    BEFORE THE DANCE: “NASCENT” DANCE MOVEMENTS IN NON-DANCE PERFORMANCES: THE CASE OF KOBIGAAN Priyanka Basu PhD Research Scholar Department of the Languages and Cultures of South Asia, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, UK Introduction That’s all there is to it: a speck of behavior, a fleck of culture, and voila! - a gesture. (Geertz, 1973, p. 6) The ways of approaching dance as performance are many and varying. The spectator’s approach towards dance as a mode of behavior within a given culture couples with a study of the gestures within dance as a practice. However, to think of dance as embedded in and an embodiment of our “everyday” gestures allows one to probe a little deeper into the question of movements within dance. Do we, then, view dance as a strict separate practice having little or nothing to do with related gestures in other modes of performance practices? Or, is there a probable way of studying dance- like movements within “non-dance” performances in specific cultures that nourish one’s understanding and way of viewing dance? The second interrogation is pre-emptive of the subject of concern within this paper as also with the thematic-problematic of approaching dance. The dependence on advertising revenues is supposed to ensure financial and therefore political independence. Such market-driven media, however, are inadequate in fulfilling the goal of democracy because they show less interest in reporting the causes of the poor and other disadvantaged groups. An alternative model proposed is that of a partisan media system in a pluralistic market, affording a diversity of political views including those of marginalised groups. Although conceptually different, the partisan and the commercial models of the news media are known to co-exist in many societies.

Rajanikanta Gupta’s ‘Sipahi Juddher Itihas’ and Multiple Faces of Loyalty, Anxiety and Dissatisfaction Ramendrasundar Trivedi (1864 – 1919), one of the great essayists and literary figures in the early decades of the 20 th century Bengal, once mused over his reading experiences in early school days. At the age of eight or nine, as a student of middle Anglo-vernacular school, he came across, in a magazine called ‘Bandhab ’, an article, which stated that quite a few history text books happened to be full of lies and misinformations. A number of books on the histories of Bengal and India, mostly written by eminent English scholars, belonged to this category. He clearly remembered his reaction even after thirty years. “I considered it totally unbelievable that there may be mistakes in the history writings of any English scholar. I was unaware of this side of the human character that great scholars would have written baseless stories, due to their partisanship . Moreover, it appeared to me absolutely ridiculous that the history books which I had to cram in order to avoid the slaps of my teacher contained mistakes” 1. That very article had announced that Rajanikanta Gupta 2 (1849-1900), then an unknown person, had taken up a project to write a comprehensive history of the Sepoy War in India; it would be written in vernacular and it would rectify many misconceptions currently nurtured and propagated by the English historians. Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Yasmin Saikia Daniel Botsman Charles Kurzman ABSTRACT Zaheer Abbas: Construction of Bengali Muslim Identity in Colonial Bengal, c. 1870-1920 (Under the direction of Yasmin Saikia) This thesis explores the various discourses on the formation of Bengali Muslim identity in colonial Bengal until 1920s before it becomes hardened and used in various politically mobilizable forms. For the purpose of this thesis, I engage multiple articulations of the Bengali Muslim identity to show the fluctuating representations of what and who qualifies as Bengali Muslim in the period from 1870 to 1920. I critically engage with new knowledge production that the colonial census undertook, the different forms of non-fictional Bengali literature produced by the vibrant vernacular print industry, and the views of the English-educated Urdu speaking elites of Bengal from which can be read the ensemble of forces acting upon the formation of a Bengali Muslim identity.
