Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

President’s Report

It gives me great pleasure to report on another strong season for the Gold Coast District Cricket Club both on and off the field. The club again fulfilled its mission to provide opportunities for our players to play at any level of cricket he or she is capable of. At the highest levels, Dolphins prominantly featured in Queensland (youth, men and women) and Australian teams (‘A’, youth and women). Congratulations to Michael Neser on his selection for Australia ‘A’ and to Delissa Kimmince on her continued selection in the Southern Stars. Delissa also topped a stellar year by being awarded her second consecutive Medal at the Queensland Grade Cricket Awards night.

Individual achievement was also shared with team success – well done to the Lord’s Taverners on again featuring prominantly on the premiership ladder, the 3rds for battling strongly all year to be just pipped at the post from making the semi finals and to our oustanding Women (both teams) on their minor premierships. Pleasingly, the Dolphins’ ethos of ‘playing hard, playing well, but playing fair’ was recognised by Queensland Cricket with our 1st Grade Men and Women’s teams winning their respective Spririt of Cricket Awards.

25th Anniversary Dinner

With Season 2014/15 being the Dolphins 25th year, there was no more fitting way than to celebrate with a huge anniversary dinner on the Australia Day weekend. A host of current and former Dolphins players and supporters gathered at the Robina Community Centre to reconnect and relive many a tale of years past. The club was fortunate to secure one of Australia’s feature sports writers – Robert Craddock to be the guest speaker. The night also saw the first inductees into the Dolphins Hall of Fame. Thanks must go to Martin Rogers for his work in producing the 25 Year Booklet, and to Tony Matthews and Tony Radanovic, who with Martin helped put together the event.

Bill Pippen Oval

After last year’s loss of the Dolphins’ inaugural President and Life Member – Bill Pippen, it was special for the club was able to appopriately recognise him with the renaming of the ground in his honour. Bill was a key driver in a small committee of like-minded cricket lovers that worked together to form the Dolphins and gain entry for them into the Brisbane Grade Competition. Perhaps fittingly, it was also Bill who was instrumental in securing Kerrydale for cricket from the Albert Shire Council in the early 1990’s.

International Cricket

In a first for Gold Coast cricket, the Dolphins this year hosted a series of international matches featuring teams from Australia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Ireland. The Australian women’s team, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, took on Pakistan in a four match series at Kerrydale, then a South Australian XI went up against Papua New Guinea and finally, the Dolphins hosted Ireland’s national cricket team as part of its 2015 Cricket World Cup preparations. The Irish held a three day camp at Kerrydale prior to playing the Queensland Bulls in a 50 over match.

Thank you

To our primary sponsors – Scoot Airlines, Salmon Earthmoving and Robina Home Hardware – thank you for your support and ongoing involvement with our club. To our members, please be sure to support our sponsors where you can and be sure to tell them you are a Dolphin!

The Club has been well served again this year by our Club Patron, Ros Bates MP, and local Gold Coast City councillor Jan Grew. We greatly appreciate their ongoing support. Also a special thank you to our Queensland Cricket Delegate – Rory 10

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

Solomon, and Cricket Gold Coast Directors—Archie Morris, Tony Radanovic and Greg Kaddatz. I must also thank the efforts of the coaching staff who were ably led this year by Senior Coach Damian Wallis and Women’s Coach Garry Lovett. Thanks also to our groundsman Rick Shenton for ensuring we play on one of the best in the State. I would also like to thank the Management Committee members that worked hard to keep the club where it is throughout the year – Alan McGillivray (Vice President), Gerry Stevens (Secretary), Simon Matthews (Treasurer), Cameron Brimblecombe, Tony Radanovic, Greg Kaddatz, Jason Hocking and Scott Black.

As has been my theme over the last couple of years, the three Dolphin ‘P’s are areas where the club needs a continued focus – Participation, Profile and Performance. Having made a concerted effort to move along each of these areas, it is pleasing to report that good progress is being made on some and we are getting there on others.

Participation

Perhaps our hardest ‘P’, getting people involved both on and off the field continues to be a challenge for a club such as ours. This year was better in relation to player numbers, but there is still more to do. Initiatives such as the girls T20 Blast have helped the women’s program, and expanding our recruitment reach beyond one or two traditional areas of focus will assist the men. The high quality of our facilities and coaching provides a significant pull factor for players wishing to join the Dolphins and should not be understated.

With expecting more of Premier Grade Clubs in relation to talent identification and development, the prospect of forming a Dolphins Academy or similar styled squad of promising 13 to 17 year old cricketers is something we should explore further. Off the field, more hands are needed to help share the volunteer workload amongst our non- playing members.

Profile

The international matches at the start of the season helped to significantly raise our profile not only on the Gold Coast, but in the wider cricket community. Our social media presence has taken us worldwide has also helped to get the Dolphins’ message out. This is demonstrated by the fact over 20% of our Facebook followers come from Pakistan, India, New Zealand and the UK. However, the challenge remains of how to harness and grow this support for the mutual benefit of the club, its members and cricket in general.

Performance

The most important ‘P’, this year it provided a mixed bag of success. The oustanding team efforts of the Women continue to lead the way and there are glimpses of what is required through all of the men’s grades. For some of us, there is still some maturing to do about what it means to be part of, and more importantly contribute to, a grade cricket club. Pleasingly, these instances are rare and an overwhelming commitment to the club and each other is strong throughout our grades. This is clearly evident in the way we play, train and socialise. Standing together to perform when it counts, will provide opportunity for both individual and team success well into the future. Go the Fins!

We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

Men’s Report

The 2014/15 season on the field can not be judged purely on the basis of where the respective teams finished on the ladder. Whilst we did not manage to have any men’s teams contesting the finals , there was plenty of positives to take from the efforts of all.

1st Grade

The 1st Grade side this season saw it fielding the youngest of any of the clubs on the basis of average playing age. This meant that a lot of players were asked to learn very quickly what it meant to play Premier Grade Cricket. While we did not manage to get the amount of wins we would have liked , it was certainly not through lack of effort and commitment . I am sure with a years experience under the belt , this team will be able to turn the result of some of the close losses into wins next year.

It was great to see Andrew Robinson continue from where he left off the previous season to again be the competition’s leading run scorer. A wonderful feat, and one that most believed should have been enough to see him pushing for higher honours again. A special mention to Oscar Richardson who made his debut hundred this season. It was an innings of real maturity and I am sure it will be the first of many. The group should also be very proud of their efforts this year. With not much experience between them , they never shirked the issue and kept turning up for one another..

The most pleasing aspect of the season was the fact that every player had their moments of individual success. This should be enough to make every one of them believe that they not only belong but can also be strong contributors at this level in the coming years. It was a close knit bunch of guys that had a lot of good fun on and off the field and I believe we can hold our heads high with the way we played the game. It is an exciting time for this group and for future Dolphins 1st Grade players.

2nd Grade

The 2nd Grade team acquitted themselves admirably this season. Again it was full of young and exciting players that managed to have their fair share of wins and probably with a bit of luck could have had a few more. Much like the 1st Grade side, there was success at some stage from pretty much every player throughout the season.

Among the highlights was the rare feat of a double hat trick by promising fast bowler Ryan Mccloy. Tyler Smith should also be commended for the great season he had with his leg spinners which saw him top the taking list for the club. A special mention goes to Jack Hargreaves for his wonderful efforts as this year. It's not an easy job dealing with the movement of players from week to week up and down the grades whilst trying to build a competitive unit . It was a credit to him and the players for the brand of cricket they played and the spirit they showed throughout. A strong 2nd Grade side is a must for a successful 1st Grade side and I can only see big things for this grade next season.

3rd Grade

The third grade team had a very successful year and were mightily unlucky not feature in the finals . It was probably their early success that played a small part in the team missing out on the semis. A lot of the players that started in this grade performed so well that they were rewarded by selection in 2nd Grade and some even worked their way up to 1st Grade - this is exactly what our club wants from a third grade side. To be competitive but most of all to be a stepping stone for a lot of younger players on their journey towards higher honours.

Whilst there was a lot of changes throughout the season, and having been let down by a senior player at the very start of the season, special mention goes to Richard Cook and John Goodman who for the most part were in charge of captaining this side. All of those who played thirds this year should be extremely proud of their efforts. Again it was pleasing to see a brand of cricket played that all Dolphins should aspire to. 12

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

4th Grade

Our 4th Grade side this year was again a team that saw the playing line up change markedly throughout. One ever constant though was the captain Scott Morris who cannot be thanked enough for his efforts on and off the field this season. Having senior players in all teams is such a valuable commodity and nowhere was it more needed than in 4th Grade with them being such a young playing group. They had some good wins throughout the year and it was very pleasing to see guys performing and then continuing to do the same when they were promoted to the higher grades. It was also very pleasing to see the sons of former players coming into this grade at the end of the season along with some other youngsters. This early exposure to men's cricket will be such a valuable experience and will help fast track their development as players. They were a breath of fresh air at training and no doubt we have some future Dolphin stars in the making.

Lord’s Taverners

The Lord’s Taverners Under 17 team this year was one of the most talented group of young players we have seen at the club in a long time. Whilst there would have been a slight feeling of disappointment at not being able to go back to back in winning the premiership , the players should be very proud of their efforts. Again there were a lot of contributions from every player at some stage throughout the season and one of the pleasing things was to see a lot of these players making the step up into the grade ranks. Six players in all played 2nd Grade and one made his debut in 1st Grade which signals the strength of this unit.

Whilst it is great to win premierships at this level , I see the real role of this competition is to introduce players into the club, then into grade cricket, and then hopefully onto higher levels. I believe we are on the right track with this goal and we are certainly the envy of other clubs with the talent we are producing at this level. The key for each player is to realise that there is a lot of hard work that is required from now on. Talent at Under 17 level will only take you so far in men's cricket.

A big thankyou must go to Jason ' Buddha' Hocking who again gave up his time to look after this group. He did a wonderful job and thanks must also go to Scott Black (Manager) and the parents who helped throughout the year.

Representative Players

Once again we were well represented in the state and national teams this year. Michael Neser, Nick Stevens and Cameron Brimblecombe all played for the Queensland Bulls this year. A big congratulations to Nick who made his debut against South Australia to signal his arrival on the big stage. No doubt it is the first of many for him. Also congratulations to Cameron who made his debut against . I'm sure it will be something he never forgets and it was a great moment to have another Dolphin representing the state.

Matthew Kuhnemann represented Queensland and Australia at Under 19 level this year to signal what a bright future he has. He was joined by Ryan Mccloy in the Under 19's team that played at the National Championships. Ryan who was new to the club this year was a great example of getting rewarded for good performances and a lot of hard work dating back to pre season. A great example of the old adage 'it's not where you start but where you finish' - he started the year in 4th Grade.

Alex Melville also represented the club at the Under 19 National Championships when he was selected in the ACT/NSW Country team. He also gained selection in the Queensland Imparja Cup team. Again, another great example of someone putting in the hard work at training and getting their just reward. Certainly one of the most improved players at the club who has a big future.

In the Queensland Under 17's team we probably could have had more named in the team but still had the most representation with four players going away to the National Championships. Callum Taylor, Xavier Bartlett, Sam Yabsley and Isaac Fisher were all part of this squad and performed admirably. Isaac Fisher continued his memorable first season at the club when he made 152 against New South Wales . This no doubt went along way towards helping him be named in

13

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

the Honorary Australian team of the championship, continuing a wonderful run of success for our players from ‘the wrong side of the border'.

Training

I was extremely pleased with the efforts of all at training this year. I believe it is easy to judge the effort and character of a training squad by the numbers that are turning up to sessions at the end of the season. Our numbers were still very good during this period and it augurs well for the future. A big thank you must go to Brad Ipson and Scott Muller who were on board to help as specialist coaches this year. It's great to have not only former Test and First Class players coaching our players but two of the Dolphin greats . This should never be taken for granted as a lot of other clubs would envy having this luxury.

I believe that the potential of the current playing group at the club is as good anything in the competition. It is up to us as players as to how far we want to take that potential. As long as we don't take short cuts, keep having fun and continue to wear our baggy blue with pride, we'll be on our way to we want to be.

Thank you

A final thank you goes to President Jeff Pfaff and the fellow Management Committee members for their tireless efforts throughout their season. So many of the thankless off field tasks were performed by these men which made my job as coach so much easier and allowed the players the privilege of playing and training on such wonderful facilities. These people should never be taken for granted and I am sure they would welcome any players or player’s parents who would like to join them on the committee in the coming season.

Let’s look forward to a great 2015/16 season.

Damian Wallis Senior Coach

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

Women’s Report

The 2014/15 season was another successful year for our ladies in so many ways, as a group and as individuals all starting with an extensive pre-season training program targeting fitness and agility. To finish up Minor Premiers in both grades for the 2nd year running is an amazing effort for such a young group. My main objective this season as Head Coach was to grow and develop the group to become Queensland/NSW and Australian representatives at a junior and senior level. With the numbers this year that represented at all levels, this was achieved by the entire coaching group.

We had a lot of standout individual performances this year and none better than Delissa Kimmince (Kath Smith Medal Winner) and Shareene Ferrier who both led from the front with both bat and ball. Highlights included:

1st Grade . D. Kimmince - 125 and 4/29 . S.J. Johnson – 95 . J. Coleman – 76 . Godfrey – 71 and 4/18 . M. Byriel – 56 (T20) . E. Kelly – 51 . N. Ovasuru – 50 and 4/30

2nd Grade . S. Ferrier - 100 and 4/13 and hat trick . C. Fuller - 57 . R. Cantwell – 54 not out and 3/19 . T. Roessler – 54 not out . L. Lovett – 33 not out (GF) and 2/8 . H. Laurence - 4/7

The list of brilliant performances goes on and on. The effort shown by the entire playing group was second to none and their results reflect that. I would like to give a special mention to our NSW girls and parents who travelled up the motorway on a Sunday to be a part of our playing group this year. Such commitment shows their love of the game and their willingness to improve on their game. As a club it is important that we harness the youth and the talent and provide a platform for our ladies future success.

I would also like to take the time to thank Jill Shephard who has been my rock from the start and up until now as part of the coaching staff with our ladies, who is now looking to move on and concentrate on her new endeavour of umpiring at a Local and State level. I know for a fact the success that we have had over the last 4–5 years would not have been achieved without your passion, knowledge and drive – thanks Jill and best of luck.

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

I would like to thank Jeff Pfaff and the entire Management Committee who volunteer their time each day and each week to give us one of the best facilities to train and play on in the entire competition. Further, I would like to congratulate Wally and the entire Mens playing group in the success that they have had this season and for the support that the entire group has shown to our ladies – Thanks Wal.

To grounds man Rick Shenton – what can I say apart from brilliant effort mate – every Sunday morning getting the square and wicket ready without fail, I could not thank you enough and the girls really appreciate playing on a quality ground and most important a quality wicket each Sunday – Thanks Rick.

With all this said, I could not be more proud of the effort shown by the entire playing group, and as a Coach I am so proud of the success that our ladies had as individuals and as a group. I am really looking forward to next season in developing the talent of both our juniors and seniors at our Club to ensure the success that we have had over the years.

Bigger and better in 2015/16!

International Women’s T20 Series

Australia vs Pakistan Kerrydale Oval, 30 & 31 August, 3 & 5 September 2015

In a great way to start the season, the Dolphins hosted a four match T20 series between the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars and Pakistan in late August / early September. The matches showcased the very high standard of our facilities and our capability to host such matches in future. It was also pleasing to see a healthy crowd of Gold Coast cricket supporters attend the weekend matches of the series. In a first for Gold Coast cricket, the matches were also broadcast live on cricket.com.au and ABC Radio.

For the Southern Stars, it was their first matches since being crowned World T20 Champions earlier in 2014. They easlily lived up to their World Champions crown by sweeping Pakistan aside 4-0 in the series. A highlight was our own Delissa Kimmince playing a starring role in the series, including being named player-of-the-match in Game 2.

With any events such as this, it is the people behind the scenes that make it a success. Much thanks must go to Cr Jan Grew and Peter Apps from the City of Gold Coast Council for their support and to all our members that helped – whether it be in the canteen, on the ground or on the scoreboard, all of you contributed to a very successful event.

Kath Smith Medalist Delissa Kimmince

For the second year running, Dolphin, and Southern Stars all-rounder Delissa Kimmince has taken out the Kath Smith Medal for the best and fairest player in Queensland Cricket’s Women’s Grade Competition. Delissa easily won the Medal by 11-points over fellow Queensland representative .

Delissa made her international debut as an 18-year-old opening bowler, before three year break from the game. On her return to the Queensland Fire in 2012-13, she quickly showed the form required to play international cricket again, but this time with the added string to her bow of a free-flowing opening batter.

The switch from leather to willow soon bore fruit, with Delissa winning player of the final honours in the Fire’s successful 2013-14 domestic Women’s T20 victory and earning herself a place in the victorious Australian squad to Bangladesh for the ICC Women’s World tournament.

Delissa commenced the year with a Player of the Match performance for the Southern Stars in the second of the Kerrydale T20’s against Pakistan. For the Dolphins, Delissa finished the season with 531-runs and 13-wickets.

Kath Smith Medal Count:

1st: Delissa Kimmince Gold Coast – 35 Points

2nd: Jodie Fields Western Suburbs – 24 Points

3rd: Western Suburbs – 19 Points

ICC 2015 World Cup Training Camp Ireland vs Queensland Bulls

As part of its 2015 Cricket World Cup preparations, the Dolphins hosted Ireland’s national cricket team for a three day camp at Kerrydale prior to playing the Queensland Bulls in a 50 over match. The Ireland visit gave the club an opportunity to gain exposure to the requirement of hosting elite cricket. Pleasingly, the club and its facilties came through with flying colours. So much so, that Ireland’s Coach Phil Simmons first request was to come back to the club during the World Cup proper. Unfortunately, commercial restraints prevented that from happening, but now the seed has been planted, more opportunities may exisit to host both domestice and internationsl teams in future seasons.

Despite the occasion of it being Ireland’s first ever match in Australia, the Bulls easily accounted for their international rivals posting a massive 230 run win.

The Gold Coast’s best ‘photobombers’ did not miss an opportunity when the Cricket World Cup Trophy came to Kerrydale – Archie Morris and Tony Radanovic with Ireland’s Roy Torrens (Manager) and Phil Simmons (Head Coach)

Hall of Fame

In this, our 25th Year, the club instituted a Gold Coast Dolphins’ Hall of Fame to recognise those outstanding players who have turned out for the Dolphins. Separate to Life Membership (which remains for any member that contributes distinguished service to the club), the Hall of Fame is open to players only that meet an exacting selection criteria.

Selection Criteria

Selection is open to former Dolphins’ players that have obtained ‘legend’ status within the club in addition to their outstanding statistical records or representative achievements. All inductees must have ceased playing for the Dolphins for at least three (3) years to be eligible for selection.

At a minimum, players should have played fifty (50) games or scored one thousand (1000) runs or taken one hundred (100) wickets for the club. Except for the inaugural inductions, the number of inductees in any one year will be limited to two (2) players.

Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductees

In January 2015, three inaugural inductees to the Gold Coast Dolphins’ Hall of Fame were made, they were:

Scott Muller

The first Dolphin to complete the Gold Coast Player Pathway – from Gold Coast Junior Cricket to playing for Australia, Scott Muller is a fitting Hall of Fame inductee. A member of the 1st Grade side on the club’s first day of competition, Scott was also captain of the club’s inaugural 1st Grade Premiership in 2002/03 and took 324 wickets at 22.33 from 158 matches. His first-class career for Queensland began in 1990/91 and concluded with a Pura Cup title in 1999/2000. In between, his 30 matches produced 102 wickets at 23.50 to underline his class. He played two tests against Pakistan in 1999/2000, becoming Australia’s 382nd player to be awarded the Baggy Green cap.

Daniel Doran

One of the Dolphins’ most devastating bowlers, leg spinner Daniel Doran took 328 wickets at 18.37 for the club from only 136 matches. A cornerstone of the powerhouse Dolphins 1st Grade Premiership teams of the late 2000’s; Daniel also played 32 first-class matches for Queensland including a winning Sheffield Shield final in 2005/06. As his Dolphins returns suggest, his 43 first-class could have perhaps been the start of something more, yet Queensland’s loss was the Dolphins gain, as his return to Kerrydale helped shape the winning culture at the club for a decade or more.

Jeff Pfaff

Another member of the Dolphins’ 1st Grade side on the opening day of fixtures, Jeff Pfaff went on to play 223 matches for the club, scoring 7,214 runs and taking 111 wickets. He was part of the 1st Grade Premiership winning team in 2002/03. Having been the first Dolphin to win a Peter Burge Medal in 1996/97, Jeff went on to play a handful of pre-season games for Queensland and the Queensland 2nd XI that following year.

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Annual Report – Season 2014/15

Bill Pippen Oval

During the year, the club was proud to be able to recognise one of its founding fathers in the renaming of Kerrydale Oval to the Bill Pippen Oval. Bill’s drive and commitment led to not only the formation of the club, but created a previously unavailable direct pathway for local sports men and women to be based on the Gold Coast and be able to go on to represent Queensland and Australia. Bill was also the Dolphins’ first President and Life Member.

Prior to the formation of the Gold Coast District Cricket Club, Bill played an active role in the playing and administration of local cricket on the Gold Coast. Originally from Sydney, on moving to the Gold Coast he became a playing member of Southport Cricket Club. Bill also undertook other roles in the sport, these included:

. Serving as Secretary of the Gold Coast & District Cricket Association for a number of years in the late 1980s; . A member of the Queensland Country Cricket Umpires Association and the Gold Coast Cricket Umpires Association; and . Team manager and selector of the Webb Shield Representative team. Bill was a key part of a small committee of like-minded cricket lovers that worked together in 1990 to form the club and gain entry for them into the Brisbane Grade Competition. In a first for Queensland Cricket, the Dolphins were at that stage, the only regional team ever to be admitted to the Brisbane competition. Following the Dolphins successful entry, the model has now been replicated on the Sunshine Coast and in Ipswich.

While others also played a part in forming the club, there is no doubt it was Bill’s drive and passion that was the reason it all happened. Having to harness the support of local cricket clubs and the local association was no mean feat. However, then having to convince the cricket establishment in Brisbane to break with over 100 years of tradition and admit a regional based team to their competition for the first time was quite an achievement. Certainly current cricket administrators reflect how difficult such a task would be given the sometimes political and logistical challenges of the sport.

Financial Reports

Gold Coast District Cricket Club Incorporated Audit Report for the year ended 31 March 2015

Scope

The financial report comprises the statement of financial position and statement of financial performance for the year ended 31 March 2015. This Report has been prepared for distribution to Members for the purpose of fulfilling the Management Committee’s financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Qld). I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the Members, or for any other purpose than that for which it was prepared.

Audit Approach

This independent audit was conducted in order to express an opinion to the members of the Association. This audit was conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, in order to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material misstatement.

Qualification

It is not practical for the Association to maintain complete control over all receipts prior to them being recorded in the books of account. As there are no practical audit procedures to quantify the effect of this, I am unable to express an opinion on such receipts prior to them being recorded in the books of the account.

Goods and Services Tax

It is noted the Association’s annual turnover is now likely to exceed the level at which the Association is required to register for the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Compliance with the GST Law is a matter for the Management Committee and does not form part of the scope of this opinion.

Audit Opinion

In my opinion, the financial report of the Association presents a true and fair view in accordance with relevant accounting policies, the financial position of the Association as at 31 March 2015 and the results of its operations for the year then ended.
