DICK STRAWBRIDGE Engineer-Inventor, Sustainability Expert, Motivational Speaker & TV Presenter Agent: Sophie Laurimore DICK STRAWBRIDGE Engineer-inventor, Sustainability Expert, Motivational Speaker & TV Presenter Agent: Sophie Laurimore Dick was born in Burma in September 1959, the third of seven children. He was raised and educated in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. In 1978 Dick joined the Army, and completed degree in Electrical Engineering. Over the next 20 years he rose from Troop Commander to Lieutenant Colonel, and enjoyed serving in the army (and playing rugby) all over the world. Dick's family persuaded him to audition for Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge. His leadership abilities, personality and engineering skills, (and possibly because he had the biggest moustache the series producers had ever seen) secured him the job. Dick was in all 10 series of the show - first as a team captain, then as a contestant and finally as a presenter. In 2001 Dick left the army and began a career in industry. He also ran leadership and teamwork courses, and began giving lectures to schools and colleges. He then went on to present Crafty Tricks of War, BBC 2. In this series, Dick celebrated British ingenuity and demonstrated his practical skills by reconstructing and testing some of the most unusual inventions of war. Following this Dick was part of the production, Geronimo, BBC 2, co-presenting with Ferne Cotton. Dick again demonstrated his extensive technical knowledge, as he challenged some of the great British public to build some of the craziest machines seen on television. In 2006 Dick and his family made a life changing move from The Malverns to Cornwall to a small holding that they restored and set about running sustainably. This ecological move was filmed and became the BBC 2 series, It’s Not Easy Being Green. In the 2nd and 3rd series Dick, and his son James, worked with members of the public on ecological projects across the UK. Dick then made The Re-Inventors, UKTV History, 2005 with his son James and Jim Milner. In each episode they reconstructed an invention of historic significance, with only a limited budget (£500), limited time, and limited facilities to construct a modern version and try it out against the real thing. From 2006 Dick has made regular contributions to the hit BBC 2 series Coast. Dick was invited, with his son James, to cook on the February 21st 2008 edition of 'Ready Steady Cook’; he cooked spotted dick and won! 2008 saw Dick teaming up with Jem Stansfield to present Planet Mechanics, National Geographic. They used their eco-engineering ingenuity to build Britain's first street-legal air-driven motorbike, a wood fueled truck and to power a farm using cow poo! In the summer of 2010 Dick took part in Celebrity Master Chef, BBC One and did phenomenally well, making it to the final with Christine Hamilton and Lisa Faulkner. Lisa won but Dick and Christine made their mark! In 2012 Dick then featured in the series, The Hungry Sailors which played out across 20 hours on ITV Daytime. It showed Dick and his son James back together on screen. Both equally self-sufficient, Dick and James set sail aboard pilot cutter the Amelie Rose to explore the food of Britain’s coastal towns. Mooring in tiny harbours and busy ports they met farmers, fishermen, producers and foragers, gathering fantastic local produce and heading back onboard to cook up a number of fabulous dishes in their galley kitchen. It was a coastal, culinary and critical triumph! Shortly after this, Dick presented Beat The Ancestors on Channel 5. This saw Dick challenge a team of modern-day engineers to rebuild some of history's most impressive machines. Later on in the year, Dick and James also co-wrote a series of books: Made at Home (Octopus, May 2012) In 2013 Dick presented, again with his son James, Saturday Farm on ITV where they invited viewers to taste life at Daylesford, one of the UK's largest organic farms. Many adventures later; Dirty Rotten Survival (2015 Nat Geo), The Great Flying Challenge (2016 BBC One) and The Biggest Little Railway in the World (2018 Channel 4), to name a few, Dick now presents, alongside his wife, Angel, Channel 4's Escape To The Chateau and Chateau DIY. Escape To The Chateau is now in its seventh series. In the time he has left, Dick writes, hosts conferences, gives talks on British innovation, leadership and teamwork, lectures at schools and colleges, and makes keynote and after dinner speeches. In the last year he has given talks to a range of clients including Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, The British Council, The National Trust, Siemens, and The RSPB. Researching Digital On Screen Graphics Executive Sum m ary Background In Spring 2010, the BBC commissioned independent market research company, Ipsos MediaCT to conduct research into what the general public, across the UK thought of Digital On Screen Graphics (DOGs) – the channel logos that are often in the corner of the TV screen. The research was conducted between 5th and 11th March, with a representative sample of 1,031 adults aged 15+. The research was conducted by interviewers in-home, using the Ipsos MORI Omnibus. The key findings from the research can be found below. Key Findings Do viewers notice DOGs? As one of our first questions we split our sample into random halves and showed both halves a typical image that they would see on TV. One was a very busy image, with a DOG present in the top left corner, the other image had much less going on, again with the DOG in the top left corner. We asked respondents what the first thing they noticed was, and then we asked what they second thing they noticed was. It was clear from the results that the DOGs did not tend to stand out on screen, with only 12% of those presented with the ‘less busy’ screen picking out the DOG (and even fewer, 7%, amongst those who saw the busy screen). Even when we had pointed out DOGs and talked to respondents specifically about them, 59% agreed that they ‘tend not to notice the logos’, with females and viewers over 55, the least likely to notice them according to our survey.

BBC Children’s news and first-run UK originations Statement on the BBC’s request to change its Operating Licence [] Redacted for publication BBC Children’s news and first-run UK originations – Welsh overview STATEMENT: Publication Date: 28 July 2020 Contents Section 1. Overview 1 2. Background 4 3. Our decisions on changes to the Operating Licence 7 Annex A1. Comparison of current and revised Operating Licence conditions 50 A2. Notice of Variation 56 A3. Equality impact assessment 59 1. Overview This document explains Ofcom’s final decisions following a request by the BBC to change its Operating Licence to allow it to meet its news and new content commitments for children by increasing its online provision. This follows a consultation setting out our provisional views, which we published in November 2019. Our research shows that children are increasingly consuming content online, while the reach of linear television on the TV set among children is continuing to decline.1 In April-May 2020, during lockdown, linear viewing saw a resurgence among children, but it is already falling again.2 Given these changes, the BBC must innovate and adapt its approach in order to stay relevant to its youngest audiences. In Ofcom’s most recent Annual Report on the BBC3, we said that the BBC needs to work harder to reach young people by making content that appeals to them and ensuring that it is readily available where they want it. If younger audiences don’t engage with the BBC, then public support for the licence fee could be eroded, which is a significant risk to the future sustainability of the BBC.

  • Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-Up and Substitution
BBC Scotland Competition Assessment Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-up and Substitution STATEMENT ANNEX Publication Date: 26 June 2018 BBC Scotland Competition Assessment – Final Determination Annex 2: Channel Take-up and Substitution A2. Channel Take-up and Substitution Introduction A2.1 In order to review the public value and assess the potential impact on fair and effective competition of the BBC’s proposal, we must first consider the audience that the new BBC Scotland channel is likely to attract. This Annex provides our assessment of the likely ’take- up’ of the BBC Scotland channel, i.e. the viewing hours the new channel is likely to attract in Scotland and the viewing share and audience reach it is likely to achieve.1 A2.2 The BBC’s proposal involves associated changes to existing BBC services, in particular BBC Two, BBC Four and CBBC HD in Scotland. We therefore also assess the effect on the viewing of BBC Two, BBC Four and CBBC in Scotland resulting from the BBC’s proposal. A2.3 We then identify the services most likely to be affected by the proposed new channel and the associated changes. We assess the potential audience substitution, including from existing BBC services and commercial services. A2.4 This Annex broadly reflects the assessment of take-up and substitution set out in our Consultation. Where relevant, we have set out the stakeholder views we received in response to our Consultation and how these, along with any further analysis, have influenced our assessment of take-up and substitution. In particular, we set out and respond to stakeholders’ views on: our take-up estimates for the new channel (paragraphs A2.104 to A2.135); and substitution from existing TV channels as a result of the BBC proposal (paragraphs A2.162 to A2.171).

On World Mental Health Awareness Day 2017 David took to Twitter and spoke publicly about his experiences for the first time. He was overwhelmed by the response, as over 35,000 people shared their own mental health battles and their support for those who have experienced psychosis. In the UK, psychosis will affect roughly one in 100 people. This film sees David piece together what happened to him. He has made the film to help himself and other people explore and understand the misconceptions around psychosis. David also meets people who are going through their own mental health crises, and spends time with the combined emergency NHS mental health and police teams in his hometown of Birmingham as they respond to 999 calls to treat people in distress.
