At that point, I tried to place them in an order that would reflect where the song takes place in the different stages of a relationship: no relationship, starting a relationship, building trust/rising stakes, breaking up, and coping with separation. This works well as many of Shikao Suga's songs hint at a seed of self-destruction even in the songs that belong to the early stages, so the "foreshadowing" is good (though it is probable that the songs are not about the same couple). "Adayume" is about someone very likely to become hikikomori, a social recluse, struggling to resist his social anxiety and paranoia. The number of hikikomori in Japan and other Asian countries is on the rise and is considered a significant social problem. "Ringo Juice" is either about a yandere (ax-crazy) girlfriend or about a controlling boyfriend characterizing his girlfriend as such. Both of these characters are types that seem to prey on the fears of public consciousness. "Thank You" appears to be about someone intent on climbing the social ladder, either at work or as a politician. It is possible for a living person to be declared a god, or kami, like the emperor, Thomas Edison, or Osamu Tezuka, though it is unusual. There seems to be a risk that others will sacrifice him or he will sacrifice others so that this can happen. xxxHolic intro songs: "Juukyuu-sai" (Season 1 anime), "Nobody Knows" (Season 2 anime), "Sanagi" (xxxHolic: A Midsummer Night's Dream), "Sofa," (xxxHolic Shunmuki) "Kazanagi" (xxxHolic Rou), "Adayume" (xxxHolic Rou Adayume), "Aitai" (drama) A high school boy works for a witch who runs a wishing shop, and ends up taking it over when she disappears, having been dead all along, so that he can wait for her to come back. Honey and Clover insert songs: "Hachigatsu no Serenade" (Ep. 2), "Tsuki to Knife" (Ep. 3), "Sorosoro Ikanakucha" (Ep. 7), "Ougon no Tsuki" (Ep. 19), "Natsukage" (Ep. 31), "Ringo Juice" (Ep. 32), "Kazanagi" (Ep. 33) Art students doing art school, trying to find jobs, and falling in love. Not quite a love dodecahedron (there are two love quadrangles), but it's complicated. 2 "Adayume” or "Vengeful Dream" Heya no naka jitto uzukumatte Locked in your room, jittery and scared stiff— Kurayami ni me wo korashiteiru to straining your eyes in the darkness so— Tonari no heya de dareka ga hora Look, someone from next door over Kimi wo nozoiteiru has been peeking at you! A billion animals have been caught in the fires, with some species now pushed to the brink of extinction. Skies are reddened from air heavy with smoke— smoke which can be seen 2,000km away in New Zealand and even from Chile, South America, which is more than 11,000km away. • "Grammaticality Judgment"
Prosodic Influence on Syntactic Judgments * Yoshihisa Kitagawa and Janet Dean Fodor Indiana University Graduate Center, CUNY We argue for the importance of controlling prosody in soliciting syntactic judgments. Through the analyses of a variety of complex Wh-constructions in Japanese, we first attempt to reveal that a construction which requires a non-default prosody is vulnerable to misjudgments of syntactic well- formedness when it is presented to the subjects in writing. We then report on our pilot experiments on the comparison of grammaticality judgments of written and spoken sentences in both English and Japanese, which supports our claim. Keywords: implicit prosody, default prosody, parsing, Wh-questions in Japanese, long-distance scrambling, 1. Introduction It appears that there is a rebellion in the making, against the intuitive judgments of syntacticians as a privileged database for the development of syntactic theory. Such intuitions may be deemed inadequate because they are not sufficiently representative of the language community at large. The judgments are generally few and not statistically validated, and they are made by sophisticated people who are not at all typical users of the language. Linguists are attuned to subtle syntactic distinctions, about which they have theories. However, our concern in this paper is with the opposite problem: that even the most sophisticated judges may occasionally miss a theoretically significant fact about well- formedness. In the 1970‟s it was observed that in order to make a judgment of syntactic well- formedness one must sometimes be creative. It was noted that some sentences, such as (1), are perfectly acceptable in a suitable discourse context, and completely unacceptable otherwise (e.g., as the initial sentence of a conversation; see Morgan (1973).

FOXFIRE: THE SELECTED POEMS OF YOSA BUSON A TRANSLATION By Allan Persinger A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2013 ABSTRACT FOXFIRE: THE SELECTED POEMS OF YOSA BUSON A TRANSLATION By Allan Persinger The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Kimberly M. Blaeser My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 – 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and mov- ing writer.

Wilson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2015 During the mid-1950s to the early 1970s a subversive cinema, known as the Japanese New Wave, arose in Japan. This dissertation challenges critical trends that use French New Wave cinema and the oeuvre of Oshima Nagisa as templates to construct Japanese New Wave cinema as largely male-centered and avant-garde in its formal aesthetics. I argue instead for the centrality of the erotic woman to a questioning of national and postwar identity in Japan, and for the importance of popular cinema to an understanding of this New Wave movement. In short, this study aims to break new ground in Japanese New Wave scholarship by focusing on issues of gender and popular aesthetics.

  • Detecting Japanese Vernacular Modernism: Shinseinen Magazine and the Development of the Tantei Shôsetsu Genre, 1920-1931
DETECTING JAPANESE VERNACULAR MODERNISM: SHINSEINEN MAGAZINE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TANTEI SHÔSETSU GENRE, 1920-1931 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kyoko Omori * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor William J. Tyler, Adviser Approved by Professor Richard Torrance Professor Mark Bender Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT The post-war discourse on modern Japanese literature has presented the binary opposition between “pure” versus “popular” literature as a historical fact, configuring popular literature as the disposable “other” of “pure” literature. Consequently, Japanese literary studies have paid relatively little attention to popular forms such as mystery fiction, samurai “period” fiction, the romance novel, and “nansensu” humor. This dissertation examines the discursive formation of the Japanese modernist popular genre known as “tantei shôsetsu” or “detective fiction.” Focusing on the popular monthly magazine Shinseinen and several of its writers, it discusses the theoretical and practical dimensions of “tantei shôsetsu” as a vernacular form of modernist literary production. In doing so, it situates the genre within contemporaneous debates about the meaning of both modernity and literature in Japan during the 1920s. Chapter One establishes the theoretical terms for “vernacular modernism” by illuminating the ways in which popular literary production engaged with the forces of commercialism and Westernization that also shaped the development of canonical Japanese literature during the early twentieth century. Chapter Two surveys established critical views of Modernism in Japan and shows that they fail to account for the significance of vernacular expression.
