No.808, 7, Race Course Road, Khajanagar, Tiruchirapalli-620 020, India Abstract: The traditional system of medicine consists of large number of plants with various medicinal and pharmacological importance and hence considered as a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules. The Amaranthaceae family comprises of many species, which are used in nutrition and in traditional folk medicine for the treatment of several diseases such as infections, inflammation and fever. Gomphrena species found all over the world. It is commonly known as ‘Bachelor’s Button / Globe Amaranth’ and has been recognized in different traditional system of medicines for the treatment of various diseases of human being. The phytoconstituents present in it are flavonoids, phytosterols, phenolics and terpenoids. The different parts of this plant are traditionally claimed to be used for the treatment of broad spectrum of ailment including baby gripe, oligouria, body sore, malaria, bacterial infections, jaundice, urinary problems, high cholesterol, cough, fever, diarrhea, liver disorders, kidney disorders and cooling. Due to changes in the lifestyle and associated decline of the use of plants, the ethnobotanical knowledge is continuing to decline. Hence further work to isolate and characterise the active compounds responsible for this activities in the plant is recommended. Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. Received on:09-05-2012; Revised on: 14-06-2012; Accepted on:22-07-2012 ABSTRACT The plant Gomphrenaglobosa (L.) is an important medicinal plant of Bangladesh and used for oliguria, heat & empacho, hypertension, cough & diabetes, expectorant for animals and many others medicinal purposes locally. In order to observe different traditional uses in laboratory, crude methanolic fraction, n-Hexane soluble fraction, carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction, chloroform soluble fraction & aqueous soluble fraction of whole plant of Gomphrenaglobosa (L.) were subjected to antioxidant, brine shrimp lethality bioassay & antimicrobial screening tests. Among the entire fractions n-Hexane soluble fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity having IC50 value (13.17±0.308) µg/ml & highest phenolic content with (57.12±0.265) mg of GAE / gm of extractives and crude methanolic fraction showed significant antioxidant activity with IC50 value (20.35±0.360) µg/ml & (41.02±0.49) mg of GAE / gm of extractives which represents a positive correlation between free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content. Additionally chloroform soluble fraction showed significant cytotoxicity having LC50(0.331±0.029) µg/ml and carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction & chloroform soluble fraction exhibited mild to moderate antimicrobial activity having zone of inhibition (8±0.208)to (14±0.069) mm.

A family of 71 genera and over 1,000 species with a world-wide distribution in tropical and warm temperate regions; in Australia there are 15 genera, (including 4 introduced) and about 190 species. ABSTRACT A bromovirus isolated from sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was characterised and shown to be highly related to Pelargonium zonate spot virus (PZSV), a virus reported in Italy, Spain, France, USA and Israel. Sunflower plants showing chlorotic concentric ring and linear pattern symptoms were observed near Paraná city (Entre Ríos Province) in commercial sunflower crops. This was the first observation of this type of symptoms in sunflower in Argentina, but similar ones have been reported in Africa and Mexico. The aim of this study was to characterize this new sunflower disease. The characterization was based on virus transmission, host range, electron microscopy and comparison of its sequence with those of related viruses. Virus transmission efficiency by mechanical inoculation to sunflower plants at the V2 vegetative stage was nearly 100%. Seed transmission was negative as plants derived from seeds of systemically infected plants showed no symptoms. A host range including 27 species of the families Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Dipsacaceae, Fabaceae and Scrophulariaceae was tested, and 59.26% of the inoculated species showed positive plants to viral infection.
