  • The Tragedy of Big Cast Includes Winona Ryder, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves, Monica Bellucci and Maria Bello, but Critics Were Divided on This One
16 發光的城市 A R O U N D T O W N FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 2010 • TAIPEI TIMES FILM REVIEW OTHER RELEASES COMPILED BY Martin WILLiams The Private Lives of Pippa Lee Robin Wright Penn is Pippa Lee, a housewife in Connecticut whose psychological history and social milieu makes it to the big screen courtesy of Rebecca Miller (daughter of Arthur Miller), who adapted her own work and directed. Pippa is married to publisher Alan Arkin and has an interesting network of friends, family and associates, but there’s no shortage of dissatisfaction in her life. Flashbacks to Pippa as a young woman (played by Blake Lively from TV’s Gossip Girl) help explain why. The tragedy of Big cast includes Winona Ryder, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves, Monica Bellucci and Maria Bello, but critics were divided on this one. Couples Retreat Vince Vaughn and wife travel to lovely Bora Bora for therapy along with three other couples, genius but the program on offer by the local resort chief (Jean Reno) is not quite what they BY HO YI expect. American critics STAFF REPORTER liked the actors but retreated from the rest of the production, which — as with many mainstream US comedies these days — injects surprisingly crude material throughout in the hope of appearing lively, if not funny. Om Shanti Om Bollywood films never took off in Taiwan, and while this week’s release (under the mini-festival title “Bling! Bling! Bollywood!”) of two big-budget odes to the movie industry won’t change that, it will surely remind adventurous local audiences of the dynamism of India’s filmmakers.

  • George Chun Han Wang Portare Il Sorriso in Tempi Che Cambiano: Il Cinema Comico a Taiwan
Ufeff13_Libro_ITALIANO_Layout 1 12/04/2011 10:01 Pagina 361 ASIA RIDE!

Course Description As China reopened to the world and becomes the newly emerged superpower in the recent few decades, Chinese films and other aspects of screen media have not only attracted worldwide scholarly attentions and artistic interests, but also they have been embraced by a wide range of popular tastes internationally. This course will examine Chinese cinema in juxtaposition with popular culture and other forms of media such as television, music, journalism in a broad sociopolitical and historical context. While focusing specifically on film productions, cultural consumptions, and media representations in the contemporary era of mainland China, we will place these discourses within a general framework of national tradition and identity and track their evolutions from the beginning of the twentieth-century. We will look at these distinct yet interrelated phenomena from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective, by emphasizing the heterogeneous and hybrid nature of Chinese culture and media. An interdisciplinary approach (with the assistance of a wide diversity of readings and multimedia tools) will be incorporated into our discussions that are especially concerned with the concepts and configurations of urban modernity, youth subculture, popular literature and music, the interactions between Shanghai and Hollywood, and the narratives of food, sports, and fashion on screen and across other media.

  • Taiwan's Comedy Cinema
Ufeff13_Libro_INGLESE_Layout 1 12/04/2011 09:59 Pagina 161 ASIA LAUGHS! Taiwan George Chun Han Wang Bringing Laughter in Changing Times: Taiwan’s Comedy Cinema Since the Taiwanese New Cinema movement emerged three decades ago in the early 1980s, the world has enjoyed discovering cinematic gems made by Taiwan’s iconic auteurs such as Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Tsai Ming-liang and Ang Lee. Art-house films from Taiwan continue to generate international enthusiasm, but domestically, the island’s comedy cinema has often been brushed aside as being crude, inferior, unoriginal and short of intellectual merit. Although there may be some truth in these disputable generalizations, comedy cinema nevertheless has contin- ued to entertain the audience in Taiwan, earning heartfelt laughs and creating delightful memo- ries in good times and bad times. Throughout its complex history, Taiwan has had its share of difficult times. The Allied victory in the Pacific in 1945, ended five decades of colonial rule under Japan and Taiwan’s sovereignty was taken over by the Republic of China (ROC). Having bid farewell to one oppressive regime, people of the “treasure island” also known as Formosa, came under a new government con- trolled by Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Chinese Kuomingtang party (KMT). Discovering that this administration was also overbearing and corrupt, the local population rebelled. On February 28th 1947, an anti-government uprising was violently put down by the KMT, thousands were impris- oned and executed in this tragic event known as the 228 Incident, instigating the era of “White Terror.” When the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, KMT had lost control of mainland China to the Communists.
