For those who have played under or just observed Gerard FitzGerald over his extraordinary football journey, one which today sees him claim ownership as the longest serving coach in the VFA/VFL history, values and principals are as important as wins and losses. FitzGerald is as structured as a Wall Street building, as measured as a Saville Road tailor and as disciplined as any Fort Hood commando. It is a profi le he’s never deviated from and helps explain not only his longevity, but also why the club’s he has coached have been so successful. But thanks to 200-game VFL player turned coach, Saade Ghazi, Pleming gained an invitation to train with Port Melbourne. “I got a call from Saade and really there wasn’t much other interest. It was a bit of a no-brainer,” Pleming recalled, he signed up before pre-season started in 2006. Pleming said he had played “okay” in 2007, but he had been dogged by inconsistency. The turning point came in 2008 when Hawthorn legend Gary Ayres was appointed coach of Port Melbourne. From the outset, Ayres inspired the group and provided the missing link for Pleming, self-confi dence and self- belief. “Once Gary came in the self-belief in the whole group just rose,” he said. “You would go out each week thinking you could win, but in the back of your mind you were probably thinking coming up against AFL players, that they were a bit classier than you. “As soon as Gary came in he threw that out the window. One of the keys to Port Melbourne’s success (they have played fi nals for the past six seasons) is the culture of the club, and that all new players buy into it. It is something the both the club and players pride themselves in. This culture is also key to Pleming’s longevity. “It has been a pleasure to play.
