Set & Costume Designer Anna Viebrock Under Wieler and Morabito, Pique Dame becomes a psychological thriller; they condense the accuracy with which Tchaikovsky treats German Erin Caves the original story by Alexander Puschkin even more: the Russian Lisa Rebecca von Lipinski composer transfers the motifs of Puschkin’s novella, published 1834, to match the opera’s date of origin in the late 19th century. The story Count Tomsky Vladislav Sulimsky centres on the young Russian soldier German, who feels haunted by Prince Yeletsky Shigeo Ishino the ghost of a countess. Together, they “carve out every facet of Tchaikovsky’s music” (SWR2). The production stands out due to its close-knit ensemble, led by mezzo- Helene Schneiderman in the role of the Countess: Their combined efforts make this Pique Dame unique.
