CHAPTER TWELVE RAF EXPERIENCES Hugh Cortazzi I began to study Japanese as an aircraftsman shortly after I joined the RAF in 1943 when I was nineteen. After some fifteen months at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, I was posted to India where, after attending an Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU), I was sent to the Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre (India) (CSDIC(I)) in Delhi. In August 1945 I was a member of No.5 Mobile Sections of CSDIC(I) which was attached to 14 Army. 14 Army was to provide the main force for the reoccupation of Malaya. In the event the Japanese surrender inter- vened and I arrived in Singapore at the beginning of September in time for the formal Japanese surrender. I was at first on the staff of tactical head- quarters 14 Army. Later as a member of Southeast Asia Translation and Interrogation Centre (SEATIC) my duties (in Singapore, Malaya and Sumatra) included interpreting and helping to arrange the withdrawal of Japanese forces, investigating Japanese army air and naval air organization and history in the war as well as helping to investigate war crimes. I wanted to go to Japan and eventually succeeded in getting a posting to British Commonwealth Air Forces (BCAIR) Headquarters at Iwakuni in June 1946. The journey by air from Singapore to Iwakuni involved flying in a Dakota (DC3) aircraft. The DC3 was the work-horse of air transport in those days. Its seats consisted of canvas benches down either side of the fuselage. I had, of course, to wait until a ‘seat’ was available as I did not have a high priority.

The floating smell of death hangs over the island. What is it? A strange, legged fish appears on the scene... So begins Tadashi and Kaoris spiral into the horror and stench of the sea. Here is the creepiest masterpiece of horror manga ever from the creator of Uzumaki, Junji Ito. Hold your breath until all is revealed. I have known the name Junji Ito for many, many years, but was never exposed to his work. Last year, I decided to pick up Uzumaki and was heavily impressed with the art and just how detailed the writing was. I have been a passing fan of manga for the better part of my life, but Uzumaki really showed how the writing and art can breath when given the proper love and care. I have been wanting to read Gyo and finally ponied up and picked it up.Having finished it last night, I had many of the same emotions when reading Gyo as I did Uzumaki. Ito is wonderful in his ability to craft disgusting and gorgeous stories that seem to border on asinine, but still feel real enough to increase my heart-rate.

George, Rose, 2014, The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters (pp. 39-64). Henry Holt and Co.. Kindle Edition. 2 THE ROBO-TOILET REVOLUTION THE ACTRESS AND THE GORILLA The flush toilet is a curious object. It is the default method of excreta disposal in most of the industrialized, technologically advanced world. It was invented either five hundred or two thousand years ago, depending on opinion. Yet in its essential workings, this everyday banal object hasn’t changed much since Sir John Harington, godson of Queen Elizabeth I, thought his godmother might like something that flushed away her excreta, and devised the Ajax, a play on the Elizabethan word jakes, meaning privy. The greatest improvements to date were made in England in the later years of the eighteenth century and the early years of the next by the trio of Alexander Cumming (who invented a valve mechanism), Joseph Bramah (a Yorkshireman who improved on Cumming’s valve and made the best lavatories to be had for the next century), and Thomas Crapper (another Yorkshireman who did not invent the toilet but improved its parts). In engineering terms, the best invention was the siphonic flush, which pulls the water out of the bowl and into the pipe. For the user, the S-bend was the godsend, because the water that rested in the bend created a seal that prevented odor from emerging from the pipe. At the height of Victorian invention, when toilets were their most ornate and decorated with the prettiest pottery, patents for siphonic flushes, for example, were being requested at the rate of two dozen or so a year.

SCHUMANN University of Guam Abhik CHAKRABORTY Izu Peninsula Geopark Promotion Council Abstract This paper examines tourist connections between urban and rural areas in Japan with a special focus on Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yamaguchi Prefecture has many nat- ural and historical tourist destinations that appeal to the domestic tourist market. Unfortunately, mountainous agricultural areas in Yamaguchi Prefecture which are far from urban areas have been suffering from depopulation and aging. For rural re- vitalization, some of the rural communities in Yamaguchi are trying to initiate new types of tourism which target urban residents. Keywords:depopulation, rural revitalization, rural tourism lntroduction For more than half a century, rural depopulation has been a serious problem in Japan. To mitigate rural depopulation, the Japanese govern- ment established the Comprehensive National Development Plans(2葱π々o肋 50〃go%血劾薦勿1衝ゴんα肋)in 1962. In an effort to combat rural depopula- tion, the creation of employment opportunities has been important. Some of the prefectural governments also initiated unique plans to mitigate de- population. For example, the One Village One Product movement started from Oita Prefecture and contributed to the production of unique, special一 36- (500) 一 山口経済学雑誌 第63巻 第6号 ty products representative of each village that have also become souvenirs for tourists. F. M. Zain2 and Maslina Jamil1 1Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Malaysia (UKM), Malaysia. 2Deputy Dean, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Malaysia (UKM), Malaysia. Accepted 27 June, 2011 A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacle such as a body of water, city, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. Bridges are a unique offshoot of architecture and possess their own associated terms, components and styles. This paper presents the second part of Japanese bridges by investigating architectural aspects of its design. Limited usable land in heavily populated areas of Japan has often necessitated the design of unique bridge approaches. One of such design is the spiral viaduct bridge approach. When this design is used, care is taken to make the structures aesthetically appealing. An important reason for the bridge construction will lead into a critical study of bridge aesthetics and structural design. According to the configuration of frameworks, bridges may be described as arched, girdered and cable stayed or suspension. Refereeing to Japanese bridges, those most frequently provided cable stayed in the construction of bridges are important factor in architecture and bridges aesthetic. This paper presents a brief history of bridge design in Japan, and then discusses the influence of technical factors on Japan bridges design.
