When students arrive, those eating breakfast will go directly to the cafeteria, and those not eating will go directly to the auditorium. Students will remain in the cafeteria until released to go to class. Students will remain in the auditorium until released to class at 7:20. Any student requesting permission to leave either area should have a note from a teacher or one of the administrators. Teachers will be on duty in the cafeteria, auditorium, commons and hallways. The first bell rings at 7:20 am for students to move to classes and class begins at 7:35 am. If a student arrives after 7:35 a.m., a parent/guardian must accompany the student to the office and the student will then receive a tardy note. He/she is counted tardy and must have a note from the office before being permitted to enter the classroom. The buses will be unloading students at the entrance to the cafeteria beginning at 7:10 am. No carpool student should arrive at school before 7:10 a.m. You should arrive in time so your child can be in their classroom prior to the tardy bell ringing at 7:35 a.m. Carpool students will enter the building at the cafeteria entrance and go to the appropriate place. Parents of carpool students should enter the circle and drive as far around the circle as possible when unloading and loading students. Two lines should be formed prior to merging together at the designated cones, to prevent any backup of cars on the highway. There will be staff on duty to assist in loading, unloading and traffic flow. During morning drop off and afternoon carpool pick up, parents are not permitted to park in the parking lot to drop their students off or park in the afternoon and wait for their student to cross the carpool line and come to their vehicle nor can a parent park and get out to walk their student to their vehicle. All traffic must enter and flow through the carpool line. Traffic is ONE WAY ONLY as you pull into the carpool line. Carpool students must be picked up no later than 3:00 pm. Parents of carpool students should not park in the traffic circle if they need to see a teacher for a conference. In the event that a parent needs to enter the building when they pick up their child, they should park in the visitor parking lot. No student will be permitted to walk to and from school. At no time can a student be dropped off or picked up in the bus parking lot. CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES Harnett County Board of Education Policy states that “no staff member shall excuse any pupil from school or class prior to the end of the school day or class, or into any person’s custody, without the direct prior approval and knowledge of the principal or his/her designee”. Also, “no student shall be permitted to leave school early under any conditions without parents’ or guardians’ authorization and the permission of the principal or his designee”. We ask that students not be checked out early unless there is an emergency. In view of the above policy, Coats-Erwin Middle School will observe the following check-in/check-out procedures: A. Students who report to school after 7:35 a.m. must check in through the office with a parent/guardian and receive a note to class. B. Students leaving during the school day must be checked out through the office by the person picking them up. You will be required to show your ID prior to entering the building. C. Students must be picked up by a parent or guardian or bring a written permission from the parent or guardian if being picked up by someone else. D. Parents or designee picking up students must present a photo ID and report directly to the office and sign the student out using the digital check out system or sign out sheet provided. Students will be called from class on the intercom. E. No student will be released to the office before the parent or designee arrives. F. Any student who leaves campus before 11:15 am and does not return to complete the school day will be counted as absent for that day. G. Under no circumstances will a student be released from class without following the above check-out procedures. CEMS TARDY POLICY Attendance at CEMS is for the purpose of obtaining an education and being prepared for success. This requires full attendance in all classes, coming to class on time, and using every minute productively. Tardies interrupt class, and if left unchecked, may establish bad attendance habits. A student is counted tardy if he/she is not in his/her designated classroom when the tardy bell rings. Excused tardiness is accepted only when accompanied by a valid note. 1) Personal Illness 2) Death in the immediate family 3) Medical appointment as verified in writing by the physician or his/her designee 4) Miscellaneous causes of an emergency nature approved by the principal or medical authority. 5) Court summons 6) Religious holiday Tardy to school: Once determined that a student has excessive tardiness, the teacher will contact the parent.
