Across the globe the adaptation of Jamaican sound system culture has stimulated an innovative approach to sound technologies deployed to re-configure public spaces as sites for conviviality, celebration, resistance and different ways-of-knowing. In a world of digital social media, the shared, multi-sensory, social and embodied experience of the sound system session becomes ever more important and valuable. Sound System Outernational #5 – “Sounds in the City: Street Technology and Public Space” (4-5-6 April, 2019 - Naples, Italy) is designed as a multi-layered event hosted at Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale with local social movement partners. Over three days and interacting with the city of Naples in its rich academic, social, political and musical dimensions, the event includes talks, roundtables, exhibitions and film screenings. It also features sound system dances hosting local and international performers in some of the city’s most iconic social spaces. The aim of the program is to provide the chance for foreign researchers to experience the local sound system scene in the grassroots venues that constitute this culture’s infrastructure in Naples. This aims to stimulate a fruitful exchange between the academic community and local practitioners, which has always been SSO’s main purpose. Sounds in the City will also provide the occasion for the SSO international research network meeting and the opportunity for a short-term research project on the Napoli sound system scene. Festivals big and small this month – Leo B returned to Boomtown to record their 10th anniversary and interviewed the legendary Susan Cadogan. Meanwhile the Natty HiFi crew returned to the Elder Stubbs Festival, held at Rymers Lane Allotments in Oxford for the tenth year in a row and Dan-I reached Notting Hill Carnival once again. Tune in for reports from the One Love Festival next month. We finally interview one of our own writers this month, giving Steve Mosco his due respect as founder of the Jah Warrior sound and label, as well as the pioneering online reggaemusicstore. I also get to review my teenage heroes Fishbone who came on a brief tour to the UK, now busy supporting the revitalized Toots and the Maytals (who play in Oxford on Saturday 13th October at the O2) and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic on some of their US dates. We have a new column by the founder of The Dub, Natty Mark Samuels, who brings us African Herbsman, which this month gives us advice from the motherland about herbs for the treatment of asthma. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge. -

Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers Dr Niall Thomas University of Winchester Dr Andrew King University of Hull Abstract The study of the recorded artefact from a musicological perspective continues to unfold through contemporary research. Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the artistic nature of this endeavour from a production viewpoint is still developing. This study presents an understanding of the phenomenological aspects of Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within this genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. A framework is then put forward for understanding sonic elements of recorded Heavy Metal Music. Keywords: recording; Heavy Metal; production; producers; phenomenology Introduction The twenty-first century provides a rich source of creative opportunity through digital technology for practicing musicians to record music. The affordances of the digital revolution have subsequently changed the opportunities for those involved in the creation of such works. Technology enables those who could be described as amateur music makers the opportunity to record music with relative ease. The democratisation of technology has meant that mobile devices can become pocket sized recording studios (Leyshon, 2009), whilst affordable solutions and emulations of previously prohibitively expensive computing and recording technology are readily available via the Internet. -

His unique, harmonious reggae beat combined with a glamorous African cadence offers a very distinctive sound to his rhythm. In 2006 he released the Album ‘Legal Stranger’ which contains besides hits like ‘Mama Africa’ and ‘Tell me why’ the song ‘Doubting me’ which was nominated ‘Best reggae song of the year’ at the Ghana national Music Awards. In 2008 his third album “Prophecy” was published which was a compilation of powerful songs such as “No pain no gain”, “Give me back all the natural resources” or the hit tune “Hot and Cold” featuring the British – Ghanaian Rapper Sway. As his reputation further grew across continental Europe, Black Prophet has been constantly invited to play at various shows and festivals, such as the Oland Roots festival (Sweden), Rottodom Sunsplash Festival (Spain), Reggae Geel Festival (Belgium) or the Rastaplas Festival (Netherlands). In 2010 the gifted reggae artist won the Benelux – Final of the European Reggae Contest. During his latest European tour with the Jamaican Artist Turbulence in February 2012 the conscious reggae musician showcased his newest album “Tribulations” which offers a unique fusion of African and Jamaican Reggae elements with traditional African music and hip – hop beats. -

HVW8 BERLIN — HVW8 Gallery Berlin in collaboration with One Love Books presents THREE THE HARD WAY WILFRED LIMONIOUS: IN FINE STYLE ALEX BARTSCH: COVERS MAXINE WALTERS: SERIOUS THINGS A GO HAPPEN Cover illustration from the LP Dance Hall Time by Various Artistes (Scar Face Music, 1986) In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious, is the first solo exhibition of work by prolific Jamaican illustrator Wilfred Limonious (1949–99) in Germany, and includes reproductions of work from the early 1970s through the mid-1990s, spanning three key phases in his career: his comic strips for the Jamaican newspapers, his illustrations for the publications of JAMAL (the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy), and his distinctive artwork for the burgeoning dancehall scene coming out of 1980s Jamaica. The exhibition is curated by Al “Fingers” Newman and Christopher Bateman and is produced by One Love Books with the support of the Limonious Estate, to accompany their book, In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious, the first study into the artist’s life and work. London-based photographer Alex Bartsch makes his debut at HVW8 Gallery Berlin with photographs from his book, Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London, forthcoming on One Love Books. After researching various reggae LPs and twelve-inches from his record collection, Bartsch has re-photographed fifty sleeves in their original London locations, holding them up at arm’s-length so that they blend in with their surroundings, decades later. Presented in this way, the photographs document the transition of time, with the album cover serving as a window into the past, juxtaposed against today’s backdrop.
