February 26, 2021 Amazon Warehouse Workers In
February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. Shawn Patterson
SHAWN PATTERSON SELECTED CREDITS MAKING APES: THE ARTISTS WHO CHANGED FILM (2019) THE LEGO MOVIE (2014) SUPERMANSION (2015-2019) THE ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS (2015-2018) ROBOT CHICKEN (2010-2014) BIOGRAPHY Shawn Patterson is an Academy Award, Emmy and Grammy nominated Composer, Songwriter and Music Producer. Originally hailing from Athol, Massachusetts, Patterson's lifelong passion for music started with his late father, Ronald Patterson, a multi-instrumentalist musician. As a child, Shawn was exposed to television shows whose music scores (and sometimes songs) became engrained in his head: ‘Star Trek’, ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’, ‘Lost In Space’, and ‘Starsky & Hutch’. But it was his introduction to John Williams' legendary scores of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Superman’ that initiated Patterson's profound life long journey to become a score composer and a part of cinematic storytelling through music. Shawn attended Berklee College of Music and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; where he was selected to study privately and perform with legendary jazz musicians Dr. Billy Taylor and Max Roach. As a jazz, blues, rock guitarist and bandleader, Shawn played shows and lead various bands (including trio, duo and solo settings) while writing compositions in his free time. In 1987, Patterson attended and graduated from the Grove School of Music in Studio City, California. While attending Grove, Shawn studied orchestration and arranging privately with Roger Steinman. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1990, Patterson studied composition and orchestration privately with legendary Los Angeles Composer and Orchestrator, Jack Smalley. Patterson soon found success writing music for film trailers around town. Over the years, Shawn has composed score and written songs in an enormous wide range of styles for a number of award winning episodic television shows. -

ENG 1131: POLITICS OF THE SUPERHERO, SPRING 2019 ENG 1131: Politics of the Superhero (Class #13890) Instructor: Megan Fowler MWF Period 5; W Period E1-E3 Email: [email protected] Office: Turlington 4321 University of Florida Office hours: W Period 6-7 COURSE DESCRIPTION The superhero has had a lasting cultural legacy starting from the archetype’s 1930s origin and continuing with an almost overwhelming proliferation of superhero media into the 21st century. This course will examine that legacy, focusing on the political and cultural contexts that shape superheroes and how superhero narratives respond to these contexts. In addition, as this is a Writing Through Media course, we will be exploring the myriad of different mediums creators utilize for superhero stories, including comics, animation, blockbuster films, television shows, radio shows, etc. This course will begin by introducing some of the pulp heroes that served as superhero antecedents, such as Zorro, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and the Phantom. We will then explore the relationship between the superhero and American identity, focusing on the emergence of the Golden Age of superhero comics with characters such as Superman and Captain America. This exploration will demonstrate the cultural legacy of Jewish identity on the origin of the superhero, the pivotal role superhero comics played in WWII, and the continued political relevance of these characters in contemporary American culture. The next unit will center around superheroines, beginning with Wonder Woman and the influence of first wave feminism on her genesis. Moving into the contemporary, we will look at a number of postmodern takes on the superheroine in a range of formats from independent webcomics to anime to television. -

Review: 70908 - The Scuttler By linmix Images by linmix and LEGO® System A/S Set: The Scuttler Set number: 70908 Parts: 775 Contains: 6 minifi gs Price: 79,99€ / $79,99 It’s LEGO®, it’s a movie, it’s Batman™ – what could possibly to date. I simply fail to see the connection. At fi rst sight I go wrong? wasn’t at all interested in the series of sets LEGO brought out for The LEGO Batman Movie. There are clear and charming When The LEGO Batman Movie came out it took me quite references to the typical villains Batman battles, but nothing a while before I went to see it. Truth be told, I was a little that screams “Buy me!” afraid; of disappointment, of seeing simply ‘another movie’ – entertaining at best, but nothing substantial. In in the end it turned out that my fears were unfounded; that the movie wasn’t just a succession of gags, but also had an interesting plot line. As a bonus, the sets representing scenes from the movie all had the same mix of crazy fun as the movie itself. With ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ something similar happened. On the one hand I was looking forward to another encounter with the crazy character of the Dark Knight. The trailers were all quite entertaining and it looked like the the movie would have both a multitude of gags and a story to tell. On the However, there is one set that stood out for me: The Scuttler. other hand I was afraid I might be disappointed – watching There are two determining factors that drew my attention in it at a local cinema means having to ‘suffer’ the Spanish this set from the very fi rst time I saw it. -

'Seeing the Invisible: Batman's Gotham and Green Arrow's Star
SEEING THE INVISIBLE: BATMAN’S GOTHAM AND GREEN ARROW’S STAR CITY UNMASKED LISANN ANDERS UNIVERSITY OF ZÜRICH Cities in comics are often represented as confining and liberating at the same time. They promise opportunity and prospect embodying the American Dream which, nonetheless, comes at a cost. The downsides can be diverse: the loss of family and friends due to crimes, an overwhelming anonymity, or the loss the self. André Suhr sums this aspect of the city up by outlining that On the one hand it liberates the individual to concentrate on him- or herself […]; on the other hand this very liberation may produce loneliness and isolation. In an atmosphere of general indifference it gets harder and harder to be recognized as an individual. So, according to Simmel, individuality in the modern city becomes a staged production of superficial effects. (Suhr 2010, 240-241) This performative aspect of the urban setting is predominantly emphasized in superhero comics, in which the hero is dressing up in order to take on the persona of “hero” and/or “vigilante.” In this regard, two examples stand out, namely the eponymous protagonists of the comic series The Batman and The Green Arrow. For both, the city is transformed into a stage on which they can perform their heroism. However, in doing so, they are at the risk of losing their unmasked identity respectively as Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen. In the following article, I would like to explore the creation and loss of identity within the city space through the analysis of the comic miniseries Batman: Broken City (2004) by writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso, and Mike Grell’s comic series Green Arrow (issues 1-12) from 1987–1989 (later republished 1 JULY 2020 POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG «» POPMEC.HYPOTHESES.ORG as collected editions in 2012-2013)1, as well as the TV show Arrow seasons 1-52. -
