Welcome to the second issue of the CGC Journal: Raíces de la Perla! We hope you enjoyed our inaugural issue and found the information useful in your research. Please write and let us know of your successes. We are very excited to feature two articles in this issue by a guest columnist and friend, Peter Carr, noted author and publisher. Mr. Carr's first article concerns the second installment in the "Streets of Havana" series; the second article studies the use of government records in the search for your ancestors. Many thanks to Peter for his articles and for a special treat for our CGC members. The CGC Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that Peter Carr has also graciously offered to conduct a "Question and Answer" session on Cuban Genealogy scheduled for September 17, 2005. This seminar is free of charge and offered only to CGC members in good standing. Please read the article concerning the session for more details. Many thanks to Peter Carr for his interest and generosity!

This issue also covers the special ancestors of some of our members who can proudly claim to be descendants of the first Europeans to inhabit the Florida peninsula, primarily the settlers of St. Augustine, Florida. We hope the information provided will offer clues leading you to claim these first Americans as your ancestors, as well. The archives of the genealogical and historical societies of St. Augustine offer much information on these early settlers. The best part of having St. Augustine ancestors is that you can conduct your Cuban genealogical research without ever leaving the country! No passport required!

Earlier this year, the CGC presented a donation in the amount of $500 to Florida International University's Special Collections section to be used towards the purchase of Cuban and Iberian genealogical books and materials. 1 Diario de la Marina: The Jaruco Articles by Eduardo Ramos García Thanks to the efforts of our friend and colleague, Mayra Sanchez-Johnson, president of the Cuban Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah, we know that Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén, in addition to writing the important "Historia de Familias Cubanas" volumes, also wrote a series of articles published in the newspaper "Diario de la Marina". In her quarterly magazine, "Revista", Mayra Sanchez-Johnson, identified a total of 164 articles by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén written during a span of seven years: from 1945 through 1952. For a complete listing of these articles, please refer to the April 1988 edition of "Revista" (volume I, issue number 2). In this issue, Mayra states there may be more articles and that the articles are not all genealogical in nature. In order to assist you in your research, The CGC Journal staff would like to offer a summary of each of these articles with the hope that many may contain information or clues concerning your family lines. These summaries will run as a feature article in each successive issue of "Raíces de la Perla" until we have covered all 164 known articles. Our staff will also conduct research as to whether or not any more articles exist; summaries of those will be published as well. If any of you are considering reviewing these articles on your own, we can offer one time saving tip. While viewing the microfilms, our board member, Mariela Fernandez, noted that several of the first few articles were found on page 33 of the "Diario de la Marina". Try that page first before skimming the entire paper. If anyone would like to contribute a summary of an article, we would greatly welcome and appreciate your efforts.

1. "Un Cubano Príncipe de la Iglesia" - December 27, 1945 The subject of this article is Monseñor Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt , the first Cuban priest to hold the post of Cardinal in The Roman Catholic Church. The author describes Monseñor Arteaga's rise in the church, his own relationship with the Cardinal and makes note of his ancestors, starting from the first Arteaga to arrive on Cuban shores from Sevilla, Spain, over 300 years earlier, Martín Arteaga y Erasu, "capitán de Navío de la Real Armada", through to the Cardinal's father, Rosendo Arteaga y Guerra-Montejo, who held the rank of Comandante during the Cuban War of Independence.

2. "Nobleza Cubana - Los Orígenes" - July 7, 1946 This article is a general piece dealing with the origins of the Cuban nobility, breaking it down into two classes. The first and oldest being the descendants of the original conquistadores and settlers; the second those descended from the later immigrants. El conde de Jaruco also offers his own personal view on the relevance between these two classes. Unfortunately, no families in particular are dealt with in this article.

3. "Historia del Real Tribunal de Cuentas" - July 21, 1946 The Real Tribunal de Cuentas were tax centers established by law in 1605 and confined to three administrative centers in Spain's colonies: Peru, Colombia and Mexico. At first, Cuba, along with Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Florida, reported to the tribunal in Mexico but due to distance and growth, Cuba received its own center in 1639. In this article, Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén names the first ten contadores and provides genealogical information on most, some in great detail. These first ten were: Pedro Beltrán de Santa Cruz y Beitia, Juan Ortíz de Gatica y de la Barrera, Bartolomé de Arriola y García de Londoño, Agustín Valdéz y Córdova, Pedro de Arango y Monroy, Diego de Torres-Ayala y Quadros, Manuel García Palacios, Juan Francisco Zequeira y Ramallo, José Antonio Gelabert y Garcés, and Manuel José Aparicio del Manzano y Justiz.

4. "El Morro" - July 28, 1946 Just after the discovery of the New World, word of the riches brought over from the Spanish colonies spread throughout the other European powers. Pirates sponsored and protected by Spain's enemies, began raiding ships and Spanish ports. La Habana, unfortunately, was one of these ports and did not escape looting by pirates. The fortress of "El Morro" was built in the latter part of the XVI century to defend the city of La Habana against these foreign aggressors and pirates. The fort had its own Alcalde del Castillo de la Fuerza who besides governing its activities, was also charged with the important duty of serving as the acting Captain and Governor General of Cuba whenever a vacancy occurred until a new governor was named and officially took control of the island's leadership. This practice was first petitioned in 1615 by one of the alcaldes del Morro, Jerónimo de Quero, and continued until 1715 when a change was made and the post of lieutenant governor of the island was created. This article briefly covers the creation of "El Morro", its designers, the re-edification process started by Antonio Fernández-Trevejo y Zaldivar, and backgrounds and exploits of a couple of its more illustrious alcaldes: Luis Chacón y Castellón & Vicente González de Bassecourt. The author also covers the family 2 of one of the military officials entrusted with the defense of the city, Alejandro O'Reilly y MacDowell, Inspector General de la Tropa Reglada y Milicias de las islas de Cuba y Puerto Rico, brother-in-law of Luis de las Casas y Aragorri, one of Cuba's Governor Generals. His son, Pedro O'Reilly y de las Casas, born in Madrid, married the habanera, María Francisca Calvo de la Puerta y del Manzano. Also mentioned is one of their children, Manuel O'Reilly y Calvo de la Puerta, who married María Francisca Núñez del Castillo y Montalvo.

5. "Militares Cubanos en el Extranjero" - August 4, 1946 As one would conclude, this article concerns military servicemen, many of which were descendants of the early settlers of the island, who gained fame while in the service of the Spanish Crown. Many held important military posts and governorships in other territories of the Spanish colonies, some even settling in those areas. El Conde de San Juan de Jaruco mentions the following people and some their exploits in the VXIII century: Anastasio Francisco Armenteros y Zaldivar, José Pascual Zayas y Chacón, Gonzalo O'Farrill y Herrera, Juan de Justiz y Urrutia, Antonio Modesto del Valle y Castillo, Francisco Díaz-Pimienta, Luis Chacón y Castellón, Joaquín de Santa Cruz y Cárdenas, Anastasio Arango y Núñez del Castillo, Vicente Jenaro de Quesada y Arango, Manuel José de Justiz y Umpierrez, Fernando Miyares y Pérez Bernal, Antonio de Sucre y Trelles, the progenitor of the first president of the Republic of Bolivia, Antonio José de Sucre y Alcalá, Sebastián Calvo de la Puerta y O'Farrill, Martín de Aróstegui y Bassave, Bruno José Caballero y del Barco, Manuel Zequeira y Arango, Antonio de Beitia y Castro, and Claudio Martínez de Pinillo y Cevallos.

Many brothers are also included: Rafael and Andrés de Arango y Núñez del Castillo; Tiburcio and Juan Antonio Díaz-Pimienta; Gonzalo and Félix Chacón y Treviño; Miguel and José Beltrán de Santa Cruz y Valdespino; Mariano and Joaquín González de la Torre y Rives; Francisco and Ignacio de Justiz y Urrutia; Juan Crisóstomo, Manuel and Francisco de Justiz y Chinchilla; Martín, Ignacio, José Rafael, Domingo y Antonio de Ugarte y Aróstegui; Martín and Gonzalo de Aróstegui y Herrera; José Ricardo and Rafael de O'Farrill y Herrera; Fernando, Manuel, Pedro and Alejandro O'Reilly y Calvo de la Puerta; Francisco, Rafael and Pedro Montalvo y Ambulodi; Tomás and Diego Montalvo y Sotolongo; Juan, Pedro, Rafael, Francisco and José Lorenzo Montalvo y O'Farrill; Hilario and Felipe Remirez de Estenoz y Sotolongo; Jerónimo, José Maria, Melchor and Pedro José Du Quesne y Roustan de Estrada, and the son of the latter, Pedro Claudio Du Quesne y Arango.

Lastly, for some, as shown with the Du Quesne family, service in the Spanish armed forces became a family affair, passing the military tradition from father to son and even grandson. Included are: Antonio María González de la Torre y González Aponte, his son, Jorge Maria, and grandson, Luis María; Ignacio González de la Torre y Urrutia and his son, José Ignacio; Francisco José de Albear y Hernández and his son, Francisco José; José Rafael Montalvo y Bruñón and his sons, José María, Casimiro and Agustín Montalvo y Sotolongo; José María González de la Torre y Urrutia and his son, Antonio María; and José Antonio de Arredondo y Ambulodi and his sons (the names of these sons are not noted in the article).

6. "La Iglesia Parroquial de La Habana" - August 25, 1946 The very early years of what is today La Catedral de la Habana is the subject of this essay. The article covers the period, at times violent due to pirate attacks, from when the church was just a bohío to the later construction of an actual building in 1550. The author does mention the Roxas, Velázquez de Cuéllar and Cepero families who were involved with the church and the government of the island and some notable figures in Cuban colonial history, such as Hernando de Soto and Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa.

7. "La Cabaña y Atarés" - September 01, 1946 The title of this article refers to los castillos de San Carlos de la Cabaña y Atarés which were built after 1763, when the British relinquished control over the island and returned Cuba to Spain. The first to be built was Atarés, located on a hill called González, named after Manuel González. La Cabaña followed a few years later in 1774 and is located on another hill called Cerro de la Cabaña. At the time of the initial construction of these castillos, the land belonged to Agustín de Sotolongo y Pérez de las Alas, who donated the land to the Spanish government. The article also notes some of those who returned to Cuba after British control with the new Governor General, Ambrosio Funes de Villalpando y Abarca de Bolea, such as: Alejandro O'Reilly y MacDowell, Silvestre de Albarca, Agustín Cramer and Antonio Fernández Trevejo y Zaldivar. The genealogical interest in this article is the information concerning the Sotolongo family. Besides noting several members of this family, including Francisco de Madrid Sotolongo, Juan Bautista de Roxas Sotolongo y Laredo, Diego Sotolongo y Roxas, Cristóbal de Sotolongo y Salazar and Cristóbal Sotolongo y González, the author also covers the progenitor of this family, Juan Rodríguez de Sotolongo, who lived during the reign of King Enrique IV de Castilla. 3 8. "La Primera Fortaleza y el Castillo de la Fuerza" - September 08, 1946 This article concerns the edification of the first fortress in La Habana, commissioned by Hernando de Soto upon his arrival as governor in 1537 and finished in 1540, and its re-fortification by subsequent governors. The fortress proved to be ineffective against the continuing pirate attacks, to the point where one governor, Juan de Avila, in a communiqué to the king stated: "de fortaleza no tenia mas que el nombre; que estaba mal situada y peor construida." The spanish court finally listened to the cries of the habaneros and another of its governors, Diego de Mazariegos, and sent el ingeniero Bartolomé Sánchez to start construction on a new fort. This new fort, later named el Castillo de la Fuerza, was built on land owned by several of the city's more prominent citi- zens: Juan de Roxas, Melchor Rodríguez, Juan Gutiérrez, Antón Recio, Alonso Sánchez del Corral, Diego Sotolongo, the priest Andrés de Nis, Juan de Roxas Inestrosa and Isabel Nieto. In 1561, in light of the slow progress of the new fort, Spain sent Francisco de Calona, maestro de cantería, to replace Bartolomé Sánchez. El Castillo de la Fuerza took 20 years to be built and was the place of residence of the capitanes generales y gobernadores of the island. The author mentions Francisco de Calona and his wife, Leonor de Peralta, and names two of their daughters, Ana and Mariana, and their respective husbands, Alonso Sánchez de Torquemada y Angulo and Gregorio de la Torre Sifontes. Other names mentioned in this article are: Juan Lobrera, Alcalde de la Fortaleza and brother-in-law of Juan de Roxas; Gonzalo Pérez de Angulo, Governor General of Cuba; Melchor Sardo de Arana, an Alcalde de la Fuerza, his wife, Luisa de León Farfán, their daughter, Ana de León Sardo de Arana and her husband, Luis de Céspedes, procurador general and regidor del ayuntamiento. Other alcaldes de la fuerza were: Juan Bautista de Roxas-Sotolongo y Laredo; Diego Fernández de Quiñónes, son of el conde de Luna; and Tomás Bernaldo de Quirós, husband of María Recio y Avellaneda, daughter of Juan Recio. Also mentioned is the captain of the ship "Brava" who fought against Sir Francis Drake, Pedro Álvarez de Ruesga and his habanera wife, Catalina de Sotolongo y González.

9. "La Conquista de la Florida" - September 15, 1946 This essay primarily concerns the exploration and colonization of Florida. From an historical viewpoint, it is an interesting piece on the subject, however, since this type of information is found in any history book, this summary will only avail itself of interesting facts concerning Cuba or Florida and any genealogical information contained therein. Noted in the essay is Hernando de Soto (y Gutiérrez de Cardenosa), the Adelantado de la Florida y Gobernador General de Cuba, who left Santiago de Cuba in 1539 for the ill-fated pacification of Florida. One of the people who joined him was Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa and his son, Lorenzo Gómez Juárez de Figueroa. Vasco can be claimed as an ancestor of a multitude of Cuban families and also the founder of the villas of Trinidad, Puerto Principe, Remedios and Sancti Spíritus. Hernando de Soto left his wife, Isabel de Bobadilla and her brother, Father Francisco de Bobadilla, in Cuba. Isabel and Francisco were the children of Pedro Arias de Avila (Pedrarias D'avila), Governor of Darién, in Panama, and founder of the city of Panama, and the Nicaraguan cities of Granada and León, and his wife, Isabel de Bobadilla y Peñalosa. Many years later, Pedro Menéndez de Aviles, Governor General of Cuba, did much better in his colonization of Florida and his relatives can be counted among its early settlers. His nephew, Pedro Menéndez-Márquez, was the capitán general y gobernador of San Agustín and another relative, Alonso Menéndez-Márquez, born in San Agustín, moved to La Habana where he was married in 1655 to Luisa de Sotolongo y Figueroa. Also noteworthy is Nicolás Ponce de León, born in Spain, and husband of Estefania D'Avila y Mendoza, was the Contador de Real Hacienda in San Agustín in 1631and later its governor in 1651. 6 Families of "Las Floridas": Finding your Florida Pioneer By Eduardo Ramos García

While many of the following families' descendants immigrated to Cuba and other areas, some did remain in Florida, leaving their mark in the state's history through the Spanish and British periods, and finally, the American annex- ation. Most of the information concerning those who chose to settle in Cuba was taken from the volumes of the Historia de Familias Cubanas (HFC) written by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén, el Conde de San Juan de Jaruco. However, data concerning a few of the surnames was also found in Genealogías Habaneras (GH), by Rafael Nieto y Cortadellas and the remainder, offered to the CGC by members Hilda Pomares, Teresa Sardiñas, Martha Ibáñez Zervoudakis and Nicolás de Cárdenas. The information secured from the HFC and GH books note the volume and page number after the listing of the descendant surnames (DS). Please note the descendant surnames may also have their own chapter in the HFC volumes. Be sure to check them for additional clues or surnames in your search for a Florida Pioneer! Consider, as well, that these descendant surnames may only repre- sent one line of that family and not everyone bearing this name. If you are lucky enough to find an ancestor among these early Floridians, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you and your progress towards your certification! Q & A with Peter Carr: September of 2005 The CGC is pleased to host a "Question & Answer" session with noted author Peter Carr to be held at Florida International University on Saturday, September 17, 2005, from 2:00 pm to 5:00pm. The presentation is at no charge to you, our fellow members; the exact room will be advised by August of 2005. Peter Carr was born in Havana, Cuba, and started his genealogical research after his arrival in the USA in 1962. Aside from being an author, teacher, historian and professional genealogist, Mr. Carr is also an archeologist and anthropologist, obtaining his degree in Anthropology from California State University, Long Beach. Confronted with the difficul- ties of securing Cuban genealogical documentation, Peter Carr charged himself with writing the definitive "how to" book on genealogical research in Cuba: Guide to Cuban Genealogical Research, published in 1991 and win- ner of the American Society of Genealogists' Scholar Award for 1997. A review of this book, by Marie Zaret, can be found in the inaugural issue our Journal. His second book, Censos, Padrones y Matrículas de la Población de Cuba, Siglos 16, 17 y 18, published in 1993, contains a wealth of names and information on the population centers of Cuba during these centuries. From 1993 to 1998, he was publisher and editor of the quarterly "Caribbean Historical & Genealogical Journal", offering clues and genealogical data from the many islands of the Caribbean. In 1992, he compiled THE CUBAN INDEX, a database of Cuban records abstracted from newspapers, city directories, and other data covering the period from 1840 to 1939. Mr. Carr helped to edit Spanish translations at the Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum, in St. Augustine, Florida, and has been featured in Who's Who in Genealogy & Heraldry, and Who's Who in Writers, Editors, and Poets. In addition to contributing articles to a variety encyclopedic projects, magazines and newspapers, Peter has also lectured at many conferences and seminars such as the 20th International Congress of Genealogical & Heraldic Sciences, 1992; NGS Conference, 1994; Hispanic Genealogical & Historical Society Conference 1995, 1996, 2001; Federation of Genealogical Societies, 2002, 2003, and many, many others.

Carr Examinando el Directorio de la Ciudad de La Habana y Estramuros de Don Eduardo Yones (Jones) para el año 1842 es posible conocer mucho acerca de los habitantes y de la vida cotidiana habanera. Aunque dichos directo- rios no incluian a todos los moradores por lo menos nos dan una idea de ellos. Es importante no solamente recor- dar la patria de antaño sino conocer como ha evolucionado.

Una de las calles de mucho interes es la calle Villegas. Como nos explica Manuel Fernández Santalices en su obra Las Calles de La Habana Intramuros dicha calle corre de norte a sur comenzando en Monserrate y "cerran- do" en la calle Luz. La procedencia del nombre de acuerdo a Fernández viene de José Raimundo Borges Villegas (1740-1810) que vivió en ella. El era miembro de la extensa familia Villegas procedentes de Venezuela que se establecieron en La Habana desde el principio del siglo XVIII.

Dicha calle representa el comercio tanto como la vida residencial y el gobierno. La numeración comienza en el norte y crece hacia el sur dando la vuelta al final de la calle y siguiendo su crecimiento hacia el norte. La lista que sigue contiene todas las personas de dicho directorio que vivian el la calle Villegas. Repasando la lista rapidamente se ve que muchos de los inquilinos eran proprietarios aunque no se sabe si de la misma propiedad donde vivian o de otro lugar. Algunos apellidos son de familias muy conocidas como Güell, Bombalier, Hano y Vega, Renté, Artigas conocido comerciante, Calvet familia que enlazo en el siglo XX con la familia Sentenat intimamente conocida por el autor, tambien el apellido Zayas y otros más. Remedios, como habitualmente se conoce fue una de las primeras villas fundadas en Cuba. Su fundador y primer poblador fue Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa. Dice Ignacio Urrutia, uno de los tres primeros historiadores de Cuba, en Descripción de las Indias: "La Habana y San Juan de los Remedios fueron fundadas poco después de las otras mencionadas villas primitivas". Fue fundada en la costa norte frente al antiguo pueblo de Carahate, a orillas del mar. Tiempo después fue mudada debido a los ataques de piratas y corsarios un poco tierra adentro. Tarjeta Postal. Don José Martínez-Fortún y Foyo, tomó sobre sus hombros el peso de escribir todo cuanto encontró sobre su villa natal. En "Anales y Efemérides de San Juan de los Remedios y su Jurisdicción", editado en La Habana por la Imprenta Pérez, Sierra y Compañía en 1930 podemos encontrar todo lo referente a la misma.

Esta colección de 28 tomos abarca todos los aspectos de la vida y la historia remediana. En palabras del autor refiriendose al contenido de los mismos dice: "Se dividirá en tres partes...la primera un resumen geográfico del Partido Judicial de Remedios. La segunda parte contiene todos los datos históricos que he podido reunir desde la llegada de los primeros conquistadores españoles a este territorio.....La tercera y última parte del libro contiene un Apéndice en el que he procurado hacer un resumen histórico de los pueblos de Remedios, Caibarién, Camajuaní, Placetas, Yaguajay y Zulueta. Se señalan también las historias de nuestras iglesias, parques, sociedades de instrucción y recreo, etc....Una Cronología Remediana da fin al trabajo...."

El trabajo detallado y riguroso que hace el Dr. Martínez Fortún nos permite, a nivel de genealogía encontrar fechas de nacimientos, bautismos, defunciones de muchos de los habitantes de la zona. También detalla los cargos oficiales, las fechas y los nombres de las personas que los ocupan. Copia las actas del Ayuntamiento en su totalidad, resultando la información exhaustiva sobre todo cuanto atañe a esta localidad villaclareña.

CIVIL REGISTRY PUBLISHED IN THE NEWSPAPER "EL DIARIO DE LA MARINA" by Martha Ibañez Zervoudakis The following transcriptions come from the Cuban daily newspaper, El Diario de la Marina. The paper published two daily editions: Edición de la Mañana (Morning Edition) and Edición de la Tarde (Evening Edition). It is interesting to note that most of the Morning Edition papers listed the saint or religious occasion which was celebrated that day. This information was printed in the paper's header next to the date.

The newspaper published births, marriages and deaths under the "Registro Civil" (Civil Registry). Interestingly, deaths sometimes were also published under the heading "Necrologia" (Necrology). The births have not been tran- scribed as they do not include names of individuals, but rather races and numbers within that race for each neighborhood. (Example: Catedral - 1 varón y 1 hembra, blancos, legitimos; etc.)

The Morning Edition did not publish the Civil Registry but did include a few Necrology entries and funeral announcements. These announcements, which seem to have been published by the deceased individual's family, often times yield a great deal of information. This information includes the name of the deceased along with the spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, nephews and nieces, etc. A few were also published to announce the anniversary of a loved one's death and the upcoming religious service. The Evening Edition published the Civil Registry for the previous day(s) as well as Necrology entries and some funeral announcements.

Please note that these were extracted EXACTLY as published in the newspaper with NO attempt to correct spelling, abbreviations, accent marks, etc. The extraction format I've used is as follows:
