A corpus of 7h30 of code-switched speech from 20 French-Algerian Arabic speakers (5h of spontaneous speech and 2h30 of read speech) has been designed, recorded and annotated. One of the first challenges tackled consisted of developing data processing methods such as language segmentation, code-switching utterance segmentation as well as transcription in French and Algerian Arabic dialect. Automatic speech alignment methods were adapted to process the code-switched data by combining two monolingual alignment systems thus producing time-stamped orthographic and phonemic transcriptions in both lan- guages. An experiment was conducted to automatically detect language switches, however this remains a challenge especially for small speech stretches. A second aspect of this the- sis’ research studied the influence of the phonological system of language a on the second language b in code-switched speech, in this case the phonetic productions of French and Algerian Arabic. The annotated corpus was used to carry out phonetic studies on vowel and consonant variation using an automatic ABX-like phone discrimination paradigm. With this paradigm, our results on variation in code-switched speech vowel productions are in line with a priori hypotheses: considering the peripheral /i,a,u/ vowels, higher variant rates are measured in Algerian Arabic (40%) than in French (27%). A comparison with native French control speakers suggests that the bilingual speakers have more conservative vowel productions than natives (34%), at least in code-switched speech. Three types of consonant variation were also explored: gemination, emphatization and voicing alternation. Overall, consonants show similar trends to vowels: 42% variant rates for Algerian Arabic, 30% for French in code-switched speech, compared with 38% for French natives. Future studies using this innovative corpus will contribute to disentangle the complex interplay between phonetic variation and phonological systems in bilingual code-switching speakers. iii Résumé Cette thèse traite du code-switching français-arabe algérien à l’aide d’outils de traitement automatique de la parole. Un corpus de 7h30 de parole de 20 locuteurs bilingues (5h de parole spontanée et 2h30 de parole lue) a été conçu, enregistré et annoté. L’un des premiers défis abordés a consisté à développer des méthodes de traitement des données telles que la segmentation en langues, la transcription du français et de l’arabe algérien. Les méth- odes d’alignement automatique de la parole ont été adaptées pour traiter les données du code-switching en combinant deux systèmes d’alignement monolingues, produisant ainsi des transcriptions orthographiques et phonémiques avec des localisations temporelles dans les deux langues. Une expérience a été menée pour détecter automatiquement les change- ments de langue, mais cela reste un défi, en particulier pour les durées monolingues très courtes. Le second aspect de la recherche de cette thèse porte sur l’influence du système phonologique de la langue a sur la deuxième langue b dans la parole du code-switching, en l’occurrence les productions phonétiques de l’arabe et du français. Le corpus annoté a été utilisé pour effectuer des études phonétiques sur la variation des voyelles et des consonnes en utilisant un paradigme de discrimination automatique de type ABX. Avec ce paradigme, nos résultats sur la variation de la production correspondent aux hypothèses a priori: con- sidérant les voyelles périphériques /i,a,u/, des taux de variantes plus élevés sont mesurés en arabe algérien (40%) qu’en français (27%). Une comparaison avec des locuteurs de langue maternelle française suggère que les locuteurs bilingues ont des productions de voyelles plus conservatrices que les locuteurs natifs (34%), du moins dans le code-switching. Trois études sur la variation des consonnes ont également été menées: la gemination, l’emphatisation. Globalement, les consonnes présentent des tendances similaires à celles des voyelles : 42% de taux de variantes pour l’arabe algérien et 30% pour le français en code-switching, con- tre 38% pour les natifs français. De futures études utilisant ce corpus novateur pourront contribuer à démêler l’interaction complexe entre la variation phonétique et les systèmes phonologiques chez les bilingues dans le code-switching. iv Remerciements Il m’est très difficile de remercier toutes les personnes qui ont contribué à l’aboutissement de cette thèse. In Cochabamba, Bolivia, Quechua and Spanish have been in contact for over 500 years. In this thesis, I explore sociolinguistic variation among bilingual speakers of Cochabamba Quechua (CQ) and Spanish by investigating the relationship between the production of the voiceless uvular stop /q/ and speakers’ sociolinguistic backgrounds. I conducted a speech production study and sociolinguistic interview with seven bilingual CQ-Spanish speakers. I analyzed manner of articulation and place of articulation variation. Results indicate that manner of articulation varies primarily due to phonological factors, and place of articulation varies according to sociolinguistic factors. This reveals that among bilingual CQ-Spanish speakers, production of voiceless uvular stop /q/ does vary sociolinguistically.

The only sources of knowledge available are either archaic or targeted towards other disciplines such as education. This research conducted a three- stage study. First, Arabic phonology research was reviewed in general, and the results of this review were triangulated with expert opinions – gathered throughout the project – to create a novel formalisation of Arabic phonology for speech synthesis. Secondly, this formalisation was used to create a speech corpus in Modern Standard Arabic and this corpus was used to produce a speech synthesiser. This corpus was the first to be constructed and published for this dialect of Arabic using scientifically-supported phonological formalisms. The corpus was semi-automatically annotated with phoneme boundaries and stress marks; it is word-aligned with the orthographical transcript. The accuracy of these alignments was compared with previous published work, which showed that even slightly less accurate alignments are sufficient for producing high quality synthesis. Finally, objective and subjective evaluations were conducted to assess the quality of this corpus. The objective evaluation showed that the corpus based on the proposed phonological formalism had sufficient phonetic coverage compared with previous work. The subjective evaluation showed that this corpus can be used to produce high quality parametric and unit selection speech synthesisers.

SMITH2 1University of California, Berkeley and 2University of New Mexico Introduction One aspect of the maintenance of languages is the maintenance of the appropriate pronunciation. A language whose speakers use it only a minority of the time is often strongly affected by the phonetic patterns of the dominant language, particularly as speech habits natural to the ‘new’ language are carried over to the traditional one. Documenting the phonetic patterns of those speakers who were the last to have learned the language in question as their first language can provide an appropriate source of guidance to the pronunciation to adopt for later generations. In this paper we aim to present a good description of certain important aspects of the pronunciation of the stops of Tlingit. We hope that this data will be of value to those interested in the continuation of Tlingit as a spoken language. Of course, all languages change over time, and pronunciation will evolve in natural ways, so this information should be used in ways that accommodate natural changes. This data will also have value for comparative phonetic studies as illustrating details of a language whose phonetics has been previously little studied. Tlingit ([!i"ít]) is a Na-Dene language (Krauss 1979) spoken in South-East Alaska and the Yukon. There are now few fluent speakers under the age of 60 (Dauenhauer and Dauenhauer 1995). The language has some dialect variation, with particular differences noted between Inland or Yukon Tlingit and Coastal or Alaskan varieties, and further differences between Northern, Central, and Southern varieties along the Coast.

This observation is illustrated with the diachronic developments of retroflexes in Norwegian (North- Germanic), Nyawaygi (Australian) and Minto-Nenana (Athapaskan). The developments in these three languages are modelled in a perceptually oriented phonological theory, since traditional articulatorily-based features cannot deal with such processes. 1 Introduction Cross-linguistically, retroflexes occur relatively infrequently. From the 317 languages of the UPSI database (Maddieson 1984, 1986), only 8.5 % have a voiceless retroflex stop [ˇ], 7.3 % a voiced stop [Í], 5.3 % a voiceless retroflex fricative [ß], 0.9 % a voiced fricative [¸], and 5.9 % a retroflex nasal [˜]. Compared to other segmental classes that are considered infrequent, such as a palatal nasal [¯], which occurs in 33.7 % of the UPSID languages, and the uvular stop [q], which occurs in 14.8 % of the languages, the percentages for retroflexes are strikingly low. Furthermore, typically only large segment inventories have a retroflex class, i.e. at least another coronal segment (apical or laminal) is present, as in Sanskrit, Hindi, Norwegian, Swedish, and numerous Australian Aboriginal languages. Maddieson’s (1984) database includes only one exception to this general tendency, namely the Dravidian language Kota, which has a retroflex as its only coronal fricative.

It is found that French back vowels are readily adapted with pharyngealized emphatics while the front vowels tend to resist this correspondence. Th e implications of the phenomenon for general models of loanword adaptation are considered. It is concluded that auditory similarity and salience are critical alternative dimensions of faithfulness that may override correspondences based on phonologically contrastive features. PREFACE The aim of this thesis is to describe and study analytically the dialect of the Harb tribe, and to determine its position among the neighbouring tribes. Harb is a very large tribe occupying an extensive area of Saudi Arabia, and it was impracticable for one individual to survey every settlement. This would have occupied a lengthy period, and would best be done by a team of investigators, rather than an individual. Thus we have limited our investigation to-two"-selected'regions, which we believe to be representative, the first ranging from north-east Rabigh up to al-Madina (representing the speech of the Harb in the Hijaz), and the second ranging from al-Madina to al-Fawwara in al-Qasirn district (representing the speech of the Harb in Central Arabia). We have thus left out of consideration an area extending fromCOsfän to Räbigh, where some-. members-of the Harb, partic- ularly those of the Muabbad, Bishr and Zubaid clan live. We have been unable in the northern central region, to go as far as al-Quwära and Dukhnah. However, some Harbis from the unsurveyed area were met with in our regions, and samples of their speech were obtained and included. Within these limitations, however the datä'collected are substantial and it is hoped comprehensive enough to give a clear picture of the main features of the Harb dialect.

  • The Realization of the Uvular Stop [Q] in Arabic: the Phonetic
    A Diachronic Phonetic and Phonological Study of the Uvular Stop [q] in Arabic Author’s name: Taoufik GOUMA Affiliation: University Paris 8 E-mail: [email protected] Among the different linguistic phenomena related to the study of Arabic linguistics and particularly its phonology and phonetics, we find one related to the analysis of the uvular stop [q]. This phoneme attracted the attention of early Arab grammarians as well as many orientalists and modern linguists for the different issues related to its evolution and treatment. We are going to explore here two of these. First of all we are going to give a diachronic analysis of this segment in early Classical Arabic (CA henceforth) which is intended to determine its early phonetic realization. According to the descriptions of some early Arab grammarians (such as Sibawayh and Ibn Jinni) the [q] of CA had the phonetic value of [g]. Sibawayh for example describes it as majhuura (voiced) and as being articulated in ‘aqsā llisan wama fawqahu mina lanak al alā’ (Al Kitāb, Vol 4, p. 433), i. e. as a velar. Following Sibawayh, Ibn Jinni gives the same description when he says ‘wa mimā fawqa dālika makhraju lqāf’ (Sir Senāat al Irāb, Vol 1, p. 278). Finally, Avicenna also describes it, in his ‘’Rissāla’’, as a velar when he says that it is realized in the place of articulation of [x]. But, when we look at the analysis of Ibn yaich (Sharal Mufassal, Vol 10, p. 124) we find that he puts it in the same place of articulation as [k] and defines this place as lahāt, i.
