An SCO Diary

By Dan McGinty

THE Philippines is known worldwide for its intense and often violent Holy Week traditions, with crucifixions sometimes re-enacted by devout Catholics in certain parts of the country, so it comes as no surprise, then, that the government in the country opted to postpone the celebration of Earth Day. The celebration, which fell on Good Friday this year, is marked all around the world by education and protest events on environmental issues, and while most of the 72 million Catholics in the country were happy to put Earth Day to one side in favour of their Good Friday traditions, the volunteers for crucifixion, in which real nails are To have known him is to have loved him used to fix people to the cross, could have been CARDINAL KEITH O’BRIEN forgiven for looking back In a special article ahead of the late Pope John Paul II’s Beatification on their ordeal and wishing they’d spent the shares some of his own memories of the Holy Father and explores the legacy he has left us day reading about the shrinking rainforests.
