Peter Tchaikovsky The Queen of Spades op. 68 (1890) after the novella of the same name by A. C. Pushkin Libretto by Modest Tchaikovsky New version for soli and orchestra op. 75 by Eberhard Kloke Starting situation The following sources were available for the new version of The Queen of Spades: scores published by Kalmus, D. Rather, Lucie Galland and the Hermann group of publishers. The reason and aim of this kind of new version consists not only in creating a feasible version for smaller ensembles and stages, but far more in establishing the basis for concentrating on the dramatic core of the work. Aim of the new version The central action was reduced to a chamber play, since the protagonists’ main action takes place independently of the so-called episodic scenes (offering elements of French Grand Opéra with chorus, ballet and colourful genre set pieces). The chamber opera thus galvanises the dramatic action with a more stringent dynamic force and shifts it closer to Pushkin’s novella. Nevertheless, the set confusion of time, styles and sequence of action is retained, since Tchaikovsky placed the work in the late eighteenth century and not, like Pushkin, in the early nineteenth. The musical adaptation The compositional structure in general, the notation of the vocal parts, and the main instrumental characteristic of the work are retained according to Tchaikovsky’s original intention. The reduction of the woodwind is based on the instrumentation settings required in the original score and is a reason for the likewise reduced string setting. The sound figures, sound colours and register changes are oriented on the main score and are – when at all possible – transferred to the smaller score. -

Email: [email protected] Alexander Pushkin ’s literary works have been an inspiration for the cinema already from the emergence of the narrative fiction film. One of Pushkin ’s most frequently adapted stories is a mystical novella Queen of Spades written in 1833. In Russian silent cinema, there were different versions of the story – the first one appeared as a short film in early 1910 and was directed by Pyotr Chardynin, another already a feature -length version was made in 1916 by Yakov Protazanov. While Protazanov’s version follows Pushkin’s story more closely, Chardynin also seems to draw heavily o n Tchaikovsky’s eponymous opera, which makes his film more reliant on the viewer ’s prior knowledge of the original text. The article focuses on both films, particularly on their means of transferring Pushkin’s original text o n screen. By comparing them to each other as well as with their original source materials (hypotext in Genette’s terminology), it also de- fines the degree of intertextuality in relation to the viewer ’s understanding of the re- sulting hypertext. There is a curious story connected with Pushkin’s novel Queen of Spades and the famous Russian actor and television film director Mikhail Kozakov. -

Burdenko, Roman - Baritone Biography Roman Burdenko is one of the most interesting young baritones. He is the winner of many prestigious singing competitions including Competizione dell’ Opera International Competition in Moscow (1st Prize, 2011), Concours de Chant Lyrique Long-Thibaud-Crespin in Paris (2nd Prize, 2011), Placido Domingo’s Operalia in Beijing (3rd Prize, 2012), and 32nd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Amsterdam (2nd Prize, 2013). Burdenko joined Mariinsky Opera Company in Sankt-Petersburg in 2017. Among his recent and upcoming engagements are Shchelkalov (Boris Godunov) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Gerrard (Andrea Chenier) in Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rodrigo (Don Carlo) in Bolshoi Theatre, Lord Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor) at Zurich Opera, Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana) and Tonio (I pagliacci) at the Dutch National Opera, also Rigoletto, Prince Igor, Falstaff, Alberich (Das Rheingold), Amorasro (Aida), Rangoni (Boris Godunov), Escamillo (Carmen), Tonio (I pagliacci), Tomsky (The Queen of Spades) and Albiani (Simon Boccanegra) at Mariinsky. Among highlights of his previous seasons are roles of Tonio (I pagliecci), Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana), Rangoni (Boris Godunov) at Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile, Marcello (La bohème) at the Komische Oper Berlin, Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Palm Beach Opera, Paolo Albiani (Simon Boccanegra) at theTeatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile and Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg. During past seasons Burdenko has performed Tonio, Prince Igor, Stankar (Stiffelio), Dunois (Orleanskaya deva), Renato (Un ballo), Enrico (Lucia), Ford (Falstaff)and debuted in Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible at the Rotterndam Gergiev Festival among many others. He sung on stages of most prestigous theatres such as Théâtre de Genève, Bolshoi Theatre, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Las Palmas Opera, Opernhaus Zurich, Glyndebourne Festval, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen, Bavarian State Opera etc. -
