V O L U M E 2 | I S S U E 5 | M A Y 2 0 1 9 BBC TWO 16TH MAY AT 9PM DAVID HAREWOOD: PSYCHOSIS AND ME Thirty years ago, at age 23, David Harewood had a psychotic episode and was admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act. On World Mental Health Awareness Day 2017 David took to Twitter and spoke publicly about his experiences for the first time. He was overwhelmed by the response, as over 35,000 people shared their own mental health battles and their support for those who have experienced psychosis. In the UK, psychosis will affect roughly one in 100 people. This film sees David piece together what happened to him. He has made the film to help himself and other people explore and understand the misconceptions around psychosis. David also meets people who are going through their own mental health crises, and spends time with the combined emergency NHS mental health and police teams in his hometown of Birmingham as they respond to 999 calls to treat people in distress. He meets people who are living with psychosis and spends time with two inspirational young people from an Early Intervention drop-in group in Solihull. Unusually for the area I am originally from Brighton and have grown up here, which means I know the city well and what it has to offer. I personally love living so close to the sea and hope to always be close to the sea wherever I end up in my life. I came to the team in early 2016 from working for many years in the substance misuse service and facilitating the group programme. I have worked in healthcare in a range of different services for 20 years now and can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy what I do and in this role have been able to home in on all previous experience and utilise this going forward to support the individuals I see. I am in a different position to my lead practitioner colleagues and receive referrals from my colleagues to support their clients with identified needs in a time specified manner for example supporting individuals with structuring their time and developing interests which are meaningful and aid recovery. This way of working suits me very well as by nature I am a problem solver and pride myself on good organisational skills. I have endeavoured throughout my career to build on my experience and range of skills which is why I have found myself in a position of not only working in this STR role but have strings to my bow of having active involvement in the physical health agenda which involves supporting individuals with smoking cessation. I also have played an active role in the group programme and have taken a lead in the organisation of the programme. I am particularly proud of how as a team we have developed this with our service user involvement, which has given a new fresh set of ideas to our existing schedule. As a natural progression I have now commenced my training to become a qualified nurse, this is something I have always wanted to do however life unfortunately has got in the way as it normally does. But now is the time for me to listen to my own advice and take my experience and all that I have learnt to a new level and see what is around the corner for me. GROUPS We run regular groups each week… Out and About Wednesdays @ 14:00 Tennis Thursdays @ 12:00 If you’re interested and would like to receive text message invites, just ask your lead practitioner.
