataset of ecological value. We explore the value of passive citizen science, by evaluating species distributions using the photo sharing site Flickr. The data are evaluated relative to those submitted to the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Atlas, the largest collection of species distribution data in the UK. Our study focuses on the 1500 best represented species on NBN, and common invasive species within UK, and compares the spatial and temporal distribution with NBN data. We also introduce an innovative image verification technique that uses the Google Cloud Vision API in combination with species taxonomic data to determine the likelihood that a mention of a species on Flickr represents a given species. The spatial and temporal analyses for our case studies suggest that the Flickr dataset best reflects the NBN dataset when considering a purely spatial distribution with no time constraints. -

Heru Cahyono: [email protected] ABSTRACT Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica) is an endemic species of Java, and also one of four endemic partridge species in the Greater Sunda islands. This species is constituted by three subspecies which differ in the color pattern of their head. The first reported sighting of Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica lawuana) in Cangar is by Nijman in 2003, and for these past ten years the observation data has been inadequately obtained by local birdwatchers although its call is remarkable ; the call might be frequently heard by birdwatchers but got missed. Several information about this bird has been collected, including its sound recording that we used during observations. Observations were conducted around Cangar tourism object, particularly along the main road linking Pacet (Mojokerto) and Batu (Malang). The observations resulted in the data on its behavior and the best observation spot, that is in Lemahbang. Acknowledgements 1. Summary Laojunshan Nature Reserve is located at Yibin city, Sichuan province, south China. It belongs to eastern part of Liangshan mountains and is among the twenty-five hotspots of global biodiversity conservation. The local virgin alpine subtropical deciduous forests are abundant, which are actually rare at the same latitudes and harbor a tremendous diversity of plant and animal species. It is listed as a Global 200 ecoregion (WWF), an Important Bird Area (No. CN205), and an Endemic Bird Area (No. D14) (Stattersfield, et al . 1998). However, as a nature reserve newly built in 1999, it is only county-level and has no financial support from the central government. Especially, it is quite lack of scientific research, for example, the avifauna still remains unexplored except for some observations from bird watchers. Furthermore, the local community is extremely poor and facing modern development pressures, unmanaged human activities might seriously disturb the local ecosystem. We conducted our project from April to June 2007, funded by Conservation Leadership Programme. Two fieldwork strategies were used: “En bloc-Assessment” to produce an avifauna census and ecological assessments; "Special Survey" to assess the conservation status of some threatened endemic bird species. -

Capped Langur , Small Pratincole , WhiteWhite----wingedwinged Ducks , Gaur , Sultan Tit , Great Hornbill andand Pied Falconet ; Nameri Here a couple of ducks had now turned up , and while we were watching them , a Gaur suddenly came out of the forest for a drink and some fresh grass from the meadow surrounding the lake. We also saw several Wild Boars and a small group of Northern Red Muntjacs here , not to mention a Great Hornbill , Sultan Tits and a small party of Scarlet Minivets. No doubt this was a fantastic place , and there is no telling what could have been seen if more time had been spent here. Back in the camp we enjoyed yet another good meal , before driving a bit up river where this afternoons boat ride was to begin. We didn’t really see all that many birds while rafting on the river , but even so it was a nice experience to watch the beautiful landscape pass by in a leisurely pace – not exactly white water rafting this! Of course , there were a few avian highlights as well , including lots of Small Pratincoles , a couple of Crested Kingfisher and some nice River Lapwings , but we somehow managed to dip out on Ibisbill. We walked back to the camp as the sun was setting , but didn’t add anything new to our list , though a couple of Brown Hawk Owls put on quite a show for Erling , who was the first one to get back. We tried again with some spotlighting in the evening , and heard a calling Oriental Scops Owl not to far from the road but still impossible to see.
