  • Kesha's 'High Road' Is a “Defiant Reclamation of Lightness”
Kesha’s ‘High Road’ Is a “Defiant Reclamation of Lightness” New Album OUT TODAY via Kemosabe/RCA Records LISTEN HERE Today, Kesha drops her new album ‘High Road’ (Kemosabe/RCA Records), reclaiming her throne as “the badass of pop” (Billboard). A delicious mix of debaucherous odes to living life to the fullest, reflections on self-love, and folk-tinged moments embracing all that makes us human, ‘High Road’ is the GRAMMY-nominated popstar’s most eclectic collection to date. Whether discussing topics of self-identity, free love, best friendship, heartbreak or childhood longing, ‘High Road’ expertly encompasses Kesha’s knack for heartfelt vulnerability, her wild child energy, and oddball sense of humor all with major modern pop integrity. It’s an album about not taking life too seriously, but it is done seriously well. For 'High Road', Kesha enlisted a diverse roster of collaborators / songwriters / producers including John Hill, Dan Reynolds, Stuart Crichton, Jeff Bhasker, Drew Pearson, Brian Wilson, Sturgill Simpson, Nate Ruess, Justin Tranter, Stint, Wrabel, and Pebe Sebert among others to help her make this celebratory chapter of her career a reality. Today’s album release follows last night’s incredible performance of “Resentment” on The Late Late Show with James Corden, and the recent announcement of her forthcoming North American spring tour. ‘High Road’ has already delighted critics, with Stereogum saying it “strikes a believable balance between vulnerability and the bluster she made her name on,” The Independent praising it as “a mature and defiant reclamation of lightness,” and AllMusic calling it “a heady good time”. Album standout tracks like “Tonight” (“100 percent your new night-out anthem” – MTV), “Father Daughter Dance” (“a crushing vocal showcase that no one could have expected” – American Songwriter), “Raising Hell” (feat.

  • SURF MUSIC by Geoffrey Himes
SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.

  • Kesha Launches Into Release Week with “Tonight”
Kesha Launches Into Release Week With “Tonight” New Album ‘High Road’ Out This Friday (1.31) Performance on The Late Late Show with James Corden this Thursday It’s an exciting week for Kesha and her fans, a week that includes today’s release of “Tonight”, her much-anticipated latest track off of her fourth album ‘High Road’ (Kemosabe/RCA Records) which is dropping this Friday (1.31). Kesha is also set to hit the stage at The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform album cut "Resentment" this Thursday (1.30). Beginning with a few delicate bars of piano that lead into Kesha soulfully proclaiming that “tonight is the best night of our lives”, the new song undergoes a sudden morphing from heartfelt pop ballad into a dirty club-ready hip-hop ode to a wild night of throwing caution to the wind, living life to the fullest, losing your phone, and smuggling a bottle of wine in your purse. “Tonight” is a tantalizing merger of the inspiring heart found on her last album ‘Rainbow’ with the signature gritty IDGAF swagger from her early releases. The song is destined to become a celebratory anthem and is the perfect sampling of what’s to come when ‘High Road’ drops on Friday. LISTEN HERE Written by Kesha with Wrabel and Stint (w/ the lattermost producing the track), “Tonight” has become one of the most anticipated tracks off ‘High Road’ among Kesha’s social media following after it was featured in the ‘High Road’ album trailer and a portion was recorded on a fan-shot video at a live event in LA a few months back.

A lot is riding on this set - a deep dive into their catalogue spanning their 10-year history. It's a new dawn for "America's Band". After four years of chaos dogged by declining record sales, lawsuits, mental breakdowns and worst of ail - irrelevance, this is their moment. Kicking off their two hour set with a Tdriving, kinetic 'Heroes And Villains' the hairy, funky-looking group are pretty much unrecognisable as the "Surfîng Doris Days" left behind by the counterculture back in '67. Leader Brian Wilson is absent, barely seen in public since he abandoned his opus SMiLE and abdicated his post as genius-in- residence. His brothers Cari and Dennis are here to avenge him, leading the charge of their formidable live assault. Even the lanky, balding figure of Mr 'California Girls' himself Mike Love has the bearing of a hip guru in his robes and beads. The gig is a triumph. With a new, hipper label behind them and a united front surely it was time for "America's Band" to shine, with or without their leader. This is the story of how, out of adversity The Beach Boys made their last great albums. " I dont see why I should lie and say the time the grab-bag 20/20 came out in wife Suzanne. Dennis at least succeeded in everything is rosy when it's not." February '69, it was clear that Brian was suppressing the tapes of the recordings Twenty-Seventh May 1969, and Brian barely involved, beyond chastising Cari made with Manson and his entourage he'd Wilson is talking to NME.

CONTEMPORARY MEDICAL MISSIONS AND IATROGENIC VIOLENCE IN HONDURAS BY Laura S. Gilchrest ABSTRACT The goal of this dissertation is to assess the health and broader social effects of contemporary medical missions in Honduras. Though medical missions are a popular phenomenon that has garnered the attention of researchers across disciplines, existing literature has not provided a framework for evaluating how medical missions are filling gaps in local services, if at all. Nor does existing scholarship evaluate for potential or actual harms that may result from medical mission activities. I conducted participant observation among 11 medical missions and a Honduran health center in the Department of Colón on the northeastern coast of Honduras. This study considers the medical mission encounter through assessments of local health resources and consecutive medical mission clinics and interviews and participant observation with local healthcare workers, residents and mission volunteers. I demonstrate that contemporary medical missions are a revival of missionary medicine and the iatrogenic violence they engage in is directly related to the colonial roots of biomedical healing. I frame the mission encounter as a dialectic of self- and Other making and identify dominant discourses medical mission volunteers circulate to establish moral and intellectual authority and rationalize ongoing interventions, even when they are acknowledged to be ineffective. The mission organization and its volunteers engage in actions that are frequently misaligned with the needs, identified structural factors that complicate health and well-being, and the national priorities for improving access to healthcare identified by local healthcare providers and residents.
