THIS PAST WEEK & MORE Ylander Swedehearts Enjoy a Cafeteria Meal 69 years later.... Last night Harry Ylander ‘50 and Ann (Martin) Ylander ‘51 had dinner in the cafeteria before they move to Nebraska. They chose this location because the cafeteria is where they fell in love during their time at Bethany. At that time the cafeteria was known as Old Main. Harry still remembers seeing Ann walk through the door and the feeling he had when he knew she was the one. Harry also came back to Bethany as the Chief Financial officer and Treasurer. We wish them all the best in their 69 years of marriage! Photos and story by Natasha Quintana. Sodexo provided the meal at no charge. Above top: Ylanders Above bottom: Ken Sjogren '57 visits with Harry. Right top: Clair Oleen, acting Vice President of Advancement (AKA Coach) presents the Ylanders with a picture of Old Main. SWEDES PICK UP VICTORY IN TOTAL TEAM EFFORT The Bethany College men's basketball team picked up a 76-59 victory on Wednesday night inside a packed Hahn Gymnasium against KCAC opponent Tabor College. The first five minutes of the contest saw a back and forth battle between the Swedes and the Bluejays. In the 15th minute of the contest, the Swedes sank two three-pointers to bring the score within one point. At the 13:48 mark in the half, Isiah Sanez, junior guard, sank a three-pointer to bring the score to 15 points apiece. Another three-pointer from Justin Jones, senior guard, allowed the Swedes to gain a 28-24 lead in the contest. To close out the half, Tabor was able to sink three free throws as a result of a Swedes' foul, to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room. Read more here photo by Jim Turner Women's Basketball Defeats Tabor Bluejays this past Wednesday The Bethany women's basketball team picked up a big win on Wednesday, defeating the Tabor Bluejays 57-54 on January 8. After the Bluejays took an early lead in the contest, Tabor would be able to push their lead to as large as five points throughout the first minutes of the game. However, the Swedes were able to rebound late in the first quarter with a small run to cut that lead to just two points by the end of the quarter. The Bluejays were able to stay in control for the first part of the second quarter but with just over half of the quarter to play, the Swedes were able to take their first lead of the contest. Bethany was then able carry that into the break where they led 24-21. More here! Photo by Jim Turner Coming up... I spent these day trips visiting different cities in Spain, such as Girona, where a few episodes of “Game of Thrones” were filmed, the mountains of Tibidabo, the beach town of Sitges, exploring the Salvador Dali Museum, and many more. Baseboard Scoreboard Campaign in Honor of Roger Bishop Announced Bethany Baseball played without a working scoreboard last season at Anderson Field so a campaign is underway to raise funds for a new scoreboard (pictured below right)! A generous donor came forward with a $5,000 lead challenge gift in memory and in honor of legendary and popular Psychology Professor Roger Bishop (pictured below left). This is so appropriate as Roger was a huge baseball fan (Swedes and Cardinals) attending MANY games at Anderson Field and also umpiring MANY, MANY games. The goal is to raise $24,000 to cover the cost of the scoreboard and the installation. Mail checks with Bishop Baseball Scoreboard on the memo line OR go to www.bethanylb.edu and click donate and designate for Bishop Baseball Scoreboard OR call Jane Asche at 785-227-3380 Ext. 8270 Along with your gift, please share your memories of Professor Bishop in his classes, on campus, at sporting events and in the community!
