  • Amphibians and Reptiles of the Mediterranean Basin
Chapter 9 Amphibians and Reptiles of the Mediterranean Basin Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Additional information is available at the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.70357 Abstract The Mediterranean basin is one of the most geologically, biologically, and culturally complex region and the only case of a large sea surrounded by three continents. The chapter is focused on a diversity of Mediterranean amphibians and reptiles, discussing major threats to the species and its conservation status. There are 117 amphibians, of which 80 (68%) are endemic and 398 reptiles, of which 216 (54%) are endemic distributed throughout the Basin. While the species diversity increases in the north and west for amphibians, the reptile diversity increases from north to south and from west to east direction. Amphibians are almost twice as threatened (29%) as reptiles (14%). Habitat loss and degradation, pollution, invasive/alien species, unsustainable use, and persecution are major threats to the species. The important conservation actions should be directed to sustainable management measures and legal protection of endangered species and their habitats, all for the future of Mediterranean biodiversity. Keywords: amphibians, conservation, Mediterranean basin, reptiles, threatened species 1. Introduction The Mediterranean basin is one of the most geologically, biologically, and culturally complex region and the only case of a large sea surrounded by Europe, Asia and Africa. The Basin was shaped by the collision of the northward-moving African-Arabian continental plate with the Eurasian continental plate which occurred on a wide range of scales and time in the course of the past 250 mya [1].

The last species list of the European herpetofauna was published by Speybroeck, Beukema and Crochet (2010). In the meantime, ongoing research led to numerous taxonomic changes, including the discovery of new species-level lineages as well as reclassifications at genus level, requiring significant changes to this list. As of 2019, a new Taxonomic Committee was established as an official entity within the European Herpetological Society, Societas Europaea Herpetologica (SEH). Twelve members from nine European countries reviewed, discussed and voted on recent taxonomic research on a case-by-case basis. Accepted changes led to critical compilation of a new species list, which is hereby presented and discussed. According to our list, 301 species (95 amphibians, 15 chelonians, including six species of sea turtles, and 191 squamates) occur within our expanded geographical definition of Europe. The list includes 14 non-native species (three amphibians, one chelonian, and ten squamates). Keywords: Amphibia, amphibians, Europe, reptiles, Reptilia, taxonomy, updated species list.

In this study, we evaluated the occupancy patterns and niche segregation of five species of lacertids, focusing on large-bodied species (i.e., adults having >75 mm snout-vent length) that occur in south-western Europe (Italian to the Iberian Peninsula). We characterized the niches occupied by these species based on climate and vegetation cover properties. We expected some commonality among phylogenetically related species, but also patterns of habitat segregation mitigating competition between ecologically equivalent species. We used multivariate ordination and probabilistic methods to describe the occupancy patterns and evaluated niche evolution through phylogenetic analyses. Our results showed climate niche partitioning, but with a wide overlap in transitional zones, where segregation is maintained by species-specific responses to the vegetation cover. The analyses also showed that phylogenetically related species tend to share large parts of their habitat niches. The occurrence of independent evolutionary lineages contributed to the regional species richness favored by a long history of niche divergence. Citation: Escoriza, D.; Amat, F. Morphological and molecular analysis showed that this new morph is different from the common species of ocellated lizard (Timon lepidus) on the Iberian peninsula in body size, sexual size dimorphism and cytochrome b haplotype. DNA sequencing revealed a unique and highly divergent cytochrome b haplotype indicating a long-term separation from other species of ocellated lizards. Evolutionary mechanisms that may have contributed to the formation of the small sized morph are discussed. The results presented in this paper suggest that this new morph is likely to be recognized as a full species in the near future. • Supplementary Information Environmental Temperatures Shape
Supplementary Information Environmental temperatures shape thermal physiology as well as diversification and genome-wide substitution rates in lizards Garcia-Porta, Irisarri, et al. Supplementary methods Phylogenomic data set assembly This study is mainly based on two new phylogenomic data sets (RNAseq and AHE), for which we especially selected lacertid species to represent the major clades of Lacertini that so far have evaded reliable phylogenetic reconstruction. As these two data sets contained different selections of taxa, they were first analyzed separately. To create a taxonomically more comprehensive tree for downstream analyses, both phylogenomic datasets were combined with five gene fragments commonly used in lacertid phylogenetics and available for a large number of species. The amphisbaenian, Blanus cinereus, known to represent the sister group of Lacertidae 1, was used as an outgroup in all phylogenetic analyses. The Anchored Hybrid Enrichment (AHE) method 2 was used to target 394 anonymous nuclear loci (of which 324 loci were retained for analysis). To generate the AHE data set, genomic DNA was extracted from fresh or ethanol-preserved tissue samples with a Qiagen DNeasy® Tissue Kit, DNA concentration measured with a Qubit® fluorometer, and samples with > 12 µg/ml selected for enrichment and sequencing in the Center for Anchored Phylogenomics at Florida State University (www.anchoredphylogeny.com), following previously outlined methods 2,3. Briefly, genomic DNA was sonicated to a fragment size of 200–800 bp and libraries prepared and indexed following the protocol of Meyer and Kircher 4 with minor modifications 2, using a Beckman-Coulter Biomek FXp liquid-handling robot. Following library preparation, libraries were pooled in equal quantities in batches of 16 libraries.
