He also served as the Master Planner and Supervising Architect for UCLA from 1949 to 1969. After Becket's death, the firm continued under the same name, directed by his nephew, MacDonald Becket. Around 1985, the firm was acquired by Ellerbe Incorporated to become Ellerbe Becket. The collection consists of photographs related to the work of the Welton Becket & Associates architectural firm. Most of the photographs represent projects in and around the Los Angeles area and include examples of both residential and commercial buildings with interior and exterior views. Stored off-site. UCLA Catalog Record ID UCLA Catalog Record ID: 2470243 Biographical / Historical Welton Davis Becket was born in Seattle, Washington, on August 8, 1902; BA, Architecture, University of Washington, (1927), with one year of graduate study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Fontainebleau, France, (1928); partnered with Walter Wurdeman and Charles Plummer under the name Becket, Wurdeman, and Plummer in 1933; following Plummer's death in 1939 and Wurdeman's death in 1949, Becket continued the firm as Welton Becket and Associates, serving as President (1949-68) and Chairman of the Board (1968) until his death in 1969; served as Master Planner and Supervising Architect, UCLA, 1949-69; Becket's philosophy of total design, embracing all requirements demanded of architectural design, became integral to the firm; the firm's designs are not identified with a particular style, but are individual to each client; the firm was one of the largest firms in Los Angeles with building credits throughout the world, including: Pan Pacific Auditorium (with Wurdeman, 1934), Beverly Hilton Hotel (1955), Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles Music Center (1964), Gulf Life Tower, Florida (1967), Xerox Square, New York (1968), several Bullock's Department Stores in California (1951-77), and various UCLA campus structures (1958-70); after Becket's death, the firm continued under the same name, directed by his nephew, MacDonald Becket; around 1985, the firm was acquired by Ellerbe Incorporated to become Ellerbe Becket. Adamson Adamson: Let’s start with your background and your university training and how you came to work with Welton Becket, just until the time where you first had your relationship with Pankow; the broad overview. Love: University of Illinois undergraduate, worked for a firm during all the time I was in college. I worked in an architect’s office, because I basically even in those days paid your way through school. It was very cheap, but I still paid my way through school, and spent a couple of years after graduation working as a field superintendent, as I mentioned, for this firm, making decisions that architects are not legally allowed to do anymore. It was a very incredible learning experience, and maybe that’s where I developed my respect for contractors. Went to Colorado Springs. Really wanted to go to California, but I couldn’t get any jobs there unless I moved there, and I couldn’t afford to. Went to Colorado Springs and worked there for four years and ran into a high school buddy who was also an architect who was working on the Air Force Academy. We got reconnected. He went to California, went to work for Becket, called me one day and said, “We’ve got jobs out 1 here out the gazoo, if you want to come out here and interview,” which I did, and got a job. So in 1960, and this is really ancient history, 1960, my wife and I and three kids moved to California, and I started work for Becket as a designer.

  • A Guide to Historic Santa Monica City Hall
    A G U I D E T O Historic Santa Monica City Hall The city seal, measuring 79 inches in diameter, was created with the same “Petrachrome” method and a palette of colors, textures and elements similar to those used in the Macdonald-Wright murals. Encircled by the words, “City of Santa Monica, California. Founded 1875,” the seal features a mermaid and Spanish galleon on the bay, with sun, mountains, clouds and airplanes behind. A ribbon near the base of the seal carries the city’s motto, Populus Felix en Urbe Felice, translated from the Latin as “Fortunate People in a Fortunate Land.” The seal is inlaid in the center of the foyer floor, surrounded by color tiles that run along the east-west axis of the foyer and halls. A serrated pattern of yellow triangles running against a brown field, bordered by black stripes, echoes the chevron pattern on the tiled wainscoting found nearby. T he Overview With a nautical quality befitting its seaside locale, Santa Monica City Hall reflects the character of its surroundings, making it a civic building truly connected to its constituency. Designed by two prominent Los Angeles architects, it is rec- ognized as an outstanding example of the Public Works Administration (PWA) Moderne style of architecture popularized by Depression-era architects. With original Gladding, McBean ceramic tiles found around the west entrance doorway and throughout the building, and historic Stanton Macdonald-Wright murals in the entry foyer that document the city’s and the state’s history, the building’s architecture has earned it a place in the California Register of Historical Resources (1996), designation as a city landmark and eligibility for listing in the federal Register of Historic Places.
