Palaeonlologia Polonica, 50, 3—94, 1990. Taxonomic and ecological analysis of the ammonite assemblages, as well as their general paleogeographical setting, indicate that the Albian deposits in the Polish part of the Central European Basin accumulated under shallow or extremely shallow marine conditions, while those of the High-Tatra Swell were deposited in an open sea environment. The Boreal character of the ammonite faunas in the epicontinental area of Poland and the Tethyan character of those in the Tatra Mountains are evident in the composition of the analyzed assemblages. -

Stratigraphic Constraints on the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous Paleotectonic Interpretations of the Placetas Belt in Cuba Andrzej Pszczo´łkowski Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, Poland Ryszard Myczyn´ski Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, Poland ABSTRACT he Placetas belt in north-central Cuba consists of Late Jurassic–Cretaceous rocks that were highly deformed during the Paleocene to middle Eocene T arc-continent collision. The Late Proterozoic marble and Middle Jurassic granite are covered by the shallow-marine arkosic clastic rocks of late Middle Jurassic(?) or earliest Late Jurassic(?) ages. These arkosic rocks may be older than the transgressive arkosic deposits of the Late Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous Con- stancia Formation. The Berriasian age of the upper part of the Constancia For- mation in some outcrops at Sierra Morena and in the Jarahueca area does not confirm the Late Jurassic (pre-Tithonian) age of all deposits of this unit in the Placetas belt. The Tithonian and Berriasian ammonite assemblages are similar in the Placetas belt of north-central Cuba and the Guaniguanico successions in western Cuba. We conclude that in all paleotectonic interpretations, the Placetas, Camajuanı´, and Guaniguanico stratigraphic successions should be considered as biogeographically and paleogeographically coupled during the Tithonian and the entire Cretaceous. -

A 480 m section of marls with widely separated levels of nodular limestone in the Fahdene Formation north of Bou Khadra in Tebessa Province, northeastern Algeria, spans the Lower/Middle Cenomanian boundary. A total of 30 ammonite species are present, of which two: Forbesiceras reversum and Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) algeriense are new. The fauna allows recognition of the Northwest European upper Lower Cenomanian Mantelliceras dixoni Zone, the succeeding lower Middle Cenomanian Cunningtoniceras inerme Zone, the Acanthoceras rhotomagense Zone and its subzones of Turrilites costatus and Turrilites acutus. The sequence of index species occurs in the same order in both north-eastern Tunisia and the Southerham Grey Pit in Sussex (and indeed elsewhere in North- west Europe), indicating these to be robust assemblage zones and subzones that can be recognised on both the north and south sides of the Tethys. -

B, Nr. 65 The more important species to which a lectotype has herein been designated and figured are Acanthopleuroceras maugenesti (d'Orb.) and Coeloceras grenouillouxi (d'Orb.). The holotype oi Platypleu- roceras brevispina, a fragment of three successive whorls, is described in detail for the first time. The ranges of described ammonites are presented in Table 2. The early appearance of Zetoceras and Lytoceras, and the occurence of Crucilobiceras, Microderoceras, and Jamesonites are notable. The first evidence of the Liparoceratid family occurs in the upper part of the taylori Subzone. Resume La subdivision biostratigraphique du Pliensbachien inferieur a ete etudiee dans son stratotype a Pliensbach (arrondissement de Göppingen, Wurtemberg). Deux coupes supplementaires de la region- type, Celles de Nürtingen et de Holzmaden, ont ete prises egalement en consideration. Le Schema de subdivision en zones et sous-zones elabore par Dean et al. (1961) pour la province liasique de l'Europe du NW peut etre applique ä la serie marnocalcaire, epaisse de 9 a 12,5 m, de la region-type. La seule restriction importante est la position de la sous-zone a Masseanum, si on se refere ä la definition de la zone ä Jamesoni par Oppel (1856). Les premiers representants du genre Tropidoceras se trouvent ensemble avec des Uptonia. II faut en conclure que la sous-zone ä Masseanum est la sous-zone superieure de la zone ä Jamesoni. -

A description is given of the ammonites collected during the Italian expedition to the Zanskar region of the NW Himalayasin 1984 . The paleontological analysis is made in the context of a depositional and ecological model proposed for Spiti Shales fades. The genera Uhligites, "Vi-rgatosphinctes", Aulacosphinctesand Parapallasicerasare identified. An upper -to uppermost Lower Tithonian age is assigned for the highest levels of the Spiti Shales Fm. in the sector examined, although it may be possible that the extreme base of the Upper Tithonian is alsorepresented. Introduct ion and geological setting. This paper deals with a small ammonite fauna found near Sneatze (Western Zan skar) in the famous unit of the Spiti Shales. During the Italian geological expedition in Zanskar in the summer of 1984, one of us (A.T.) surveyed in particular the Jurassic units Qadoul et al., 1985; Gaetani et al., 1986). As regards the Mesozoic, most of the expedition took place in the Zangla Nappe (Baud et al., 1984), but a few observations were made also along the front of the Zum lung Nappe (Baud et al., 1984). Three main lithostratigraphic units are distinguishable between Ringdom Gompa and Tantak, even though they are often incompletely present as a result of the heavy tectonics of the area (Gaetani et al., 1985). The Kioto Limestone is uppermost Triassic-Late Liassic in age (Gaetani et al., 1986) and is rather poor in mac rofossils there. -

ABSTRACT - Fu1 and Fu2 faunas, represented by the spathic lumachella horizons of the Grilli Quarry (Furlo Pass, Umbria- Marche Apennines), contain two highly biodiversified assemblages. They follow chronologically the “Venturi ’78” bed from the Pallareto Quarry (Catriceras catriense bioevent), which is considered the first post-Sinemurian record to be found in the Apennines: as a whole, these three faunas characterize the lower part of the Early Pliensbachian (Carixian) in our area. The material collected at the Furlo Pass enabled us to recognize an unexpected wealth of forms, including some completely new taxa. Within the Psiloceratida (order comprising the taxa traditionally placed in the Lytoceratina and Ammonitina), the new family Holcolytoceratidae is proposed here for Audaxlytoceras together with Holcolytoceras. Among the Eoderoceratoidea, we describe the new species Omoderoceras latispira (a Paramicroderoceratinae with monospinate inner stage, formerly found in the “Venturi ’78” bed), and we note the discovery of the first Apennine ammonoid ascribable to Apoderoceras. -

Lower Tithonian microconchiate simoceratins from eastern Mexico: Taxonomy, biostratigraphy, and palaeobiogeography. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (1): 133–158. The precise record of simoceratins sampled bed−by−bed is first reported from Mexico (Mazatepec area in Puebla, cen− tral−eastern Mexico), as well as the existence of lappeted peristomes in these ammonites. Both Pseudovolanoceras aesinense and the subspecies Pseudovolanoceras aesinense chignahuapense are shown to occur among Mexican simoceratins. The European species and the Mexican subspecies share the same stratigraphic range in the studied sec− tions, yet they differ in ephebic sculpture. Ecological adaptation to neritic seas corresponding to eastern Mexico areas is interpreted, forcing phenotypic deviation with geographic significance, i.e., subspeciation. The new subspecies would in− dicate stratigraphic horizons within the Semiformiceras semiforme/Haploceras verruciferum Chronozone in the Mediter− ranean Tethys. A revision of contemporaneous simoceratins in the Americas is founded on a comparative analysis with respect to the European species P. aesinense.
