This information packet is useful for answering your questions prior to embarking on the fishing adventure of a lifetime at Katmai Lodge Alaska.

Arrival Your personalized service begins the moment you step off the plane at Katmai when you are welcomed by your professional guide and our hospitable staff.

Tour and Orientation During a brief tour and orientation, staff will check you into rooms and issue fishing licenses.

Welcome Buffet Lunch Enjoy a hearty welcome brunch in the dining room before your day of fishing. Itinerary and Gear Your expert guide will provide an overview of daily activities and the needed gear for fishing the scenic Alagnak River. Ask your guide about fly-outs. The lodge-based 10-passenger turbine De Havilland Otter floatplane is available for fly-out fishing trips or bear viewing excursions to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. These trips can be arranged prior to, or upon your arrival at the lodge.

Social Happy Hour Exchange stories and bragging rights with guests during the complimentary happy hour offering appetizers, beer, wine, and soft drinks served in the main lodge between the hours of 5 - 7 p.m.

Meals Delicious meals are prepared daily and included throughout your stay at the lodge.  Breakfast is cooked to order and is served from 6-8 a.m. every morning.  Lunch. Typically enjoyed on the river. Your guide will ask what you prefer to eat the day prior.  Dinner. Relax at dinner time with a great selection from a buffet style dinner at 7 p.m. Wine is served with meals. If you prefer, a selection of well drinks is available for purchase. For preferred spirits we may not have in our bar selection, you are welcome to bring it with you on the trip. Water in Alaska is safe and delicious on tap. In addition, bottled water is offered to guests.

Departure Home On the last night of your stay, you will receive departure information and settle any charges. The lodge accepts cash, check, and most credit cards, including American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Plane Travel Information

Katmai Lodge is located 300 air miles southwest of Anchorage in the Bristol Bay drainage, on the Alagnak River, the only designated trophy fishing river in Alaska. The closest commercial airport is in the town of King Salmon, located 30 miles south of the lodge. We have our own air strip for easy access in and out of the lodge.

Lodge Accessible by Charter Katmai Lodge is not accessible by road, only by the lodge’s direct charter or transfer through King Salmon. Please read the information below for travel information.

IMPORTANT: Transfer days to and from the lodge are Saturdays and Wednesdays. Unscheduled transfer days can be arranged if necessary and subject to additional charges.

Scheduling your arrival to Anchorage When planning your trip to Katmai Lodge, schedule an arrival date to Anchorage for the night prior to your reservation date. For example, Katmai reservation date is August 10th, so arrive in Anchorage August 9th. In this Trip Planning Guide, you will find a list of Anchorage hotels with airport shuttle services.

Departing Katmai Lodge If you are departing Anchorage for home the same day you depart the lodge please schedule your flight out of Anchorage after 4 p.m. Weather (fog) delays are not uncommon in the area. This will avoid the chance of missing your connection home. **There is no fishing on the day of your departure. **

Direct Charter from Anchorage On most Saturdays and Wednesdays, the lodge offers convenient direct charters from Anchorage to and from the lodge.

Chartered services typically depart Anchorage between 9 - 10 a.m. If charter flights are not available, you will be routed to King Salmon airport (via a commercial airline) where you will be met for transfer to the lodge.

Flights from King Salmon If you prefer to make your own flight reservations through King Salmon, or other direct charter, please notify Katmai reservations at 1-800-330-0326 prior to booking your flight to help prevent delays. Should you prefer to travel this way, please schedule flights into King Salmon arriving at or before 10a.m. On your day of departure, schedule your flight out of King Salmon after 12pm.

We apologize in advance should there be a wait time at King Salmon Airport when transferring to and from the lodge. The lodge tries to keep the wait to a minimum; however, we combine arrival and departure times into one flight to and from the lodge. Outside the times of 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., you may incur extra charges.

Clothing Suggestions Dressing in layers is recommended as weather extremes can be expected. The following list may serve as a guideline.

Packing for the Trip ☐ Keep total luggage weight to 50lbs or less, including carry-on and checked bags. This works well with airline regulations as well as with the charter and lodge aircraft. ☐ If you check your bag, pack a second set of clothing, medications and toiletries in a carry-on bag, in case of lost luggage. Katmai Lodge is in a remote area, it’s always better to be prepared. ☐ Pack all travel documents.

Fishing Gear The lodge furnishes all rods (fly, spin, and spey), reels, lures, and tackle. If you prefer to use your own equipment, please feel free to bring it.

Katmai Lodge has waders and boots available for usage at no additional cost to guests. Guests are welcome to use their own. Please note that felt soled boots are banned in Alaska.

Should you wish to use Katmai Lodge’s equipment during your stay, please specify size and preferences on your guest registration.

Chum and Silver Salmon 12.5' to 14' 8 or 9 weight rods. Floating line that fits the rod. Skagit heads work best to cast a heavy fly.

Flies The lodge will furnish all flies. We have a fully stocked fly-tying area for guests in the main lodge with materials that are commonly used in creating patterns used in Alaska. You are welcome to bring some of your own personal flies to try as well.

Taking Fish Home

We know most of our guests like to take salmon home. In late June and July, you may take one 50lb. fish box which can include 1 adult male King, plus Sockeye, Chum or Pinks (even year runs). Beginning August 1, your 50lb. box can include Chum, Pinks (even year runs) and Silvers.

The Alagnak River system is in the only designated trophy trout fishery in Alaska. It and all other areas where we fish are single hook, no bait or scent. Rainbow Trout are all catch and release. We practice strict catch and release on all other native stream fish as well i.e.: Grayling, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden.

With these policies and by promoting catch and release, we can help ensure that salmon runs along the Alagnak River continue to remain strong. Fish fillets are vacuum sealed, frozen and packed in airline approved waxed boxes.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE AND EXPERIENCE The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a premier cultural center sharing the rich heritage of Alaska's 11 major cultural groups. Visitors experience Alaska native culture first-hand through engaging storytelling, authentic native song and dance, artist demonstrations, native games demonstrations and more. Unique opportunities to interact and participate create an enlightening educational experience for young and old alike.

Inside The Gathering Place is center stage for Alaska Native dancing, compelling Native games demonstrations and intriguing storytelling.

The Hall of Cultures features exhibits and demonstrating Alaska Native artists. Visitors discover more about each of the five major culture groups through engaging exhibits. Alaska Native craft activities will keep the children entertained.

The Theatre hosts a variety of movies all day, including the Heritage Center produced film, “Stories Given, Stories Shared;” This introductory film offers an opportunity to learn about the many different cultures of Alaska Native people, its beautiful landscape and climates all highlighted from each of the regions in Alaska.

Outside Guests stroll through six authentic life-sized Native dwellings situated in a wooded area around beautiful Lake Tiulana and are introduced to the traditional life ways of the Athabascan, Inupiaq/St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Yup'ik/Cup'ik, Aleut, Alutiiq, and the Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples. Each village site has a traditional structure along with artifacts that each group used in their daily lives. Make sure to see the whale bones at the Inupiaq site; a favorite spot for picture-taking. Visit with the culture representatives in each village site. Guided village site tours are at 10:15, 12:15, 2:00 and 3:30.

Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum

The Alaska Aviation Museum is in the heart of Alaska aviation. It sits on the south shore of Lake Hood, the busiest seaplane base in the world, with more than 87,000 takeoffs and landings per year. A half-mile away is Ted Stevens International Airport, the air crossroads of the world. You can watch takeoffs and landings right from the museum.

The museum presents one of the finest displays of Alaskan aviation history with many interactive displays, memorabilia, photographs, films and artifacts from personal collections of Alaska's pioneer aviators.

Anchorage Museum of Art

The Anchorage Museum is one of the must-see attractions. The mission of the museum is to collect, preserve exhibit and interpret the art, history and science of Alaska in relation to the circumpolar North. Cultural exhibits from prehistoric to present. Gift shop and café.

Alaska Heritage Museum

Located in the Wells Fargo building, The Alaska Heritage Museum is the largest private collection of its kind in Alaska. In addition to a large collection of Alaskan Native artifacts, and fine art by Alaskan artists, the museum highlights Wells Fargo history in the Alaskan Gold Rush era, with a two-thirds-scale stagecoach.

Earthquake Park

Earthquake Park is a local Anchorage Municipal Park that came into existence as the result of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake when Anchorage and surrounding areas was rocked by this 9.2 magnitude quake. The Cook Inlet bluffs surrounding this park was lifted and sunk in excess of 30 feet during this time and destroyed much of the area.

Today, the park carries monuments and reader boards filled with much information about this quake and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trails winds its way throughout. By park standards it may not seem like much, but it is a great place to learn about Anchorage's history. The park also offers beautiful views of the Anchorage city skyline nestled below the Chugach range.

Directions: Take West Northern Lights to Aircraft Dr. Park at pullout. The monument is along the trail looking out over the water.

Ride the Scenic Rails of the Alaska Railroad to Historic Seward

Settled at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward is one of Alaska’s oldest and most scenic communities. Discover the Alaska Sealife center, the downtown district filled with quaint shops and art galleries, and of course the boat harbor shared with humans and wildlife alike.

Easy Day Trips from Anchorage

Alaska SeaLife Center- 2 Hours South of Anchorage

Alaska's only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center is celebrating ten years on the shores of Resurrection Bay in Seward --- a scenic 2-hour drive south of Anchorage.

Visitors to this “window on the sea” have close encounters with puffins, octopus, sea lions and other sea life while peeking over the shoulders of ocean scientists studying Alaska's rich seas and diverse sea life.

Exhibits The many exhibits at the Alaska SeaLife Center immerse visitors in Alaskan marine ecosystems and provide opportunities to watch animals in naturalistic Habitats as well as research settings.

Transportation tips: There is a free shuttle offered by the Seward Chamber of Commerce during the summer season that has stops at the rail and cruise terminals.

Portage Glacier – 1 Hour South of Anchorage

Portage Lake was created behind the terminal moraine of Portage Glacier as it began receding. Burns Glacier, a hanging glacier, is visible in the middle distance; Portage Glacier is hidden behind the outcropping to the right of Burns Glacier.

Where is the Glacier? Portage Glacier may be hard to see but it's much easier to see where it has been. In the last few years the glacier face has begun retreating from the lake it created. A small section in the center has exposed bedrock but much of the glacier face is still in the water and extends down more than 100 feet into Portage Lake. Portage Glacier is still considered a valley glacier. Nearby are several “hanging glaciers” that is glaciers that come part way down a mountainside.

The first stop at Portage Glacier should be the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center, which contains several exhibits as well as a highly recommended film about glaciers: “Voices from the Ice.”

A walk along the shore of the lake to see icebergs up close may be the next stop. To see the glacier though, it's necessary to drive further along the lake to a sightseeing boat dock and buy a ticket for a cruise through the lake that takes visitors close to the glacier face.

Exit Glacier - 2 Hours South of Anchorage

About Exit Glacier Exit Glacier area is the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park accessible by road. Here you can walk right up to an active glacier, explore the trails and witness up- close how glaciers reshape the landscape.

A network of short trails leads to different views of Exit Glacier, beginning at the Exit Glacier Nature Center and the parking lot. There is a well-maintained trail to the Edge of the Glacier. This moderately strenuous trail brings you near a wall of blue ice providing the most dramatic close-up view of Exit Glacier.

The Exit Glacier Nature Center is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Hours: 9 a.m.-8 p.m. No Fee

Directions: Follow the Seward Highway (AK-1) south from Anchorage. It will become AK-9 around mile 35 (87 miles from Anchorage) with AK-1 heading to Homer and Kenai. Continue AK-9 to Seward. Turn right on to Herman Leirer Road, commonly called “Exit Glacier Road” at mile 3 of the Seward Highway - AK-9. Proceed 8.4 miles. The road will end at the parking lot for the nature center.

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - 1 hour south of Anchorage

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through conservation, public education, and quality animal care. AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals year-round and provides spacious enclosures and quality animal care.

Animals that cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. Come be a part of these exciting programs and watch these animals display their natural, “wild” behavior. Coyotes peer out from behind the brush while a bald eagle swoops in on the salmon remains left by a grizzly bear. Wood Bison plod through 65 acres of tidal flat terrain, as part of a program that will one day restore the species to the Alaska wilderness.

AWCC has provided care for hundreds of displaced animals because visitors have made critical contributions in the form of admission fees, donations, memberships, and gift shop purchases. AWCC encourages you to visit the center with your walking shoes and camera in hand for an educational Alaska experience to remember.

King Salmon Visitor Center

The interagency King Salmon Visitor Center

Located just next door to the King Salmon Airport, the King Salmon Visitor Center is open during the summer season.

Inside you can find detailed information about the many federal public lands on the Alaska Peninsula as well as the Bristol Bay region.

Exhibits focus on the spectacular natural resources and rich history of the Alaska Peninsula. A large collection of films is available for viewing and the bookstore offers maps, navigation charts, videos, posters and more. For more information, contact:
