Robertson Burrawang Cricket Club Inc. Established 1972 Correspondence; 19 May St, Robertson, NSW 2577

The first recorded cricket match was played in the area in the late 1800s, with both Robertson and Burrawang having separate teams. Early records indicate that between 1925-27, a young fellow named Bradman, playing for Bowral, managed scores of just 2, 12 and 35 against Robertson! The Robertson and Burrawang Clubs merged in 1972, with the First Grade side capturing the premiership in their debut season.

Participants therefore progress to Master Blasters FROM THE PRESIDENT: Program only when they master these basic cricket skills.

Season 2019/20 was one like no other for Highlands Cricket. After a good start to the summer with Skills that children will learn and improve in Junior Blasters include: matches in October and November uninterrupted, devastating Bushfires in December and early January with associated air quality issues, much needed rain in the 6-8 weeks after that, followed · Social skills by the Coronavirus pandemic rearing its ugly and dangerous head in March, meant that very little · Cricket skills cricket was played in the final two-thirds of the season. · Game sense - Fundamental movement skills Our Junior teams, superbly mustered by James & Fiona Rodger, played some good cricket when they were able to take the field and the improvement was there for all to see. Our Senior teams We had 10 kids register for this program, they all had a great time and we hope they return strung some wins together early in the year and carried on that momentum whenever they were next year and continue on to play their cricket with us in future! able to play following that. Being crowned Minor Premiers and then Premiers in all 3 Grades following cancellation of the finals series is a reward for that consistency, and if the finals had have been played it would have taken a great effort from any other team to defeat any of our 3 sides on the field. Congratulations to all involved and well done - let’s hope we can push to win these same 3 trophies next season.

Again, we led the way off the field this summer with some fantastic functions, a great (if wet) day at the SCG for the Women’s WC T20 Semi Finals where our young players were able to take the field during the pre-game ceremony, and we were also recognised by Cricket NSW in their ‘Community Partners Program’ as being a vital member of our town.

Thanks to our small committee who really stepped up this year, and our many valued sponsors who are all featured in this booklet.

Finally, we lost a legendary figure within our Club this year with the passing of Russ Watman in June 2020. I have included a tribute to Russ in this Yearbook on page 11. We will miss him.

We have achieved so much as a Club this year - it’s a pity we didn't get as much action on Satur- days as usual, but we look forward to 2020/21 and I hope to see everyone return for another enjoy- able (and hopefully incident-free) summer of cricket.

Captain’s Comments;

In what was a crazy season of cricket with many off-field obstacles, it was a great summer for 1st Grade who went through undefeated.

This season has seen some positive changes with team selection meetings pushing young 2nd Graders up into the top Grade following a couple of vacancies in our line up - the first time this has really happened in all my time as captain of this team. All these players who made their 1st Grade debuts this year performed incredibly well. This will make us an even stronger Club in future years. The reason all our Senior teams went through the year the way we did was due to the commitment from all players, which puts us in a great posi- tion to continue building in future.

Thanks to all for a great season.

James Rodger Robertson Burrawang CC - Juniors 2019/20 PROUD SPONSORS OF ROBERTSON BURRAWANG CRICKET CLUB

Robertson Burrawang fielded 3 junior teams in the 2019/2020 season. The teams consisted of two Stage 2 teams, the Bulls and our all girls team the Wom- bats, and a Stage 1 team, the Bunyips.

The Wombats saw the girls return for a second year of cricket and the Bulls also fea- tured a number of players returning for another season, who played finals cricket for the first time.

It was also encouraging to see a number of new kids join the club to form a Stage 1 team, the Bunyips. This was made up of kids that had not played previously and 3 kids in their second year in Josh Green, Alex Norton and Max Wallace guiding the new players around.

From the coaches perspective, and there were 6 coaches in Emma Green, Rod Wal- lace, James Crooks, Jim Wilson, Richard Norton and Dave Morton a big thank you to the juniors for making it a memorable summer and for the fun and excitement you showed.

Finally thank you to all the parents that helped out through the season driving kids around, scoring, umpiring and helping out at training. One of the best aspects of the season was the club organising tickets to watch the Australian Women’s team play a

World Cup game in Canberra and winning tickets to the World Cup Semi Finals in

Sydney. It’s these sort of events outside of training and Saturday matches that ce- ments friendships amongst the kids.

Captain’s Comments; An unplanned change of leadership and a few guys rising from the dead to fill the numbers made for a new dynamic within 2nd Grade this season. But it didn’t take long at all for the side to find a balance which would eventually lead to premier- ship success. Ex-1st grade experience mixed with a young enthusiastic bowling attack, made our side the best in the competition consistently all season.

A lot of the younger 2nd grade boys got an opportunity in the top grade through- out the season, all of them improving massively for the experience, particularly Riley Hurford, who will likely not be in a 2nd grade match until he decides he doesn’t like cricket anymore. Another one of these young guys who shone as a result of that opportunity was Charles Whatman, who came back to 2nd grade on fire taking his first career 5fa, ending up with 6/13 in round 6 against Bowral. All in all a great year full of outstanding team performances, something that can be said for all 3 grades this season.

On a sunny afternoon in the outfield, playing short and in danger of our 1st loss of the season, a ball is hit aerial in Blake Meyer’s direction. He charges in to ensure it carries, then quickly realises that is it going way over his head. The big fella throws it in reverse, back pedaling like you’ve never seen before. Then when all seems lost, he jumps with all his might and his left hand fully outstretched. He hits the ground, looks at his hand, and would you believe, it stuck. A great moment from a great bloke to have in our team.

Captain’s Comments;

The 2019/2020 cricket season was like no other, with bushfires , extreme heat policies & finally Covid 19 had the final say. For the times we did get on the field our team excelled in all depart- ments, we had plenty of bowlers, our fielding was beyond any other team & our batting spoke for itself, rarely did we bat past our top order . This team was the most diverse team I have ever been involved with, we had a huge range in age… from 13 year olds to 61 year olds, players in their very first ever year of cricket to a veter- an’s cricket international. Also it was a pleasure to have a couple of females in our squad. We spoke as a team earlier in the year about how well we were fielding at the time , we said that if we were still able to keep our fielding level up we would win the comp. We did just that, it was great to see everyone play the game not only for themselves but for their team mates, al- ways backing up their bowlers & encouraging in the field. It was a pleasure to lead the team in what was a very successful year for the entire club, I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves & hope to do it all again next year. Thanks heaps to Mark “Woggy” Whatman for his support throughout the year in running the team, along with the other “experienced players”, it was good to be able to bounce ideas off them.
