A ALL-SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EOARD OF ATHLETICS, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1985, HAS SELECTED AN ALL-SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL TEAM COMPOSED OF THE TOP FOOTBALL PLAYERS FROM THE NINE CONFERENCES OF THE CIF SOUTHERN SECTION. PRIOR TO THIS YEAR, THE 25-MEMBER BOARD OF SPORTS JOURNALISTS PICKED SEVERAL DIVISIONAL TEAMS, WITH THE VARIOUS CONFERENCES RAN­ DOMLY PLACED IN FOUR DIVISIONS. THE BOARD'S 49TH ANNUAL SELECTION MEETING WAS HELD IN CULVER CITY AND A SINGLE "PREMIER" TEAM WAS NAMED.. .TWELVE PLAYERS ON OFFENSE AND TWELVE PLAYERS ON DEFENSE. THE BOARD ALSO VOTED TO ELIMINATE, FOR THE 1985 SEASON AT LEAST, THE SELECTION OF AN MVP FOR THE PREMIER SOUTHLAND TEAM. THERE WERE FIVE CONFERENCE MVPs OR CO-MVPs ON THE TEAM AND THE BOARD VOTE REFLECTED THE FACT THAT WITH SO MUCH TALENT A SINGLE MVP FROM THE GROUP MIGHT WELL PROVE UNFAIR. , Seven of the Southern Section nine conferences are represented on the 1985 a ll-s ta r team. As expected the Big 5 Conference led the way w ith nine representatives. The Northwestern Conference placed four players, with the Eastern and Coastal Conferences placing three each. The Southern and South- Eastern Conferences landed two players each, while the Central Conference had one player named. Nine players named to the All-Southern Section team represent Con­ ference championship teams. A like number are repeaters from la st year, each selected on a 1984 divisional a ll-sta r team.

With the passing of Assembly Bill (AB) 104 on July 1, 2015, the legislature provided the $500 million Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG) to the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to jointly work with the California Department of Education to expand and improve the delivery of educational services to adult learners across the state through the establishment of regional consortia of educational providers. Under AB 104, ABC Adult School is a proud member of PAACE (Partnership for Adult Academic and Career Education) consortium which includes Cerritos Community College, Downey Adult School, Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School, Bellflower Adult School, and ABC Adult School. The upcoming WASC accreditation will chart a new course for ABC Adult School, as the school is implementing its 3-year PAACE consortium plan during the WASC self-study years. ABC Adult School prides itself on the rigorous, standard-based programs we offer. We continue analyzing the data, looking at ways to improve our programs, and making our best efforts in completing the rigorous WASC self-study process during these Adult Education trying times.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Valerie Martinez Aug. 15, 2016 Juliette Funes (909) 445-1001 Whittier Union Celebrates Grand Opening of ‘Sandra Sanchez Thorstenson Stadium’ WHITTIER, CA – Hundreds of Whittier community members on Aug. 12 converged on the California High School campus to celebrate the dedication and grand opening of Whittier Union’s second 7,000-seat District stadium – this one named in honor of visionary educational leader and former superintendent, Sandra Thorstenson. The $20 million facility, built with proceeds from the District’s $75 million Measure W facilities bond, was dedicated the Sandra Sanchez Thorstenson Stadium. Thorstenson, who retired from her post in June after 15 years as superintendent and 39 total years with the District, is a renowned force who successfully instituted a culture of support, collaboration and unity among teachers and staff for the benefit of every single student. “We are excited to open this new stadium to our schools and community and to honor a visionary, transformational leader – Sandy Thorstenson,” Whittier Union Board of Trustees President Leighton Anderson said. “She showed all of us that demographics do not determine destiny and this new stadium demonstrates that every student deserves the right to a first-rate education in high-quality facilities. I want to thank the community for supporting this project and helping us continue to empower our student-athletes on and off the field.” During the celebration, visitors toured the District stadium, which will be shared among California, La Serna and Whittier high schools, and saw firsthand the many improvements it will offer to the school community, including enhanced seating capacity – with 2,000 seats for visitors and 5,000 seats for the home team – and upgrades that include an all-weather track, renovated soccer fields, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, junior varsity and varsity baseball and softball fields, and concession areas.
