Proceedings ● ISBN 978-86-81294-03-1 __________________________________________________________________________________ Preface The aim of the 4th International e-Conference on Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (4IeCSHSS) was to bring together scholars, administrators and students from different countries, and to discuss theoretical and practical issues in different areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. The e-Conference was organized as a kind of a multi-disciplinary forum which provided the appropriate opportunities for inter-disciplinary communications. The areas of study covered by the e-Conference were the following: Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology, Science of Education, History, Linguistics, Arts, Sociology, Political Science, Law, and Economics. The e-Conference was organized in cooperation with the COAS Partner Institutions: South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Faculty of Philosophy, Blagoevgrad, BULGARIA, and University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev”, Faculty of Business and Management, Ruse, BULGARIA. The e-Conference was organized exclusively as an online conference, and the English was the only language of the conference. Two phases of the e-Conference realization was applied. The first phase was realized as the e-Pre-Conference Discussion (from 20 to 23 December 2019), and this phase was followed by the posting at the COAS website different textual forms sent by the e-Conference participants, such as discussions, analyses, critics, comments, suggestions, proposals, etc., regarding exposed abstracts. The second phase was the e-Conference Discussion, and it was realized at the e-Conference day (24 December 2019), from 00 to 24 (GMT+01:00). This discussion was realized in the same way as the e-Pre-Conference discussion, regarding the full texts exposed at the COAS website. All submitted abstracts/full texts went through two reviewing processes: (1) double-blind (at least two reviewers), and (2) non-blind (two members of the Scientific Committee). Thus, final decision for the presenting and publishing depended of these two kinds of reviews, in order to be accepted for presentation at the conference and to be published in the e-Conference Proceedings. The Conference Proceedings will be submitted for indexing in different international databases. Finally, we would like to thanks to all participants of the e-Conference, as well as to all reviewers and editors, for their efforts, which enable that the e-Conference was productive experience. We are looking forward to the 5th International e-Conference on Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (5IeCSHSS) that will be held on 28 June 2020, using the same online model. We hope that it will be an interesting and enjoying at least as the previous e-Conference. The Peter Ludwig Collection in Bulgaria Galina Dekova, PhD National Academy of Art, Bulgaria Abstract This paper discusses the political background of the rejection of Peter Ludwig’s donation and the refusal of Bulgarian authorities to participate in the creation of а Peter Ludwig Collection of Contemporary Art in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was one of Ludwig’s destinations in the 1980s, when he visited artists’ studios and established relations with the political elite. As a result, Bulgarian art from his collection was shown in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe. Given his commitment to Bulgarian art he expressed the wish to donate a significant collection of contemporary art to the Bulgarian state. The response to the idea was a proposal for the inauguration of the first of a kind institution to promote contemporary art in Bulgaria. As it was conceived in the wake of major political changes before 1989, however, it relied upon structures from the communist past, and could not be realized in the years that followed. The project sank into oblivion and was never made public or discussed afterwards. Keywords: Bulgarian art, collections, museum for contemporary art, Peter Ludwig, gallery Introduction The study is a continuation of a recently interrupted project that I started in 2017 in collaboration with Svetlin Rusev, one of the main protagonists in that pursuit. The project then seemed to ponder a misleading question: Should Bulgarian culture and Bulgarian research preserve and revisit the problematic memory of Peter Ludwig's museum in Bulgaria that was never realized? The result of it would have been a publication and a documentary exhibition with reproductions of works and originals and was planned to be a poetic and artistic reminiscence of a grand intention that had failed.

Żurawia 4, 00-503 Warsaw, Poland e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article* offers an anthropological analysis of a conflict over the use of a set of ‘healing chains’ and other focal objects kept in the Orthodox Christian monastery of Saints Kosmas and Damian in Kuklen, Bulgaria. In a nutshell, the conflict cap- tures the leading religious imageries propagated by the custodians of the mon- astery on the one hand, and the spiritual leaders of a new religious movement, so-called Deunovians, on the other. The analysis helps situate some of the sig- nificant changes currently affecting the religious culture of Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria within a broader social and cultural context.     Bulgarian Cultural Diplomacy before and after the 1990s: The case of Japan(GADJEVA) Article Bulgarian Cultural Diplomacy before and after the 1990s: The case of Japan GADJEVA, Nadejda Petrova Abstract The previous article in this series explored Japanese public diplomacy and soft power in Bulgaria. This article focuses on Bulgarian cultural diplomacy in Japan. The paper examines the Bulgarian cultural diplomacy strategy in Japan before and after the 1990s. It puts emphasis on Bulgarian cultural diplomacy dimensions both autonomously and as a representative of the European Union. The article demonstrates how through various cultural diplomacy initiatives in Japan, Bulgaria increased its cultural presence in the country. It also observes the contribution of the Bulgarian cultural diplomacy to the strengthening of Bulgarian-Japanese cultural, political, and economic relations during the periods. The reason for dividing the analysis of the relations into two major periods is that the 1990s had a big impact on the Bulgarian international relations and internal policy. Bulgaria started a long transition from state socialism and a one-party political system to a multi-party democracy and liberal market economy, which led to certain transformations in Bulgarian foreign policy. The major focus of the country on the emerging social changes provided a totally different context for Bulgarian-Japanese relations. This was an attempt to remember Lyudmila Zhivkova and promote a positive image in the public sphere, yet it provoked a fierce response in the media from political parties and citizens indicating that the memory of socialism is a 'hot' issue in Bulgaria. Koenker Associate Professor Zsuzsa Gille Associate Professor Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi Professor Peter Fritzsche Abstract “Occult Communism” explores the unlikely infusion of state-sponsored spiritualism into the materialist ideology of Bulgarian late communism. In the 1970s, Minister of Culture Lyudmila Zhivkova initiated grandiose state programs to inject the “occult” into Bulgaria’s national culture, art, science and even political philosophy. Inspired by her Eastern religious beliefs, she sought to ‘breed’ a nation of “all-round and harmoniously developed individuals,” devoted to spiritual self-perfection, who would ultimately “work, live and create according to the laws of beauty.” My project focuses on how Zhivkova translated her religio-philosophical worldview into state policies. I examine three realms of what I have termed “occult communism:” Zhivkova’s domestic and international cultural initiatives; occult religiosity and the mystical movement known as the White Brotherhood; and occult science as embodied by the Scientific Institute of Suggestology. I contend that as quixotic as Zhivkova’s vision was, her policies contributed to the liberalization of art and culture in a period that has long been associated exclusively with stagnation and decay.

Seeking a more nuanced and more evolved understanding of the role of the television in Bulgaria during socialist and in post-socialist times, this essay argues for a ‘situated’ reading of these historical developments, theorising that socialist and post-socialist television are indeed defined by disparate, yet equally influential and dynamic, cultural and political processes. From the ‘golden age’ of communist-era television, during which TV was hailed as a main force for mobilisation, education and entertainment, we will trace the ‘boom’ in commercial TV channels at the offset of the transition, with its often-questionable quality, leading to the emergence of several serious contenders on the broadcasting scene, both in terms of their financial value and in terms of their power over public opinion.
