How China fueled pain and Trump support (1.02/2) HANNIBAL, Ohio — Crushed by Chinese competition and feeling betrayed by mainstream politicians, workers in the hills of eastern Ohio are embracing Donald Trump and his tough talk on trade. For decades, they and others living across the Ohio River in West Virginia found work in coal mines and at a local aluminum plant — union jobs, with good pay and generous benefits. But those jobs are going, if not gone. Coal is being wiped out by stricter environmental rules and competition from cheap natural gas. The aluminum plant? It’s out of business, doomed by China’s domination of the global aluminum market. In an angry election year, some of America’s angriest voters live in places like Monroe County where local economies have been punished by price competition with China. Their frustration has fueled support for the Republican presidential nominee, with his belligerent rhetoric about the need to outsmart America’s economic rivals, tear up unfair trade deals and re-establish America as the world’s dominant player. “This is Trump country,” says John Saunders, an official with the United Steelworkers in nearby Martins Ferry, Ohio. The disaster that’s unfolded here isn’t obvious at first glance, not in a region known as the Switzerland of Ohio for its forested, rolling hills. In tiny Hannibal (population: 411), stately two-story homes overlook lawns that roll toward the banks of the Ohio. But the misery is real. Monroe County’s unemployment rate is Ohio’s highest at 10.2 percent. Families have moved out to find work. “You’re going to have to travel to find a job,” says Fran Poole, whose husband, Cecil, worked at the Ormet plant here for 37 years before being laid off when it closed. Some laid-off workers chose to retire early. Others found work in the energy business, only to see those jobs melt away, too, as oil and gas prices fell. Some are doing odd jobs — cutting grass, hauling gravel. READ: Trump blasts China for trade, currency actions Much of the damage to this region can be traced to China’s decision to become self-sufficient in aluminum production. Aluminum is used in construction and auto manufacturing, aerospace and consumer-product packaging. The surge in its production reflected a broader Chinese strategy: pour money into manufacturing to add jobs and accelerate economic growth. Fueled by government subsidies and cheap loans from state-owned banks, Chinese aluminum producers went into overdrive: In 2000, the had produced a world-beating 15 percent of all aluminum, China just 11 percent. By 2015, China had escalated its output nearly 1,200 percent — and held 55 percent of the world’s share. As Chinese aluminum flooded the world, prices collapsed. US production has tumbled 56 percent since 2000, according to the US Geological Survey. And America’s share of world aluminum is below 3 percent. Since 2011, US aluminum companies have closed or idled nine of the 14 US smelters. Two surviving plants are running at half capacity or less. Longtime residents recall how vital the Ormet plant here was for the area’s economy and for supporting middle-class lifestyles. Workers regularly vacationed and bought houses and boats and all-terrain vehicles to tear up the Ohio countryside. “If you didn’t go to college or the military, you went to the coal mines or Ormet,” says Bill Long, a former Ormet laborer who is a supervisor at the county’s Department of Job and Family Services. The factory drew workers from the hills of West Virginia and eastern Ohio, paying them about $40,000 a year before overtime. Overtime was “sporadic,” recalls Carl Davis, a former Ormet worker who is now a Monroe County commissioner. “But a few were known to gross around $100,000.” “Even though the work was hard back then, it was best job I had ever had, and the most money I’d ever had my hands on,” says Francis Blackstone, a 70-year-old Ormet retiree. “And the benefits were just unheard of” — including free health care. Through most of the 2000s — aside from a sharp drop during the Great Recession — world aluminum prices had withstood the surge in supply from China. China’s own economy was growing so fast its demand for aluminum was nearly insatiable. Then its economy decelerated after 2010, and aluminum prices plunged. Desperate, Ormet and the Steelworkers union sought to renegotiate electricity prices from the local utility, Appalachian Power. In 2012 and 2013, they urged Gov. John Kasich to lean on the state utility commission to help. Kasich wouldn’t intervene, leaving the decision to the commission. The plant went out of business. Aluminum prices were so low the plant might not have survived anyway. But Kasich’s refusal to intervene helps explains why animosity for the governor runs high in these parts. In the March Republican presidential primary, Monroe County overwhelmingly backed Trump and rejected Kasich, who otherwise won his home state handily. Trump is viewed as a champion to many here who say America’s political leaders have stood by while competition from China and other countries has wrecked communities like Hannibal. “He says what a lot of people would like to say,” says Cecil Poole.

Authorities in Rhode Island Search for Suspected Cop Killer (1.02/2) Authorities in Rhode Island are searching for a fugitive wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer in North Carolina. A state police tactical team raided a home in South Providence just before 9 p.m. Tuesday in hopes of finding 23-year-old Irving Fenner. Maj. Joseph Philbin says the suspect was not at the home. His half-sister was reportedly taken into custody. Fenner is accused of shooting 38-year-old Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby Police Department in the North Carolina city on Saturday. Brackeen, who was found shot in the chest, died on Monday. It's unclear how authorities came to believe Fenner is currently in Rhode Island. He's considered armed and dangerous.

Democrats call for probe of Trump check to Florida AG (1.02/2) WASHINGTON — House Democrats called Tuesday for a federal criminal investigation into an improper $25,000 donation Donald Trump’s charity made to a political group supporting Florida’s attorney general after her office said it was weighing legal action against Trump University. The call for a federal investigation came the same day that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman disclosed that his office has been investigating Trump’s charity to determine whether it has abided by state laws governing nonprofits. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show Schneiderman’s scrutiny of The Donald J. Trump Foundation dates back to at least June, when his office formally questioned the donation made by the charity to a group supporting Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. The AP first reported in June that Bondi personally solicited the money during a 2013 phone call that came after her office received complaints from former students claiming they were scammed by Trump’s namesake get-rich-quick real estate seminars. The Trump Foundation check arrived just days after Bondi’s office told a newspaper it was reviewing a lawsuit against Trump University filed by Schneiderman. Bondi’s office never sued Trump, though she denies his donation played any role in that decision. The Republican presidential nominee later paid a $2,500 fine over the check from his foundation because it violated federal law barring charities from making political contributions. In a letter that all 16 Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee sent Tuesday to U. S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, ranking member John Conyers of Michigan said federal investigators should determine whether the 2013 donation and Bondi’s decision not to join the New York lawsuit violated federal bribery or tax laws. “This fact pattern indicates that these payments may have influenced Mrs. Bondi’s official decision not to participate in litigation against Mr. Trump,” Conyers wrote, specifically citing the reporting of AP and others. “A number of criminal statutes would appear to be implicated by this course of conduct.” Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr confirmed receipt of the letter Tuesday but declined to comment on it. Bondi has endorsed Trump’s presidential bid and has appeared with him this year on the campaign trail. She has said the timing of Trump’s donation was coincidental and that she wasn’t personally aware of the consumer complaints her office had received about Trump University and the Trump Institute, a separate Florida business that licensed the Trump name and curriculum. Neither company was still offering seminars by the time Bondi took office in 2011, though dissatisfied former customers were still seeking promised refunds. Trump’s spokeswoman Hope Hicks confirmed to AP that Trump and Bondi spoke before his charity donated to a group supporting her candidacy, but she says they didn’t discuss any potential lawsuit. Neither Trump’s or Bondi’s spokespeople has responded to questions about what the two did discuss, or provided the exact date of the call. Trump has boasted in the past that he expects and receives favors from politicians to whom he gives money. “When I want something I get it,” Trump said at an Iowa rally in January. “When I call, they kiss my ass. It’s true.” In an interview Tuesday on CNN, Schneiderman, a Democrat who has endorsed Hillary Clinton, said his office has been looking into the Trump Foundation to determine whether it has complied with New York laws governing nonprofits. “We have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety from that point of view,” Schneiderman told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “And we’ve inquired into it, and we’ve had correspondence with them. I didn’t make a big deal out of it or hold a press conference, but we have been looking into the Trump Foundation to make sure it’s complying with the laws that govern charities in New York,” Schneiderman said. Late Tuesday, Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller dismissed Schneiderman’s inquiry as politically motivated. “Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is a partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years and has endorsed Hillary Clinton for President,” Miller said in a written statement. Trump’s campaign has said the improper foundation check to support Bondi’s re-election was the result of a series of clerical errors, and that the billionaire businessman had intended to support Bondi with personal funds. The Trump Foundation on its 2013 tax return then incorrectly reported that the $25,000 was paid not to the pro-Bondi political group, but to a similarly named charity in Kansas that got no Trump money. The Washington Post first reported that Trump’s charity paid an IRS penalty of $2,500 earlier this year, following media reports about the impermissible 2013 donation. Trump’s foundation, which for years has been funded by money the billionaire businessman raises from others rather than his own cash, has come under increasing scrutiny following reports by the Post, AP and others. In May, the Post reported that most of the $6 million Trump said he raised for veterans groups at a highly publicized January event wasn’t distributed until the newspaper began asking questions. After his campaign released a list of groups receiving about $5.6 million, about half of the 30 reached by AP said they’d received checks around the time of Trump’s May 24 Post interview. In an extensive review earlier this month, the Post found four charities that said they never received money even though the Trump Foundation reported making donations to them. A New Yorker, Trump owns a Florida home as well as resorts and golf courses in the state. Records show he has made $253,500 in political donations there since 1999, most of it going to Republican candidates, the state party or GOP committees. His daughter, Ivanka Trump, gave a $500 personal check to Bondi a week before her father’s charity money came in, as well as another $25,000 to the Republican Party of Florida the following year. Donald Trump also hosted a March 2014 fundraiser for Bondi on the lawn of his palatial Mar-a-Lago Club. Attendees were asked to give the $3,000 maximum individual donation allowed under state law. Records show that Bondi’s re-election campaign received 24 checks totaling $57,000 on the date of the Trump fundraiser. Justice for All, the political committee supporting Bondi, also took in $30,000 that day.

Gazebo Where 12-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot to Be Disassembled (1.02/2) The gazebo where a 12-year-old boy was fatally shot by a Cleveland police officer is scheduled to be disassembled. A Chicago arts organization is planning to display the gazebo where Tamir Rice was killed while playing with a pellet gun in November 2014. A spokesman for the Stony Island Arts Bank says the shingles will be removed on Wednesday, with work continuing into next week. The gazebo has become a symbol for a protest movement over the killings of black men by police. The Tamir Rice Foundation, which received ownership of the gazebo from the city of Cleveland, is finalizing an agreement to loan the structure to the arts organization. Two Cleveland-area companies have agreed to take it down for free.

Nation's Oldest Lighthouse Celebrates 300 Years (1.02/2) The nation's oldest lighthouse station is turning 300 years old with celebrations and a ceremonial re-lighting. Boston Light sits on a small island roughly 9 miles (14 kilometers) from downtown Boston. Coast Guard Commandant Paul Zukunft and Boston Mayor Martin Walsh are among the dignitaries expected to attend a Wednesday morning celebration in downtown Boston. The Coast Guard band is slated to perform. A smaller celebration is happening on Little Brewster Island, where the lighthouse is located. The nearby community of Hull has festivities planned as well. At sunset, the light's beam will be briefly powered down and symbolically re- lit. The 89-foot tall lighthouse was built by the British in 1716, destroyed during the American Revolution and rebuilt by the U. S. in 1783. It's the Coast Guard's last manned lighthouse.

A Colombian General's Journey to Peace With Rebels (1.02/2) For 40 years, army Gen. Javier Florez battled the guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. Now his mission is to make sure thousands of the rebels are safe as they disarm and return to civilian life under a historic peace deal. It's an improbable journey that Florez says has forced him to alter his soldier's perspective as the country undergoes profound changes after more than five decades of conflict. "There are situations as a soldier that you don't understand," Florez told The Associated Press in an interview Monday, describing his shift from one of the FARC's most feared military adversaries to one of its most trusted government confidants. The transformation began when President Juan Manuel Santos two years ago asked Florez to give up his position as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, the armed forces' No. 2 position. He wanted the general to negotiate face-to-face with the FARC on how 6,000 guerrilla fighters would turn over their weapons and reintegrate into civilian life. The 59-year-old Florez said he sweated making his decision. At that point, peace negotiations were dragging into their third year and many in the U. S.-backed military questioned whether years of hard work driving the rebels to the edges of the jungles would be undone by a piece of paper. Between three coffees and a cigarette, or maybe three cigarettes and a coffee, Florez jokes, he thought about the political vortex into which he was plunging his family. "I thought they would call me a traitor, as in fact happened," he said, recalling the attacks on social media he suffered from retired officers and conservative opponents of Santos' peace effort. "I had to disarm my spirit, my soul and my heart and understand that Colombian society is very complex. " The sacrifice appears to have paid off. Last month, Santos and the FARC announced they had reached a deal to stop fighting. In the coming weeks, the accord will be signed at a ceremony and then voters are expected to ratify it in a nationwide referendum. The cease-fire component negotiated by Florez sets out a detailed protocol by which the FARC will mobilize its troops to 28 rural areas across Colombia and over six months gradually turn over their weapons to a United Nations-led mission of international observers. Key to the accord, Florez said, was guaranteeing the FARC will be treated with dignity and not as a surrendering force despite the widespread contempt many Colombians hold for the group over its past involvement in drug trafficking, kidnapping and bombing of civilian targets. That was something he struggled with the night before his first meeting in Cuba with a rebel known as Carlos Antonio Lozada, a warlord Florez had personally hunted years before as head of the military's elite Omega forces. He said two fellow generals who were on the government's negotiating team from the outset, former police chief Oscar Naranjo and former military chief Jorge Enrique Mora, gave him a last-minute pep talk that prepared him for what would become the toughest mission of his life. "They calmed me down, making me understand that I wasn't just representing the armed forces but something bigger: the Colombian people," Florez recalled. Over coffee breaks and leisurely walks at the convention center in Havana where talks took place, he began to understand that Lozada faced many of the same pressures from inside the FARC not to cede too much to the government. By the end, enough trust had been built up that Florez recently toured with Lozada a guerrilla camp where he would have been a trophy prisoner not long ago. Under the deal, both rebels and soldiers who committed abuses in the line of duty will have to confess their crimes to special peace tribunals or face up to 20 years in prison. That grates on some conservative critics, who say putting professional soldiers before the same courts that will judge rebels who systematically subverted the rule of law is a humiliation. But for Flores, military crimes such as the extrajudicial killings of potentially thousands of civilians represent only a small fraction of the conflict's horrors. He said it is only fitting that hundreds of soldiers already serving time or facing charges for such crimes receive the same benefits as FARC fighters. "We're not going to abandon these people," he said of those soldiers, attributing their crimes to the psychological damage from years of bloody conflict. "If we're going to forgive the terrorists, why aren't we going to forgive those who acted badly? " ——— Joshua Goodman is on Twitter: https://twitter.com/apjoshgoodman. 8 New York to open inquiry into Trump foundation (1.02/2) WASHINGTON—New York state’s top law enforcement official said Tuesday he has opened an investigation into the Donald J Trump Foundation, citing worries the Republican presidential nominee’s charity has been involved in “impropriety.” “My interest in this issue really is in my capacity as regulator of non-profits in New York state,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman told CNN. “We have been concerned that the Trump Foundation has engaged in impropriety from that point of view,” added Schneiderman, who has been at loggerheads with the bombastic billionaire for years over the Trump University real estate program, which he has called “straight up fraud.” READ: Clock ticking, Trump finds himself in an ever-deeper hole The Trump Foundation has faced a series of damaging stories, including by The Washington Post, which reported over the weekend that the White House candidate himself had not donated to his own charity since 2008. The Post also found other irregularities, including that Trump spent $20,000 of money that had been set aside for charitable purposes to purchase a six- foot (1.8-meter) painting of himself. And in another move, the foundation made an illegal $25,000 donation to a campaign group affiliated with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in 2013 as she was considering joining Schneiderman’s fraud case against Trump University. “We’ve inquired into it and we’ve had correspondence with them. I didn’t make a big deal out of it or hold a press conference,” Schneiderman said. “But we have been looking into the Trump Foundation to make sure it’s complying with the laws governing charities in New York.” Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee issued an open letter asking US Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate the donation to Bondi. “After receiving these funds, Mrs Bondi declined to further investigate Mr Trump’s business interests. This fact pattern indicates that these payments may have influenced Mrs Bondi’s official decision not to participate in litigation against Mr Trump,” the letter read. “A number of criminal statutes would appear to be implicated by this course of conduct.” Trump, in turn, has lashed out at Schneiderman personally for a lawsuit the state attorney general filed in 2013 against the real estate mogul over the now-defunct Trump University, calling him “Clockwork Eric.” New York Attorney General Opens Trump Foundation Inquiry article.wn.com 2016-09-14 11:10 Agence France newsinfo.inquirer.net

Homicide convict Pemberton guarded by Filipino soliders–Lorenzana (1.00/2) US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton, detained at Camp Aguinaldo , is guarded by Filipino soldiers and not US troops, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana assured lawmakers on Wednesday. Lorenzana made this assurance before the House of Representatives appropriations committee hearing the Department of National Defense’s proposed P178.2 billion budget for 2017. “Nasa loob ng Camp Aguinaldo ngayon. Nakakulong siya doon at siya ay ginagwardiyahan ng mga gwardya ng Bureau of Prison (Correction),” Lorenzana said when asked by Kabayan Rep. Harry Roqie, who was the lawyer who secured the homicide conviction of Pemberton for killing transgender Jennifer Laude in 2014. (He’s in Camp Aguinaldo now. He’s detained there and is being guarded by Bureau of Prison Correction guards.) Roque said he asked the question because the last time he heard when he was handling the case was that Pemberton was detained at the detention facility of the Joint US Military Assistance Group after his conviction by the Olongapo Regional Trial Court in December 2015. The murder charge was downgraded to homicide absent the aggravating circumstances of treachery and abuse of superior strength, after the jury found that Pemberton was under the influence of alcohol and that Laude did not disclose her gender from the US Marine when they had sex. After a night of drinking at a bar in Subic, Pemberton and Laude checked in at a motel. Pemberton shoved Laude’s head on the toilet where she drowned after Pemberton found out that Laude was a transgender. READ: Pemberton found guilty of homicide When Roque asked whether or not Pemberton’s detention facility in Camp Aguinaldo was airconditioned, Lorenzana said he had not yet visited the detention facility, even though this was located just beside his quarters. Lorenzana said Pemberton is being guarded by Filipino soldiers. Roque asked: “Will you allow the presence of US soldiers to guard him in his facility after he was convicted?” “No,” Lorenzana tersely answered. Pemberton’s conviction and a jail term of 10 years remain a contentious issue in the Philippines, which has an agreement with the United States about the visiting rights of American troops in the country. READ: Court cuts Pemberton jail time to 10 yrs While the Visiting Forces Agreement grants the Philippines jurisdiction over US troops who commit crimes in the country not linked to their official duties, the US has custody over the military official from commission of the offense until the completion of the judicial proceedings. The court committed Pemberton to serve his sentence at the AFP custodial center in line with a memorandum of agreement between the Philippine Commission on the Visiting Forces, the Bureau of Corrections, the Department of Justice and the Philippine National Police pertaining to Pemberton’s detention. The court earlier committed Pemberton to serve his sentence at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. 10 ConCourt ruling to end widespread abuse of attachment orders (1.00/2) The good news is that the ruling will end the widespread consumer abuse that’s been going on for years in the issuing of EAOs - popularly but incorrectly referred to as “garnishees”. It immediately rewrites sections of the Magistrates’ Court Act to bring them in line with the Constitution‚ in order to protect indebted consumers. From here on‚ an EAO may be only be issued with the authority of a magistrate‚ after making sure that is “just and equitable” and that the amount is appropriate. Last July‚ when Judge Siraj Desai declared‚ in the Western Cape High Court‚ that 15 low-earning Stellenbosch workers’ EAOs were “unlawful‚ invalid and of no force and effect”‚ it was hailed by some as a precedent which could effectively “cancel” many other employees’ EAOs across the country. At the heart of that matter was the fact that in most of the 15 workers’ cases‚ it was the clerk of the court‚ not the magistrate‚ who issued their EAOs without any evaluation of their ability to survive on their remaining salaries. And the judge accused the 13 credit providers and law firm Flemix & Associates‚ which had administered EAOs on their behalf‚ of deliberately using courts very far from the workers’ homes or workplaces‚ meaning it was almost impossible for them to attend court‚ thus compromising their right to protection by the law. “So everyone who has a garnishee order which is off jurisdiction or without judicial oversight now becomes illegal automatically‚” said Wendy Appelbaum‚ the workers’ employer and the driving force behind Stellenbosch University’s Legal Aid Clinic’s (LAC) legal challenge‚ immediately after the Desai order. That is not the case. On Tuesday‚ the LAC failed in its bid to have Constitutional Court confirm Desai’s High Court order that the EAO section of the Magistrates Court Act was invalid. But‚ in a victory for debtors‚ the court did rule that the wording of the act be immediately changed to make it consistent with the Constitution. However‚ it will only apply to future EAOs‚ not existing ones. The court also upheld Judge Desai’s ruling in regard to jurisdiction. Attorneys acting on behalf of credit providers may only apply for EAOs at magistrates’ courts where the debtor lives or works. Flemix and the Association of Debt Recovery Agents (Adra) opposed the application for confirmation in the Constitutional Court and sought leave from the Constitutional Court to appeal the High Court’s order in respect of jurisdiction. But their appeals were dismissed and they have been ordered to pay the applicants’ costs. Setback for debt bullies timeslive.co.za 2016-09-14 07:33 Wendy Knowler www.timeslive.co.za

Pune: Disabled doctor made to travel 125 kilometres to work (0.01/2) Dr Alaknanda Vaidya, who met with an accident in 2010 in Pune, injuring her spine and paralysing her from waist down, examines a patient in the Baramati hospital where she’s posted since 2015 It's been over a year that a Pune doctor — 90 per cent disabled — was posted at a hospital 125 kilometres away from her home, but her fight to get reallocated to the city is still going on. The disabled medical officer’s maid helps her get out of the car This is the story of 39-year-old Alaknanda Vaidya, who hails from Mumbai, but is settled in Sinhagad Road, Pune. She was posted as a medical officer (Grade A) gynaecologist and obstetrician at a sub-district hospital in Baramati on February 7, 2015. The gynaecologist-obstetrician with her 11-year-old daughter After her repeated pleas for a transfer fell on deaf ears, her father finally put up a petition on Change.org listing her grievances. And that ultimately got chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to take notice and assure her of his help, who tweeted yesterday, “Got your request, Dr Alaknanda Vaidya. Director, Health Services will be in touch with you. Needful for your transfer will be done by tomorrow. Pls inform which officer did not consider your request. Apologies for the inconvenience.” Family matters Vaidya had met with an accident in 2010 in Pune while travelling in an autorikshaw, which turned turtle, injuring her spine and paralysing her from waist down. The mother of an 11-year-old girl and a divorcee, she has been on a wheelchair since. “I had ranked 13th in the open category and first in Pune division for this post. I, however, accepted the Baramati posting reluctantly. Baramati to Pune is a five-hour drive, so I stay there during the week and go home to my daughter, who is with my parents, on the weekend,” said Vaidya. “I earn Rs 50,000 a month and nearly half of it was going in paying my driver and maid, as I need the latter 24x7. Now, I am managing to save a bit as I have learnt to drive. But then, I again had to shell out from my pocket to build a ramp to enter the house the government has provided me. “I am living for my daughter… but I am not able to be with her, attend PTA meetings in her school, watch her grow up… Neither can I bring her to Baramati with me. Over the last one year I have sent emails and letters to authorities concerned, including the PMO and CM... I have requested them to give me a transfer to Pune, to enable me to be with my daughter as well as help my maid be with her family too.” Living by the rule Vaidya said that as per a government rule a physically- challenged person can’t be posted further than 10 kilometres from his/her home, and that’s what her appeal to the CM on Change.org states. Her father Ram Goswai, a retired bank employee, said, “My daughter is not asking for any favours or sympathy; she’s just fighting for what’s already in the rule book.” Vaidya’s online petition, which was posted two days ago, has been signed by 84,063 people so far. When mid-day spoke to her maid Shobha Raut, she said, “Dr Vaidya makes sure she reaches the hospital around 9.30 am and stays till late evening. She is hardworking and an inspiration for me. I have been with her for two years now. I miss my family in Pune, but seeing the struggles and sacrifices she has had to make, I can’t leave her. I help her in all the work, right from bathing to dressing.” “Patients love her, she’s an inspiration for many women here. In spite of her disability, she never says no to any work,” said Dr Pradnya Nikam, Vaidya’s colleague. Despite repeated attempts additional chief secretary, Public Health and Family Welfare of Maharashtra, Sujata Saunik remained unavailable for comment.

6 wounded in shootings Tuesday across Chicago (0.01/2) At least six men were wounded in shootings Tuesday across Chicago. Most recently, a 25-year-old man was shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. He was walking about 10 p.m. in the 5200 block of West Kamerling when he heard gunshots and realized he’d been hit in the right leg and back, according to Chicago Police. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. About 6:40 p.m., two men, ages 25 and 30, were each shot in the leg in the 4800 block of West Patterson in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said. They were both taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized. Eight hours earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg about 10:30 a.m. in the 800 block of North Monticello in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. About 4:40 a.m., a man was shot in the Lake View neighborhood on the North Side. The 22-year-old was shot in the buttocks in the 1000 block of West Belmont, police said. He later walked into Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. Police said the man is a documented gang member and the shooting may have been a drive-by attack. 15 Veloso’s lawyers to Duterte: Please fight for our client CABANATUAN CITY – The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) urged President Duterte on Wednesday to fight for the freedom of their client, Mary Jane Veloso, who was convicted and condemned to death for smuggling 2.6 kilos of heroin into Indonesia in 2010. Instead of picturing Veloso as a drug convict, Mr. Duterte must see her as “a poor, young mother of two young boys whose vulnerability was taken advantage of and exploited for the criminal purpose of drug smuggling, [of] which she had no knowledge of doing,” said lawyer Edre Olalia, NUPL secretary general, in a statement. Olalia maintained that Veloso was innocent. “She is in truth not the criminal but the victim, the peddled and not the peddler not only of drug trafficking but also of trafficking in persons,” he said. Veloso’s execution had been postponed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, initially at the request of former president Benigno Aquino III in 2015, and again this year, to enable her to testify against her alleged recruiters, Ma. Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao. READ: Widodo sticks to Veloso account: Duterte’s message is clear The government has been prosecuting Sergio, Lacanilao and a certain “Ike” for qualified human trafficking before the Regional Trial Court in Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija. Lacanilao and Sergio have denied luring Veloso to Indonesia, where she was caught carrying narcotics. They have been detained at the Nueva Ecija provincial jail here. Olalia conceded that Veloso’s conviction, temporary reprieve and the appeal for clemency were “matters all within the ambit of Indonesian laws in the same way that the ongoing trial of cases against her recruiters and the plea for clemency are also matters in accordance with the Philippine laws.” Philippine lawyers, and the judge hearing the human trafficking case, are scheduled to fly to Indonesia to take Veloso’s deposition. READ: Duterte lets Jakarta decide Veloso case “As the leader of this nation and as the pater familias of all Filipinos, President Duterte is expected to rise to his bounden duty and fight for her, and fight hard as he does for all the victims of this transnational infection,” Olalia said. Among the injured were tourists from Britain, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Spain itself. The driver was also hurt, he added. Fifteen sustained light injuries, while six were said to be in moderate condition. 17 DOTr to open part of Naia expressway; free toll for a month MANILA, Philippines — Motorists may get some relief from the usual traffic headache en route the Manila airport as government opens the first phase of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway (Naiax) on Sept. 22, with the toll fee waived for a month. Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade bared the news at a hearing on the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) budget at the Senate on Wednesday, even acknowledging that the 7.6-km road project was started by the Aquino administration. “Phase 1 will open this month, I think on the 22nd, and the entire freeway connection up to (Naia) Terminal 3 will all be open before the end of this year. So that before the end of this year, all the flyovers will be open,” Tugade told the Senate committee on finance hearing chaired by Sen. Loren Legarda. The segment of the flyover that will open next week connects the Macapagal Boulevard to the Naia Terminals 1 and 2. “For the record, that wasn’t us. [It was the project of] the past administration. The past administration built it, we just finished it and will open it,” he said during the hearing Wednesday morning. Tugade also announced that motorists may use the flyovers for free for a month. Toll fee for Naiax’s first phase is pegged at P35 to P45. “I have spoken with the concessionaire. I’m not sure if it’s the time to announce it… the public will enjoy one month free, no toll fees when we open that,” said the official. “That’s not cheap. We computed it, it is a big sacrifice for our concessionaire,” said Tugade. Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri welcomed the news, citing how he had to bear a three-hour ride from the airport, which sits on the border of Pasay and Parañaque, to his home in Makati City after returning from a recent flight to Singapore. “I flew in from Singapore–it was a three-hour flight, and when I arrived in NAIA 3, it took me another three hours to go home to Makati. I could have just gone back to Singapore. I’m glad the Secretary said that. This administration also needs good news,” he said. READ: Traffic respite expected as Naia expressway segment opens in Sept. The 17.9-billion Naiax project is among the Aquino administration’s major public-private partnership ventures, which aims to decongest traffic on roads surrounding the busy airport complex, including the Macapagal Boulevard, the MIAA Road, and Andrews Avenue. The San Miguel Corp. conglomerate’s Vertex Tollways Development Inc. handles the project, with DM Consuji Inc. tapped as contractor. The airport flyover network is estimated to have a capacity of 80,000 per day. CDG

US-PH alliance will ‘endure and remain strong’—official MANILA, Philippines—The US-Philippines alliance will “endure and remain strong” because of the two countries’ long-standing relations and US President Barack Obama is “committed to work effectively” with the Philippines to advance the shared interests and concerns of the two countries in his last four months in office, a US official said Wednesday. “Let me say that the Philippines Foreign Minister and its defense ministry have issued statements… affirming the importance of the closeness of the alliance,” said Nina Hachigian, the US ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). READ: US committed to work with PH “We have a wide range of shared concerns and shared interests with the Philippines, and we’ve been able to work effectively together to advance those interests and Mr. Obama has committed to doing that in the four months remaining,” Hachigian said in a telephonic press conference with journalists. When asked about President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive that the Philippine military will not conduct any joint maritime patrols with its allies in the South China Sea, Hachigian referred the reporters to the US and Philippine defense departments for comment. However, she also said that “the new administration, we are currently beginning to have meetings and discuss our shared priorities and programs.” The US and Asean are set to have an informal meeting in Hawaii later this month. The Philippines has not conducted any joint maritime patrol in the disputed South China Sea but has had continuing joint military exercises with the US military during the regular “Balikatan” (shoulder to shoulder) exercises. Former Magdalo partylist Rep. Ashley Acedillo told the Inquirer by phone that the forthcoming meetings and discussions between the US and the Philippines are likely “diplomatic speak for revisiting our relationship.” “Like anything in the world, our relationship has its ups and downs. And today is a period of down in our relations,” Acedillo said. Acedillo also explained that joint maritime exercises are conducted only in “limited areas, not straying too far away from friendly line.” On the other hand, a joint patrol includes the operational area and goes beyond the 12 nautical mile territorial area such as the exclusive economic zone and international waters, he said. “As far as I know, we have not yet conducted any joint maritime patrols with the US,” Acedillo said. As for Duterte’s announcement he wanted the US Special Forces to leave Mindanao, Hachigian said Washington has yet to receive an official request for such from the Philippine government. READ: US: No formal request from Philippines to remove military “The US military presence in the Philippines is at the request of the leaders of that country and we will continue to consult closely with our Filipino partners to appropriately tailor the assistance to whatever approach the new administration adopts. We received no official request,” she said. RAM

3 suspected car thieves slain in Laguna SAN PEDRO CITY, Philippines — Three suspected car thieves were killed in a shoot-out with policemen in Sta. Rosa City in Laguna province early Wednesday, police said. Supt. Peter Dionisio, chief of the regional police Highway Patrol Group in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), said the suspects drew the attention of policemen at 1:30 a.m. after they noticed something wrong with the plate of the group’s Toyota Altis. “The plate number didn’t match the model of the car, drawing suspicions that the car plate was illegally switched,” Dionisio told the Inquirer in a telephone interview. As policemen tried to approach the car, which was parked in front of a convenience store, the group sped off and did not stop at several police checkpoints along the way. Policemen chased the suspects, who were firing at the lawmen, until the car fell into a ditch in Barangay (village) Tagapo. Dionisio said the suspects continued firing as they stepped out of the vehicle, forcing policemen to shoot back. Two of the suspects were killed instantly, while one died as he was being taken to a hospital in the city. Police have yet to identify the suspects. Dionisio said the suspects could be car thieves who target vehicle rental companies in Metro Manila and in Central Luzon region. 21 Romulo Neri cleared in NBN-ZTE graft case The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division has dismissed the graft case of former National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) Director General Romulo Neri over the allegedly overpriced national broadband network (NBN) deal with Chinese firm ZTE during the Arroyo administration. In a decision promulgated Sept. 9, the anti-graft court Fifth Division said it granted the demurrer to evidence filed by Neri to dismiss the graft case filed against him in 2010. Neri was charged with graft for allegedly meeting with former Commission on Elections chairperson Benjamin Abalos and ZTE officials when the NBN project was still under assessment by the government. Neri’s graft charges stemmed from allegations that from 2006 to 2007, he had lunch and played golf with ZTE officials and met with Abalos at the time the broadband deal was under review by Neda. Abalos was accused of lobbying for ZTE. Neri was accused of having a financial interest in the project in violation of Section 3(h) of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act when he met with ZTE officials, even though he as a member of the Cabinet was prohibited from having financial interests in any government contract. “Here, we find the evidence of the prosecution insufficient to sustain the charges or justify a verdict of guilt. The prosecution failed to discharge the burden of proving that accused Neri violated Section 3(h) of the Republic Act 3019 by proof beyond reasonable doubt for its failure to satisfactorily establish that said accused had financial or pecuniary interest, directly or indirectly, in the subject NBN-ZTE deal,” the court said. Neri faces a separate graft case before the anti-graft court Fourth Division for causing undue injury to government in the broadband deal. He was charged with former president now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo and former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo. The case is still subject to demurrer to evidence Earlier, the anti-graft court Fourth Division dismissed Abalos’ graft case of having financial interest in the NBN project when he brokered the NBN deal with China. READ: Ex-Comelec chair Abalos acquitted from graft over NBN-ZTE deal However, the same division found NBN star witness Rodolfo Lozada guilty of graft in a separate charge of causing undue injury to government over an anomalous land deal when he was president and chief executive officer of the state-owned Philippine Forest Corp. (PFC) in 2007 and 2008. JE

Apple iOS 10 update causing problems for some iPhone users Apple had been heavily marketing the new iOS update a couple of months back but when the time came for it to be released, trouble brewed as multiple complaints about the update streamed over social media. For some users, the update process would fail and would be accompanied by a message asking them to plug the iOS device into a PC or Mac for complete system restoration, reports The Verge. A spokesperson from Apple said in a statement to The Verge, “We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers.” Although the initial installation bug proved to be a major headache for a number of affected users, Apple says this has been fixed and that their customers will now be able to safely update their iOS 10 devices. But just in case, it would be wise to keep a backup for an iOS device before proceeding with the update. Alfred Bayle

Indonesia captures top militant in new blow to Santoso group JAKARTA, Indonesia — A senior figure from the East Indonesia Mujahideen militant group has been captured and one of the group’s members killed in a joint operation with the military, Indonesian police said. The capture of Muhammad Basri on Wednesday is another blow to the militant group, based in the jungles of Central Sulawesi province. The group’s leader, Santoso, who was Indonesia’s most wanted Islamic radical, was killed by security forces in a shootout in July. Basri was Santoso’s deputy and may have assumed leadership of the group’s dwindling ranks following Santoso’s death. It claims allegiance to the Islamic State group. The capacity of Indonesia’s militant groups to carry out deadly attacks has been significantly weakened by a sustained crackdown following the Bali bombings in 2002 that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners. But Indonesians who traveled to Syria to fight with IS have directed and funded attacks from abroad, including a suicide bombing and gun attack in Jakarta in January that killed eight people, including four militants. National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said the man shot dead Wednesday near Poso Pesisir village in Poso district of Sulawesi was Andika Eka Putra. He said police and military forces are still searching for the remaining 13 members of the East Indonesia Mujahideen group, including Ali Kalora, who is believed to have a key role. “We are grateful that Basri, our important target after Santoso, was captured alive,” said National Police Chief Tito Karnavian. “This arrest will improve security in Poso.” Karnavian said that Basri will be flown to Jakarta for further questioning. About 2,500 security personnel, including elite army troops, intensified operations this year in Poso, a mountainous district of Central Sulawesi province considered an extremist hotbed, to try and capture Santoso and his followers. 24 Davao police set to file murder rap vs blast suspect The Davao City police is set to file murder complaint against the primary suspect behind the deadly blast in Davao City that claimed the lives of 14 persons and injured 71 others. “We have identified the suspect and we are filing a case against him today,” Senior Supt. Michael John Dubria, chief of the Davao City police, said in a press conference in Davao City on Wednesday. Dubria, however, declined to disclose the identity of the suspect, who left a black bag containing a homemade bomb at the Roxas night market last September 2, while the investigation is ongoing. READ: LOOK: PNP releases sketch of male suspect in Davao bombing But he said the police are looking into the male suspect’s possible connection with any terror group or syndicate. “We are currently investigating his affiliation. We just cannot go on accusing or trying to identify him with any specific group. That is still an intelligence job. I don’t want to make a premature statement about it,” he said. “As of the moment, we have identified the suspect and soon that information will be released to the public,” Dubria added. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte has offered a P3-million reward for the arrest of the culprits behind the explosion. He said the police invited at least 11 persons of interest for questioning as well as the blast victims. The artist’s sketch of the suspect was formed based on the descriptions of the witnesses. Asked to comment on reports that the suspect is still hiding in Davao City, the police official said: “Actually, we are working on that. We are getting information. We are trying to track him down.” Dubria also refused to confirm whether the deadly explosion was perpetrated by “narco-politicians” following the arrest of Talitay Vice Mayor Abdulwahab Sabal of Maguindanao and three others for their alleged involvement in the bombing. READ: Maguindanao vice mayor, 3 others tagged in Davao blast face probe Aguirre said Sabal, along with wife Mohanna Sabal, bodyguard Nasser Maulana and driver Norodin Abas were presented for inquest to the Department of Justice (DOJ) after their arrest at the Cotabato City airport last weekened. “If (PNP chief Dir. Gen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa) said that then he has all the resources to validate that information. It is a higher level information and as of the moment, I can only speak for Davao City police,” Dubria said.

Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones disappointed in anthem protests around NFL FRISCO, Texas -- Several NFL teams had players take a knee or raise their fists during the national anthem during Week 1 in response to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick 's protests of racial inequality raised during the preseason. The Dallas Cowboys were not one of them. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones was pleased with his team's decision. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, Jones did not sound as if he condoned the acts of those who did take a knee or raised their fists. “I got to give a big pat on the back to our entire team, our coaching staff, our entire organization,” Jones told the Cowboys’ flagship station. “We strongly, strongly support the flag in every way we support -- and it’s almost ridiculous to be saying it -- the people who for generations and generations have given it all up so that we can get out here and show off in front of millions of people on television. "We respect that so much. That’s the real business. The forum of the NFL and the forum on television is a very significant thing. I’m for it being used in every way we can to support the great, great contributors in our society, and that’s people that have supported America, the flag, and there’s no reason not to go all out right there. And for anybody to use parts of that visibility to do otherwise is really disappointing.”

Denzel Washington stars in ‘The Magnificent Seven’ When director Antoine Fuqua was searching for the perfect actor to lead the band of brothers that fight against injustice in The Magnificent Seven, he knew he needed an iconic figure; a man who, as he succinctly puts it himself, has “total gravitas on screen.” And he had just one name of his list: Denzel Washington. Fuqua remembers a meeting with studio executives when he first mentioned Washington’s name and an expectant hush settled on the room. “I said, ‘Denzel Washington would be amazing in this movie. Think about it. Who else can pull that off? The weight, the voice, the power – total gravitas on screen.” At that point Fuqua had no idea if Washington would say ‘yes’ but the two share a powerful creative bond, a friendship, and a very successful cinematic history and, after a lunch meeting where he pitched the idea, the actor was on board. “Antoine and I have obviously had great success,” says Washington. “We won our Academy Award with Training Day and we had great financial success with The Equalizer. He’s a master filmmaker – he knows what he is doing and he knows how to put films together and he allows me to do what it is I know how to do. I think we are a good fit.” They are indeed. With Washington playing the role of Sam Chisolm, who recruits a group of outlaws to help protect a town from a brutal tyrant, an all- star cast – including Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio – fell into place around him and the seven were ready to ride on to our screens. Fuqua recalls watching westerns with his family when he was a boy – they are, he says, a huge part of his own personal film history – including the much loved original, The Magnificent Seven , which starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. Washington himself hasn’t seen the original or indeed, the Seven Samurai, the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film that inspired director John Sturges’ 1960 western. “I think he got interested in movies from watching westerns, frontier movies, as a child,” says the actor. “And so this is a life-long dream come true for him.” Washington preferred, instead, to trust his impeccably honed instincts for a great story and concentrate on making their film with Fuqua, a filmmaker he admires, from a brilliant screenplay by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk and creating their own contemporary western. “I didn’t grow up watching movies, you know my father was a minister so we weren’t allowed to watch a lot of movies. I saw Bonanza (the 1960s TV series), so we got to see some shows,” he recalls. “And you know I didn’t approach the character based on what people say or have said about the past movies because I don’t know how to play ‘mythical.’ I don’t know what that means. I just look at what the script gives me and what it says about this man in these circumstances.” “Antoine had put a great team together and you trust in each department’s ability to handle it. And you know, it all starts with the material and the writing and shaping the material. You trust in that.” The story – and Fuqua says that he wants to honor the spirit of both previous films – is both timeless and powerful; a classic tale of good versus evil set to the majestic backdrop of the old west. A young woman, Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) seeks out a loner, Sam Chisolm, after she sees him arresting the man he has been searching for, to serve a warrant. Emma pleads with him to help to defend her small town from a ruthless land baron, Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), and his army of henchmen. Chisolm, as the audience will discover, is haunted by tragic events in the past and has his own personal reasons for accepting what could be a suicidal challenge. “He has come to this town to do a job but he can see that the town is being taken over. And when Chisolm meets Emma he can see her fire,” says Washington. “He can relate to her and her circumstances and I think he feels like this is his chance to set things right, to do something for her that he was unable to do in his own case, with his own family. I think he sees her resolve and her determination to seek justice.” “He wasn’t able to serve justice in his own family and he now has this desire to right wrongs, to make evil people pay for their crimes.” One by one he recruits the disparate band of men who will join the cause – Josh Faraday (Pratt), a hard drinking gambler with an eye for the ladies and a gunslinger, Goodnight Robicheaux (Hawke), a sharp shooter, Jack Horne (D’Onofrio), a brilliant tracker, Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) an outlaw, Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee), an expert with knives and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier) a Comanche warrior. At first, they agree to fight simply for money, but when they are confronted with the harsh realities of what life is like under Bogue’s tyranny, their quest becomes far nobler and they are willing to put their own lives on the line and stand up for justice. “The film starts with a scene where Bogue’s men are terrorizing people and he literally kicks the church door down and burns the church down. So there’s a spiritual aspect to it, of good against evil and Bogue personifies everything evil,” explains Washington. “These men are all there for a number of different reasons – they all have their own motivations for joining Chisolm at first – but that changes when they see that Bogue has enslaved these people. “They see how his evil man has broken the backs, literally and spiritually, of these people and I think that affects each of the seven of us in a different way but it makes us all determined to do something about it.” “There’s something timeless about the idea of protecting the weak, the innocent – which is what these people are. Chisolm didn’t come to the town for that reason but he does have those abilities, he can fight – and each of the seven does too – so he is the right man in the right place at the right time.” His own character, Chisolm, is a classic from the western genre – a conflicted loner with a troubled history, a hero who will step up and do the right thing. “My character is a duly sworn warrant officer from Kansas. He’s also a licensed peace officer in Arkansas, Nebraska, Indian Territories and seven other states – that’s what he always says to everyone when he meets them because he’s a black man in the frontier, in a position of authority, so he needs to let people know that he has authority from the government to do his job.” “He’s a loner, he’s unafraid and he’s a master with his weapon but he’s not a braggart. He’s a lonely man, an honorable and courageous man, you know, everything I’m not,” he laughs. “He’s complicated and he’s not used to dealing with people, especially some young girl like Emma but when he finds out the circumstances and what’s involved, he has a particular purpose.” The film is an action-packed, brilliantly-crafted story of the old west, with memorable characters, and, says Washington, it also poses an interesting moral question. The Magnificent Seven was a long, at times grueling, shoot in high temperatures, with long days riding horses and filming action scenes. But it was a lot of fun, too, according to Washington. “It’s fun because we’re on our horses and we’re all together and guys are talking, cracking jokes and you know, the guys are spinning their guns. I never had the opportunity – and I don’t know if I’ll get another opportunity – to do a western. “Maybe it shouldn’t even be called a western – it’s a story that takes place on the frontier, on the edges of a young and new America. And it’s about what happens on those edges when there’s lawlessness and sometimes a lack of order so men like these seven will come together to make sense out of it.” Before the cameras rolled, Washington, and his fellow cast, received weapons training from Thell Reed – the stuntman, armorer and exhibition shooter – who has worked as a consultant on a host of movies. Washington was fast on the draw – almost too fast. “He would always tell me ‘smooth is fast..’ You know, I have fast hands and I’ve been boxing for years. I’m just fast but he was always telling me ‘slow down! Slow down!” he laughs. “Thell is the man. He’s worked with John Wayne. You know, he’s the man. He’s the truth…” Washington was also delighted to be working with his fellow cast members on The Magnificent Seven. “ Everybody is strong, in their own way, they are very strong individuals. They are good men and a good young lady and you know, I’m somewhat like this character in that I’m more of an outsider and maybe that’s right for this part, you know.” “I didn’t hang out too much with the fellas and that’s just sort of my nature anyway but there’s a lot of talent on the screen, that’s for sure.” He did, though, share a few jokes with Chris Pratt, star of Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. “I always kid Chris and I call him Jurassic Boy,” he smiles. “And you know he’s a very, very fine young man. “He’s a spiritual young man and a good kid – I call him a ‘kid’ because he’s a kid to me, but he’s a grown man and a really good dude. I like him a lot and with all that he is dealing with now in his super-stardom, it doesn’t seem to affect him. He’s been raised right – he’s an ordinary man with an extraordinary job, that’s the way I like to look at it.” You might say the same thing about Denzel Washington – a good man doing an extraordinary job, which made him perfect for The Magnificent Seven. And Antoine Fuqua knew that right from the start. “The Magnificent Seven” is opening across the Philippines on Sept. 21 .

Ejercito was referring to the Cypress Tower along C-5 road in Taguig City, which he said is a project of DMCI Project Developers Inc. It was also DMCI that developed the controversial Torre de Manila condominium at the Luneta Park. READ: Torre de Manila developer: Photobombing not against the law | DMCI chair: Nobody hit buildings near ‘Ka Andres’ He said he has been receiving complaints that the tower is blocking the flight path of incoming aircraft at the airport, which could be one of the reasons why many flights had been diverted to Clark International Airport. Because of the tower, he said he was told that the 300 feet minimum decision altitude (MDA) of aircrafts to land had been adjusted to 900 feet. “Probably that’s one of the reasons why the aircraft with bad, poor visibility, mas madalas ngayon ang (flight) diversions (have been diverted more often),” Ejercito said during the hearing of the Senate committee on finance on the proposed 2017 budget of the Department of Transportation (DOTr). “Nabanggit ko kasi dati, I’ve been receiving complaints that ‘yung Cypress Tower along C-5 is almost at the flight path of incoming aircraft…Is it one of the factors, the Cypress Tower, in [increasing] the minimum decision altitude (MDA) na dating 300 (feet), naging 900 (feet)? Marami hong mada- divert (na flights) because of that di ho ba?” the senator asked. (I have mentioned before that I have been receiving complaints that the Cypress Tower on C-5 is almost at the flight path of incoming aircraft. Is the Cypress Tower one of the reasons in [increasing] the minimum decision altitude from 300 feet to 900 feet? Won’t many flights get diverted because of it?) Manuel Antonio Tamayo, deputy director general for administration of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) confirmed that the MDA was adjusted “specifically because of this tower.” “I’d agree Mr. Senator. This was done several years ago. They had to adjust the minimum decision height for the non- position approach specifically because of this tower,” Tamayo said. “However, if we use the ILS (Instrument Landing System) approach—‘yun hong ILS approach—we can still descend to 375 feet and the aircraft will be approximately 1.5 miles away from the runway,” he explained. Tamayo pointed out that the “non-position approach” was the only one affected by the building. Asked by Senator Loren Legarda, chair of the committee, if the building would pose danger to the public, the CAAP official said: “Now, it’s not because we increased the minimum decision altitude.” “So you have to adjust because of a building? It’s a condominium, it could have been avoided,” Legarda said. It was Ejercito, who responded to Legarda’s remarks. “Madam, you will be surprised, (if you find out) who the developer is. Before it was just a photobomber in Rizal. Now it’s an obstruction in the flight path,” he said. Asked by Legarda what he meant by his statement, Ejercito said: “I think it’s developed by DMCI also, di ho ba (am I correct)?” Legarda then asked the CAAP official if it has been a practice that the air traffic is the one adjusting with infrastructures or of it is the other way around. “Definitely ma’am, it should be regulated,” Tamayo said. 28 Strongest typhoon this year hits Taiwan Parts of Taiwan were brought to a standstill Wednesday as the strongest typhoon of the year skirted past the island’s southern tip, knocking out power for more than 180,000 households. Although super typhoon Meranti (named Ferdie in the Philippines) did not make landfall, the storm brought record strong winds and torrential rains to eastern and southern Taiwan. At 0215 GMT, Meranti was 30 kilometers southwest of southernmost Hengchun township, packing gusts of up to 263 kilometers (163 miles an hour). Hengchun’s observation station recorded the strongest winds in its 120 year history earlier Wednesday, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau. “Meranti will have its most significant impact on Taiwan today,” said forecaster Hsieh Pei-yun. Television footage showed flooded streets and violent winds in southern Kenting, a tourist destination known for its white-sand beaches. School and work were cancelled for most eastern and southern counties while trains running along the east coast have been halted — affecting travel for the Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend which starts Thursday. The storm is expected to dump as much as 800 millimeters (31.5 inches) of rain in mountainous areas, potentially triggering landslides. Close to 1,500 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas, with about half in temporary shelters, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center. Meranti was moving northwest into the Taiwan Strait at 18 kilometers an hour. Another storm brewing east of the Philippines may also affect Taiwan later this week. The weather bureau’s Hsieh said tropical storm Malakas was expected to be closest to the island on Friday and Saturday, but was unlikely to make landfall. 30 Pokémon Go update released for Android and iOS Just when people thought that the Pokémon Go hype has waned, Niantic releases a new update that may get some of the players that have grown bored with the mobile game to become active again. The new 0.37.0 update includes the activation of the previously announced Buddy Pokémon system wherein trainers are able to assign one of their Pokémons as a “buddy.” By doing so, trainers can earn candy for their buddy Pokémon by walking a certain distance. Other parts of the update include several fixes for known issues such as eggs hatching without displaying the animation. Smaller Pokémon are also made easier to select. Players may notice improved performance whenever their devices switch networks where the previous version would sometimes hang or stop updating. Niantic is continuing its crackdown on bots and scrapers. Jail-broken and rooted devices will also no longer be supported by the game to help stem the number of game-hacking incidents. Finally the update adds support for the Pokémon Go Plus accessory that will alert trainers to nearby Pokémon without the need to constantly watch their screens while walking. The Pokémon Go craze has died down just as quickly as it had gained initial popularity. It is hard to predict whether or not the new update will be able to win back the players that had gone inactive. Alfred Bayle

Lacson to Duterte communications team: Speak in one voice Learn “the art of lying closest to the truth.” Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson had this advice to President Rodrigo Duterte’s communications officials and closest advisers who have spent recent weeks seemingly chasing tails in explaining apparently confusing statements of the chief executive. “When doing damage control, they should learn the art of lying closest to the truth,” said Lacson Wednesday morning. He said those who speak on the President’s behalf should do so “in one tone and language.” READ: Miscommunication, disinformation office “Since President Duterte is apparently averse to unsolicited advice even from his closest cabinet members, they should learn to anticipate the current developing issues and be able to slip thru the special assistant [to the President Christopher “Bong” Go] a simple, informative executive brief on a regular basis,” Lacson told the Inquirer in a text message. 34 Gomez gives up late homer, Phillies fall to Pirates 5-3 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jeanmar Gomez and the Phillies bullpen couldn’t capitalize on yet another strong starting pitching performance. Sean Rodriguez had a pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth inning off Gomez, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Phillies 5-3 on Tuesday night. It overshadowed a quality outing from right-hander Alec Asher, who allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. “Our starting pitching the last couple of weeks has been as good as anybody in baseball,” Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said, adding “Asher was the bright spot tonight.” Asher was acquired in the 2015 trade that sent left-hander Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers. Asher has now allowed just two earned runs (1.46 ERA) in his two starts for the Phillies this season. “I thought it went well,” said Asher, who threw 95 pitches. “I wasn’t tired at all.” Pittsburgh remained six games behind the Mets for the second NL wild card. Rodriguez hit for pitcher Felipe Rivero (1-5) with two on and one out and drilled a 2-2 pitch from Gomez (3-4) into the second row of seats in right field. “It was a tough day for me,” Gomez said. “It was a slider that was up. Some of my pitches were flat.” Rodriguez’s home run was his 13th of the season and first since Aug. 14. It was also his first pinch-hit home run since May 25, 2013. Rodriguez put the Pirates ahead after Francisco Cervelli reached on a walk and Jordy Mercer doubled off Gomez. Tony Watson struck out two in the ninth for his 12th save. Playing in just his third major league game, left fielder Roman Quinn had two hits and scored a go-ahead run in the eighth on Freddy Galvis’ sacrifice fly. In his first 13 big-league plate appearances, Quinn has reached base safely seven times. “He’s an exciting player to watch,” Mackanin said. Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova entered 5-0 since being acquired from the New York Yankees on Aug. 1. He allowed two runs and five hits while recording a season-high 11 strikeouts but left the game in the seventh after throwing 92 pitches. Nova missed the chance to become the second Pirates pitcher to go 6-0 in his first eight starts. “I was getting ahead in the count and I threw some good sinkers and that was a good thing for me,” Nova said. “They’re an aggressive team and they were out there swinging.” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was ejected for the sixth time this season and the 51st time in his managerial career in the sixth inning. Hurdle vehemently argued with first-base umpire Alan Porter over a call that resulted in Ryan Howard beating out a double-play grounder to bring in the go-ahead run for Philadelphia. The night was a mixed bag for Pirates rookie second baseman Adam Frazier, who gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Josh Bell followed with a double that would have scored Frazier. Frazier also botched a fourth-inning grounder by Howard that tied the score at 1, had an errant throw on a potential double-play grounder by Maikel Franco that gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the sixth and grounded out with the bases loaded to end the seventh with the score tied 2-2 after Jung Ho Kang scored on a wild pitch. UP NEXT Pirates: LHP Steven Brault (0-2, 3.38 ERA) will make his sixth career start when the series resumes Wednesday night. The 24-year-old has received just five runs of support in his five previous starts. Phillies: RHP Jake Thompson (1-5, 6.05 ERA) will make his eighth start of the season. The 22-year-old is looking for his first win since Aug. 12. The Trump International Hotel held a “soft opening” of the luxury hotel on Sept. 12 ahead of a grand opening ceremony in October. 35 Samsung to limit battery charging on Galaxy Note 7 phones to prevent fires Samsung ( SSNLF ) said it's planning to roll out a fix next week for Note 7 phones in its home market of South Korea that will prevent the batteries from charging above 60% of their capacity. "This plan is for the safety of the customers," the company said in a front-page ad in the newspaper Seoul Shinmun. It wasn't clear if or when the software update might be extended to other affected countries like the U. S. Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker, is recalling 2.5 million Note 7 phones globally after dozens of users complained of the devices bursting into flames while charging. Related: Samsung won't be the last to have exploding batteries The fire risk has prompted warnings from authorities not to use the phones on planes , trains and buses. Over the weekend, Samsung urged Note 7 owners to power them down and exchange them for a different phone as soon as possible. Widening concerns about the Note 7, one of Samsung's flagship phones, have wiped billions of dollars off the company's market value. 38 Cardinals relocate Cubs' division-clinching party to Wrigley ST. LOUIS – Load up the bandwagon and beer kegs. The Cubs’ division-title party just got postponed and moved to Wrigley Field. The Cardinals hit a pair of two-run homers off Cubs starter Jason Hammel to beat the Cubs 4-2 Tuesday night and keep the Cubs from tearing up Busch Stadium on Wednesday with an in-your-face clinching celebration. “No fan wants to see a division rival clinch on your field, and we don’t either,” said Cardinals left fielder Brandon Moss, who snapped out of a slump in a big way with a two-hit game that included the go-ahead homer in the sixth. “We’d love to be in the situation the Cubs are in,” Moss said. “They’re in a much better position than we are. But we have a chance to do something about it.” Victory on Tuesday night -- and a chance to clinch Wednesday in St. Louis - - were just out of the reach of Kris Bryant and the Cubs. For the Cardinals, the victory meant they stayed a half-game behind the Mets for the National League’s final playoff spot – the spot the Cubs earned last year before knocking off the 100-win Cardinals in the NL Division Series. For the Cubs, the division lead goes back to 16 games over the Cardinals with 18 to play and keeps the magic number for clinching at three. The Cubs can clinch no earlier than Thursday, when they open their final homestand of the year against the Brewers. “I don’t think anybody cares [where or when],” said Cubs leadoff man Dexter Fowler, who gave the Cubs a quick lead with a homer on the fifth pitch of the game. “It’s inevitable at this point. It’s just a matter of time.” Make no mistake: A lot of the Cubs wanted to clinch on the Cards in St. Louis, which would have taken a three-game sweep. Instead, the perennial bullies of the NL Central provided a one-night reminder that the Cubs haven’t quite finished the job yet – much less finished off the Cardinals, who are 8-7 against the Cubs this season with four meetings left. “It’s nice to do what we’ve done this year, that’s for sure,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said, “and what we’ve done top to bottom the last few years. But this year to win the division, it’s not easy to do. “Maybe it’s looked a little easy with the way we’ve played, but it’s not easy. You can’t take that for granted.” The Cubs send red-hot Jon Lester to the mound Wednesday with a chance to win the series, drop the magic number to one and make the Cardinals’ playoff drive one game tougher. Either way, the biggest celebration of the year for a team that celebrates every time it wins a game is on tap for Wrigley. “I can imagine that for those people following us really closely, watching all the games, coming to a lot of games, that this is a sweet time for them to really enjoy the moment,” said first-year Cub Ben Zobrist, who mentioned that teammates talked in recent days of clinching on the Cardinals. “I’ve heard some guys mention that. “I think for the guys that have been here for a while and have endured some of the trouncings they’ve taken here in the past from the Cardinals, that might be sweet for some of those guys. But for the rest of us, it would be probably even sweeter to do it at home.” The Cubs lost Tuesday despite knocking struggling Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia out of the game in the second when they loaded the bases with two out, leading 2-0. They mustered just one hit the rest of the way as Alex Reyes took over and shut them down the next 4 1/3 innings. “Barring the most amazing collapse in major league history, we know we’re not going to catch them,” Moss said. “But for them to [clinch in St. Louis], they would’ve had to sweep us. That would’ve been a terrible thing to let happen here. We’d have been in a terrible spot.”

No place to keep, man roams Delhi with wife's body in ambulance Chhote Lal. Pic/YouTube New Delhi: A man had to roam around for several hours with his wife's body in an ambulance as his landlord allegedly did not allow to keep it at his rented accommodation in Karkardooma village in east Delhi. Chhote Lal, who runs a tea shop, had admitted his wife Anju, who was 35, to Hedgewar Hospital two- three days ago after she complained of high fever. She died in the hospital yesterday, and it was suspected to be a case of "chikungunya", police said today. When the grieving husband took her body to his rented home in Karkardooma, his landlord allegedly didn't allow him to keep it there. He then tried to keep the body in the lane where his house is situated but some neighbours allegedly objected saying children in the locality could get scared. However, Babloo, Lal's landlord told police he helped him with money so that he could get an "AC ambulance to keep the body". He said Chhote Lal stays on the third floor of the house in a single room and the body would have started decaying had it been kept in the cramped space with no ventilation. He told police that he had given Rs 2,000 to Chhote Lal and got an AC ambulance arranged for him to preserve the body for the night before cremation. He also tried to take back the body to the hospital where he was allegedly told that they couldn't keep it there. "With no option left, Chhote Lal then kept roaming with the body of his wife in the ambulance for close to four hours before he was spotted around midnight by the police beat staff near the Cross River Mall who came to know about his plight. "When he revealed that he wasn't allowed to keep his wife's body at his rented accommodation, the staff called up one Bhanwar Singh, a businessman residing in the area around 12.30 am," said a senior police officer. "Singh extended help to Chhote Lal and the body was kept at his house overnight. Some policemen and Singh's staff later helped Lal arrange for the last rites of his wife who was cremated this morning," he said. Hedgewar Hospital authorities, however, claimed, "no chikungunya or dengue death have taken our hospital in this season. " "We are getting 800-1,000 people in our fever clinics every day but only 18- 20 people have been confirmed to have been diagnosed with chikungunya," a senior doctor said.

Jury Selection to Begin in Death Penalty Retrial Jury selection is set to begin in the sentencing retrial for a man who was sentenced to death in the 2001 carjack killings of two Massachusetts men. A jury gave Gary Sampson the death penalty in 2003, but that was overturned eight years later by a judge who found that one of the jurors had lied repeatedly about her background. Sampson pleaded guilty to carjacking and killing 69-year-old Philip McCloskey and 19-year-old Jonathan Rizzo during a weeklong crime rampage in July 2001. The new jury will be asked to decide if Sampson should receive the death penalty or life in prison. Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Wednesday in U. S. District Court in Boston. Sampson also was convicted in state court in New Hampshire for killing a third man.

Coroner: Heart Found Next to Gas Station Likely Human A coroner says a heart found in a plastic bag on the ground next to an Ohio gas station appears to be human. Huron County Coroner Jeff Harwood said Tuesday pathologists in Toledo are running tests to confirm whether it's human and whether fluid found in the two quart zipped bag is some type of preservative. The heart was found Aug. 25 in Norwalk by an ambulance crew that had parked at the gas station. Police and Harwood were called to the scene where Harwood placed it in a cooler for delivery to Toledo. Harwood says it appears to be a preserved specimen with "anomalies" likely present at birth. He says the origin of the heart is a mystery along with why someone left it next to the gas station.

Off bench, Ellsbury & Gregorius power Yanks past Dodgers 3-0 NEW YORK (AP) — Two big swings, both off the bench. Left out of the starting lineup, Jacoby Ellsbury and Didi Gregorius hit back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches in the seventh inning to power the New York Yankees past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 on Tuesday night. Gary Sanchez added a leadoff home run in the eighth, CC Sabathia pitched three-hit ball for 6 1/3 innings and the Yankees helped their unexpected playoff push by winning for the eighth time in 10 games. New York pulled even with Detroit, two games behind Toronto and Baltimore for the two AL wild cards. “I think rest is helpful at this point in the season,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We’ve seen a couple of times when we’ve given Jacoby a day off, he’s been really good the next day and goes on a pretty good streak. So hopefully it happens when we give him a half day.” Prized rookie Julio Urias was lifted in the fourth by the Dodgers, who had won seven of nine before their latest offensive flop against left-handed pitching. They entered play with a four-game lead in the NL West over San Francisco, which hosted San Diego later. “As we finish out the next 18 games, we’re going to see some left-handed pitching and rightfully so,” manager Dave Roberts said after his team was blanked for the 10th time overall and second in three games. “So there’s got to be some point where we break through.” In the series finale Wednesday afternoon, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw makes his first career start at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia struck out seven and walked one as the Yankees rebounded from consecutive losses following a seven-game winning streak. Adam Warren (3-1) retired both batters he faced, and Dellin Betances got four outs for his 11th save. The five-hitter was New York’s 10th shutout of the season. “This is lot of fun. This is what September baseball is about,” Sabathia said. Ellsbury originally was rested against the left-hander, but entered in the fifth when rookie right fielder Aaron Judge exited with an injury. With one out in the seventh, Ellsbury drove a hanging breaking ball from right-hander Ross Stripling (4-7) into the second deck in right field to snap a scoreless tie. “I knew at probably some point I’d come in the game,” Ellsbury said. “I started getting ready about the third inning, so even with Judgie getting hurt in the fifth, I was ready to go.” Gregorius, nursing a sore rib, connected on Stripling’s next pitch for his first career pinch-hit homer. “It’s good. I got treatment on it. If they needed me, I was ready,” the shortstop said. Sanchez went the opposite way against Jesse Chavez, the rookie’s 14th home run in 136 at-bats this year. Starlin Castro had three hits for New York. The 20-year-old Urias, outdone by a fellow southpaw 16 years his senior, walked three and threw 78 pitches in what is expected to be his final start this season. Los Angeles plans to put Urias in the bullpen to limit his innings and get him ready for his potential postseason role. “I’ll be happy with whatever decision they take,” Urias said through a translator. BIG SWINGERS The last time two Yankees hit consecutive homers in a game neither started, it was Moose Skowron and Tommy Byrne who connected in July 1957 at the Chicago White Sox, the Elias Sports Bureau said. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: LHP Brett Anderson, on the disabled list with a blister on his index finger, is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Oklahoma City in Game 3 of the Pacific Coast League championship series against El Paso. Yankees: Judge was removed with a right oblique strain and will have an MRI on Wednesday. “We won’t see him for a while,” Girardi said, acknowledging it’s possible Judge could miss the rest of the season. Judge was batting in the fourth when he was checked by Girardi and a trainer, but initially stayed in and drew a walk. He said he got hurt on one particular swing. “Just wanted to try to finish out the at-bat,” he said. “It’s tough. No one wants to go through it, especially right now.” … Girardi said he thinks Gregorius feels better and will be able to start Wednesday. UP NEXT Dodgers: Kershaw (11-3, 1.89 ERA) is set to make his second start since missing more than two months with a back injury. The ace left-hander threw 66 pitches over three innings last Friday in a 4-1 loss at Miami, but Roberts wouldn’t say how many Kershaw might throw this time. “It’ll be more than his last start,” Roberts said. “We expect Clayton to be Clayton.” Kershaw has faced the Yankees twice at Dodger Stadium, allowing two earned runs over 15 innings (1.20 ERA) in a pair of no-decisions — the last in July 2013. Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (6-11, 5.07) is 0-1 with a 4.65 ERA in his past six starts. 46 46 PH to keep status quo in West Philippine Sea — defense chief Lacking the capability to enforce the Philippines’s rights in the West Philippine Sea, Manila will maintain the status quo in territories also being claimed by other countries, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Wednesday, September 14, 2016. Delfin made the disclosure before the House committee on appropriations during the hearing for the Department of National Defense’s proposed P178.2 billion budget for 2017. Following the previous administration’s falling out with China, President Duterte has called for bilateral talks with Beijing over the resource-rich waters. Duterte has been perceived as favoring China over long-time ally, the United States. “As per the pronouncement of the President, we will maintain status quo in the West Philippine Sea so that there would be no miscalculations,” Lorenzana said. “We don’t have any assets to confront the other claimants in the area,” he added. The Philippines won its maritime case against China over the West Philippine Sea, after the United Nations Arbitral Tribunal in the Hague ruled that Beijing’s nine-dash line claim to almost all of the South China Sea had no historic and legal basis. The tribunal said the West Philippine Sea was within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). READ: Philippines wins arbitration case vs. China over South China Sea Duterte expressed willingness to open bilateral talks with China even as Beijing continued to build artificial islands within the Philippines’s EEZ and shun Filipino fishermen from resource-rich waters and marine features like the Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal.

Electricity rates go down in September MANILA, Philippines – Meralco announced that the residential rate for a typical household will go down this September by around PhP0. 0451 per kilowatthour (kWh) , thereby bringing it down to PhP8.46 per kWh. This translates to a reduction of around PhP9 in the electricity bill of a household with monthly consumption of 200 kWh. The reduction is due to the downward movement in the transmission charge, which more than offset a higher generation charge. This month’s overall rate is lower by PhP0.09 per kWh compared to September 2015’s PhP8.55 per kWh. This month, there was an increase in the generation charge, which is PhP0.0879 per kWh higher than last month’s PhP3.85 per kWh. At PhP3.94 per kWh, the generation charge is PhP0.19 per kWh lower compared to September 2015’s PhP4.13 per kWh. The higher generation charge was more than offset by a decrease in the transmission charge of PhP0.10 per kWh, mainly due to the reduction in NGCP’s Ancillary Charges. Taxes and other charges also de creased by a combined amount of around PhP0.04 per kWh . Meralco’s distribution, supply, and metering charges, meanwhile, have remained unchanged for 14 months, after they registered a reduction in July 2015. Meralco reiterated that it does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). On top of your power bill, save on time and costs by using your spin-dry washing machine for less than a peso per wash Through its monthly advisory, Meralco offers customers regular tips on safety and energy efficiency. As rains become more regular this La Niña season, this month’s featured tip is using your 7.5kg spin-dry washing machine for less than one peso per wash. By drying your clothes faster, the spin-dry helps you avoid the sampayan and rain-soaked clothes. For more information, watch this month’s Meralco Advisory: ADVT.

British man pleads guilty in Trump attack case in Las Vegas LAS VEGAS — A British man pleaded guilty Tuesday in US federal court to trying to grab a police officer’s gun and open fire at a June campaign rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump in Las Vegas. Standing before a judge in orange jail clothes with the word “detainee” across his back, Michael Steven Sandford acknowledged that he has been treated in the past for mental illness. Court documents say Sandford previously told a federal agent that he drove from California to Las Vegas with a plan to kill Trump. “I plead guilty, your honor,” Sandford told US District Judge James Mahan when asked for his plea to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function. “I tried to take a gun from a policeman to shoot someone with, and I’m pleading guilty,” he said. Sandford didn’t get the gun before he was arrested, and no shots were fired. The judge said he was satisfied that Sandford was fit to enter the plea, even though the defendant said he had taken the anti-psychotic medication risperidone. Sentencing was set for Dec. 13 and Sandford was ordered to remain in federal custody. Under terms of his plea agreement, Sandford could face between 18 and 27 months in a US prison for his two felony convictions. He will get credit for time served, accepting responsibility for the crime and avoiding trial, which had been set to start Oct. 3. He won’t be able to appeal. Sandford could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted of both charges at a trial, and up to 30 years on the three charges he initially faced. READ: Man accused of trying to kill Trump has ‘low self-esteem’ One charge of being an illegal alien knowingly in possession of a firearm will be dropped, prosecutor Nicholas Dickinson said. Sandford is “almost certain” to be deported and banned from returning to the US, according to the plea agreement in which he acknowledges he overstayed his tourist visa and was in the US illegally for almost 10 months at the time of his arrest. Sanford’s pleas came after he met in custody last week with his mother, Lynne Sandford of Dorking, England, and a lawyer who arrived with her from London. Assistant Federal Public Defender Brenda Weksler also was involved in the meetings in Las Vegas. She declined to comment, and said Lynne Sandford and family attorney Saimo Chahal returned to England before Tuesday’s hearing. Chahal said earlier that a psychiatrist she enlisted to review the case determined that Sandford was delusional at the time of the attempted attack. Sandford also suffers seizures, obsession-compulsion, anxiety and autism spectrum disorders, Chahal said. “Michael was not in control at the time of the events and needs help,” the attorney said in an email to The Associated Press before the hearing. “He is desperate to return to the UK to be near his family as he has no ties with the USA.” Court documents say Sandford acknowledged telling the Las Vegas police officer that he wanted a Trump autograph and then grabbing for the officer’s gun with both hands. Sandford told a federal agent that he arrived in Las Vegas two days before the campaign rally, rented a 9mm pistol and fired 20 shots at a paper target at a Las Vegas gun range the day before Trump’s appearance, according to court documents. Sandford told the agent it was the first time he had ever fired a gun. It wasn’t clear if Trump recognized a threat before officers escorted Sandford out of the 1,500-seat theater at the Treasure Island hotel-casino. But the candidate, now the Republican presidential nominee, noticed the commotion. “We love you police. Thank you. Thank you, officers,” Trump said as Sandford was ushered away. In a statement following Sandford’s pleas, US Attorney Daniel Bogden said “attentiveness and quick action” by security officers prevented a shooting in the crowded auditorium. “The result was that no one was injured,” Bogden said. 52 52 Mumbai: In CCI polls, it will take three to tango Kekoo Nicholson current CCI president, Kapil Malhotra and Nitin Dossa, the vintage car man The Cricket Club of India (CCI) elections to be held on September 23 and 24 were supposed to be a battle of the Ks — current president Kekoo Nicholson against his contender Kapil Malhotra, former CCI vice-president. But now, with another candidate — Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) honcho and CCI Executive Committee (EC) member Nitin Dossa — throwing his hat in the ring, it has become a three-horse race for the hot seat. Battle heats up The club has a code of conduct in place that forbids contenders from speaking to the press prior to the elections. A senior member though, spoke for Malhotra that he was a good vice-president and will carry on those qualities to his next post. Dossa, meanwhile, is all set to send out a letter to the club’s 2,400-odd member base, citing his credentials as an administrator. The letter, a copy which is with this paper, state some of his achievements like “creating more space in the stadium house area of the club by pursuing action against illegal encroachments on our collective property.” It also cites another aim of creating a, “centre for senior citizens and a café serving health and diet foods.” A Dossa supporter says it would be foolish to “discount his chances, because of his stellar administrative experience.” Current president Kekoo Nicholson has a substantial support base at the Churchgate club, too, which has been cleaved like all elections, into groups and lobbies. The lobby game With the code of conduct right now, contenders refuse to speak, but in 2011, when Nicholson was contesting against Sevanti Parikh for the presidency he had told this paper, when asked about his campaign strategy, “I am not a traditional politician. I do not spend my time making Gujarati vote banks.” At that time, he had been asked if he meant that Parikh specifically was wooing the club’s substantial Gujarati voter base, but Nicholson had denied it. Parikh had simply laughed in an interview to this paper when asked for a response. This time club insiders, do talk about a Punjabi lobby and a Gujarati lobby, but an irked member says, “why single out CCI? Today, most clubs in the city have these lobbies.” Naval Pundole, chairman of the election overseeing committee and current CCI vice-president refused to be drawn into any controversy. He simply stated that, “Members should use their discretion and vote for the candidate who does his best for the club.” Over to the elections, ladies and gentlemen.

Didn't think illness would be 'that big a deal': Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton Washington: Hillary Clinton has said that she thought her falling ill at Ground Zero was not going to be “that big a deal” as she promised to resume campaigning this week amid calls for transparency into her health condition. In her first interview since she wobbled, stumbled and nearly collapsed during the 15th anniversary of 9/11 attacks in New York on Sunday, the Democratic presidential candidate said she felt dizzy and lost her balance, but did not lose consciousness, and is now “feeling so much better.” “I just did not think it was going to be that big a deal. It is just the kind of thing that if it happens to you and you are a busy, active person, you keep moving forward,” she told CNN last night. The health scare forced the 68-year-old former secretary of state to cancel campaign and fundraising trips to California and has fuelled concerns about her medical fitness less than two months to go for the November 8 election. It also prompted Republican rival Donald Trump a new opening and seek her medical record, which has remained an area of intense speculation since this was not the first time she has had issues surrounding her health condition. Previously Clinton was afflicted by an uncontrollable cough for several minutes which forced her to stop speaking during a rally in Cleveland. And in December 2013, she had to be rushed to New York’s Presbyterian Hospital after a medical scare following a fainting spell and concussion. Her campaign initially attributed Sunday’s health scare to overheating and dehydration. But later said she was diagnosed with pneumonia - an inflammatory condition of the lung. Clinton, however, tried to defend her past medical record but admitted that it was something that has occurred a few times over the course of her life. “I think it is fair to say that people know more about me than almost anyone in public life. They have got 40 years of my tax returns, tens of thousands of e- mails, a detailed medical letter report, all kinds of personal details,” she said.

Mumbai: JJ's blood separation unit still a long shot To ensure maximum utilisation of blood and cater to the increasing number of emergency cases, JJ hospital was to get the biggest blood component separation unit in 2013. Three years on, that’s yet to happen. This despite the fact that the Medical Council of India has made it mandatory that all blood banks in medical colleges should have blood separation units. RTI shocker In 2013, the state blood transfusion council decided to start a blood component separation unit in JJ Hospital to cater to the growing demand for plasma, platelets and red cells, which are life-saving components for dengue, malaria, anaemia and burns patients. However, an RTI application filed by mid-day revealed that the unit is still pending, even as essential machines worth Rs 38 lakh are lying unused in the department. The State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), in its letter dated December 26, 2013, had given its approval to start the unit, but it’s yet to, revealed the RTI application. “Every year, several litres of blood get wasted as a blood bag can be preserved only for 35 days. Through this separation unit, the hospital could have extracted the plasma, which could have saved hundreds of burns patients,” said a senior pathologist from Red Cross Society. For the unit, in 2014, the SBTC had sanctioned 10 pieces of equipment. Seven of these, worth Rs 38 lakh, are lying useless. (see box) “We had provided equipment to the hospital to start the unit in 2014 itself. It’s the hospital’s responsibility to start it,” said an SBTC official. Due to deficiency of plasma in the city, hospitals have to import it to procure its byproducts, like albumin. KEM hospital, which has a National Plasma Separation Unit, often faces shortage of plasma. In fact, the layout plan of the blood bank is still under preparation. Budget provision for infrastructure development has been sanctioned; the same for electrical renovation is in process. Hospital dean says Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ hospital, said, “It is the responsibility of NACO to establish a blood separation unit. We already have one of JJ Mahanagar blood bank on our campus, so we don’t need another. The information is wrong. (When asked if they are using the equipment provided by the SBTC) Yes, it is being used.”

59 Duterte’s anti-US rhetoric, policy jitters spook investors PRES. Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-US rhetoric, policy uncertainties and concerns of law and order are starting to spook investors notwithstanding the country’s status as Asia’s fastest growing economy, an economist from Dutch financial giant ING suggested. “Market’s perception of the political and diplomatic environment has turned for the worse. The incessant anti-US rhetoric from the new government and concerns of law and order (related to extra-judicial killings) and policy uncertainties have contributed to the guarded view of investors,” ING economist for the Philippines Joey Cuyegkeng said in a research note issued on Wednesday. Cuyegkeng also expressed concern on indications of a widening of rift between the Philippines and long-time ally US, as reported by the media. “Today’s headline continues with the perceived “anti-US” sentiment or rhetoric of government with the order for the US to remove its military personnel in Mindanao who have been present in Mindanao for years. The reason being that US military personnel would be high-value targets of the ASG (Abu Sayyaf group),” Cuyegkeng said. The economist also noted a report from the Philippine National Police that a little more than half of the almost 3000 killed during the on-going anti-illegal drugs campaign of government were under investigation and had been considered by media as vigilante killings. The other half was reportedly killed during police operations. Cuyegkeng also took note of reports that the President intentionally did not attend the US portion of last week’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit although representatives pointed to a bout of migraine. Mr. Duterte said he had skipped the Sept. 8 meeting between Asean leaders and US president Barack Obama in Laos on Sept. 8 because as president of a sovereign state, he did not want to be lectured about his war on drugs. “Recent policies have challenged the prevailing economic order too. Some may have acceptable reasons such as to encourage greater competition and bring about greater service to the consumers or to address rent- seeking activities and promote fair play and to improve inclusivity of economic growth and bring about a greater number of beneficiaries of the relatively high growth of the economy that is expected for the rest of the decade,” Cuyegkeng said. “But the policies also bring about questions of sustainability of economic activity and private investments. All these uncertainties and concerns exert greater importance in the investment decisions of local and offshore investors. These too could eventually undermine prevailing macroeconomic fundamentals as the new government puts in place a new political, diplomatic and economic order.

Moreover, the drainage system of the complex is also at the same spot and everybody would be affected if anything chokes the drain. It is also learnt that the people did not have builder’s permission for building this shed.” Another resident, Swapnil Satam, said, “Our garden area along with the basement has been in a mess since Monday night. We did not have any issue if people had celebrated the festival in their own homes. In fact, we were even ready to have a few slaughters, but bringing over 200 goats in trucks for the sacrifice in the colony premises is something that needs to be expressed beforehand. Neither the society nor the builder were informed.” The residents claimed that they were now considering a new rule to only celebrate national holidays like Independence Day and Republic Day. ‘We did no wrong’ Iqbal Khan, a member of the complex’s association, said, “We used to use an open ground for slaughtering goats, but this year, a builder began construction there. For the first time, we decided to arrange for the slaughterhouse in the complex itself. We are law-abiding citizens and it was only after the police gave us the permission that we started making the shed. We feel that festivals of all religions should be celebrated, and we have been participating in Ganpati festival as well.” “Taking care of others’ sentiments, we decided to make the shed in a corner of the society., and it was covered from all sides and on the top. We had not only informed the builder, but had also discussed this in the society meeting. However, a few residents who were present approached police after leaving from the meeting.”

Mumbai: High demand, yet no takers for new colleges? Maharashtra approved 46 colleges offering traditional courses across the state, of these 18 are affiliated to the University of Mumbai Officials at new colleges, which have been approved recently to cater to increased demand for higher education, are worried that most of the seats are going vacant due to the delay in restarting the centralised application access process for admissions. They also feel the delay in approvals for these colleges have also led to the seats going vacant. Maharashtra approved 46 colleges offering traditional courses across the state, of these 18 are affiliated to the Mumbai University. Admissions to all degree colleges affiliated to Mumbai University have to be done through online process. Hence Mumbai University has reopened the process of application. But these colleges fear going vacant in the first year as it is already September when applications have been invited. The delays “The approval was finalised in the month of August when other degree colleges had almost completed their admission process. Even lectures had begun in colleges by August. What’s the point of approving the college at this juncture when students are not able to take advantage of available seats? Now anyways most of the admissions are done. Even examinations schedules are out. Many courses have semester examination scheduled in October. We cannot expect many people to turn up to take admission in September,” said a management representative from one such college. Principal of another college said, “To get the required approval, colleges are expected to be prepared with all the arrangements from infrastructure to manpower. With vacancies, it will be difficult for managements to sustain for the year. The delay in approvals has impacted colleges to a great extent. On the other hand, government managed to claim credit of bringing new colleges in the market right at the beginning of the academic year.” “First of all the government should ensure if existing colleges are run properly before bringing in new colleges. There would obviously be marginal number of people left without admission after August as colleges begin lectures by then for degree courses,” said Pradeep Sawant, former senate member from Mumbai University. Another former senate member, Santosh Gangurde, said, “Std 12th result was declared in the month of May. How can the government wait till August to approve new colleges if they were planning to cater to the increased demand? The flipside is that colleges cannot also cry about vacancies in the first year as they are bound to happen, since the institutes are new. Even if the colleges were approved in time, there would not be many takers considering they are new colleges.” Student speak Sachin Pawar, president of Law Students Council, said, “Now only candidates applying for law are still waiting for admissions due to the chaos. That is also because there is going to be a centralised admission process that is delayed. But for other traditional courses such as Arts, Commerce, Science etc, lectures have begun long ago and students are now approaching their first semester examination.”

The in-house magazine of IIT-B – Insight – has reorted four hostels have been plagued by monkey menace. The primates pillage locked rooms and scurry away with electronic gadgets. In Kandivli a single monkey is holding residents of a housing society prisoner since September 10. According to Insight, hostels 3, 5, 7 and 9 are affected by 10 to 15 monkeys. “If we forget to lock our room, they ruin clothes and valuables. They even sleep on the beds,” the article states. Repeated complaints to the institution’s maintenance department have allegedly been ignored. “...the sole reply has been ‘don’t feed the monkeys’,” says the article. The general secretary of hostel 5 has now submitted an application to the BMC to find a solution to the menace. “Bursting crackers in wings has been recommended as a temporary solution,” the article says. A senior official from IIT-B said forest officials are called in to rescue monkeys “as and when the need arises”. The Kandivli offender Residents of NG Suncity Phase II in Kandivli Lokhandwala claim that over the last four days, a monkey keeps entering homes and climbing rafters as high as the 14th floor to steal food from refrigerators. “Children are scared. The monkey has even charged at residents several times in the last four days,” said Durgesh Wagale, a resident. “We have sought help from SGNP and Thane FD, but in vain,” said Manoj Nigam, chairman of NG Suncity Phase II. Residents said the department claims it has more than 50 calls to rescue monkeys from the eastern suburbs to be addressed before theirs. Forest department says Assistant Conservator of Forest, SJ Lachake, said, “Our team takes the best possible efforts to attend to monkey rescue calls. People should understand it is not possible to attend to each call immediately. I have instructed my staff to look into the issue.”

UP CM Akhilesh Yadav strips uncle Shivpal Yadav of key ministerial portfolios Akhilesh Yadav Lucknow: An open war broke out today in Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav stripping his uncle Shivpal Yadav of key ministerial portfolios, hours after his removal as the party's state unit chief and appointment of the latter in his place. Sharp differfences in the Yadav family came out into the open today as Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav shunted Chief Secretary Deepak Singhal, considered close to Shivpal, barely two months after his appointment, setting off a chain of developments that saw SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav ousting his son as state party chief and replacing him with Shivpal. Hours after Mulayam made his bother and senior cabinet minister the UP unit head of the ruling party, in an angry retort, Akhilesh clipped his uncle¿s wings by stripping him of the plum PWD, irrigation and cooopetative portfolios. "Singhal has been removed and put on wait list. Principal Secretary (Finance) Rahul Bhatnagar has been made new Chief Secretary," an official spokesman said here. Though no reason was cited, Samajwadi Party insiders said the Chief Minister was not happy with him as he had attended a dinner hosted by SP Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh in Delhi which Akhilesh gave a miss. Mulayam and some other top party leaders were peresent at the dinner. Differences between Akhilesh and Shivpal have been reported on several occasions, including on the choice of official to be appointed as the state's chief secretary after Alok Ranjan's term ended, and stalling of Qaumi Ekta Dal's merger with SP. Shivpal was said to have shepherded the merger of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari's QED with the Samajwadi Party. Singhal was earlier Principal Secretary (Irrigation), a department held by Shivpal. Hours after Singhal was eased out as the state's top bureaucrat, Mulayam's cousin and SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav wrote to Shivpal: "SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav has appointed you as the president of the Uttar Pradesh unit. It is hoped that with your hard work, you will further strengthen the party. " A copy of the letter was also marked to Akhilesh Yadav. Not to take it lying down, the Chief Minister immediately divested his uncle of key departments, keeping with himself the PWD portfolio and giving irrigation to minister Awadhesh Prasad and revenue and cooperatives to Balram Yadav, an official release said late tonight. Shivpal, who is now left with land development, water resources and social welfare ministries, is likely to resign from the cabinet. Though there was no official word from him, sources in the party said he was "most likely" to tender his resignation tomorrow.

Mumbai: FDA keeps a hawk-eye on KEM's faulty blood bank After Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) ordered shutting down of KEM Hospital’s blood bank due to lack of adequate manpower in June, the authority is keeping a strict watch on the hospital. On Monday, a vigilance officer from FDA visited the blood bank to check on the functioning of the bank. Another inspection will be carried out today. “We had sent a notice to the hospital after we received a complaint which said the blood bank was functioning without an adequate number of pathologists and technicians. We ordered for the bank’s closure until they fulfilled all requirements. We will visit the hospital to check on the blood bank,” said Joint Commissioner B R Masal, FDA. Stay on suspension KEM Hospital, which was served suspension orders in July, has managed to get a stay order from the FDA, which has helped stop the sudden closure of the bank. So, while the bank is up and running, the FDA is keeping a strict watch on it. All requests for stay orders go to the state FDA minister. Earlier, in FDA’s routine inspections, it was found that the hospital’s blood bank did not have enough blood transfusion officers (BTOs). As per rules of FDA, a blood bank functioning 24/7 is required to have at least three BTOs working in shifts. Also, it is mandatory that collecting and transfusing blood and its components have to be done in presence of a BTO to avoid errors. KEM says “It is a routine procedure that FDA follows in all blood banks. We are working as per FDA protocols,” said Dr Avinash Supe, KEM’s dean.

Ex-Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi applies for India Jr selector post Shishir Hattangadi Shishir Hattangadi, the former Mumbai Ranji Trophy captain and selector, has applied for the post of a junior selector to the Indian cricket board. "I am a cricket lover. I wish to contribute in any possible way. Moreover, junior cricket is like raw material where a lot of work is to be done, especially the ironing part. "Having represented Mumbai for over a decade, I have figured out my own faults and learnt from it. My strength is not what I have achieved in my career but where I have failed," the fifty five-year-old told mid-day yesterday. Hattangadi once opened the Mumbai batting with legend Sunil Gavaskar. He later played in the same Mumbai team with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. From 1981 to 1992, Hattangadi featured in 60 first-class matches scoring 3722 runs. Hattangadi observed that many cricketers did well at the junior level, but faded away due to indifferent form or lack of opportunity. "My primary focus will be rehabilitating those junior players and help them in extending their career. In the process I will be able to contribute towards the building of a talent pool for the national team," he said while offering his services to Indian cricket. According to BCCI's pre-condition, a candidate should have played more than 50 first-class matches in India to be considered for a position in the junior National selection committee. "I am not associated with any state cricket association. I was born in Kolkata, played my cricket for Mumbai and now serving outside Mumbai," said the Ahmedabad-based Hattangadi.

70 Mumbai Crime: 'MTNL' techie loots gadgets from homes Representational picture The Malad police have come across a new modus operandi used by thieves — posing as technicians from Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) and robbing whatever they can lay their hands on. On Monday, an unidentified youth, believed to be aged 25, stole laptops and other electronic gadgets from a Malad residence, in Mitesh Apartment. Sources said the flat belongs to a 52-year-old woman, Nital Loke, living with her two daughters. Loke had lodged a complaint with Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) a week ago for Internet connectivity issues. “The incident took place around 12 pm. The accused visited Loke on the pretext of checking her Internet connection, and asked for her laptop for the same,” said a source. Loke said, “When he was checking my laptop, I got a call on my landline, and I got busy with that. Only after it ended did I realise that the man was gone and so was my laptop.” “There’s a lot of sensitive information in my laptop — documents and bank details,” she added, saying she panicked and narrated the incident to her neighbour who advised her to call the police. Police sources said that the accused, before visiting Loke, had tried to gain entry to a few other flats in the same building, but no one opened the door. The accused has been captured on a CCTV camera entering and exiting the premises — he entered around 11.43 am and left at 12.10 pm. A police team, including Sub-Inspector Hasan Mulani, who is the detection officer, visited the spot and is now on the lookout for him.

Serena Williams & Co 'allowed' banned substances Serena Williams Moscow: Russian hacking group Fancy Bears' Hack Team yesterday claimed to have accessed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) database, alleging that tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams and four- time Rio Olympics gold medallist gymnast Simone Biles have been allowed to consume banned substances. The site claimed Serena was allowed to take banned substances in 2010, 2014 and 2015. The hacking site also claimed that Simone Biles failed a doping test yet avoided disqualification. "After studying of the WADA databases we figured out that dozens of American athletes had tested positive," the Fancy Bears' group claimed. "The Rio Olympic medallists regularly used illicit strong drugs justified by certificates of approval for therapeutic use," it said. "In other words they just got their licenses for doping. This is other evidence that WADA and IOC's Medical and Scientific Department are corrupt and deceitful. "

Kiwis land for big Indian test Ajinkya Rahane (right) with his coach Pravin Amre during a practice at Cricket Club of India (CCI) ahead of Test series against New Zealand in Mumbai yesterday. Pic/PTI New Delhi: India or for that matter any opposition may no longer be the mystery that it once used to be in the days of fewer Test matches and before the Indian Premier League was born. Yet like most visitors, the Kiwi captain Kane Williamson and coach Mike Hesson India consider India in India as the 'big challenge'. The 28-year-old Williamson in particular is no stranger to India, Indian cricket and the sub-continent. He made his Under-19 debut against India in New Zealand; and in 2010 a few months after playing his first earning the ODI cap against India in 2010 in a triangular series in Sri Lanka, he made his Test debut in Ahmedabad two months later and scored a century on maiden appearance. He has also played for Sunrisers in the IPL and yes, it was in India and only this year, that he took over full-time captaincy of New Zealand at the ICC World Twenty20. So, India is not really a mystery, but still a goal to achieve and bastion to conquer – no Kiwi team has won a series here and the last Test they won here was in 1988. Williamson said, "Playing India at home is one of the toughest challenges. As a team we are excited to get involved. " New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (left) with coach Mike Hesson at a press conference in New Delhi yesterday. Pic/PTI Williamson, who belongs to the elite club of only 13 players in history to have a Test century against each of the other Test-playing nations, has of late been put alongside Indian skipper Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Steve Smith as one of the leading batsmen in the world. He smiles at the comparison but heaps plaudits on his counterpart Kohli. 'Love watching Virat play' "Virat (Kohli) is a great player. The ability to dominate in all three formats like he does is something very special and certainly something that I admire. I love watching him play," Williamson said. "There are a lot of good players in the Indian team whom we will have to look out for. Virat is one of those players, against whom we have to be at our very best. " For many, Williamson may just about be coming out of the shadows of Brendon McCullum in terms of captaincy, but coach Hesson says, "He has seamlessly fitted into the big shoes of the talismanic Brendon McCullum. " Williamson was always being groomed as a future captain. When McCullum stood down or was rested, Williamson would step in. So, by the time he took over the reins full time he had fair experience. McCullum v Williamson Hence, Hesson's observation, "Seamless, I think that's the way we would like it to operate. Kane had captained 36 games before he took over full-time. Even when Brendon was captain, Kane came in during tours (as stop gap leader) and it was a seamless change. "Brendon was more high profile while Kane likes to take his own time and take a slightly back seat. " As for the upcoming three-Test series, he added, "In the previous series, spin played a huge part. At times batting was difficult. No doubt it will be bit of a scrap. We have three very good spinners as well. It will be a challenge. " Hesson admitted it was difficult to practice playing against spin before coming over, because it is not possible to replicate the spin friendly conditions of sub-continent. Williamson does hope his spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi will take inspiration of sorts from other foreign spinners to have visited India. "There have been a number of overseas spinners who done have well in these conditions. Our spin group is young and the challenge is adjusting to a different ball to 'SG Test' from 'Kookaburra'," said Hesson.

In the complaint, Jagtap had alleged that Sharma, who owns a flat in DLH Enclave on New Link Road in Goregaon, had violated norms and carried out illegal construction in the flat, police had said. Following the complaint, Sharma was booked under section 53(7) of Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act (MRTP) 1966. Sharma had kicked up a controversy last week by alleging that he had been asked to pay a bribe of Rs 5 lakh by an official of BMC which, in turn, claimed the actor had flouted norms in his Versova office building and his apartment in suburban Goregaon.

Georgia Nicols horoscopes for Sept. 14, 2016 Avoid shopping or big decisions from 10:15 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Chicago time. After that, the Moon moves from Aquarius into Pisces. A friend might surprise you today, or you might be surprised by an encounter with a friend from the past. Possibly, a group that you deal with will do something you didn’t expect. It’s a loosey-goosey day with unpredictable elements! Expect a few surprises today when dealing with parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs and the police. They might do something that catches you off guard, or possibly you will surprise them? Don’t quit your day job. And be aware that today, people notice you. Travel plans will be interrupted, canceled or rescheduled. Ditto for schedules with schools. Things are up for grabs today because it’s a Moon Alert during Mercury retrograde. Just go with the flow, but hang on to your handlebars. Today is unpredictable because for most of the day, it’s a Moon Alert on top of Mercury retrograde. Mucho loose ends! That’s why today is a poor day for financial decisions, especially regarding inheritances, shared property and shared responsibilities. Just coast. You have to accommodate people today, which means going more than halfway when dealing with others. Quite likely a close friend or partner will surprise you by doing or saying something unexpected. Or they might demand more freedom in the relationship. (“Whaaat?”) It’s been willy-nilly with Mercury retrograde taking place in your sign: mixed- up communications, misplaced paperwork, travel delays and bumping into people from your past. At least, life isn’t boring! Today your efficiency at work will be challenged. Oh well, just cope as best you can. What else can you do? Your dealings with children as well as social plans and matters related to sports are up for grabs today. (Yes, it’s a constantly changing landscape.) Just accept this and go with the flow. Note: Keep an eye on your kids because this is a mildly accident-prone day for them. You have been popular lately and you’ve encountered friends from the past, all of which puts demands on your time and busy schedule. That’s why today, you like the idea of cocooning at home or hiding. (“Can you hear me now?”) Unfortunately, even that will be interrupted! (Is there no justice?) You have lots of energy with fiery Mars in your sign, which is why you must grab every opportunity to get physical exercise and be active. Today there are a lot of unpredictable elements. New faces, new places, canceled appointments and surprise meetings are par for the course. Keep your eyes open today because something unexpected will impact your cash flow, your money and your possessions. For example, you might find money or you might lose money. Ditto for something you own. Don’t shop during the Moon Alert for anything other than food and gas. Today the Moon is in your sign dancing with your ruler Uranus. This gives you lots of energy and makes you inventive and spontaneous! You might meet new friends or discover something unusual. Stay light on your feet so that you can flow with unexpected changes taking place around you. You feel restless today. One thing that has possibly caught you off guard is surprising news from ex-partners and ex-spouses. We always expect things to stay the same in life but that’s an illusion, isn’t it? The only constant in life is change. Actor Andrew Lincoln (1973) shares your birthday today. You are kind, helpful and understanding. People like your spirited optimism and charm. You also have excellent analytical skills in categorizing things. Take advantage of opportunities that present themselves this year because this is the year you’ve been waiting for. Expect a major change, perhaps as significant as what occurred around 2006. It’s time to test your future!

Out on bail, ex-India player with criminal record, Jacob Martin, made Ranji coach Jacob Martin. Pic/mid-day archives At a time when the Supreme Court of India is trying to clean up the mess and bring about transparency in the way the Indian cricket board functions, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) seems to have taken a backward step by appointing former India international cricketer Jacob Martin as their Ranji Trophy team's coach. A few Baroda senior players and BCA officials felt Martin's appointment as coach is completely against the Lodha Panel recommendations. They pointed to BCCI's criteria for selectors which bars anybody with a criminal record from applying for the job. Martin (44) played all his international games overseas with a highest score of 39 against Pakistan in Perth during the 1999-2000 season. Also Read: Arrested in 2011 for human trafficking, BCCI pays tainted Jacob Martin one-time grant "How can someone who has spent time in Tihar Jail and whose case for which he was convicted, still pending be appointed as the Ranji Trophy coach? BCCI's 'no criminal record' rule should also hold true for coaches and other office bearers," said a senior player in the Baroda team. "This is completely unethical," said another official, adding, "He may have been a very good cricketer, but he hasn't been a law-abiding citizen. BCA has set a bad example by appointing him as coach. There are so many senior cricketers in Baroda who could easily have occupied the post. " Martin was arrested in Delhi in 2009 in connection with a 2003 human- trafficking case that was registered at the Indira Gandhi International Airport police station. It was alleged that Martin had taken a youngster named Nimesh Kumar with a fake passport to the UK on the pretext of playing cricket in exchange for money. Kumar later disclosed that his trip to the UK was arranged by Martin with the help of another associate for a sum of Rs 7 lakh. "Martin formed a bogus team — Ajwa Sports Club — and identified himself as a playing member," the then Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, RA Sanjeev, was quoted as saying by PTI. The report also said that Martin was repeatedly asked to assist the investigation but he refused and subsequently the Supreme Court rejected an anticipatory bail plea filed by Martin and asked him to surrender. The Delhi Police also announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone who would provide information about him. In April 2011, Martin was arrested from Babarpur area of Shahadra in the national capital and was sent to judicial custody. His bail plea was dismissed repeatedly saying "no relief can be granted to him as he was running away from law" and that "the allegation against him was serious and he has done a disservice to the game which is close to the hearts of millions". Martin, who was also an employee of the Indian Railways was also dismissed from service after his arrest. When contacted by mid-day, the secretary to the Lodha panel, Gopal Shankar Narayanan said: "No chance that someone with such a record can be appointed coach. " However, BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke said, "The matter pertains to a state association and BCCI doesn't influence decisions of its members, especially relating to cricket. " Revival Group member Snehal Parikh, who is the secretary in-charge of the BCA after the management sacked sitting president Samarjitsinh Gaekwad during the AGM in July didn't answer calls and text messages. Read Story: Jacob Martin arrested in human trafficking case A message from advocate Subhash and Seema Gulati, who are handling Martin's case in Delhi High Court said, "Yes, the Delhi Police arrested Martin for something which he didn't commit. He was however sent to judicial custody but there was no concrete evidence to press charge against him and he is now out on bail. No charge sheet has been filed in this case too. We filed a revised petition against the charges and now the discharge application is pending in Delhi High Court. This will come up for hearing very soon. " Martin said, "I have full faith in the law and I am sure that I will come out clean. I just want dedicate the rest of my life to the game and nothing else. " A senior BCA cricketer who has represented India for a considerable length of time and who also held a high position in the BCCI, said on condition of anonymity. "People with criminal history are MPs and ministers. What is the harm if he becomes a coach? Mind you, he hasn't been proved guilty yet. He is a cricketer so let him do what he does best. "

Dear Abby: Woman too shy to meet cute guys How do I strike up a pleasant conversation with a cute guy at the gym or a friendly customer at work? It looks easy in the movies, but this is real life. I don’t want my awkwardness to hold me back. At the gym, ask other members about their routine or the machines they’re using. When greeting a customer, lead off with a friendly remark or a compliment. I have met very few people who don’t like receiving one, as long as it’s sincere. (“Nice shirt,” “Nice cellphone,” etc.) If you freeze up, keep in mind that the majority of people have the same insecurities that you do. My booklet “How to Be Popular” contains many useful tips for polishing social skills for people of all ages. It can be ordered by sending your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 (U. S. funds), to Dear Abby Popularity Booklet, P. O. Box 447, Mount Morris, IL 61054-0447. Shipping and handling are included in the price. Please allow four to six weeks for delivery. A surefire way to contribute in any social situation is to be well-informed about what’s going on in the world. You do not have to be an authority on every subject. Good conversationalists are interested in what others have to say rather than feel pressured to fill the air with the sound of their own voices. And remember: Most people can concentrate on only one thing at a time. So forget about yourself and concentrate on the OTHER person. Ask about what he or she is interested in. If you try it, you’ll find that it works. Basically, he is what every woman wants. But … he is lacking in the sex department. He had a groin injury as a child, and later, as an adult, he reinjured “it.” Viagra doesn’t help. He apologizes when sex lasts less than five or 10 minutes. Sometimes “it” doesn’t work for a week or two. He says he loves me and wants to marry me. But I know I wouldn’t be completely happy if I married him. On the other hand, I’m afraid to lose such a good man. If there is, your problem is solved. If there isn’t, then you will have to prioritize what’s really important to you in a life partner.

80 Mumbai: Ignored for 11 hours by 3 hospitals, woman and unborn child die Meenatai Thackeray officials told the woman no bed was available. But mid-day found the ward empty the next day A 25-year-old woman, in her eighth month of pregnancy, collapsed and died on September 11 after being shunted across three hospitals. She was registered for childbirth at a civic-run hospital in Nerul, but was refused admission on the grounds that there was no bed available. mid-day, however, found that the officials had tried to cover up the absence of a gynaecologist with that lie. Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul refused admission, citing shortage of beds On September 9, the expectant mother and resident of Sanpada, Pinky Chavan, developed pain in the abdomen and began coughing, too. Her family, suspecting that her delivery was due, took her to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation-run Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Sector 15 of Nerul, where she had been registered for childbirth. “The doctor there suspected that she was showing early signs of a heart attack and also refused admission, citing shortage of beds in the maternity ward. The doctor advised us to take her to a civic body-run hospital in Vashi,” said Pinky’s uncle, Shivaji Chavan. Turned away a second time The family, instead, took her home after the pain subsided. But by evening, Pinky again began complaining of abdominal pain. “We took her to a Vashi corporation-run hospital. The doctor advised immediate admission, but turned us away, citing the same reason of non-availability of beds. We were then referred to DY Patil Hospital in Nerul,” said Shivaji. Spooked by high bills When the family rushed Pinky to DY Patil Hospital, the on-duty doctor told them categorically that the hospital bills could run up Rs 60,000-70,000 and recommended that they take her to the state-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai Central. “We sell balloons for a living. Yet, we said we could rustle up R25,000, but the doctor still referred us to JJ Hospital,” said Shivaji. Also Read: Thane: Woman delivers on street after civic hospital denies entry; child dies All through the ordeal, at no point was the family offered the services of 108 ambulance — mandatory in such cases. “We had to arrange for a vehicle of our own to take her to JJ Hospital. By the time we managed to get a vehicle of our own, it was past 3 am on September 10,” alleged the uncle. Collapsed at JJ The family pulled into JJ Hospital an hour and a half later. But their tragedy had just begun to unfold. There, the family was told that there was no doctor available since it was a Sunday. Around 5 am, Pinky claimed to be feeling better and asked for food. “We offered her milk and some biscuits, and then we stepped out for some tea. Soon after, some relatives who were keeping an eye on her told us that she collapsed and was taken to the cardiac care unit,” said Shivaji. The hospital staff assured the family that once she regained consciousness, a C-section would be performed to save the child. But at 5 pm, the family’s lives crumbled when they found out that both Pinky and her child had not survived. Doctors blamed myocardial infarction (heart attack) for her death. A case of accidental death was registered at the JJ Marg police station, and the body sent to JJ Hospital’s post-mortem centre on Monday. The final cause of death will be revealed only after the hystopathology and viscera findings are in. Baby could have been saved A forensic surgeon at JJ, however, said the baby could have been saved had a timely C-section been performed. “The baby, a boy, weighed over 2 kg,” and was healthy enough to survive. Read Story: Shocking: Denied admission, pregnant woman dies of dengue The autopsy surgeon found that Pinky had an enlarged liver and red patches around her heart, which indicate some underlying ailment. Dr YS Nandanwar, professor and head of the department of obstetrician and gynaecology, LTMG Hospital, said if there are chances of saving a baby, C-sections can be performed prior to completion of the full term of pregnancy.

At 43, after 18 Grand Slams, Leander Paes wants to learn from Rafael Nadal Leander Paes during a practice session ahead of the Davis Cup tie against Spain. Pic/ PTI New Delhi: There is a tennis legend on each side. On one side is Rafael Nadal, a four- time Davis Cup winner with Spain, seeking to power his country back into World Group and hopefully a fifth Cup. And on the other side is the Indian legend Leander Paes, who takes great pride in his Davis Cup record. Other members of the Indian team, Saketh Myneni, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal will be fortunate to see a master class unfold on either side of the net. Rafa hungry for more Like Paes, the 30-year-old Nadal takes pride in representing his country. "I have been playing in the Davis Cup since I was 17. It is a special feeling to represent your country and there have been some great moments. We had some great success, but we want more," Nadal said. While Nadal, who confessed he 'has been lucky' to play against some of the legends of the game, has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles. And now that he is fit again, he hopes to add few more. But there is Davis Cup before all that. Paes has featured in 53 Davis Cup ties and has an incredible 90 wins (48 in singles and 42 in doubles) in 123 ties. He is tied with Italian Nicola Pietrangeli for the all-time record of 42 doubles wins, and a victory this week will put him all by himself atop the peak. Shrugging off his own legendary status, Paes said, "If I was a youngster, I would be here everyday and watch the 14-time Grand Slam champion. For me, even now, at this stage of my career, where I have played for 30 years, you can learn from Rafa. "You can learn about the footwork, about the power, the generation of shots, the follow through, the swing and his rituals after the practice and so on," he adds. Just as Spain seeks to get back to World Group, India are also seeking a place in the elite World Group for the third consecutive year but again they are almost certain to remain in the Asia/Oceania zone. Formidable Spain Paes is aware of Spain's formidability and getting past them will be virtually impossible, yet he gives it another twist. "It's all about perspective. You have to be realistic. You have to look at the extended group, whether singles or doubles. In singles we've always had one single player. On the whole, we have improved," he remarked. Despite his non-playing captain Anand Amritraj offering a different view, Paes defended the decision to play Spain under floodlights. Paes contends that players like Nadal and David Ferrer cannot be beaten by heat as they can slug it out for hours in tough conditions.

Internships can be a game-changer in weak jobs market The finance minister emphasised yesterday that, although the economy is not in recession, we need to do things ''spectacularly differently" over the next year to transform the ''small green shoots'' now manifesting into rapid, sustainable economic growth. Gordhan is correct. Growth of 2%, or even 3%, is achievable in the medium term with the right economic policies and, we must add, in light of the appalling campaign to undermine the Treasury, the right politics. GDP growth of 3% will not reduce joblessness sufficiently to meet the National Development Plan's targets but it would be a great start. The rapprochement between the government, business and labour that Gordhan is leading to ignite growth, create jobs and avert a downgrade is our best shot. The minister outlined an exciting initiative yesterday that involves the government and business teaming up to place thousands of young people in one-year internships. A large-scale internship programme would make a sizable dent in youth unemployment which, at about 50%, is this country's most pressing problem. For the beneficiaries, a year of job experience would make a world of difference, greatly enhancing their chances of remaining employed and moving up in life. The programme differs from the youth employment tax incentive which, despite criticism by the unions, has been an unqualified success in a shrinking jobs market. The incentive, which encourages employers, through tax breaks, to employ young people, was claimed for 134,923 jobs in 2014 and for 686,402 jobs in 2015, and will be renewed. Gordhan's point that we can turn the corner only by doing things differently cannot be stressed enough.

Best football coach in world The occasion was a Fifa free-for-all ahead of the 2010 World Cup where reporters were promised interviews with coaches, then discovered it was like trying to intercept survivors fleeing a burning building to get their comments on the fire. I had vainly hoped for an exclusive with Fabio Capello. Nothing doing. The French and Mexican coaches, whose teams were in Bafan Bafana's group, either did not arrive or were too aloof, as with Raymond Domenech. Perhaps the French coach knew what awaited him at the tournament - a player mutiny, dismal performances and even defeat by Bafana Bafana. The Fifa fixer offered Tabarez, but there was one problem: the man spoke no English and I no Spanish. No problemo. A Mexican journalist named Alfredo volunteered to interpret. Alfredo was fluent in Spanish and English, and translated my questions and Tabarez's answers. Tabarez was asked some dumb-ass questions that football coaches have to put up with every week of the season. Nevertheless, he patiently gave long and detailed answers, possibly providing essential background to a reporter who he must have realised had not a clue about Uruguayan football. Alfredo's translations, however, were brief and without substance. "Alfredo," I asked him. "He seems to be saying more than what you're telling me? " "Archieee," Alfredo replied, his patience strained. "He talk a lot. He don't say much. " Even if he did talk a lot and not say much, it was soon clear that Tabarez knew a bit. You don't last long as a football manager in South America without knowing a lot, and Tabarez has had two stints as the Uruguay boss, the first between 1988 and 1990 and the latest, which started in 2006. He has taken the team to every World Cup that coincided with the two terms, reaching the last 16 twice and the semifinals here in 2010. Ten years in the same job is a lifetime for a South American coach and Uruguay is a proud football nation, having won two World Cups and 22 international titles - more than any other country. It goes without saying that Uruguay don't tolerate doppies, like some nations we won't mention. A week ago Uruguay went to the top of the South American group for the 2018 World Cup qualifying, a notable achievement in the most competitive and unpredictable of all six of the Fifa confederations. With 10 matches still to play in a tight group, in which only five points separate the top seven, anything can still happen, but Tabarez looks on course for another World Cup. The man they call El Maestro is no stranger to the pressure that top of the pile brings. He's managed in more World Cup games - 47 - than any other and all with the same team. In our fixation with England's Premier League, Europe's Champions League and three teams in the PSL, Tabarez is never in the picture, but according to those who have been watching the South American qualifiers, the football is of a far higher standard and the excitement is unmatched. Forget the assorted Tinkermen whose names and clichéd quips are familiar to us, the best football manager in the world may be someone most of us can't even understand.

The Post Office’s future is in jeopardy – a strike is the only option T his Thursday, thousands of Communication Workers Union members will go on strike from the Post Office in a dispute over job losses, the closure of their pension scheme and the very future of the industry. While the scale of what our members are fighting is stark – with 2,000 job losses this year alone – the truth is that over the past five years they have endured a relentless programme of cuts and closures and the Post Office has become a case study in the limitations of austerity-era thinking. Showing greater concern for the commercial interests of potential buyers than the future of a public service, the government split the Post Office from Royal Mail in 2012. This kept it in public ownership while the Royal Mail was privatised, fattening up a successful business the government went on to sell at a knockdown price. While the Post Office faced the challenges of being separated from the profitable mail business, the government also decided to start systematically scaling back the Post Office’s public funding. With no strategy to grow its revenues, the cost-cutting has had predictable results. Take the flagship Crown post offices as an example. In 2014 there were more than 370 of these branches across the UK in prominent high-street locations. They are the largest offices, with highly trained staff, and are perfectly positioned to make it a major player in banking and other services. But instead of modernisation, we have seen the decimation of this part of the network. By the end of the year the Post Office will have closed down more than 100 of these branches, with more likely to follow. Services have been outsourced to retailers such as WH Smith, which has installed a Post Office counter at the back of some of its stores. For the public this means a significantly worse service and the loss of a community asset – and for staff the impact is equally dire. These retailers don’t want to match the terms and conditions the Post Office has paid its employees – and the income the Post Office counter offers the retailers wouldn’t cover this even if they did. So the Post Office is using tens of millions of pounds to pay off long-serving staff to leave, so they can be replaced with part-time workers on the minimum wage. The Post Office points to its profit margin and a reduction in public funding to justify this. But here’s the crux of the issue: having received £2bn from the government over seven years , it’s not unreasonable to expect the board of the company to have come up with more than a glorified closure programme that delivers savings in the short term. Given the uncertainty over the Post Office’s traditional income, it needs to innovate and grow in new areas if it is to have a future. Indeed, the scaled-back service that is emerging is far from the vision that was presented to the public originally. In 2010 the government pledged to make the Post Office a “genuine front office” for its services to bring in new revenue, but it has never delivered on this pledge. The Post Office’s income from government services today is 40% lower than it was six years ago. Similarly, we were told that growing revenues from financial services would be essential to the Post Office’s future. Six years on this hasn’t become the case, and the same problems we highlighted then are still holding it back: it has no current account (beyond a long-running pilot scheme), no business account and no children’s account to build a customer base for the future. Our members are under no illusions about the wider trends in society and the postal industry that impact upon them. But there is no reason for the UK to have set out to become the world leader in decline in response to these. In 2006 the French government launched La Banque Postale through its post office network. It has a mandate to encourage sustainable development, tackle financial exclusion and promote social and affordable housing. It has strong links with local government, not-for-profits and mutuals – and last year it made a profit of over €1bn. Meanwhile, our Post Office not only lacks any positive strategy for the future, it is also adopting the worst practices of British business towards its staff. Perhaps taking Philip Green as its inspiration, it is seeking to close part of its pension plan and telling staff the benefits they have built up are at risk. This is despite it being the best-funded scheme in the country and having a surplus of over £130m. Or perhaps it’s looking to model itself on Sport Direct. Faced with the current industrial dispute, the Post Office is victimising trade union representatives by threatening them with compulsory redundancy and offering staff payments of £3,000 and upwards not to go on strike. The government must recognise that the Post Office is in urgent need of new thinking. Our members striking this Thursday have a simple demand: we want a pause in the current cuts and a proper series of talks with the government and the Post Office, to formulate a strategy that will safeguard it for the future. The government has talked about having an industrial strategy for this country. It’s time for it to show that it’s serious.

Paralympians stun Olympic gold medallist Algeria's Abdellatif Baka claimed victory in the T13 1500m - but incredibly the first four athletes were all faster than American Matthew Centrowitz, who won the gold medal at the Olympics last month. Baka set a world record of 3min 48.29secs for victory, more than 1.7secs faster than Centrowitz. But the Algerian was not the only one to better that of the Olympic field in a T13 class, which caters for visually impaired competitors. Tamiru Demisse of Ethiopia took silver in a time of 3:48.49, while Henry Kirwa of Kenya finished with bronze in 3:49.59. Fouad Baka, meanwhile, the brother of the gold medallist, finished outside the medals but clocked 3:49.84 - again ahead of the Olympic Games gold time. "It wasn't easy to get this gold medal," champion Baka said. "I've been working one or two years nonstop. " One reason for the faster times at the Paralympics is that the 1500m, like any distance race, has as much to do with tactics as speed. In the case of the Olympic event, no one took an early lead and the lead group was content to stay together until the final 500m, when the runners began to speed up, with Centrowitz proving the quickest finisher. There are two other categories for visual impairment - the T11 and T12 - with the lower numbers indicating more severe impairment.

Chiefs must show they're not losers This can only happen to the "Giants of Naturena", who are under scrutiny more than any other team in the country. There are teams that would get away with losing two opening Premier Soccer League matches, but the manner of the defeats against Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City has unnerved the Chiefs faithful. They may have conceded only three goals but their spirit-lessness in attack and their lack of resolution will have the fans on edge. Tonight's clash against Platinum Stars at the FNB Stadium becomes of utmost importance for Steve Komphela's men as they seek to arrest their slide. PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns will begin defence of their title when they travel to KwaZulu-Natal to take on Maritzburg United tonight. The Brazilians missed out last month because they had to play in Nigeria in the African Champions League. Tonight's match is the first in defence of the title they won last year and if past statistics are anything to go by, they should win ... but only just. Since the PSL was launched 20 years ago, the defending champions have won 10 out of 19 times in their first match of the season following their title success for a win percentage of just over 50%.

The NCAA is sick and tired of 'empowerment' advertising Women athletes are done with ads telling them to be empowered, according to a new ad from the NCAA and SS+K. “Done” features award- winning and professional athletes, including Misty May Treanor, Natalie Coughlin Hall, Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike, to drive home the point that female athletes are powerful because they work hard and have been for years, not because ads tell them to. The athletes in the ad turn to the camera in the middle of doing tasks like taking batting practice, swimming laps, working with weights, playing soccer and more and say “Enough,” “I’m over it,” and “done.” It’s meant to imply that all we have to do to recognize strong female athletes is to watch them perform. “We shouldn’t need commercials to tell us we’re powerful,” said Treanor in the ad. All the professional athletes in the spot are successes as both graduates and athletes, and the NCAA helped them achieve their goals. The ad was done in response to the trend of “empowerment” ads that build up girls and women by first making them seem weak and set upon. “The flip side of an ad that says ‘women do anything’ is that you're saying you believed they couldn't,” says Alyssa Georg, senior art director at SS+K. “We’re pointing out that women have already reached the top of sports.” Still, the ad, with its show of strength with these athletes, is in itself empowering by displaying their power and successes. That may be partly the point, by saying no to “empowering” ads with one that actually is empowering without being condescending. The ad is the latest in a series of PSAs SS+K has created for the NCAA since July 2015, which have included athletes such as Billie Jean King and Shaquille O’Neal, to correct misperceptions about sports. The most recent ad, “ 2% ,” features NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and points out that 98% of NCAA athletes never go pro, never sign shoe contracts. But they get something more important: a college education.

California tech CEO spearheads #Never Trump app to target battleground states A San Francisco-based company launched a #NeverTrump app this week dedicated to defeating Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The networking app company Trimian, whose CEO and founder Amit Kumar was formerly with Yahoo, geared the app toward California users but hopes that the sentiment will build momentum across the voting public, according to a report in Recode. #NeverTrump is a low-frills bit of programming that Kumar’s team built in a week with input from Zach Coelius, a tech investor who used to run a voting nonprofit aimed at students, the article states. By using the app, Californians can find contacts they know in battleground states throughout the country and send them targeted messages encouraging them to vote. The app also can help users organize political fundraisers and meetups. Kumar, who is from India and views Trump as an 'existential threat' to the country, stated on his website that the app is intended to "help others channel their frustration positively" and spread the word and help save America. " The #NeverTrump app is just the latest in a series of attacks Silicon Valley has lobbed against the Republican nominee. On Thursday Facebook co- founder Dustin Moskovitz pledged $20m to help beat Trump. Last month venture capital firm Charles River Ventures displayed a big “F*ck Trump” banner prominently on its home page. And in July about 150 tech CEOs, investors and others in the industry signed an open letter calling the prospect of a Trump victory a “disaster for innovation.” In a scathing letter, many Silicon Valley CEOs, investors and well-known tech figures (like Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak,) slammed Trump. "Trump's vision stands against the open exchange of ideas, free movement of people, and productive engagement with the outside world that is critical to our economy — and that provide the foundation for innovation and growth," the leaders wrote. Notably, the list doesn’t include CEOs or other top executives from the biggest tech companies, like Google or Microsoft.

Nike Color Rush uniforms to be friendlier to colorblind viewers Last year’s monochromatic uniforms had some serious pop on the field for most viewers. The matchups last November featured plenty of vibrant colors from the eight teams that wore them, including a Tampa Bay-St. Louis game that looked like ketchup and mustard got into a colorful fight. The problem for some viewers – those with colorblindness – was that they couldn’t distinguish which team was which. To rectify that problem, Nike, who makes the Vapor Untouchable uniforms, is giving options to some teams to wear all white to contrast with their opposition. This year, Nike came up with Color Rush uniforms for all 32 clubs in the NFL , but some teams will have to wait until 2017 to wear theirs on Thursday Night Football, the day the uniforms will be featured, except for Thanksgiving. The change to white uniforms for some teams came from complaints by colorblind viewers, so Nike and the NFL, according to a report by ESPN’s Darren Rovell, consulted with doctors from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York to review the matchups and determine which would be problems for those with colorblindness. The New York Jets will be one team in all white this Thursday, playing the Buffalo Bills who will be in all red. Last year’s matchup between the two resulted in one of the games deemed problematic by colorblind viewers last year. Other teams opting for all white, or having to wear all white because their Color Rush colors clash with their opponents, include the Cleveland Browns, the LA Rams, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. The Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions will not wear their Color Rush uniforms because of the Thanksgiving rule. Regardless of the on-field television issues, Nike will sell each team’s chosen color at retail and all proceeds will benefit the NFL Foundation, funding youth health, safety and wellness programs. The first $500,000 raised will be earmarked to replace youth and high school football equipment and fields lost during the recent flooding in Louisiana.

No walk in the Park as old archrivals duel But Highlands have Tapuwa Kapini to thank for their three points. The Zimbabwean goalkeeper saved two penalties that would on any other night have been converted. A raucous crowd, along with two brass bands, made Highland Parks' return to the Premier Soccer League an unforgettable one. The game was pushed along by referee Victor Gomes' new-found ability to let a game flow. He was correct in awarding the visitors a seventh-minute penalty when Rethabile Soso was brought down. However, he incurred the ire of the home supporters as most of his 50/50 calls tended to go Baroka's way. Nyasha Munetsi coolly converted the first spot kick, heralding a period of Baroka dominance that should have resulted in more goals. Highlands had a few chances but when they had one in the 32nd minute, Mbesuma was on hand to deflect Franklin Cale's free kick. There was high drama in the 42nd minute when Gomes awarded Baroka a penalty after Zamuxolo Ngalo had handled Sipho Moeti's shot. Kapini's guess was spot-on and he stretched far to his right to smother Munetsi's well-taken penalty. The visitors were punished for Munetsi's mistake 11 minutes into the second half when Mashumba finished off a shot. Gomes gave Baroka another penalty in the 70th minute for an unclear offence. If the penalty was dubious, Kapini made sure justice was served with another save - this time from captain Olaleng Shaku, as the visitors seemingly forgot how to take penalties. Orlando Pirates livewire Tendai Ndoro scored two quick goals in the first half to give the Soweto giants a 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town at Cape Town Stadium last night. Nathan Paulse scored a consolation goal for the hosts. In Polokwane, Limpopo, Polokwane City put the skids on Bidvest Wits when they held them to a goalless draw, also last night.

Two bodies recovered‚ but family members insist more zama zamas still trapped underground Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said: “They led a group of rescue teams to the spot in the mine they seemed to know well. “The two bodies were brought up. We don’t think those were the last of the trapped miners because family members on the scene insist that there are more people trapped in there. " The two men brought to the surface on Tuesday were named as Sibangani Tsikwa‚ 24‚ and Njabulo Sibanda‚ 31. On Tuesday‚ TMG Digital reported that a group of about 20 illegal miners‚ including a relative of one of the zama zamas‚ was preparing to go down the disused mine shaft to rescue or recover some of their trapped colleagues. Mandla Sibanda accompanied the group to look for his brother who was believed to be one of the two still trapped underground. Official rescue operations conducted by the Mine Rescue Services remained suspended on Tuesday following the recovery of a miner's body and another injured miner late on Monday. Several miners have emerged on their own or been rescued since the recovery operations started on Sunday but they were later arrested. Sibanda said a sangoma‚ who had been advising the families and friends of the trapped miners since the incident‚ had told them that at least one member of the affected families should also join the rescue team established by the zama zamas. “I know I'm risking a lot by going there. I'm scared too but I'm just taking the instructions from a person that knows better than I do. I hope that me going down will help retrieve those that are still trapped underground‚” Sibanda said as he strapped on his homemade mining gear. The group carried bags with food and batteries while others drank Mageu‚ a nutritious beverage‚ before they descended. “We are not sure of what awaits us but we will do our best to bring our comrades to the surface‚” said another illegal miner. At around 11am‚ two illegal miners surfaced but it soon emerged that they were from a different group that had gone underground two weeks ago. – TMG Digital/Sowetan

95 Mugabe 'must be allowed to exercise his freedom of expression' Harare - President Robert Mugabe 's critics say he denies them freedom of expression but what about allowing the longtime president the right to exercise his? That's the contorted argument being put forward in the star letter of Tuesday's Herald newspaper in Zimbabwe - and it demonstrates the lengths to which Mugabe supporters will go to defend a leader who is coming under the kind of pressure he's never previously seen during his 36 years in power. Reacting to widespread criticism from activists at the president's attack on the judiciary earlier this month, letter- writer "John Sigauke" says Mugabe, 92, merely "expressed his opinion" and was exercising his own right to freedom of expression. "President Mugabe still has a constitutional right to freedom of expression and opinion. He is still a human being like anybody else," the letter reads. Pro-Mugabe stance Earlier this month Mugabe said Zimbabwe judges who'd given the go- ahead to protests were "negligent" and "reckless". Churches and opposition officials have demanded he retract those statements. There has long been a suspicion that Herald letters are written in-house or at least by members of Mugabe's Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), since all printed correspondence to the paper reflects its overwhelmingly pro-Mugabe stance. A quick Google search for "John Sigauke" shows he's crossed swords with reporters in the private press before. He is also named as the author of pro- Zanu-PF columns on local news website Bulawayo24. "Being a president of Zimbabwe... does not take away the president's rights to express his personal opinion," says "Sigauke". Mugabe insists the West is behind the current wave of on and off-line protests. Social media users in Zimbabwe have noticed a surge in the number of accounts set up by apparent Mugabe apologists, while many fear the proliferation of empty "egg" accounts reflects a new drive by the CIO to monitor Zimbabweans online.

Beware Facebook robbers‚ say police Issuing to a warning to the public‚ the South African Police Service's Captain FC van Wyk said the crime highlighted the dangers of responding to social media adverts. Describing how the crime unfolded‚ he said a 23-year- old man from Grassy Park in Cape Town saw a Facebook post last week about someone selling a Volkswagen Golf for R25‚000. "The Facebook post seemed to be legitimate‚ with pictures and a description of the car. " The interested buyer made contact with the potential seller and they agreed to meet at an address in Greatfish Road‚ Manenberg. "When the prospective buyer and his two college friends arrived at Greatfish Road‚ the address on the advertisement could not be found and he was directed to a house further down the road. When they got to the other address‚ two men just got into the car. The one man pulled out a firearm and threatened the 23-year-old victim and his friends. The suspects took their cell phones and R80 in cash‚ robbing them of a total value of R2‚500. The victim and his friends were forced to drive around in Manenberg until they managed to drop off the suspects in Jordan Road. " Detective Constable Joshua Williams investigated the case‚ arresting two suspects‚ aged 27 and 53 years old‚ for robbery with a firearm. They appeared in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on Tuesday. Capt van Wyk said: "The young people involved in the incident were fortunate to escape unharmed‚ because so many bad things could have happened to them". "The SAPS appeals to community members‚ when seeing an advert on social media‚ to make enquiries to establish and verify the legitimacy of the so-called sale. This may prevent another serious crime from being committed. "

Boost for youth jobs This is according to Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who suggested radical "change" was needed to break the back of youth unemployment. Gordhan was speaking to members of the investment community at the inaugural BDFM summit held in Sandton yesterday. After a year of work experience young people were more likely to remain in the economy and be able to get jobs, he said. Gordhan said many ordinary people felt excluded from economic growth. "Growth is no longer the panacea. Citizens are impatient with the government and the elite. " He urged the business leaders to focus on "inclusivity". "Think about ... what we could do to make people part of the economy. " Workforce management group Adcorp's labour law expert John Botha said the project Gordhan was referring to was one in which business had been challenged to create 100,000 youth internships by 2020, taking in young people for a year at a time. "Once a person has had 12 months of temporary work through Adcorp they have a 30% chance of remaining employed," he said. Botha said the youth jobs project was "not a legislated initiative such as the youth wage subsidy". "This is a social partnership similar to the #CEO Sleepout. " Speaking at the summit, Gordhan said he believed there was a more than 50% chance the country would not be downgraded by ratings agencies later this year. "On the balance there are those difficulties but there are positive things that are working in this country. We need to highlight them. " He warned, however, that the surprising economic growth of 3.3% in the second quarter could not be sustained and pledged continued fiscal prudence, a key recommendation by ratings agencies. "The next year or so is quite critical, not just for ratings but for ourselves as an economy and as a country as well," Gordhan said, adding that sustainable growth would only be achieved if South Africa did things "spectacularly differently". "We ourselves are not in recession territory. We have interesting small green shoots in different parts of the economy. "If we nurture those shoots in the right kind of way . we can certainly get back to 2% and 3% growth over the next few years. I'm an optimist by nature," he said. In what was likely a reference to the Hawks, who have summoned Gordhan to answer questions about his involvement in an alleged SARS rogue unit, Gordhan said institutions needed to be credible. "In order for all of this [economy to grow] to work, we require the institutions of our country - both constitutional and otherwise - to have the right kind of expertise, the right kind of skills and the right kind of credibility and integrity. "

Ranjona Banerji: Religious tyranny of food in India Gau Raksha Dal members inspect a truck on a highway in Rajasthan while looking for beef smugglers. File Pic/AFP In Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, the writer and professor of journalism searches, as the cover says, “for a perfect meal in a fast-food world”. He is excoriatingly honest in this search, as he examines the moral and ethical questions of food habits, trends, choices and taboos. Had Pollan based this book in India and not in the United States, he would have had to focus on the religious tyranny of food. This tyranny seems to have increased since the current BJP government has come to power at the Centre and in several states, but, in fact, it has always existed. We, as Indians, sometimes pride ourselves on our ‘tolerance’ but we are extremely intolerant of each other’s food habits. All over Mumbai, there are exclusive vegetarian housing societies where the very sight of an egg can send a resident into paroxysms of rage. And consider that in Gujarat, a lawyer has filed a case against Niantic, the creator of the currently popular virtual reality game Pokemon Go, for virtual eggs being located in Hindu temples. Blasphemy, he has cried. Eggs are apparently antithetical to the very foundation of Hinduism. There is no point discussing either facts or logic here. Each community which has its food taboos and food phobias is paranoid about being ‘polluted’ by someone else. This paranoia knows no limits as believers will go to any lengths to protect their ideas of what other people should or should not eat. There is no shame, no remorse, no compassion and no respect. There is only hatred and rage that narrow rules are being ‘flouted’. Often, extreme vegetarianism in India has nothing to do with animal rights or the treatment of animals. There are animal hospitals set up by religious trusts which will not treat ‘non-vegetarian’ animals, thus imposing their own religious taboos on instinct and nature. Compassion is less important than food eaten. If morality and a reluctance to eat anything that is living (this would include plants) is the rule to live by, then the only way to do it is by foraging for fallen fruits, berries, seeds and nuts. Though I am not certain that eating seeds is ethical since they contain life? Given that most of our forests have gone, this way of life is currently impractical. The upside is that if we all follow it, humans may die out altogether and, thus, save the planet from our deranged behaviour! So we come to the crux of the issue facing us: the protection of cows from being eaten. There is no such protection for goats, chickens (except prohibition of virtual eggs), pigs and so on. Indian Jews and Muslims, for whom pork is proscribed, have to look away when they see pork and avoid it on menus. But caste Hindus and Jains cannot make this distinction. They must insist that no one can eat what they cannot eat. Because otherwise, their religious sentiments will be ‘hurt’. The Prime Minister — finally pushed to discuss the violent behaviour of ‘cow protectors’ — discussed how cows are ill-treated in India, walking around eating garbage. This fact greatly upsets our cow protection activists because their actions are pegged solely on taking ‘revenge’ on Dalits and Muslims for possibly eating beef or skinning the cattle, rather than the tedious task of looking after abandoned cattle. Murder, rape and public thrashings are all kosher if it’s done in the name of cow protection. One of the Maharashtra government’s first actions after coming to power — because the state has no other problems — was to ban all ‘cow and progeny’ slaughter, with incredible fines for transgressions. The court has overturned some of these, but why should cow protection units care about the law? The Haryana government has gone even further with its cow protection squads — not ‘hooligans’ as the Prime Minister suggested, but government-monitored teams — going around and attacking biryani stalls in Mewat just before the celebration of Bakri Eid, just in case Muslims use beef. The Prime Minister perhaps needs to have another little chat with them? The upshot of all this is the ridiculous notion that your nationalism is based on whether you eat biryani or not and how you like your eggs. The answer for me is mutton biryani and masala omelette! 99 mid-day editorial: This visarjan, put self before selfies Tomorrow is Anant Chaturdashi — the last day of Ganesh Visarjan. And, as always, Mumbai will go into a frenetic mode with devotees clogging roads to pay their last respects to Ganeshji. Adding to the crowd, members from different mandals and pandal volunteers will accompany the idols to different immersion ghats in the city. But immersion day is such a Kodak-modak moment for Mumbai. Heavy celeb presence will be felt across the city on this day. Actors, surrounded by a phalanx of photographers, will no doubt step out to pay respect to the Ganpati, publicly. Amidst all the activity on the Grand Trunk Road of Mumbai, selfies will rule — whether with the Lord or even otherwise. Lifeguards at our beaches often grieve over the selfie mania and urge devotees to be extra careful of ‘selfie seekers’. It would be prudent to heed their advice and respect rules while at immersion ghats. Though it is a non- negotiable order, it’s a given that warnings will be ignored or flouted. Drowning, it seems, has become an occupational hazard on immersion day, but this ‘it happens’ attitude needs to change. It is entirely unacceptable. Incidents of swimmers overestimating their prowess or underestimating the water current and drowning surface every visarjan day. Even inebriated people go out to sea fuelled by alcohol-induced bravado. It is time devotees take responsibility for their own safety. Don’t go beyond your comfortable water depth. If in a group, especially pandal groups, ensure someone carries a basic safety kit. Adherence to instructions and police rules during immersion is sacrosanct. Fervour is one thing but it cannot be mixed with foolhardiness. This visarjan, let us cheer for all the right reasons and make the occasion memorable.

No more freebies - Tshwane mayor Pretoria – The new Tshwane council has started a review of exemptions from rates and services billing that the previous ANC administration is alleged to have handed out, Mayor Solly Msimanga's office said on Tuesday. "It cannot be that debt owed to the City of Tshwane by other arms of government goes unpaid any longer," acting mayoral spokesperson Matthew Gerstner said. Msimanga would expose these debtors and demand full payment at the end of the review he was conducting. Tshwane needed to collect debts to improve service delivery, he said. Gerstner was responding to claims the EFF had made that provincial and national government departments, the ANC's provincial offices and its Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg had not been paying for basic services such as water and electricity for years. The EFF accused the former mayors of Tshwane and Johannesburg - Kgosientso Ramokgopa and Parks Tau - of shielding the ANC government as some departments had allegedly not paid utility bills for over five years. Government debt Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba's spokesperson Tony Taverna-Turisan said the ANC had brought its Luthuli House bill up to date, paying R1 million on September 2. The mayor will also revisit the billing crisis that once plagued the city through the establishment of a billing Indaba. The Gauteng government has expressed concern over the EFF’s statement, stating that it had made a commitment to address challenges around billing and unpaid municipal rates as far back as 2011. In a written response, it said it put systems in place to support municipalities in dealing with the issues, including the creation of a debt committee. “It functions as the first port of call between the department and municipalities in cases where there are disputes over the disconnection of municipal services because of outstanding debt,” explained the premier’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane. She said there have been significant improvements in efforts to fast track government debt since the establishment of the committee. She also noted that the Finance MEC Barbara Creecy had set aside funds for this, growing from R300 million in the 2012/2015 financial year to R334 million for 2015/2016. The EFF called for an investigation into the accounts of government departments and the ANC. "And if it is found that indeed the defaults have been protected illegally, the two former mayors must be called to account and charged where applicable," the EFF said in a statement.
