  • World Sailing News Q1 2021
News | Q1 | 2021 1 World Sailing News | Q1 | 2021 Presidential Welcome It is an honour to introduce you to the first edition of World Sailing News. Upon my election last November, I outlined my intention for World Sailing to communicate better with its Member National Authorities, Regional Associations, Class Associations, Committee members, and the hard-working volunteers that make our sport work, from the grassroots to the peak of performance. I hope that the introduction of these quarterly newsletters will help to achieve that. Open communication within our sport has always been important, but given the current climate, it is more crucial now than it has ever been. It is important that World Sailing takes the lead by sharing best practice, forming new ideas and creating inspiring content that touches all aspects of our sport. It is also vital that this material is well distributed across our community. It is a pity that we have not been able to meet face to face for so long, but I have enjoyed meeting and engaging with you directly and via our Regional Meetings. It is important that our dialogue works two ways so we can work together to grow the beautiful sport we all love. Quanhai Li President 2 World Sailing News | Q1 | 2021 CEO Welcome On one hand, it has been a At the 2020 Council Meeting, I made a pledge to improve very pleasant quarter for the our communication and engagement with our members, World Sailing community as and this new quarterly World Sailing News is part of that numerous sailing events have pledge.

  • Published Date: 17/12/2011 It Might Seem a Strange Partnership
Published Date: 17/12/2011 It might seem a strange partnership, toothbrushes and the Olympic 470 dinghy, but the humble toothbrush plays an important role in the boat’s spinnaker set up and handling. We decided to find out more as to why some teams are ardent supporters of the toothbrush, whilst other teams are 100% against the approach, preferring to use the more refined sail batten to achieve the same outcome. 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Isabel Swan (BRA) was the Top 470 Toothbrushes © 470 Class perfect place to start our research. With helm Martin Grael, they are ranked #11 in the world and are on a campaign to be selected to represent Brazil at the 2012 Olympic Games. Isabel firstly explained the role the toothbrush has on the boat, “It is good to use a toothbrush, because you use the bristles of the toothbrush to stop the spinnaker halyard to go up, as we have a shockcord that makes the spinnaker tight, which is why we choose a toothbrush." The Brazilian team has shockcord tied around either end of the Elise Rechici/Belinda Stowell (AUS) toothbrush, whilst other teams have holes drilled through their toothbrushes, and Isabel explained the difference. “The tied approach works for us. When sailing, you just have to very quickly find where the toothbrush is, so you can get the spinnaker halyard. It is better than using a batten I think, even though this is a different way than people normally use toothbrushes.” Helm Martine chipped in “You really have to be careful with the toothbrush you buy as it can break.
