Summary: Primarily exhibition catalogs for modernist art exhibitions held in New York City during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Also included are catalogs for Boston exhibitions, mainly pre-1900, and a few other locales; exhibition announcements; gallery publications; and other printed material. Administrative Information Provenance The bulk of the collection was donated 1979 by the American Antiquarian Society, who presumably assembled them from various sources. Others were received individually, while many are annotated in the hand of Walt Kuhn and are presumed to have originally been part of his papers in the Archives. In 2005, additional catalogs were integrated, some of which are presumed to have been removed from various collections over the years. Related Material Researchers may find duplicate or related items in galleries' records held at the Archives of American Art. Additional or duplicate catalogs may appear in AAA's Catalog of Exhibition Catalogs (1979). Alternative Forms Available Portions of this collection are available on 35 mm microfilm reels 4858-4859 at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of the material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm. Processing Information The Archives created this artificial collection of art exhibition catalogs over a number of years, beginning in the late 1970s. A finding aid to the collection was created some time after microfilming and then encoded according to the EAD (Encoded Archival Description) format Page 1 of 69 Miscellaneous art exhibition catalog collection AAA.archamea in 2005 by Christina Lehman. Additional updates to the collection were made in 2011 by Erin Kinhart. Preferred Citation Miscellaneous art exhibition catalog collection, 1813-1953, bulk 1915-1925. Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Restrictions on Access Use of original papers requires an appointment. Terms of Use The Archives of American Art makes its archival collections available for non-commercial, educational and personal use unless restricted by copyright and/or donor restrictions, including but not limited to access and publication restrictions. AAA makes no representations concerning such rights and restrictions and it is the user's responsibility to determine whether rights or restrictions exist and to obtain any necessary permission to access, use, reproduce and publish the collections. Please refer to the Smithsonian's Terms of Use for additional information. Historical Note In 1979, the American Antiquarian Society donated several hundred exhibition catalogs and art-related printed material to the Archives of American Art (AAA). The Society had received most of them over a long period of time, many of them addressed to the director, Charles Brigham. For several years subsequent to the donation, AAA sporadically added exhibition catalogs to the collection from various sources. Some of these additions are annotated in the hand of Walt Kuhn and are presumed to have been part of his papers in the Archives. Scope and Content Note The collection comprises circa 770 items, dating from 1813-1953, the bulk of which are exhibition catalogs from New York City art galleries for the first two decades of the twentieth century, representing exhibitions of mainly modernist art. Catalogs for exhibitions held in Boston (mainly pre-1900) and a few other cities are also present. Included are several rare catalogs, notably one for the "Eight" held at Macbeth Gallery in 1908. Besides catalogs, the collection also contains exhibition announcements, gallery publications, and other printed material. The collection is especially relevant for the study of early American modernism, and is useful in understanding the role of art galleries, exhibitions, the art market, and the exhibition catalog itself, in American art. Arrangement The collection is arranged as 8 series representing alphabetical groups. Catalogs are arranged within these groups according to name of the sponsoring gallery, or if no gallery is listed, by the name of the club or organization. Catalogs are arranged chronologically thereafter, with undated material first. Many Page 2 of 69 Miscellaneous art exhibition catalog collection AAA.archamea catalogs are undated, list only a year, or are annotated with a date. No attempt has been made to date or verify these at this time. Catalogs which are annotated with a date are filed chronologically, and are indicated with brackets around the date. • Series 1: Art Exhibition Catalogs, A-C • Series 2: Art Exhibition Catalogs, D-F • Series 3: Art Exhibition Catalogs, G-I • Series 4: Art Exhibition Catalogs, J-L • Series 5: Art Exhibition Catalogs, M-O • Series 6: Art Exhibition Catalogs, P-R • Series 7: Art Exhibition Catalogs, S-T • Series 8: Art Exhibition Catalogs, U-Z Names and Subject Terms This collection is indexed in the online catalog of the Smithsonian Institution under the following terms: Subjects: Art, American -- Exhibitions Art, Modern -- 19th century -- Massachusetts -- Exhibitions Art, Modern -- 19th century -- New York (State) -- New York -- Exhibitions Art, Modern -- 20th century -- New York (State) -- New York -- Exhibitions Artists -- United States -- Exhibitions Modernism (Art) Types of Materials: Exhibition catalogs Names: Kuhn, Walt, 1877-1949 Functions: Art galleries, Commercial -- Massachusetts Art galleries, Commercial -- New York (State) Page 3 of 69 Series 1: Art Exhibition Catalogs: A-C Miscellaneous art exhibition catalog collection AAA.archamea Container Listing Series 1: Art Exhibition Catalogs: A-C ACA Gallery, 52 West 8th Street, New York City Box 1, Folder 1, Item 1938 Dedicated to the New Deal, circa 1938 1 Box 1, Folder 1, Item Artists in the War, June 14, 1942 2 Box 1, Folder 1, Item Artists' Tribute in Memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1947 3 Ainslie Galleries, 615 Fifth Ave. and 677 Fifth Ave., New York City Box 1, Folder 2, Item Exhibition of Paintings by Emma Fordyce MacRae (Mrs. Homer F. Seitz Museumof MotfwnArt ARCHIVE Claude Monet was the purest and most characteristic master of Impressionism. The fundamental principle of his art was a new, wholly perceptual observation of the most fleeting aspects of nature — of moving clouds and water, sun and shadow, rain and snow, mist and fog, dawn and sunset. Over a period of almost seventy years, from the late 1850s to his death in 1926, Monet must have pro duced close to 3,000 paintings, the vast majority of which were landscapes, seascapes, and river scenes. As his involvement with nature became more com plete, he turned from general representations of season and light to paint more specific, momentary, and transitory effects of weather and atmosphere. Late in the seventies he began to repeat his subjects at different seasons of the year or moments of the day, and in the nineties this became a regular procedure that resulted in his well-known "series " — Haystacks, Poplars, Cathedrals, Views of the Thames, Water ERRATA Lilies, etc.

  • Cecil Beaton (1904–80) Was One of the Great Creative Figures of the British Twentieth Century
Access Guide Please return at the end of your visit We hope this guide supports your visit. Please speak to any member of staff for more information. VERSION 2 Map Entrance Contents TBC Introduction Cecil Beaton (1904–80) was one of the great creative figures of the British twentieth century. Chiefly known as a photographer of portraits and fashion, through his work for Vogue magazine from 1924 to 1979, he was also recognised as a significant war photographer. An illustrator and caricaturist, a writer and commentator on taste and manners, Beaton was a theatre designer and art director of world renown and an influential stylist of his own homes. This exhibition focuses on Beaton’s early years. Born in Hampstead to a then prosperous timber merchant, Ernest Beaton and his wife Esther (‘Etty’), Cecil was first given a camera in 1914, aged ten. His first subjects were his mother and his willing sisters, Nancy and Barbara (‘Baba’). His transformation from middle-class suburban schoolboy to dazzling society figure against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties and the Age of Jazz revealed a social mobility barely thinkable before the First World War. Here, then, are the Bright Young Things who brought an extraordinary era vividly to life and in so doing, nurtured and refined a remarkable photographic talent. The strength of his singular vision is such that, when we think of the Bright Young Things, we think of them in Beaton’s costumes, through Beaton’s lens and as Beaton’s friends. For full details of all events please see the What’s On guide or npg.org.uk/events Friday 20 March, 19.00 Lecture ‘When I die I want to go to Vogue’: Cecil Beaton’s Most Enduring Patron with Robin Muir Curator Robin Muir looks at the Cecil Beaton’s long working relationship with Vogue.

This exhibition delves into the agricultural heritage of Florence Griswold’s family estate, the Lyme region and beyond, to examine the complex history and character of New England’s farms. Paintings, drawings, and photographs by artists from the 1830s to the present day will trace the unique challenges of farming in New England. The Museum’s property is itself a case study of family farms in New England. Purchased by the Griswolds in 1841, these grounds became a country estate with barns, an orchard, gardens, and riverfront pastures where the family practiced small-scale farming during Florence’s childhood.

It also looks at how Cunard’s collecting practices translate into an ‘aesthetic of assemblage’ in her work as an anthologist, and shows how the African sculpture section of her Negro anthology (1934) reflects the collecting cultures of early twentieth-century Europe.

In observance of this, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Carnegie Gallery of the University of Maine at Orono and the Colby College Art Museum are presenting the exhibition. Landscape in Maine, 1820-1970. It was during the first few years of Maine's statehood that American artists turned for the first time to landscape painting. Prior to that time, the primary form of painting in this country had been portraiture. When landscape appeared at all in a painting it was as the background of a portrait, or very occasionally, as the subject of an overmantel painting. Almost simultaneously with the artists' interest in landscape as a suitable sub- ject for a painting, they discovered Maine and its varied landscape. Since then, many of the finest American artists have lived in Maine where they have produced some of their most expressive works.
